New Map Reward System?
It is part of the beta weekend; I don’t know if live characters can test it, but beta characters certainly can.
And it is a new system arriving with Heart of Thorns to provide incentive for returning to older maps.

Not just that but to help with farming mats for Legendaries.

I didn’t have a lot of time, but I peeked at Cursed Shore with a beta character, where the rewards were Ancient Bone/Charged Core/Charged Lodestone/Giant Eye. Completing events made some extra sparkles go towards the top-left of the screen rather than just to my XP bar, and after the second event I finished there, an Ancient Bone was added to my inventory. The map still said that my next reward would be ‘Ancient Bone’ though, so you might need to complete several events to get to the next tier of reward?
It was first announced in the News Blog, ‘A Legendary Journey’ some months ago. It is only active for beta characters at this time.

I went to Brisbane and did 8-10 events or so. It seems it’s every other event that you get the map reward and just a chance that it gives you one of the “additional rewards” listed. Most of the time I got the standard small scale, but once I got a molten sliver. I don’t know what the chances for getting the additional items listed is as what I did was a very tiny sample. But it was every other event that I got something extra. Might be every other event in the higher tier maps too, but I didn’t try that.
The UI when you hover over the map shows “next reward” and “other rewards.” Is the “next” supposed to mean “current”? If so, that’s confusing wording. Or are current rewards shown elsewhere? I can’t find it. Or do you just have to do events and see what you get?
EDIT: oops i see the post above me kinda explains it. So then yes, I think that the wording on the UI should be clarified.
I did a few events in Cursed Shore on my Rev and got an Ancient Bone. It’s not very clear though.
1) getting the ancient bone, I didn’t know if it was a from that reward or a random drop. That could be noted on the UI somehow so people will know they actually got a map reward. Otherwise people won’t know.
2) after I got it, it still said “next reward” was an ancient bone. It was unclear if at some point it advances to the next option or if it doesn’t and the rest remain a rare but possible reward. Or if the next one in line was more likely to drop than the ones after it.
It wouldn’t hurt to make them distinctive in some way to show they are map rewards. I don’t think putting them in a chest is a good idea though. No one wants to do the low level maps and get a chest with a few copper mat inside. If it shows up on the side of the UI as a drop, maybe it could be in a distinctly colored square so people know that particular one is a map reward and not just a random drop.
ANet may give it to you.

I did my testing in Fields of Ruin, I believe. I got the first reward (some Bauble trophy) twice before I was rewarded with the next available item.
I agree that it would be helpful if there was some kind of indication that the item was a Map Reward. I was only sure, because the Bauble was not an item I’ve ever had drop before.
Tried this at Cursed Shore. Due to those.. noticeability issues can’t say anything with confidence, but i believe it takes 2 events to get reward there. There was rewards rotation and it was ancient bone > ancient bone > charged core > ancient bone (after that i finished my testing).
All in all, rewards are rather limp, system itself is nice, but calls for some clarification.

I hope you didn’t expect something special for doing map events, because that would indeed be a first for GW2…. If you look at the ‘rewards’ for some collections, it’s rather bland and uninspiring. I wouldn’t expect anything more or better from map events at this point.

I didn’t expect anything, really. I’m just anxious to see how these rewards and new way to earn a prec would reflect on market in general and on lodestones prices in particular. To sell or not to sell, so to speak. Maybe there’s already a thread to discuss this?
