Wait, where are the discussions about this topic? The description for the steel series keyboard does state that it supports the use of macros on its feature list. I’m confused about the draw for buying it if that’s not what it does, since lots of other keyboards have back lighting. I’ve done several searches, so if I’ve missed anything, just point me to it.

I’m pretty sure you can play other games and use other programs with that keyboard.

Let’s not pretend to imagine that every bit of functionality on every device is appropriate for every situation.

Okay, so I guess what I’m wondering is what functionality does this gaming keyboard, designed specifically for gw2, offer that my $10 keyboard doesn’t? If I’m buying a gw2 gaming keyboard from Steel Series then shouldn’t there be specific features geared toward gw2?

That’s the issue I’m having. How is that unreasonable? I feel like your tone was unwarranted.

The SteelSeries keyboard is overpriced junk anyway. If I wanted a cheaply made rubber dome keyboard, I could pick one up for 10 bucks at Wal-Mart.

What…

I dont even…

Apex? Anti ghosting? Isnt that… membrane? But that’s like… like…

Rubber dome switches?!?!?! Seriously?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!

That is not a gaming keyboard. That… thing… is an abomination that should be brought out in the backyard and beaten to death with a Steelseries 7G.

This keyboard wasn’t designed specifically for GW2. It’s the SteelSeries base model with a coat of GW2 paint.

The main feature of the keyboard is the look and branding. Some people like to buy branded accessories to remind them of their favorite games or licenses.

Outside of that, most gaming keyboards, in addition to offering macros (against TOS), will also let you program specific keys into their macro keys which can be done within guidelines.

One very useful example is to program several keys to be “left click” and then roll multiple fingers over those keys to rapidly click your mouse. You’re still in “one button, one function” territory, but you’re using multiple fingers to, say, open your karma or drink your liquor.

Also, I did have a judge sign off on a warrant for my tone. Promise

I really needed a Macro for 1,.. 1,… 1,… 1,…

Now I can use both of my hands to eat a sandwich while becoming a legend.

Just asking, but what type of macro might people find useful, assuming it didn’t violate the TOS? I ask because I’m thinking of a macro in this situation as an automated key sequence, but I can’t think of a situation where I’d want to use that. (I’m probably overlooking the obvious though.)

MACRO: a single instruction that expands automatically into a set of instructions to perform a particular task.

replacing one key for another is not a macro but a set up on the keybinds. Having a Macro Keyboard in a game that doesn’t allow MACROS is quite contradictory and will probably cause more than one unfair ban (if detected of course).

Most of you didn’t actually read the entire keyboard description..

The ‘macro’ keys located behind the F-key row are raised so that you can basically slide your finder down from one of those keys while pressing it and land on the F-Key underneath.

This fits exactly with what Anet considers acceptable. It makes it easier to press two buttons with one physical action, but you are still pressing two buttons.

As for the keyboard itself, I agree with the above poster that this is NOT a gaming keyboard. There are much better choices out there.

It might be to the Steelseries marketing team.

Well, they might not be as big as they think to re-define the word Macro :P

And so does Autohotkey with any keyboard – you can program your keys to do basicly anything. No need for a pseudo “gaming” keyboard using rub… rubb… mem… Ah kitten I cant even bring myself to say it again. You know, the kittening obsolete switches in this kittener of a keyboard.

I have a Logitech G110 keyboard which has the macro keys down the left side.

Mine are programed to do the following:
1 keys my mic for TS
4 are used to switch Attunements (I’m an ele, I have my F1-F4 Attunements actually keybound to my number pad, and then those number pad keys bound to four of the macro keys)
1 activates my healing skill
1 is for AoE loot
1 is for “drop bundle”

Why are mine bound this way? Because of limitations with my hands, I try to limit how much I have to move my fingers while playing. I move my toon with my mouse (trackball), and dodge/jump with my back/forward buttons on my mouse. I use the F- keys for my weapon skills, utility skills & elite skills. It’s easier for my fingers to navigate those without accidentally also pressing something else. And I can change my attunements (or heal, or activate my mic, drop a STUPID BANNER, AoE loot, etc.) just by moving my pinky.

All of this is permissible under the TOS/EULA – one key, one action rule. And all of this makes a macro-enabled keyboard worth having (for me), and still legal in the ANet universe.
