Just wanted to say hello as I’m new to GuildWars2 and GuildWars as a whole, I’m Heriophant (Not my real name lul) and I love playing games, have done for nearly 20 years anyways!

With all new games I buy, My first stop is the forums while I download the game.

And Boy ‘o Boy, I have honestly never seen so much Q.Q going into one forum as I did this one, I’m unsure at the moment now if brought the right game for me, and I hope the game-play is better than the forum community/trolls, Or I may have just wasted a ton of time and money.

I want someone to give their view on the game, in its current state, I will give a cookie (If I cooking is a skill and/or I find a vendor that sells them), To the person I feel is most truthful about their experience.

-Edit-
HAHA, Well any tips on race/class I would be best of trying first, I’m not talking end game overpowered ness, but more something new player friendly? I normally drift towards healing end game.
I kinda like the sound of “hunter” and the engineer class but I’m unsure about the different races etc.

Hi

And yes .. the game is much better than what you could think if your read the forums.

Most players that are happy just play the game and don’t go into the forums.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

The gameplay is nice but you’ll get bored of it after a while.

The community is toxic because the developers don’t update the game, and they only release “feature packs” which not only do not solve the many bugs (some are even 2 year old) but also don’t add important features.

This game has nowhere near the content other games have received in a 2 year timespan. So enjoy it while you can, but as soon as you reach the endgame, there won’t be much to do.

Best regards!

Welcome to the game! GW2 is a great game to play IMO. It has its pitfalls and bugs like any game, but it is the best MMO I’ve played.

The forums on the other hand… LOL. You are right about it. My experience with forums is that they are mostly full of such people. There are some really great people playing the game who love it for what it is and don’t complain about it for what it isn’t. Most of them don’t frequent the forums I believe.

So I hope you enjoy GW2 as much as I have. I don’t think you have wasted your money at all.

Most people are raging about how Anet is changing things with the newest patch.
Unfortunately, many of these changes are for new characters, so you’re going to be experiencing this awful new system without knowing how it used to be so you’re not going to realize anything is wrong.

The game is really nice and worth the price. Us trolls just don’t like the nothingness coming from the dev team since release, but before that date they made a great enjoying and enjoyed work. And I think being happy or unhappy has nothing to do with coming to the forums, it is just a person’s habit.

Most people are still here/ playing, so it can’t be that bad…

However, communicating on the forums about issues that bother us is very important (even if it seems very Q.Q). Nothing will change/ improve if we do not let them know about it.

Have fun and play the way you want to!
There are a lot of nice things awaiting you.

If you then find things which you don’t feel good about, you might want to share them with us on these forums and will do some Q.Q as well. ;-) Just kidding..

Welcome to the game.
Going into the forums first I always think is a bad idea because immediately your perception is skewed.
Ignore all the crying here. Unfortunately a lot of people these days seem to use games as a prop for there real-life ego and use the game to replace real life, which leads to raging when it doesn’t satisfy them (it cannot, it is a game).
Just go and have some fun; that is what games are for :-)

The only way for you to judge the game is for you to experience it for yourself. Nothing you hear on the forums, good or bad, should influence your judgment. Everyone has their own experiences, their own wish-list, their own disappointments, or lack thereof.

I enjoy the game for what it is. I participate in the parts I enjoy, and leave the other parts to those that enjoy them. As with most things in life, it is what you make of it.

My advice, as far as gameplay goes, is to take your time, and don’t rush to Level 80. Stop and smell the roses, you only go through the game for the first time, once. The Wiki is a great resource, you can access it in-game with the /wiki (subject of interest here) command in chat.

Welcome to Tyria, good luck, and happy adventuring! =)

Edit for your edit: I recommend Ranger to start. It’s very forgiving and quite viable in most Open World content. But, you have 5 character slots, so you can try different race/profession combinations. Oh, and if you like jumping puzzles, I might suggest any race but Norn or Charr. They can be problematic. Rangers also have access to a speed utility, so there’s that. =)

We don’t really have tanks in GW2 .. so you can play any class more tanky or more as a damage-dealer. Its in the end just a matter of traits and what stats you have on your armor.

I recommended Guardian because they are button-smashing easy to play. If you want something squishier try Elementalist. They can do lots of damage, defense, and healing depending on your attunement.

Hey there and welcome to the game. This community is deeply polarized. That means some people love this game and some people….don’t love this game. lol

I’ve been playing every single day the game has been available since the first beta, and I love it. My wife plays and she loves it. I have a guild of about 150 people, and probably 50 of them are extremely active.

It has strengths and weaknesses like any game. For me, the strengths of this game fit my particular play style and the weaknesses barely affect me. So I’m happy with the game.

You should get hundreds of not thousands of hours out of it no matter what people write on the forums. Many people who are unhappy are unhappy because they followed the game from inception and changes have been made. They don’t like those changes. I don’t like all the changes, but I love some of them.

It’s all about expectation. If you hit me up in game, I can show you a few things. Just add me to your friends list and message me.

Oh don’t take the forums too seriously. People tend to overdramaticize everything here and generally when people are happy about something they won’t come to the forums to post it.

My advice to you is that don’t take a class just because it’s newbie friendly. You’ll only be a newbie for a short while, so being stuck with a class you don’t like just because it’s newbie friendly won’t do you good in my opinion. People will probably suggest a warrior or something and let me tell you if I started out playing a warrior I’d have quit this game long ago (I really don’t like warriors XD).

You said you like healers, while this game doesn’t have any healers the guardian provides very good support (NOT in the forum of tanking as there are no tanks – there isn’t even any way to hold aggro, but in the form of providing team buffs and having heals and skills that protect allies), and both engineer (stealth, heals, damage increasing buffs) and elementalist (damage increasing buffs, heals, swiftness) also good have good support capabilities.

Guardian is more easy to get used to and more fool friendly, while elementalist and engineer are considered one of the most complex classes because they have access to more skills than the rest. But honestly you’ll get used to elementalist and engineer soon enough (I can know it, I started with an elementalist and I came out fine).

For race, just pick the one you like best. There is no best race or any advantage over picking a certain race (but obviously asuras are the cutest so pick that one : D ).

I kinda like the sound of “hunter” and the engineer class but I’m unsure about the different races etc.

Couple of things -

1) there are no dedicated Healers/Tanks in this game. Every class can do things beneficial to the group although some excel at certain things (Thief and group stealth for example). Saying that I main a Ranger and it has, in my opinion, one of the best group heals and cleanses in the game.
2) Race is mainly aesthetic and doesn’t really affect your class choice. Some of the racial abilities can work quite well with certain classes (the Asuran skill Technobabble with a Mesmer works quite well) but otherwise it’s largely what you want to play.

Humans and norns have the best looking female clothing/hair/faces etc. Charr are giant cats, Asura are small and quite alien looking and Sylvari are a race of plants. Norn are quite a bit larger than humans and harder to do jumping puzzles with. As boring as it sounds, you might want to start with a human.

As for profession, my favorite professions are ranger, necro and mesmer, followed by guardian. They’re all good for different play styles.

A lot depends on what areas of the game you plan on playing most.

Stay out of the forums and you will enjoy the game more. As you can see, just by looking at some posts in this thread, it’s just filled with bitter people who have played it for a year or longer, and now are bored.

The current state of the game is as follows:
-Starting today’s patch, you will have a much smoother experience while leveling up.
-We don’t know much about long term plans of ArenaNet for the game, as like they said, they prefer to reveal stuff when they’re about to ship it.
-Starting 12th of September, there will be a World vs World tournament which everyone can participate, and reap quite cool rewards.
-After the Tournament is over (October), the Living Story will resume. Those are bi-weekly patches that introduce new story quests, and achievements. To be frank, some of them are very lackluster if you aren’t really a fan of GW2’s characters, and you prefer gameplay over storytelling.
-At level 80, the exotic gear is all you really need to compete, and participate in all the game’s content while still being very efficient. Decking yourself in exotic usually takes around a week for a totally new player.
-If you feel like you want to have a slight edge, though, you have an option to craft Ascended Armor/Weapons, for a slight stat increase. The process is time and money consuming, so it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth it.

As for the races/classes:
-Race doesn’t play a big role in GW2’s gameplay. Just pick what you like.
-There are no dedicated healers in GW2. But if you generally like helping your team, and throwing some quick heals here and there, i’d suggest either a Guardian or Elementalist.

Personal tip:
-Don’t rush, and don’t let the forum cynics make you feel like you just wasted your money. You did not.

Welcome to the game!
If you wish to play a more supportive/healing class, guardian or elementalist is a good choice, although I would recommend that you try both and see what fits your playstyle more. Guardian is probably the easiest class to play, very noob friendly, so you can always try it out if ele gives you trouble.

Also, don’t pay attention to all this QQ, trolls and volatile voices are always the loudest. The game has really nice, helpful community, and there’s always someone who’s willing to help you out. QQ wise, yes you might find something that you don’t like, the same way that you will probably fall in love with some of the features that people are crying about. I think that’s normal for every game :P Trolls and QQers tend to lurk at the forums, but you will probably have a completely different experience in game.

I strongly disagree with people who say that you will get bored of the play style (class wise, race wise, mechanics…), I’ve been playing this game since 3 days head start and It’s still as much fun as it was 2 years ago its all subjective, so try everything out and have fun doing it!

There is RP. Are you NA or EU based? If you’re NA you’ll want the Tarnished Coast server (think it may be full though) if you’re on EU you’ll want Piken Square. Beware though whilst the megaserver system tries to prioritise Server/Guild mates it doesn’t always end up that way (but it is getting better)

There are multiple servers but it doesn’t matter which one you’re on (unless you want to do WvW) since there are megaservers, which basically merges all the people into one map, when that one becomes full, another one is created and so on.

Tarnished Coast is unofficial RP server, (NA, I’m not sure about EU servers) although it’s a little harder to find Tarnished Coast people in the megaserver. I’d suggest that you join an RP guild, there are a few big ones, one that I can think of right now is RPCD -Chains of Duty Roleplay Guild. Might be a good place to meet some people there

Edit: just saw that you are on EU, ignore my comment, I’m sure someone can give you better info about EU scene :P

Welcome Heriophant!

I don’t care what anyone says, this game is my favorite. I have played many different titles over the years, and this one consistently is the one I log into EVERY day. I am a norn engineer on my main character, and I am on tarnished coast server, which is the unofficial RP server.

Since mega servers were introduced however, I have not seen as many RPers unless I go into town (pick a town).

It has been a while since I have RP’ed as I spend most of my time livestreaming the dailies around 8 eastern time each night. I do not often get the chance to just sit and talk with people IN the game. I will say this though. I have never been bored, or run out of things to do.

I think you came in at the right time. The NEW new player experience promises to be interesting. I plan on making a new character to check it out myself today.

There is still a lot of work to do in the world of Tyria, and you just stepped in the midsts of a pretty exciting time storywise. Enjoy your personal story, level up at your own pace… play the game how YOU want to. Do all those, and I am pretty sure 2 years later you will be like me today saying “Dang I love this game just as much as the day I bought it”.
