You’re welcome for your free stream plug and I not heard about this new player experience, sounds cool. I’m cursing my poor download speed, meant to be getting a upgrade today, 16mb/s download to a 1Gb/s line, but the service guy/gal not turned up yet.

I want to play!

Lol If there is a bright side, the patch will not be ready till later today anyway, so there is really no rush to download right now. I’d say we have about 4-5 hours or so, before the latest update hits.

Honesty: First and foremost, I am not one of the happier players of the game. i want to tell you that up front so you understand anything the light in which i might say anything here.

That being said, you are new here and have your own adventures in front of you and your own opinions to make regarding the game. Tyria is a huge place with A LOT of places to explore, and if you like a well rounded gaming experience you will have A LOT to do. I’m not kidding. There is always something going on in PvE, PvP, or WvW and the community is one of the best for any MMO I’ve ever played. The fun thing is that any class can be a healer, a DPS, a tank, or anything else in between. As you go into other aspects of the game that require more team play like dungeons and fractals you might need to look into the meta if you want to get all serious biz about them, but if you want to play them casually you can do that as well with the right people.

Many might bag on the story, but i find it to be both engaging and fun to play through and map opening can be a blast your first or even second time through though I will say put some time between your first and second map opening or it might get dull for you.

For starting classes I would say guardian or necro to be honest. Warriors are “easy mode” and can be fun, but i don’t think they are as engaging. (Granted Guardians can also be “easy mode” once you know them well enough.) Engies are super fun, but they are also one of the harder classes to get down, but once you do they are absolute beasts. There are pluses and minuses to all classes in the game mind you, but I’d suggest making one of each class eventually just so you know their strengths and weaknesses.

Most importantly, take your time to get to know your skills early on and realize that if you are already in the game right now some major changes will be hitting today that you might experience/feel if your toon(s) are lower than level 15. Also, ask people on the maps you’re on for help if you get stuck. Plenty of us like to help new players find their way. Don’t stress about endgame nonsense. There has been a ton of new content added lately for level 80s that I hope you’ll be able to get access to once you get to level 80.

Also, if you need or want help with getting traits in Tyria, don’t hesitate to ask people on map. If you want to, you can even add me and if i’m on and in PvE I’d be more than happy to help. Unfortunately I can’t help you in WvW unless you were on Sorrow’s Furnace. All in all i will say that you made a good purchase regardless of my current misgivings with things in game. I just hope you can look past it and enjoy your time here while some of us try to be the sand in Anet’s britches.

Always Norn, all the time.

My first character was a Norn Guardian, still my favourite, though my recent Norn Ranger is giving him a run for his money.

Hey I’m pretty new myself, and I’m quite enjoying the game (though the leveling process is pretty boring, much like other games) but I’m very dubious about the update coming today that severely restricts people’s access to skills based on their level (which sucks kitten , as I was looking forward to this update until I learned about that). Overall, I am having fun, but GW2 is definitely a game that requires you to socialise and join a guild to get the most out of it (though you seemingly can do all the “story” aspects of it solo). So far, I’m not regretting my investment in to the game or in to gems, but that may change with today’s update, time will tell

Good to know about aesthetic’s for races, I tend to go with pretty girls as my first char (Butts – Because noone likes looking at a male kitten all-day lol)

In that case go Norn or Human

Are you suggesting female Sylvari can’t be pretty? :-(

I don’t really like there faces .. the best looking ones always look as if they are stoned

I’ll have you know my sylvari are quite pretty.

The gameplay is nice but you’ll get bored of it after a while.

The community is toxic because the developers don’t update the game, and they only release “feature packs” which not only do not solve the many bugs (some are even 2 year old) but also don’t add important features.

This game has nowhere near the content other games have received in a 2 year timespan. So enjoy it while you can, but as soon as you reach the endgame, there won’t be much to do.

Best regards!

This. Don’t listen to the White Knights or the haters on the opposite. This is your “middle”/“neutral” opinion about the state of the game.

Three 80-lvl Rangers. Why? ‘Cos they’re that cool.

Welcome.

and, yes, the attitudes in game are much different than the forums, which are mostly whine-fests.

This game is what you make of it. Come in with a good attitude (which you seem to be doing), and you will have a blast for a long time to come.

Again, welcome.

Hi. Welcome to the game. You first 100-300 hours are garanteed to be quite fun (if you can put up with the grind they put on leveling a char now, it’s much harder – less fun imo – to level a char. Still this game is very fun. They just don’t add the right ‘new’ content to expand the game, nor is their direction very good (no expansions but living story, their balance team makes mistakes, ruining some nice profession build setups, they nerf a lot of ways to farm gold (a little to much imo), etc. It’s not the end of the world bad, but it’s justified enough to make complaints on the forum about it.

The reason you see so much complaints is because gw2 is a great game, but many feel they want it slightly different (or just bigger) at the moment. If we didn’t care about the game we wouldn’t even post.

The QQ posts want to do two things: Preserve the great base gw2 has (it is a great game), and push it in the right direction (right features, and content). If the game wasn’t that great, people would care less, QQ less and just leave the game more. Pretty simple. Gw2 is so good, that is has the effect on people to post complaints on forums, rather then leave at first sight. They still hope for the good game to be restored/improved.

Legendary weapons can be hidden now!
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.

Just wanted to say hello as I’m new to GuildWars2 and GuildWars as a whole, I’m Heriophant (Not my real name lul) and I love playing games, have done for nearly 20 years anyways!

With all new games I buy, My first stop is the forums while I download the game.

And Boy ‘o Boy, I have honestly never seen so much Q.Q going into one forum as I did this one, I’m unsure at the moment now if brought the right game for me, and I hope the game-play is better than the forum community/trolls, Or I may have just wasted a ton of time and money.

I want someone to give their view on the game, in its current state, I will give a cookie (If I cooking is a skill and/or I find a vendor that sells them), To the person I feel is most truthful about their experience.

-Edit-
HAHA, Well any tips on race/class I would be best of trying first, I’m not talking end game overpowered ness, but more something new player friendly? I normally drift towards healing end game.
I kinda like the sound of “hunter” and the engineer class but I’m unsure about the different races etc.

Don’t judge the game by the forums.

the forums are full of disgruntled people that have nothing better to do than whine about how “the game isn’t getting content” and “omfg unbalanced please nerf” and “where the kitten are mounts”, mixed in with valid complaints about the state of the game and reasonable requests for solutions to those complaints.

The in game community is much nicer because they’re actually having fun.

My experience in game for the past…half a year, has been the following (consolidated):

witnessed a hub world get destroyed and besieged for upwards of a month
before that, huge world bosses dropped and freaked out the map
after the siege, giant server vs server tournament
after that, festival for a month
after that, the festival got blown up too
Currently hanging out in the desert
world completion still not done
wish there were a few more dungeons
Another tournament for World vs. World this week

Coming from someone who plays this on his downtime, I’m still incredibly happy with the game. My advice is don’t blow through it at the speed of light and then join the crowd of people who are tapping their feet at the edge of the story, waiting for new content that they honestly don’t want to play. Stop and smell the roses along the way. Do jumping puzzles. Farm and buy an instrument. Help some newbies. get immersed.
It’ll keep your plate full.

All in all, welcome to the game. We’re nice in game, honestly. Add me, send me a mail if you need help/ a party.

you are certainly going to get your money’s worth of entertainment. If you want -more- than that, make sure you take your time.

Another little thing I would like to add Heriophant.

I have been playing this game for over 2 years now, and I STILL run into little things I have never noticed before. Whether it be a funny conversation by a couple of npcs, or a little corner of the world I passed by so many times but never knew was there. Recently I noticed this lady in the graveyard in Shaemoor… had NO IDEA she even had a mini event associated with her! I have been in that graveyard tons of times.

This game was made for exploration. I hope that is your cup of tea, because you will have found the right game for that.

the enjoyment is in the details. the devs put a lot of forethought into hiding little chuckles, drama, and the like in the AI around the world. seek it out.

If anyone hasn’t said this yet:

The game is made for you to explore the world, not complete quests or grind xp.
Just run around and explore, help out in events you come across, and you will get xp. If you’re feeling grindy, you can do the hearts that are spread across the map.

Just wanna say that if you’re playing today, be prepared that it will be a lot more different when the patch falls tonight. So my tip here is, don’t get used to your character just yet and enjoy the world you’re exploring at the moment ;3

A slow download speed might well turn out to be beneficial. There is a feature pack due today and it’s going to make a lot of changes to the levelling process for new players.

Whether these changes turn out to be better or worse for your play style is largely irrelevant, as you’ll be levelling up with them regardless.

Therefore it’ll probably be less confusing if you don’t experience a couple of levels of the old system, only to log out to download a new patch that changes everything for you.

Well if you bought the game for dungeons they aren’t planning on making new ones that’s what most of the QQing is about really, hardcores trying to get them to listen to the 1% again, it’s just not a good business plan as they’ve discovered over the past 2 years.

Now their focus will be on updates, balance, and content for the open worlders which is what the game was originally supposed to be about. Dunno if that helps you or not.

The game is fun, leveling and crafting on an even keel system is very nice compared to other titles. There is lots to do and more coming in today’s patch. Alot of the activities are behind the guild wall, so join a good one and make friends.

As far as class race is concerned if you like jump puzzles do not make a norn or charr for that purpose the camera thing is terrible. If you like pets make a ranger, if you like sucking the life from your enemies make a Necro and if you like lots of gadgets and WWI style weapons make an Engineer. You’ll see some more discussion on what to fix next in the forums and people are passionate here so don’t worry it’s been going on for 2 years now its probably not going to stop soon.

Almost forgot, get gathering tools, this game is designed to combine questing, gathering, events, resurrecting and crafting to help you level. If you leave any of these out you’re missing out on XP.
