Newb leveling
The game is more enjoyable and leveling goes quicker when you have other players to interact with. I don’t know what server you’re playing on but I’d assume you’re not running into many players as you travel Ascalon.
Try moving over to Queensdale and guesting to Jade Quarry, you’d find far more players to interact with and this will speed up your leveling process.

This isn’t marathon leveling like other mmos, it’s a bit more organic. These people bragging about their multiple level 80 alts have played thousands of hours.
If you 100% your starting area, participate in live events regularly and keep up with crafting you should level at an appropriate rate.
A little warning, do not do diessa plateau, theres an event bug that prevents you from 100%ing the area and has been around for months.
Do brisban wilds instead.
It’s not widely discussed, but you should really do level apropriate areas like brisban wilds if you’re level 18. While you do get scaled down for the area you’re in, the amount of experience you’ll get is considerably more.
not to be dumb but where is brisban wilds?
brisban wilds is north of the asura starting area Metrica Province
I have 3 lvl 80’s and a lvl72, 60, & 30. The last two alts feel like they are taking forever to level.
While I was on my main I hated leveling as fast as I did. I wanted it to slow down. Part of the speed was from crafting & map completion.
But that lvl60 has jewel & chef maxed. It is still a very slow process. I have found when I am out there alone it takes a lot longer to get exp. The other characters were always surrounded by other people. The more empty the maps, the slower it goes.
EDIT: Map completion does help. I would suggest visiting all three starter zones, and completing them. Queensdale seems to be a very popular starting zone. If you know how to get to Lion’s Arch you can go to all of them at any time.

There is really no rush to be max level. You should just enjoy your time exploring appropriate or lower levels. Completely exploring all the cities will give you several levels. Exploring the other starting zones will enable you to become more acquainted with your profession, and might prevent some feelings of frustration in the higher levels. Many people believe leveling up is the best part of the game. Just try to do whatever it is you find enjoyable. The game isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. Best of luck to you, and I hope you find many hours of enjoyment in Tyria. =)
