Maybe you should explain how time-gating a new tier of weapons and gear would make them “so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it.” I was pretty sure he was talking about legendary weapons when he wrote all that. Ascended gear will probably still be a lot easier to acquire than legendaries.
Personally, one thing I have recently noticed — Arenanet likes to be infront of the camera, tell everyone how flippin’ awsome things are going in game and make “grey” statements that can be percieved in many different ways. They see which way the wind is blowing with regard to our responses of their statements and they then shift their model. With every interview, press release and gaming con I see them saying “Yeah, we dont have any grind!” , “Yeah Living Story makes the world feel alive. Our players have a permanent change in the world as a result!” Largely laughable.
They really like to talk it up in front of the press. And I find it sad that they might truely believe this stuff too.
With all of the false promises and grey lines that they have walked with regard to a lot of what they have released into the game, I am finding it hard to support them in any way. Even with regard to parts of the game I enjoyed.
Discuss and tell me how time-gating a new tier of weapons and gear that has better stats obeys what Mike O’Brien said in his quote.

And now that tequatl has had a much needed revamp, finishing an event such as Teq will be very difficult. Even to muster 80 people, which is what is the average number of people needed. So to get ascended weapons and mats from events such as this will be a bit time consuming.
Unlike a lot of people, I don’t find this malicious. I believe that they already planned it anyways, and that instead the flaw here isn’t incompetence or a desire to lie, but sheer stubbornness even when something may conflict with reality (how the game is played).
Now, truth be told, I have a degree of respect for A-net to not capitulate to every demand people give, because frankly most people are just seeking to contort the game to their own needs and make terrible demands, but it does seem like little can change their minds once it’s set.

I have no doubt that it’s going to take a while to craft an Ascended weapon. Even if difficult events was your only source of tier 7 materials, which I doubt, you would still be able to get an Ascended weapon more easily than a legendary. So basically it doesn’t explain how Ascended items are so rare and unrealistic to obtain. It may take some people longer than others no doubt.
If anything, you should use this quote instead.

It depends on how you interpret the quote. You can’t realistically create content that caters to everyone because different people have different preferences. They’ll create one set of content that caters to a specific group of players, another set for another group, and so on. You don’t like jumping puzzles? There are dungeons, dynamic events, PvP, and WvW. You don’t like dynamic events? There’s world exploration, and crafting. Making a lot of things that cater to different people is what they’ve been doing.

It depends on how you interpret the quote. You can’t realistically create content that caters to everyone because different people have different preferences. They’ll create one set of content that caters to a specific group of players, another set for another group, and so on. You don’t like jumping puzzles? Still, on the Ascended side of things, that quote is wrong. Because they have time-gated and content-gated Ascended items behind certain things. So if I wanted to get Ascended items, I have to do different content that I don’t like because it is gated behind only one feature. Which is the opposite of what that quote is talking about.
Ascended gear was designed for Fractals. A specific group of people do Fractals, and want Ascended gear. That content was designed for them only. Not the whole community. But, that content also pulled away from that design decision. Instead, they started gating Ascended gear behind things that were not Fractals. Making those who wanted Fractals, have to go do other content that was not designed with them in mind, just to gear up for content that was designed with them in mind.
This is not making content for the whole community. This is catering to specific groups, and then making those groups have to do different content that they don’t want, just to be able to do content that they do want. Which goes against that quote.

I have no doubt that it’s going to take a while to craft an Ascended weapon. However, a lot of people play only an hour or two a night.maybe 3. These people will have a difficult time accumulating the necessary requirements for ascended gear.
So with all the complaining about how ascended gear is time consuming to get for the upcomming weapons crafting of it, I take it people think they should just get the new stuff off the bat?
Plus whakittens gonna take like 2 weeks or so to get it made with having daily crafting components and such, personaly I do not feel this is done to ruin the game I feel its done to make getting it a little more involved and doing it in a way that noone can just 24/7 rush the game and lets even people who play little like 2 or 4 hours a day personaly I see nothing wrong with this.
I think in my opion people should really stop with the I want it now personality most mmo games that just hand you stuff from the start and you get it fast ussaly dies off matter of fact when this game first started people rushed to level 80 and complained about the lack of content cause they blew though it fast. But most MMO games I played you do not just get that nice item or whatnot fast it would take time.
Also it was stated that ascended gear was like a middle mile stone from exotic to legendary a long long time ago so its not like its a surprise they went this route these items are for more dedicated players but not in as such with being in game 8 hours plus but people who spend at least some time daily in the game, this is what I got from what I read from the ascended crafting.
Plus while I have not done fractual I know laurals you do not just get them like ultra fast for the ascended gear it has either so ascended for me has already been a save up and having to wait and play daily for it thing for me.
P.S they really need to look at this forums filter it filtered something that wasnt even gonna be a bad word but I guess better it be doing it job or trying than not heh.

If it was introduced for Fractals only, it should only have the infusion slot, not buffed stats.

The whole idea and their explanation of it is contradictory onto itself.
Reason 1: Bridge the time gap between exotic and legendary. … Not everyone is going for a legendary. Id imagine many arent. For many, there is no time gap. Many wanted to get their exotics and move onto other fun parts of the game. Now, that is being turned upside down.

Reason 2: Ascended gear is needed for fractals due to AR slots. If you don’t run fractals, then you don’t need the AR slots hence you do not need the gear. So…why is ascended gear being introduced into every other avenue of the game if its sole use and purpose is for fractals and agony resist? If you don’t need agony resist to take down shadow behemoth, complete COF P1, or particpate in WvW, why does it exist in these parts of the game? If AR is unique to fractals only, why is it even allowed in open world? Makes no sense.
These are two reasons given by Anet. Both end up contradicting themselves. As a result, we have the “better than exotic” tier being slowly released to us. First, it was a mammoth grind to acquire the laurels, ectos, and pristine relics to get the already existing ascended pieces. Now they will time gate it, and require an irritating amount of resources to create, forcing you into avenues of the game that you might not normally traverse which again, contradicts a lot of the core of the game of ‘play how you want to play’. This all becomes a grind because a lot of it probably is not “fun” to many, and you need to do this repetitive crap over and over until your eyes bleed. Thus, we have grind.

No wait, the Holy Crusaders of the White Knight’s Order must see it too.
Ascended weapons are just beginning. Considering that you will need at least 3, but 4-6 just for 1 character and 1 build makes it huge grind just for that.
Now throw in all trinkets just for 1 character and one build, at least 14-16 new infusions and 6 armor pieces (which will be even bigger grind than weapons), 4-6 ascended sigils and 6 ascended runes just for 1 character and 1 build.
Legendary weapon grind will seem like a fond memory.
What you are looking at is Korean grinder in the making that puts even classic Korean grinders like L2 to shame.
And then level cap raise will come and render it all obsolete.
Or if your build gets nerfed to the ground lol

I don’t know if I should be depressed or hysterical about that quote after it was one of the main reasons I got hyped for this game only to be severely let down after playing GW2. Still enjoy the game though.

I think most people have a realistic chance of obtaining ascended weapons, it will take much longer for some, but I still think it’s realistic. Unless they decide not to do world bosses, not kill any champions, ot gather materials, etc.
(vs ascended back pieces, where if you don’t do fractals, you’re not getting one)
^ Of course, this is just assuming the t7 drops from these things aren’t going to be minimal.

Unless ascended will scale with level. Otherwise, I will laugh at every single person on these forums that have supported the notion that this game is not moving toward a gear treadmill.
They should have just copied the skin system from DCUO and then made some skins super rare drops. Could have also tied certain skins to dungeons. But nope, instead they went for the gear treadmill nobody wanted and we’re stuck with transmutation stones.

You’re praising them for not doing exactly what they’ve done. They capitulated when they added ascended trinkets for the crowd that burned through content then complained that there was no end game. I rarely craft in any mmo and to now make a BiS piece of gear more or less exclusive to crafting is just ugh for me. My disappointment is compounded by Anet’s decision to go this way with their game, I realize they want to be a popular mmo….but pandering to the crowd that has been trained to only see progression as increasing stats just really makes me sad for the future of the genre as a whole. Unimaginative players that are comfortable with unimaginative design, are going to keep mmorpg game development status quo for a very long time.

I think the biggest mistake Anet made was not to inform the players to this effect prior to releasing Ascended gear. I think due to all the excitement it was simply forgotten to be mentioned.

Actually, it never was. Ascended gear was never planned before launch. A lot of people say Anet said that, when they never did. Here’s a quote that I posted in another thread that explains it.
The first revelation was that “in retrospect it would have been better to have included Ascended gear at launch”, wrote Whiteside. As we know, Ascended gear was designed to sit between Exotic and Legendary items. “It was not specifically designed before launch,” Whiteside added. “However, the concept of progression rewards with a shallow curve bridging other rewards was.” The whole debate about a new tier of armour being added post-launch to placate goalless hardcore players would have been avoided, too.
So Ascended gear was never planned before release. Those who say that, are wrong.

There are two possibilities. The first possibility is corporate meddling. The folks at NCSoft (or possibly Nexon) pulled rank and told the developers what they would and would not do with their game. The second possibility is the developers sold out. They realized somewhere along the way that the game they wanted to make wouldn’t be as profitable as the game the game they’re making.

I agree. And at one point they said they wanted to hold monthly AMA on reddit. When they did this shortly after the intro of ascended gear, I had high praise for them aside from the fact that they began this downward spiral.
About 9 months later, we havent had a single AMA.
So yeah, I wonder what is going on with arenanet… If the people running the show actually believe what they say to the press.
I think Colin J. has a handle on whats what, but I really hope HE doesn’t believe this crap is actually good for the game, or at all pushes the genre forward. He is the one I respect the most at arenanet, also because he is the face of arenanet. If he came in here and told us whats what, which ended up being “yeah, we are moving toward this type of grind…” i’d politely bow out of the game forever and not surface on these forums again.
Until then, I want someone to try to convince me that this is at all what the game was supposed to be. This isn’t guild wars 2.

Remembering who is in charge of the EverQuest IP, I’m really not thinking that will happen. But then, they did make the grindfest which was the original game. (“There are no such thing as Heck Levels. It’s just a misperception.”) So if you want to hang your hopes on that?

No. I have read the entire interview. He was talking about all gear not just legendaries. He was explaining the reason Guild Wars had max stat gear that was only differentiated by looks. Once you maxed out, they never created another tier of gear with better stats. They kept introducing gear that had better cosmetic appeal.

If they had given ascended gear exotic stats with the inclusion of infusions there would be no issue.
To be fair I don’t think Mike O’Brien was lying when he said it just like Colin wasn’t lying about the ‘fun’ element. But the fact is they panicked and have gone back on these statements and their original vision for the game. A vision that was used to market the game. Now they appear to have no overarching vision going forward.

Unfortunately, most gamers want to be able to depend on statements of direction from game developers. It’s really the only way we know whether we want to stick with a franchise.

The company is built around the idea of iteration. They change stuff up when they see things aren’t working. They kill entire ideas. Devs are told not to be too attached to their ideas because they might well change. Anet has been up front about iteration long before launch. They try things they see if they work, they change them. Even major stuff like having energy in the game.
So how does this interview and everything they said about iteration stack up against a single or even a couple of old quotes.
MMOs have changed. They’ve moved the goal post. It was always a possibility because they iterate. They saw something wasn’t working and they changed it.
If they hadn’t changed it when they saw it wasn’t working, they’d have been lying about iteration.

My disappointment is compounded by Anet’s decision to go this way with their game, I realize they want to be a popular mmo….but pandering to the crowd that has been trained to only see progression as increasing stats just really makes me sad for the future of the genre as a whole. Unimaginative players that are comfortable with unimaginative design, are going to keep mmorpg game development status quo for a very long time.
I really think arenanet wanted to be the game to change the genre. Nope.
I look to Everquest Next to do that.

Gw2 had a great potential, but the problem lies on both sides, devs lied but I suppose they did it (also) because the whole game has been invaded by a crowd of brainwashed human-shaped bots.

The company is built around the idea of iteration. They change stuff up when they see things aren’t working. They kill entire ideas. Devs are told not to be too attached to their ideas because they might well change. Anet has been up front about iteration long before launch. They try things they see if they work, they change them. Even major stuff like having energy in the game.
So how does this interview and everything they said about iteration stack up against a single or even a couple of old quotes.
MMOs have changed. They’ve moved the goal post. It was always a possibility because they iterate. They saw something wasn’t working and they changed it.
If they hadn’t changed it when they saw it wasn’t working, they’d have been lying about iteration.
Iteration? Doing a 180 regarding vertical progression…completely changing the fundamental basis upon which you’ve built your game is just “iteration”? So they’re just trying things to see if they work, then? If horizontal progression didn’t work, then how did ArenaNet ever move forward with that notion after it not working for seven years in the original Guild Wars?

Guild Wars 1 was a different game, with a different design, and a different type of play. I remarked back then it resembled Diablo 2 a lot, being basically group-based play with lobbies in the towns to form up, sell your loot, and go back out.
Half the achievements/titles were grindy as all heck, and the most prestigious items were often exceedingly ugly. And you might think no two players looked alike but there were a lot who either went all-black or all eye-blindingly pink.

They tried cosmetic only rewards and saw that wasn’t working. So yes, the threw it out. It’s the difference between intention and what you can do once the game is out.
I’m happy personally with cosmetic only gear, and in fact, this game isn’t immersive enough for me. It’s not the game I thought it would be. But I understand why it’s not the game I thought it would be. If I had responsibility for a huge and expensive project, I’m not sure what choices I would have made to save it.
The population was going down fast. The game didn’t have the stickiness.
My hope now is that the game will have more stickiness with the achievement point hunt and Anet can stop coming out with new tiers of gear. That would be ideal.
