No More Power Gain
well, if ascended gear takes like 2 weeks to craft, the next tier is gonna take 4 week to craft lol?
I’m fine with gear progression, I just don’t like the fact that it’s time-gated the way it is. I’d rather if it was limited to say 1 piece per week from bosses or chests rather than having to log in every day solely to craft an item. I’d be fine if they keep adding teirs of gear or raise the level cap or any of that. I don’t agree with making people log in every day just to craft an item for gear(that’s no fun in my opinion), it should be added to new harder bosses/dungeons or something along those lines. I don’t think you should ever be able to craft the highest teir of gear, but then I’m not a big fan of crafting in general so it’s just like my opinion, man.
Edit: I want more gear progression, eventually.
Can this stupid argument end already? They’ve said time and time again that they won’t add any more tiers.
Secondly: they’ve used all 6 primary and secondary colors of the CMYK color wheel to colorized the rarities of items. There aren’t any left.
I’m torn with this idea.
On one hand, I want more power, always! I want to have bigger numbers appear when I hit my enemy! I want to kill more stuff, and possibly faster!
On the other hand, gear treadmills get old after a while.
I do NOT think ascended is much of a treadmill, heck, it’s barely a step.
I just think that in order for Guild Wars to work as it has already, if there IS another tier of equipment added a year from now, there needs to be a reason for it. For example, a new dungeon with level 85 enemies where the new tier would be useful for it, and beating it rewards new titles, skins, or minis, or something like that.
I’d like to say that if a new dungeon is added, it should just be more challenging mechanically, forcing better co-operation and skill, but really, who would play that often? If people wanted that, it wouldn’t be absolute hell trying to find a group for Arah.
No gear treadmill please. I, for one, am leaving if they add any new stat tiers.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.

They said they won’t be adding anymore sets this year.
I think thats my biggest concern really. I put in effort to finish ascended weps/armor then 6 months later they potentially make it worthless by adding a new max level or new tier of armor.
It is definitely an uncertainty that I think is the main cause for a lot of the complaints. Guess we’ll see next year how it all unfolds.
Though I think if they do add new tiers, they should give us the ability to upgrade current gear in the MF with some recipe. So that gear isn’t totally vendor/salvage trakitten least.
I’m not too sure where I stand on the subject though. Its annoying for sure, but it is a aspect that you can’t deny its existence. I honestly just think I would enjoy the game more if I didn’t have to worry about gear anymore after this tier finishes up. But they seem to think its a way to give us something to keep us coming back (I thought that was what the LS was for :P).
/shrug Overall, it feels like an unnecessary inclusion imo.

@OP: The game’s stat progression is vapid and pointless. So no, I’d rather not have another tier.
I’m cool with gear progression once a year. lol

Ascended and legendary is last tier, with legedanry u just have all stat combos avaliable to choose from weapon menu or something

As far as I can tell, Anet always intended to have ascended weapons/armor. As of now, the current best weapon in the game is a legendary and Anet said they wanted the legendary only to be cosmetically better and not statistically better. If you look right now, there’s a gap of damage between the exotic weapons and the legendary. The ascended weapons will fix that by bridging the gap and will have the same damage and stats of the legendary weapons.
Ascended is the last tier.

The last one promised this year*
I don’t think they will add another tier to the game, and I wouldn’t mind that.
Reason why I don’t think they’ll add another tier:
I’m glad my argument is catching on. It’s stupid to think that they’ll deviate away from it.
Agree with OP on stopping VP. It doesn’t really matter whether you think they will add another tier or not, simply because you have no way of knowing. One word from Anet stating clearly that they are stopping vertical progression will stop the angst that we’ve all seen since last November. I mean, look at the general discussion home page. What do we have 4 threads or so on VP currently. Anet can stop this madness, but so far they have refused to. Anet, please stop the madness.
Maybe the better question would be: increase level-cap or not?
We’re good now, never increase.
no more higher tiers after ascended
no more higher levels after level 80
thank you.
Honestly, Ascended EQ isn’t even completed yet. Nor are all the available prefixes represented at this time. (Hello, Carrion and Valkyrie!) At this rate, it’d be kind of stupid for them to even think about another Tier of EQ. Although, I rather like the color wheel argument.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior

You do realize that the linked page nowhere says that Ascended is the last tier? It may be the last in terms of named tiers but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of VP. Here’s what Chris W said in the AMA: “That is why there is no plan for new Rarity Tiers of loot but there are plans to enhance or gain items within the existing rarity design whose properties continue on a shallow power curve”. There wasn’t planning around another tier, at the time, but there is a plan to continually raise its power level (infusions were mentioned). Whether Ascended is the last tier is a red herring. VP is the problem and VP is what must be stopped.
I’m good with no more tiers of gear, no more power creep. Having a definitive top end to stats should make balancing a little easier, instead of always having to worry about it.
I’m all good with lots of horizontal progression though. More armor skins, more weapon skins, titles to drown myself in, skills to hunt down…. Paradise…
If you can’t ever improve your character, what’s the point? That means the biggest part of an MMORPG – the item hunt – is over one year into the lifecycle of the game.
Not good.
You can improve your character without ever climbing stats though. This was proven in GW1, which had a level cap of 20, and yet people loved the horizontal progression.

And there are plenty of MMOs based around the sort of progression you would prefer. The Guild Wars name has been about doing things differently for people who don’t like eternally grinding for gear.

I am fairly certain that current mf gear holders will get a one time item to change the mf stat, it was what I gathered from the dev livestream where the question was asked how it was being handled. Sounds like it will function similarly to the way legendaries will now function but with only a one time use. It is possible I misunderstood what Linsey was saying, but I am pretty sure that is what is going down.

On that part I was talking about mystic forge upgrading not magic find. I thought I should change it after I wrote it since it is the same initials as magic find. Sorry for the confusion.
And it was just a rhetorical statement about if there ever was another upgrade of armor tiers that would make the current stats worthless (past the obviously expected coming stats).

Oh, heh yeah my bad I failed at reading context this morning

Eh, you can’t really point to GW1 as the bastion of MMO success. One, because it wasn’t a real MMO. And 2, because the number of players was very small compared to what success is measured by in the space.

Just because it wasn’t a ‘real mmo’ doesn’t really make any difference. There are plenty of niche games out there. The point I was making was that games have done it, and have been successful. A small player base true, but still running with no plans to close those servers, which says a lot considering the number of other games that have failed.

That’s actually the biggest reason and difference. GW2 is competing in an entirely different space and charcter progression is the name of the game – and that includes, primarily, power.
Sure, there are folks that just enjoy skins and titles and things, but that number is much smaller.
Also, if GW2 had “non-combat” activities, it would be more plausible. If you could progress through fishing or housing or diplomacy or something. But since everything you do in GW2 is combat-related and one-dimensional, players need to eventually feel like their character is getting better, not different.
I understand what you are saying, it’s just not the reality of the genre GW2 lives in. If ArenaNet is happy with GW2 continuing to be that niche game, then they are set… but I have a feeling they are not ok with that, given Mike O’Brien’s quote about “beating Warcraft.”
i never heard of gw1 before gw2 and i used to pay sub for lineage 2 which is another game from NCsoft…so yeah stop saying ‘’gw1 success’’
and yeah if it wasnt a real mmo it makes a huge difference, like another level, is like being another genre.
we already had power gain, white blue green yellow orange but apparently since purple isnt for free and isnt drop by a centaur in queensdale, that is what people complaint, that was one mistake from anet in the start, gear was for free, the game was so gold dependent (still it is, trade wars), so muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ‘’no working as intended’, bugs, it was an insane grind for some cosmetics was worse than grinding in lineage 2, etc
its been one year, who knows what will happen next year or what will be added
Oh but we could see something like:
Revered → Teal color
Deified → Red color
Was a joke I posted long ago in a thread titled “So What’s Next?” Neither of those colors had been used at the time. We still have some wiggle room for different colors.
Don’t doubt what could be but hasn’t been done. There are no solid promises about gear. The loopholes in statements are there. Doubtful, improbable but possible.

And, if you read Colin’s latest blog post on the future he talks about skill/ability progression (a major aspect of horizontal progression) as something to do “instead” of a gear grind. Sadly, immediately after that post we get more Ascended gear and more power creep. The main reason the forums still roil is that they haven’t come out and said that the VP will be ending. Until then it will be business as usual on the forums and in the game. Grinding in the game and raging on the forums.

Well, we knew that the rest of ascended was coming at some point. However, he does state that after ascended they don’t want to do more vertical. (Key world there though is ‘want’ not ‘wont’) They plan on focusing on horizontal for now. Which was good news. We’ll see how it pans out.

Depends on how fanatic of a item collector/player you are; only one friend of mine has any Ascended gear yet, a trinket or two, and I just finished completing trinkets on my main. My second character doesn’t even have all Exotics yet, none of my friends is fully Exoticed on all their 80s either. With the recipes I’ve seen for Ascended weapons, I would be surprised if any of us has any sooner than 6 months from now, let alone any fully equipped, let alone progress on armor, if that gets released.
I’m contemplating slowly working on Ascended weapons and armor, but if its only going to last a year before needing to be replaced, I won’t bother.

You are on the very very slow end of the curve. Just like they can’t cater to the hardcore, they can’t cater to you either.
But progression has to happen… the game will die without it.

All games in or near the genre need to provide a mechanism for character progression. Vertical progression is an old formula that a lot of us have burned out on. I, for one, came to GW2 from WoW to escape vertical progression. Horizontal, and particularly ability/skill progression, provides a sense of character progression and expansion without the negative effects (mandatory treadmill ride) of vertical progression. Many were waiting for a new, more thoughtful MMO like this. Many hoped that GW2 would be this MMO.
