I will agree on mounts being needed in WvW. It’s a travesty traveling back and forth when you don’t have the waypoints.

I don’t think they are needed at all… Actually I hope they will never ever be implemented for PvP, even if someday they find it interesting to add them to PvE people.

I was prepared to disagree with the OP, but then I gave it some thought. Correctly done, mounts could contribute a lot to GW2.

Hear me out, here’s my thoughts on how ArenaNet could handle it (hope they’re paying attention too):

  • Movement speed would only be as fast as the speed you get when running with a speed boost, except permanent while mounted.
  • While on the mount, the mount can act as your weapon. It would unlock a new group of weapon skills in combat so that you could guide the mount to attack. If you lose half your hit points, you are thrown from the mount and temporarily knocked down, and cannot get back on the mount until after the combat ends.
  • Any monster ability that would knock you down would also knock you off your mount, not allowing you to get back on the mount until after the combat is over.
  • You would be dismounted automatically if you entered any interior area or any city. They aren’t needed there and shouldn’t be allowed. Especially in dungeons.
  • If ANet wants more gold sinks, your mount could require an upkeep to keep it fed and whatnot.
  • Mounts can’t jump. No using mounts for jumping puzzles.

Those are my thoughts as to how they could add them. (It would probably be an expansion thing, though…I can’t imagine something like that in a content update). Thoughts?

Not true. If you were thrown from your horse and couldn’t get back on it until after combat was over, but wanted to escape the combat (maybe you were losing), then I think a speed boost would be a life-saver.

Also, I imagine that mounts would be expensive or level restricted, so not everyone would have one at every level.

There are many ways it could be balanced.

Honestly, I don’t care if the game ever gets mounts. I’m fine without them, and I was prepared to disagree with the OP completely. But, it just occurred to me that there are ways it could work if ANet wants to explore the option, that’s all.

I don’t feel the mounts necessary and fitting with the game design.
We haven’t them in the GW lore (except dolyaks and Necro horsmen).
Waypoint costs are largely compensated by the loot and the event rewards.

Mounts are a great concept, but in every single MMO I’ve played except one (LoTRO), the actual implementation ranged from silly to downright ridiculous. Mount acquisition quickly turns into an arms race of sorts, with each new introduction having to “out-cool” the previous iterations, until you realize your MMO world has been turned into a Disney-esque cartoon carnival with flying carpets, roaring hotrods, glittery pink unicorns, etc. Faster, faster, faster! Neon colors! Now with flying!!!

I won’t be surprised if we eventually get some kind of mount. I just hope ArenaNet shows more restraint than most game developers in this regard.

with the size of the WvW maps and the mind numbingly boring runs around where theres no action except a chicken and a wolf hitting each other, and a tree i would greatly appreciate mounts in this setting.

however if a player hits you = a dismount.

Yeah, the rest of the world is debatable but in WvW it just wouldn’t make sense. It would ruin it and only increase the amount of silly zerging.

Personally I would like to see sensible looking vanity mounts available (don’t want everyone in LA sitting on tiny Zhaitan’s). These would be to collect, maybe some prestige mounts to go with armour sets (a Vigil horse for example), but with no speed increase.

mounts are an overdone tired and boring staple of wow clones. they do not increase travel time because the distance between content pockets is increased to account for them. which was taken to such extreme measures in swtor that after that debacle i would be happy to never see another wow clone style mount in an mmo for some time.

I don’t understand either. There is a number of speed boost abailities and you can fast travel nearly everywhere, but still it’s an MMO and should have mounts. There has actually been quite a few times when I was running to do my story quest which took me from the sylvari area to the human area and I’m just like my lord… you need mounts! idc if they add mounts or not – as it is trying to navigate the terrain on foot can be “complicated” (i know the more i remeber the terrain the better i will get at it) so i dont think i would use a mount even if there were mounts

this game is just way more “life like” when it comes to terrain navigation that i think a bulky mount would slow me down andkitten me off more then it would help me

not to mention having to wait to mount up cuz of global cooldown for button, and also having to actually press a button to mount … eeek … im nearly always fighting/gathering so unless it’s mounted combat/gathering, i wouldnt even stay mounted long enough for it to be a benefit

honestly, a perma speed buff would work better for me personally then any old clunky hugekitten button pressing space and time waster… hehe

but again, idc if mounts are in the game long as i dont have to use them if i dont wanna

If I don’t like it, I won’t do it.

Sorry Airala but I’m going to go with what they’ve actually said – “there are no mounts in GW2,” instead of what someone wants to hear. that is missing the on intial release that was tacked on the end of that. They are talking about flying mounts in both interviews, and I am not saying the "yet* is definitive, all I am saying is that they have left themselves room to implement them.

If you can find them saying that the game will never have mounts, that doesnt have a carefully worded “on intial release”, or isnt specifically talking about flying mounts, then go ahead rock my world. In my first post. I was curious to see where they said it would never have mounts( that it isnt that kind of game) then after searching and getting inaccurate summaries of interviews; I got a harsher on people saying that it did.

Until then I have to wonder if you have read your links, or if might be a troll. Sometimes I fear people lack basic reading comprehension, read the links provided. Decide for yourselfs if they make a definitive “omgeerrrd no mounts eva, this aint WoW you scrubs” or if they leave room open for it to be added at a later date if players really wanted them.

Quoting what you’ve written:
“Trying to be different” Is not a valid reason for trying to milk players for way point costs.

Aahahah, really? Are you trying to say that you can’t even afford the waypoint travel fees? Or that you are in any way shape or form forced to buy gold from Arenanet because otherwise you don’t have enough? Look buddy, gold sinks are fine for the game’s health and gold is not really needed/easily obtained. I’m level 80 with max stats in 1 month of playing and I’ve never had any trouble with gold, so much that I even bought some gems with it. Why would Arenanet make it so easy to gain max stats/max level if they wanted to milk money from us?

Waypoints being there doesn’t mean you should have access to any place of the map instantly and at no cost. One example is that at level 80 it costs you about 2.5 silver to teleport to someplace 20+ minutes away from where you are, but even when the place is 30 seconds away from you it doesn’t go any lower than 1.3-1.5s. What does that mean? That you are supposed to walk inside a map. It’s not a biggie, really, you can clear a map from side to side in less than 5 minutes, less with swiftness. Only use waypoints when you want to move 1-2 or more maps away from where you are, when they actually save you quite some time. You can even go to LA for free and from there get to the 5 capitals also for free. Why would you even want to implement mounts?

but you are saying that waypoints are a problem because you waste money on them? you can usually make more coins in your way than you have payed for it… unless you spam it, which i don’t see happening…

“If you still can think of an argument, disagree with this scenario: You are in WvWvW and your guild mates have called you in, so u zone in and have to run 3/4 across the map to get to the battle they are in, so u spend a few minutes running across thekittenthing only to be ganked by some random team of badguys just as u were so close, only to find your nearest way point is the one you just ran from”

Quoting you again as for some reason I can’t seem to find the button that allows me to do it.

Actually, what you proposed as a strong argument for “why should mounts be implemented into GW2” is possibly the weakest one I usually hear, and instead makes a great example for people who don’t want them.

You see, in WvWvW the key to success is strategy. You have roughly the same amount of players on each server during most of the day so WHERE and HOW you employ said manpower is what makes the difference between winning or losing. That may seem you like bullkitten, but that only means you play WvW as a “random soloer” and the only option available to you is zerging with other random players, which works well enough for people to keep doing it. Arguably, having a strategy is much more fun/better for the game then general zerging from tower to tower.

To make it short, introducing mounts ( or rather, the speed buff they imply ) would just promote zerging over strategy. Why? For a number of reasons.
*First, people who move faster also zerg faster, while setting up defenses still remains slow.
*Two, bought waypoints are much less important, so why even bother unlocking them?
*Three, killing players/group of players, especially when against zergs, matters a lot less, as they will be back at the fight in mere seconds. As a side effect, this could lead to neverending battles with the 2-3 armies constantly being reinforced.

I could keep going on and provide more examples related to the “mounts in WvW” argument but I got things to do and I’ve already wasted too much time.

There are many reasons to put mounts into the game but the OP’s example of using them in WvW to get to their friends is absolutely the wrong reason.

WvW is about territory control. It MUST take time to cross zones in WvW or else gaining territory is meaningless. You might as well just put people into a big line when they get into WvW and just fight.

Plus there always needs be a danger of getting ambushed when travelling in WvW. If you ever feel ‘safe’ getting to your friends then you’re missing the point of open world PvP. You should never feel safe travelling in WvW.

And getting ambushed in WvW is not griefing, it is part of the gameplay and tactics. If you can’t avoid getting ambushed by using knowledge of the terrain and choice of paths then you need to figure out which abilities and builds have movement/CC-breaks and equip those if your want to get around WvW. Customizing your builds is part of the game as well.

The time needed for troop movement has always been a critical factor in the history of human warfare. Wars have been won or lost because troops were or were not able to get where they were needed, or they were ambushed on the way.

This is reflected in our games of strategy as well. Look at chess, each piece has limitations in how they can move and the more powerful pieces move further.

Giving significantly better movement to players with mounts in WvW would unbalance all the effort ArenaNet has made to make WvW approachable. It would be such a major advantage that no one would bother going into WvW until they had attained mounts. And that goes against ArenaNet basic design philosophy that players don’t need to grind levels to enjoy the game, they should be able to have fun (including WvW) from the start.

Well i personally love mounts and i really don’t anything regret them even flying ones i even pretty much enjoy it, thought i really think if they will be adding mounts they would want to make everyone happy and lets say pretty much everybody who want mounts are mostly for the estetic of sitting in LA with a awesome mount and people going pass by you saying : oh that’s cool i want it too :o.. and the people that don’t like them is either because they don’t like mounts or they don’t like the speed boost. So i really think if they ever will add mounts they will just be your normal speed, they wont add any speed boost and even may slow you down a little as they will only be able to walk or something. So yeah, i really see this problem being solved by adding Mounts which don’t give you any buff in speed and maybe also even slowing you down a bit. So yeah, my option =d

I can’t believe this discussion is still going on.

You do not need mounts. You do not need mounts. You do not need mounts.

Three points are all you need.

-Most classes have a speed buff of some kind.

-Waypoints are placed all over the map, and the game is balanced to make the cost to use them not completely outrageous.

-Guild Wars 2 encourages exploration. Running around and into something. The entire leveling progression is balanced around this mechanic. This is also the case in WvW. Dying means something. If you’re out alone you are vulnerable. It encourages you to stay in groups so you can be revived from being downed/killed. Mounts would just see massive assaults on far reaching corners of the map and it would be impossible for one side to maintain momentum because of how scattered people are.

Stop treating this game from a WoW-esque standpoint already. I played WoW since vanilla release, and I find Guild Wars 2 to be the most refreshing take on an MMO to date (Played Ultima Online, EQ1, FFIX as well.)

Please no mounts. The implementation of them will lead to a million new issues (unless you go for a dismount on meeting enemy-approach which just feels incomplete to me).
a) animations: time spend on various mounts with various character models that can really be spend better elsewhere
b) combat: You have to come up with a balanced, working system for mounted combat. What about stats? will the mount be targetable? will the mount take part in the fighting? Fitting new skills for every profession while mounted and their balance and animation? This is really not an addition, but designing a new combat system as big as the one that was allready implemented for “normal” combat, complete with balance issues and what not.
c) terrain: as quirky as the Super Mario part of GW2 feels at times, they put a lot of work into the terrain to be explorable by an unmounted character. Once we add mounts to this, I think we will have graphical and gameplay glitches for ages.

I have yet to see a game (of cause I do not know all games of the world and would listen to suggestions) where mounted combat is implemented well. Even single-player games I know fail abysmally there, maybe Darksiders, but the combat system is really a mounted buttonmashing (don´t get me wrong, they game is great), the mounted part is rather small and it was probably in the design from the very beginning,

And what is to gain: Admittingly cool looking characters more or less, probably not much more. When all bugs are fixed, all balancing done well, all of the game world + underworld and all GW1 classes put into the game, maybe then move attention to mounts, but not now and not in the near future.

I don’t really feel like the world is big enough for mounts. Teleporting is a bit extortionate at current rates, though. It’d be nice to see it priced so that going a long way is alright to save time, but a short way is cheaper yet not as cost-effective. Then you don’t just zip around the world like a spaz, but you don’t need to take a vacation to run from one end of the game to another, either.

Frankly, it would look pretty daft, too. They’d need to add in things to the scenery and NPC behaviour. Notice that nobody else rides things, only uses the odd pack animal – and where would all these mounts live, lore wise? Not a lot of stables around. The game just clearly wasn’t designed for mounts at all, and it would need a pretty drastic change for them to fit in.

Also… what moves fast that you would ride?

EDIT:

So many people are automaticly agianst things that WoW has done in some way and constantly seem to bring WoW up. If WoW was your mother, then Freud would have a field day.

Yes most proffs have a speed buff, well kitten to those that dont. Waypoints are everywhere, and I think the cost if fine; it is just I would like there to be something inbetween walking through an area, and just skipping it. Once I have explored an area, I would like to be able to briskly move through it on my epic kittencrushing mount, is that really so bad? Should I have to be bored running through a place I have seen 50 times, or feel obligated to do events that I have done 5o times?

WvWvW mounts would be terrible, but keeps should have waypoints built into them automaticly, this would stop a lot of the no mount complaints and would make taking keeps all the sweeter. You would still need to run to battles, but you could say a lot of pointless time.

And to the people who are argueing about how historically getting troops into battle, and where to use manpower was/is very important. This is a fantasy game, one where some stuff doesnt make sense. No fighting force in history would make individual soldiers run to the battle, they would organize battalions and then send them in waves. If the game did that it would be awesome; but now the choice is to run alone (possibly getting ganked) and hope that the battle will still be there, or sit around hoping enough ppl will zone in so that you have some backup.

The game right now is awesome, and while it doesn’t need mounts, it doesnt need for them to be absent. I have been on the forums way too much this past day, time to actually go play the game. later peeps

Cosmetic mounds as vanity items would be entertaining. The problems with faster travel have already been mentioned and if those could be worked out, I’d be fine with more shinies in the game.

Mounts should only be allowed in WvW with very careful balancing. A level-based movement advantage would drastically change the WvW balance as I mention in a previous post.

Now mounts in a structured PvP matches that give special, mount-based abilities would be a fun twist I think.

Because the game was NOT designed to include mounts. Is not about not giving you what you want its simply that by DESIGN there will be no mounts.

Cancer is also a Zodiac sign.

Wow, not many animal lovers here, whether pro or con mounts. Isn’t anyone else interested in building a more interesting and believable (well, suspension of disbelief) virtual world? Mounts don’t have to go so fast that you’d “miss the roses”, or events. I’d certainly stop for a downed player. I agree though, that they can be a clutter in crowded spaces, so perhaps they could be stabled while in cities. And while providing fantastic aerial views, flying mounts would unfortunately ruin the jumping puzzles.

And for everyone who thinks base run speed is ok, I hope you’ve at least played a Norn guardian for a bit to gain a proper perspective. =)

OMG OMG I wanna Princess Miyamorei Kadenza mount!!! :D I know she’s technically an alicorn, but still ^_^

Anyway, I have had issues with mounts in previous games such as SWTOR (couldn’t drive a few feet without sandpeople knocking you off. Other planets were just as bad though thankfully Ilum and Hoth were mount friendly). I also remember Aeonaxx campers in Deepholm and even camping myself and then thinking “Screw it, it isn’t worth it”. Besides, the flameward hippogryph already looked cool and took a long time of grinding dailies to unlock. I also had a nice stable of dragons from that Burning Crusade zone. I liked collecting mounts and was basically my endgame activity away from battlegrounds. I also hated ranged mobs since they could knock you off flying mounts =(

Maybe something like WoW or SWTOR would be good (though obviously no flying mounts even though I like them because GW2 just isn’t built for them. Besides, you might crash into an invisible wall lol!) but with far more tolerance to mob hits so you can’t be knocked off so easily (though still possible but never in one hit).

“please believe me this is not FUN, even if you have convinced yourself that it is, lol.”

You don’t speak for me and please don’t tell me what is fun for me. And as for your WvW example how is it balanced if one side is losing a battle and calls for reinforcements that can almost instantly be there to reinforce them? That is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. It absolutely should take you a measurable amount of time to get to the battle otherwise the zergs that already control WvW maps would be unstoppable.

In the size of this virtual world, you wouldn’t need mounts at all… and there aren’t actually a whole lot of speedy animals zooming around, you know? I can outrun them already if they aren’t slowing me down. The way they have it now, just using things like Dolyaks to move heavy stuff, makes more sense in that setting.

Well the devs said they would NEVER implement flying mounts, altho they never said the same about normal ones.

Personally, I don’t think they should be implemented mostly because the way the game works and certain buffs we have that would become completely useless because of them.

Also I won’t even start to discuss the issues mounts on WvW would create. If you cant figure them out by yourself, you probably don’t care at all about WvW or never set foot in there.

I heard somewhere people saying about that, because of some lore related events, Tyria has no horses. Not sure if it was made to prevent players from asking for mounts or not.

Anyways, IMO, please, no mounts.

You have wps and every class has some swiftness skill…. if you just wanna go from A to B, then swap some things around to make it happen.

Yes, wps can be pricey but if you take a little detour every know and then to gather ore/wood, whatever crafting mats are sellable on the TP, you can recoup those losses easily.

My only gripe is how your movement speed slows down while in combat (or at least it seems that way).

I’m all for mounts in a purely decorative fashion, they shouldn’t run faster than regular means. The zones are pretty small, and they have waypoints which makes them very very small in reality. The running to the waypoint the first time is what makes the game fun, you see vistas, little caves and nooks and crannies you wouldn’t otherwise see.

It just seems that getting across the zone the first time isn’t that bad at all, and getting across the 2nd time is obviously easy because you have instant waypoints mapped out.

But, as I said before, decorative mounts would be awesome.

I’d think that if people were mounted, they would be less likely to stop and interact with the world / player base.

While there is little stopping me from strolling on by a DE or a player in need, as it stands. I feel I would be more likely to ride on by if dismounting were a step in the process.

Along with that, really, when I’m riding around on a mount, I really don’t pay attention to anything around me other than my map. I’ve no concern with what’s around me, because I can mostly just outrun whatever I may run into. How it is now, I have to watch out. Else I’ll wonder my way into trouble. I have to cut my way through the world. Sure, I can run through everything, but my chances of dying, and having to pay that pesky wp fee are a good bit higher.

Don’t get me wrong. Mounts are awesome. I’m just thinking of reasons as to why they’ve not been included.

What type of mount are you talking about? The flying or ground mounts? I agree that flying mounts do take away the social aspect of the game since everyone is up in the air and not on the ground where you interact. Totally no FLYING mounts.

However, I see no problem at all with adding ground mounts to GW2. It’s pretty much the same as walking except you do it at a faster pace while riding a MOUNT in a FANTASY/DRAGON game. Anyways, World vs World I think would over all benefit the most..

If you are truly a die hard all for the experience no mounts stand, then how about letting people use mounts on maps that they have 100% completed?
