So, I’l get straight to the point. There is a severe lack of normal male armor in the game along with the ridiculous hairstyles for males. Most of the players pick an overly sexualized female character and use the skimpiest armor they can find. Of course its personal preference but its become extremely annoying to see that there are very very few good looking male characters. The game is slowly turning into an all-feminine character mixup. Why do I say this? Because more and more of pretty female armor and good looks is being added to the game and these are nice and amazing to look at but the male hairstyles (specifically human) and male armor are seriously ridiculous. Half of the male hairstyles look the same with just a few tweaks. I would suggest adding in a few “japanese style” hairstyles or hairstyles from other places in the world. Having hair that seems like its been superglued together or might fly off at any point is just weird. In contrast, female hairstyles are wavy, have a really pretty look and texture and look dazzling in different environments. But male hairstyles are just … well you can conduct a poll and find out for yourself. Also, male armor. Specifically male shoulders. How in heaven’s name is having a huge potato sized block of metal or cloth on your shoulders normal? The variety is there but its just tweaks of previously made armor. There needs to be diversity and style for male characters and their clothes too! Having only females look amazing in the game isnt fair. I hope you would conduct a poll on this matter because I am pretty sure atleast half of gw2 players are concerned about this.

For example (About bad male armor), Most of the heavy leggings look like metal underwear. Has no one seen any movies in this generation or read books about guards and warriors in the past? Men and women who fought wars, wore armor that was comfortable to wear. Not potato sized huge blocks of metal or cloth because that is simply unrealistic and actually insulting to the wearer.

It would be really nice if gw2 developers paid more attention to this because I am pretty sure you would not just increase in profits if you looked into this matter but also find more people liking the game because of variety for males. You might probably disregard this and throw this post into your online trash of issues but i humbly request you to make a poll regarding people’s preference of hairstyles and armor in the game. Also, you can find out for yourself from the statistics of how much of a specific type of armor was obtained in the game by different players. I am pretty sure there are armor pieces that very very few people even look at because it is simply just ridiculous.

Just to give a little idea of male hairstyles, I found a couple of styles that I think would look nice.

It’s funny you mention that the majority of people play female characters, with the skimpiest clothing. The other day I was looking around and thinking “They should’ve called this Girl Wars 2. I’m surrounded by an army of Human females, all wearing the most revealing armour combinations, fighting in a huge scale war. Is this a fashion shoot or a game about fighting dragons?”. I swear for every 1 male character, there’s about 15 female, the majority being Human female =P

Back on point, I agree that more attention should be put on the male characters. I’m happy with my characters. They turned out pretty cool. However, I only found one hairstyle that I liked on my Human. As you pointed out, a lot of the hairstyles just look the same for the males. I was more impressed with the Sylvari character creation than the Human male. I don’t know what the female Sylvari customization is like, as I didn’t look at it when I made my Sylvari.

The armour, I agree on, but I think the medium armour in general is pretty bland. Just trench coats and not much else. The heavy armour and light seems alright, but I guess it would be nice for us guys to have something other than robes for light armour.

Yeah I’ve been wanting more male skimpy for ages. Anet still won’t listen to our cries though :-(

And medium classes need more tops that don’t cover the derrière. The options for your chest is either trenchcoat, trenchoat, OR trenchcoat. With a side order of trenchcoat. Hence my engineer’s name:

Honestly I beleave (My opinion that is) that making umm… More armor to make males look better will not have that big of impact. Yes it is as Zaoda says that there would be nice for more jackets, shirts, vests and stuff for medium armor and less robes for Light and so on. (This goes for females too actually)

I don’t think though that that will change the fact that the playerbase is mostly male and most males do like girl and thus rather like to see a girls behind rather than a males behind when they run around in the game.

About the hair, I realy like the human male hair and I am pretty sure that there will be more in the future.

I’ve never got the whole “rather see a girl’s behind” reasoning behind playing a female character. It just seems like the default response to the question “Why are you playing as a girl?”. I’m zoomed out as far as possible whilst playing, so I can actually see all the action around me. Zoomed in at your character’s butt is going to reduce how effective you’re performing.

There’s nothing wrong with guys playing a female character, but that reason has become one of the biggest cliches out there =P

Well that’s why I used that reason. It may sound stupid and yes people do not look at the character when they play but I said it as an example, not so people would take me on the word. So what I mean is that most men (I think) finds Human Females most beautifull of all the races and sexes so thats why (I think) there are so many female characters out there.

Most of my male guildys who are married play more male characters than female characters and half of thous who arnt play more female char then males
And being in 4 different large guilds in the past, all the guild leaders main chars were male
Most male guildyys have a male char as main
One guildy of current guild plays exclusively female characters, because he wanna feel differently
I my self have 3 male and 2 female characters- fully clothed female mesmer(O Heresy) and female guardian with spiky temple Armor arm and shoulders and zodiac chest and legs (the blue skin is armor believe it or not XD)
I have spent around 4500 (700 not counting twilight)gold on my female guardian who is still in Orange gear
I spent around 2500gold on my male warrior who was my past main who sits on 2sets of ascended armor and 13 ascended weapons
I have spent around 1000 gold on my current main male necro who currently sits on 6 ascended weapons and 5/6 pieces of ascended armor
My female Mesmer and male engineer currently are my storage toon, both net worth 100-120gold in gear/skin (not counting imperial outfit on mesmer)

Life blast should hit twice and have its damage halfed
If Rocket Charge is only 2 leaps then it should look like 2 leaps
True Shot should be cast on the move

I never got the whole trend in making over sexualized eye candy female characters in mmorpgs. Yeah yeah I know, you would rather be staring at that all day than a dude but I never really understood why you would want to be doing that in a mmorpg anyway.

I always have, and always will choose the most gritty looking, angriest looking, dude character I can. To me that is what feels appropriate for a character in a game where I’m running around with cool weapons slaughtering all sorts of stuff.

I think this trend has really gotten out of control in the last couple of years. Games like Tera I cant even play certain classes because I just don’t want to be running around as a softcore cartoon porn character.

I dunno maybe I’m out of touch but I don’t want to be or get aroused in any way while playing a mmorpg….if that was my goal id just google image search something real and nice and look at that while I game…but again, pvp, clearing content, farming, these are things in a mmorpg I can do and I don’t need to have a “semi” during.

So yeah its all strange to me tbh. I would much rather have more interesting character creations than be in a game where (and it really is like this in most games) a majority of the player characters are over sexualized pieces of eye candy.

the female playerbase in GW2 is relatively big in comparison to other games actually.
But a lot of the women want the character they’re playing to look pretty and this is easier with the female PCs than with male PCs.

Thanks guys for the responses. Though the reason “watching a girls behind” is quite creepy even for a female virtual character. But oh well, personal preferences. Besides that, I am glad you guys noticed there is a lack of “good” variety for males. Okay, one of you guys said that not all classes have that much diversity but lets face it. Some races have really cool stuff while others don’t. And statistically speaking, like there definitely are more human females than any other race. But my issue is not "OMG, too many sexy females. report!!! " The issue is, why not show some love for males too? Also, please don’t tell me you have not noticed potato sized shoulders? And yes medium armor has a lot of trench coats and its kinda boring. What im saying is, instead of adding in outfits regularly why not add in armor pieces? That can be obtained via tp or through some achievement/event? like in silverwastes? Outfits only allow changing of colors. We cant take an outfit apart because well… they are outfits. Going back to the main topic, armor for males is pretty meh if you look at it overall. Great, people are interested in human females for whatever reason they like and its their choice certainly! but males need some life in their style and looks.

I actually like the male hairstyles, this is one of the few games where I have more than 1 choice that I like. That being said, more options are always good.
As for clothing go, I agree, I tend to see mostly female characters in skimpy outfits and I thought It was like tera that most female armors where like that, but then saw all female armor in game and most of it is not skimpy at all, but it’s the players that consistently choose the skimpy ones much more often than the rest.
I wouldn’t mind much if we males had similar options, but we’re not even close. I play a human male thief and I have NO skimpy options at all. 90% of the choices I have are long trenchcoats and clothes with long drapes on it. The few ones that are shorter are not skimpy at all. I don’t really mean I weant to go around fighing in a leather thong, but something like a leather harness for medium armor and pants with some holes in them like female have would be great.
When only females can wear skimpy clothing it reeks of sexism. And even though I know ArenaNet is a pretty decent company about that (kudos on that by the way) they could still make things more even for both genders.
The main point is to have choices, both for males and females. I don’t mind skimpy females much in here because they choose to do so, in other games like Tera, they don’t have much choices, they have to dress like that.
So please, ArenaNet, give us choices and make things more even, that’s what many of us are asking. The daydreamer’s finery was a nice step, but doesn’t really work for melee or non magical classes. Besides it has “buttflaps” too like someone said in other topic XD

I agree that it does seem a bit “creepy” that people would make a character, based on the reason of wanting to oogle a woman. I’ve always made characters that I perceive as “cool”. With Guid Wars 2, that’s a Human Ranger and a Sylvari Necromancer (they’re my mains).

I remember when it was pretty rare that guys would play as girls, now it seems to be the complete opposite lol. Oh well, I’m not here to judge, each to their own. It would be interesting to see what personalities the guys that make females vs the guys that make males are.

But back on topic, yeah I really would like more stuff for the guys to choose from. I like my character’s current apprael, but I’d like to change them up a bit, as a lot of the stuff I’m not really that fond of. New hairstyles would be great, new armour pieces that we can mix and match is always very welcome.

Some cool armour with some crazy designs would be pretty cool, maybe like some kind of spikey armour, or something with a demonic design on it etc. I know Arena Net work a lot on stuff, but it really feels like the males get the bad end of the stick, in comparison to the females, with regards to customization. Maybe I’m imagining it, but I really would like more male options.

Male characters wearing heavy armor have some “skimpy” options to make them fit a barbarian type of theme. In fact, I usually apply those skins on my heavy characters because playing Conan the Barbarian is fun. The term “sexism” gets thrown around a lot today when it shouldn’t.

As long as this discussion is about choices and options, I’m all for it.

The minute it turns into a discussion about needing to take things away from people, rather than providing mechanisms for everyone to get what they want (including, but not limited to, adding visual filters that work like chat filters, for anyone that just doesn’t want to look at it … even going so far as making it work like a ‘block’ feature, if someone is so caught up in whatever it is they are caught up in that makes them want to refuse to see me as I want to see me, but if they and their friends want to look like it, it’s OK), then I’m out.

And even with some sort of visual block filter, it’s not enough, and an affected party demands it be taken away from me, then I … just don’t even understand that, on any sort of human level, wanting to deny something to someone that has nothing to do with them. Me wanting to see my character as I want to see it has nothing to do with anything larger than just that: wanting to make my hero how I’d like to make my hero. It doesn’t mean anything else. It’s not a slippery slope. I didn’t draw a picture of Muhammad. It’s not a war on Christmas. Me wanting to see a little character on a screen the way I’d like doesn’t affect salaries, nor does it disprove that Jesus brought the Constitution down from Mt. Rushmore riding his raptor.

It’s just my character.

So yeah, choices and options for all, you bet!

Define “skimpy,” please. It wouldn’t look right seeing a male thief running around in a YMCA outfit, for example. The barbarian look for heavy armored males at least makes sense. The female options, though they can be revealing, at least fit the aesthetics of the game. Declaring something or someone to be sexist does not prove a point.

how come female thieves have revealing clothing options and male thieves do not? why would only the female one fit the aesthetics of the game?

Most of the rest are pretty much the same for both genders, which is a great thing, compared to many other MMOs around. But still it means that males have no revealing options for them.

Who the hell makes the males armor so big and ugly? You should move at 10% movement speed while wearing that. And don’t get me started with the light armor pieces…

I agree with what has been said here regarding male characters. For those interested, I highly recommend checking this thread out, as it focuses on human male hairstyles in general, but also touches on some subjects that could apply across all races. It’s actually been getting quite a bit of attention, and there are lots of good ideas there.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Suggestion-Human-Male-Hairstyles/first

Also…

Define “skimpy,” please.

I think most people are simply using the term “skimpy” to say that we want more armor sets that show skin for males. It doesn’t imply that they have to be running around in Lord Faren’s speedo (although I’m sure a lot of people would be thrilled to do that). Personally, I’d like some medium armor sets that are a bit more light without it being light armor, you know? Like an open vest and sandals.

I attached a pic for reference. Something like this could easily pass as medium armor to offer more variety outside of the massive amount of trench coats we currently have.

I feel your pain – all male characters here & while I think they did a great job with the sylvari racial sets (which most of my characters wear a combination of), I can’t help but feel I really struggle making my medium armor wearers look good. Hell I was actually forced to grind PvP which wouldn’t usually partake in, to get the medium glorious chest piece … which is incidentally, the only medium chest without some sort of skirt in the game… The. Would definitely welcome some armor designs which aren’t trenchcoats/ skirts

That’s exactly what I’m talking about. I’m not advocating leather thongs for males, but armor that show the bare chest? tight pants? sleveless shirts? That’s all I’m asking for. (Not that I wouldn’t like to be running around in Lord Faren’s speedo, but that’s another thing altogether XD)

In order to make the outfit suitable for a male character, you have to modify it. This is what I’ve been saying all along. Much like your sexist comment, declaring someone to be a “troll” doesn’t prove a point either.

That law was changed in referendum quite a while ago. =P

In all seriousness, if such a thing as natural law really existed for this stuff then by it’s very nature it would be constantly changing.

For reference, see pink being a boy’s colour until relatively recently. At some point, girls started wearing pink, and I’m sure some people said it was against the natural law at the time. =)

I like the male and female options actually. Although for have and faces, definitely, so far with every race and gender combination I’ve tried, the exclusives are way better than the default stuff.

That’s my male human btw … think I did an ok job. Was a pain getting light armor bottoms that actually look like regular pants though. Almost all the light armor bottoms for men look like skirts or dresses >_>

Guys guys. let this be a healthy discussion. I wish to have as many people as possible read this thread and share their opinions on this matter. I would also like someone from the Anet design department to read this thread because it has a lot of useful suggestions pertaining to the same issue.
Turning this into one of those “youtube-rage-infused-comment sections” would push back the main topic focused on here.
I main a thief and good lord, I really understand the pain you guys have been going through to select a good set of medium armor. Light armor for males is weird, specifically the leggings. I mean I dont understand why the leggings are a big problem though. Heavy leggings = underwear, Medium leggings are as you said. and Light leggings are almost always robes. I am condensing it because these are the things that people usually use because they have no “good” options. But yes, more commentary, less arguing please

Sexism is
prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, on the basis of sex.

Saying that men should only wear certain outfit is sexism. No matter how hard you try to deny it.

What is a YMCA outfit? Unless you mean the costumes Village People wore?
That would be stupid. Other than the cowboy, none of them fit the game theme at all.

A man wearing women’s clothing is actually contrary to natural law. Natural law doesn’t change to fit our disordered appetites.

Clothes themselves are contrary to natural law.

I don’t like that definition because it’s too broad. I’m not gay but apparently I’m “sexist” for not dating men. A better definition would be wanting to reinforce roles, like telling women they must stay in the kitchen or forcing them to wear burqas. I’m not sexist since I believe in equal rights.

I agree, thinking men should not wear revealing clothes but women can wear them is a sexist argument because it means you see women as eyecandy (partially or totally) and refuse for men to be seen that way because you think its ridiculous or degrading.
Back to the topic, i think most of us agree that male characters need more options. Thats all we are asking for.

I had to LOL at that. Where is this “natural law” from? I’d love to know. And what exactly does this “natural law” say?

Man not wearing skirts and the like is more due to social norm. And social norm can change. Just like women wear pants and bikinis now and no one bats an eye. Clothes are not inherently male/female anyway, they’re just a piece of cloth. Society just put labels on them.

Anyway, back to topic, I agree that male armors are a little bland in comparison to female. Same with the hair, I’d love to see some of the ridiculous hairstyles jrpgs have to offer, just to have a bit of a break from the mostly clear-cut ones we have.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE some more detail on the male clothes. Currently most (well all but one) of my characters are female. Not because of the most common reason some people give, but simply because the female armors are so much better. And i’m not just talking about the skimpy options, but all options.

When it comes to male armor i’d love for some formfitting armor (NO BUTTFLAPS) some armor that shows of some chest, or just some generally cool yet sexy looking armor for males.

PLEASE A NET, let me make a cool sexy male character.

note: sexy doess not mean skimpy, it can include skimpy, but sexy is more than just showing flesh.

I like this idea… I run roughly 50/50 on male vs female toons across several accounts. I try to follow the #three rule here… heavy medium light… male 3 times then female 3 times i might be off 1 or 2 toons depending on my mood some days, but I like both character sexes. Ive not developed stories yet for any of them save 1, my main, which is a large and in charge, black, male, norn.

But yes there is a severe lack of good looking male armor pieces. Most clip funny or are outlandishly disproportionate to the character.

Sexism or gender discrimination – prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex or gender.

but also remember that

Discrimination – treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing is perceived to belong to rather than on individual merit.

wheras orientation is a “pattern in preference”, not the avoidance of a merit based system due to ‘group’, as worded above (or even more generally). all the definitions discussed so far hold and are consistent

How about a REAL FLATOP hair cut for my male warrior please. Too many women making hair decisions for male toons in this game. Real men get hair done at a barber shop so please spend a day there to get an idea on how MALE (non-metro-sexual) hair is done correctly.

To the female attire designer’s, REAL MEN LIKE UNIFORMS type clothing styles. Think masculine details with functions, look at the clothing styles of Men in Uniform. There are only a few good looking male armors and styles out there.

Actually I cut my own hair with a clipper.

I get what you mean though.

This is a huge issue… I want to be able to run around in a G-string and beat people to death with a magic princess wand on a male character with semi normal looking hair. Why is that so hard to do?

And add some overweight body type skins too…

The two things I agree with:
- Hairstyles aren’t that good for human males, I like 3 of them and used 2 so far for my engi, while I used about 7 or 8 for my female human mesmer
- it’s the same with armor/looks: At least for medium male armor it’s really hard to find something that looks good. I was very satisfied with the first look of my human male character, every other style I tried after this was ok but felt more like a step backwards. That’s something I rarely feel when I change the clothes of my female characters
A side note: I have this experience mostly with the human race. My male Sylvari, Charr and Asura look perfectly fine, I swapped armors for them just as often as I did for my female characters. But when I look at the human race there is a ratio of maybe 7:3 for trying new looks. Of course the main reason might be that female light armor has way more variety than male medium armour.

… here are for example the “only” three human mid-armor looks that actually suited my character well (or at least I think they did oO)

This honestly is my single biggest gripe with this game. The human male hairstyles consist of what 2 or 3 long ones a few decent short ones and then the rest look something out of a boy band. They are terrible, I don’t see why humans and norn can’t at least share a few hairstyles, beards seeing how similar they are.

Then there is the armor….which I think is a problem for medium armor as a whole, with some cases in light and heavy, however I will focus on medium because it really is in the worst place. The heavy looking coats go decently with engineers because they don’t really fit the whole fast paced highly mobile adventurous themes of Rangers and Thieves, so for me it is more of an issue facing Thieves and Rangers. Over half of the medium armor is the farthest thing from mobile or practical for agile people. There are still coat types they could focus on that wouldn’t hinder mobility or look stupid. The pictures I attached are all armor styles that would fit perfectly with the Thief/Ranger class. The first picture still keeps the coat style that anet seems to be obsessed with but it’s in a much more practical way and in a similar style to what has been used thoroughly throughout the worlds history. The others go away from the coat style while keeping the very rugged adventure type look.

I decided to just not wear my chest armor in general and only put it when battling harder foes or doing pvp.
I prefer this look over the trenchcoats completely XD

I’m thinking about doing the same with my male Norn. While the Norn do have a few more options for skimpier male gear, it’s still limited. I gave him these awesome chest tattoos and want to show them off, kitten it!
