So, according to the preview, it would seem engineers may be near to getting out of beta phase, being able to attack the enemies they want and not having to rely on rng for heavily situational boons that are near useless otherwise. Well, and not having to trait a kit just for it to be useable.
Now we just lack a way to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome while using grenades to fully go gold. Like, dunno, having an autoattack like every other weapon in the game.

While we wait for such basic features, the other classes will continue to get buffed. But it is fine, it isn’t like we’re the least played class of the game.

I actually wouldn’t mind if Grenade Kit #1 just became a basic projectile auto attack with 1200-1500 range.

It would actually give us a long range option in some cases where you have a vertical advantage. For instance using a 1200 range projectile attack can hit targets further than a 1500 range ground target attack.

Or they could take a page from LoL and make Grenades act sort of like Zigg bombs, where they could bounce/roll a little bit after landing on the ground, unless they hit an enemy in which case would just detonate instantly.

Rangers are by no means in trouble and neither are their pets. In fact they are an absolutely incredible duo and very capable of GREAT support. The true problem here is that players don’t know how to build a ranger and are oblivious as to how powerful they can actually be as they get stuck into the meta garbage ideas of what a ranger is and completely neclect the vast amount of tools the ranger has at his/her disposal. My ranger/pet combo are nearly invincible and roll over mobs so easily. If you’d like a new paradigm for what a ranger can be feel free to pm me anytime and i’ll be happy to show you the epic dps/support capabilites of the ranger for Pve, PvP, and WvW. They are by no stretch of the imagination weak i can promise you this. Perhaps a leap outside of the box would do everyone a bit of good. Not everything you see on Youtube is the ONLY way ;D and in fact a lot of it is garbage. My main is Maya Sassin and i’m online most evenings.

The is also the VERY REAL possiblity that grenades aren’t the ONLY way to build an Engi but i doubt many would ever concider that…

I would love conjures to provide the wielder with stability for 10 seconds or something… This would at least make conjures appealing to use, in some sort of way, and provide Ele with another source of stability instead of Armor of Earth….

Eles already have other sources of stability.

I hope for a positive surprise tomorrow.
If the stuff in stream was all the biggest things we gonna see tomorrow, I’m very disappointed. I mean, it’s been almost 4 months since last balance patch. I was expecting way more.

They said in the live stream that they were just giving highlights and there are a lot more changes coming than were previewed. It’s going to be interesting reviewing all the tooltips to see how traits synergize now.

If they had any good news for rangers, it’s unlikely they would have left them for the patch notes. And since the ranger community will have now until december to hope something gets done finally (which even then is highly unlikely), i expect lot of people to drop off the game. Or roll warriors.

To be completely honest, when it comes to Ranger community itself, vast majority of those active on the forums have already rolled 2 or 3 additional characters for the content Rangers are less than ideal for. The contents of this patch will probably not affect those who still main Rangers that much. But if the contents are bad, those who already moved to other classes will only be reaffirmed in their choices again.

Personally, I didn’t like the preview not because how Ranger was hardly talked about (again). I didn’t like it because it looked like there was little to no effort put into it. It lacked any time management. Sometimes I was of an impression the guys doing the stream weren’t really exactly sure what they want to talk about, and what they don’t. I appreciate the fact that Anet is finally starting to consider communication with the community an existing issue. But there is still a long way ahead of them.

And when you’re a dev dealing with balancing the classes, then for the love of all the gods, spirits and all the other possible transcendent beings, at least try to avoid showing that you have no idea whatsoever where in the trait lines that certain trait you want to talk about is located. It simply doesn’t make you, and your entire team, look good.

Edit: To point another thing out: Completely remove the Autododge form Pistolwhip.

No.
S/P is the only completely balanced yet effective setup we have and very few players use it.
This change would nerf it to the ground. Pistol Whip has a really telegrapbed animation. If you miss the first hit, you are going to be rooted in place, ready to be burst down. It’s high initiative cost (5!) is already a high price for not landing the first hit.

no indeed, autododge on my thief and ranger are just fine, you just have to time your abilities better in pvp wvw. PVE shouldn’t suffer because you guys don’t want to learn every class to be more effective against them.

Watched it as well and what I found most disturbing was all of the time spent on Ele and Warriors like the other classes A: didn’t have more pressing problems that have needed to be fixed since launch and B: don’t deserve the same amount of care that these two favored classes have had since beta.

Seriously I would hope that in the interest of fairness that next patch they focus mainly on Engineer and Ranger the most. Then the next patch they focus on Thief and Mesmer the most etc so that it’s a balanced approach to them all.

Yeah we lost AoE early on, now we are losing even more AoE damage with the new rules. RTL recharge increased from 16 sec to 40, mist form now prevent heal and condition removal, our healing was nerfed (now it seems they are realizing this was a huge mistake)… I mean the Ele got the nerf hard. Our class has been literally destroyed over the course of the year. Apparently they want to put it back together with a cheap version of Guard’s line of warding… Meanwhile they give the thief immobilize duration stacks.

And I have a lv 80 thief, but this is just stupid. A thief already destroy players in 1 vs 1. Now they can have them stunned and stuck in one place for 6-7 seconds once their stunbreakers are used. News for you Anet: it only take 3 seconds for a good Thief to destroy an ele, 5-6 seconds if they use mist form an try to jump off a cliff.

I think there is nothing wrong with this.
RTL was really a little to good, and mistform was the only skill that makes you full invulnerable while you can use skills or stomp another people. No other class could do this.
And I’m sure the healing nerf, was a result to the bunkerbuilds.

Dude lets say we take your 3 skill on your toolbar and decide it’s going to take 8 initiative instead of 3. This is how bad the RTL nerf was in %. As for healing, they’ve punished everyone for a bunker build only a few played, forcing us to trait even more into water.

Mistform-healing was a class mechanic. They broke that mechanic we were all used to.
For weeks I was still bashing the keys by habit as nothing happened.
It would be the equivalent of making your backstab not work for 3 seconds after stealing. It would break all your builds that use steal at 1200 range to backstab (and stealth on steal).

I could say it was overpowered in the first place and didn’t go with the thief philosophy, but you would still lose a mechanic you loved if that was what you played for 5 months.

They clearly don’t play the game and have no idea what support in this game has turned into (it’s a shame though but it’s a reality)

Knowing that they would’ve never prioritize shouts cooldown over a plain constant 150 power to all your party. (or course min/maxers will do the math and let us know if the upkeep time / renewal of the 3 mights and fury of FGJ is now better than the 150 power all the time).

ANet, support in your game is not what you think it would be. Support is just stacking mights and invuls. That’s it. Fix your game and we will use more support, we already know and have the tools don’t move them around; is where we are applying those tools that needs a fix! Improve your content and AI and stop messing our traits. Thanks!

They just used standard Anet balance procedures. Pretty much every patch since launch can be summed up as:

Buff warriors through the roof
Buff gaurds slightly
Nerf rangers and ele’s to dust
Nerf thieves
Minor changes to necro, engineer, and mesmer

If a suggestion doesn’t follow this template then it is just ignored. You can look over every balance patch since launch and they will ALL follow this OVERALL pattern.

Class balance:

Ranger
Sick ‘Em will now apply ‘Revealed” to enemies they target. We want to introduce some counter play to Stealth (players have asked for that for a while), so we thought a pet “catching your scent” might be a cool way to insinuate some anti-stealth into the game.

To help Rangers support allies, we increased the ability ranger pets have to support allies. For instance, the Bear condition removal isn’t strong enough, so we’ll be improving that. Moas and Fern Hound will also be improved.

There will also be # changes to some of the Ranger weapons. (this one some nice lie)

After the patch, nothing changes.

Sure, new support builds needs to be tested.
Sure, stuns are less effective.
Sure, there are a couple of new things on the table that we’ll need to see in action.

Overall?
Still condition and stun spam.
Still unbalance in the treatment of some classes over other 6.
Still very disconnected about their game – and this isn’t balance wise only.

Did you miss where it says (in bold) that some of it may not make it for release? They did not lie to you, kitten just did not work out as originally planned.

This is no different than you telling your child they can do ‘x’ after you get home from doing errands, but due to unforeseen circumstances those errands take all day and by the time you get home, it’s basically bedtime. You did not lie to your child. You had the valid intent of letting them do ‘x’ when they got home; however life happened and now they can’t do ‘x’ because there is no time.

The trait information revamp, condition damage display and new ground targeting setup probably took up most of the resources devoted to the balance part of this patch.

While all that is welcome, the changes are… really underwhelming. At least for me. I dont see anything worth rolling an alt over or trying something new on my main, nevermind affecting the meta in any area of the game.

Well the optimist in me wants to say that this thread is for future changes beyond this patch.

They really should be kicking out balance patches every 2 weeks IMO. Classes are the CORE of your game, they affect EVERYTHING in game, it should be top priority IMO.

It is incredibly disturbing to see things like on the livestream such as :

“We don’t know what to do with Mesmer Sceptre.”

So instead of changing/reworking/bandaid-fixing/anything the garbage Auto, you decide to buff the 2 good skills it has that don’t need any buffs? This sort of thing just absolutely blows my friggin mind. I just paused the video, and sat there staring in absolute awe.

With the small size of this balance/skill update I’m just going to assume they’ve got like two guys working on skill and trait balance.

Assume? They have. They literally have 2 guys working on balance.

Surely you jest?

For those who play mesmer; I was really hoping for more. Everything for mesmer was purely bug fixing except for the AoE stability and condition removal which will probably never see the light of day; mantra’s are still too clunky to be effective. The very minor reduction in cooldown for the scepter is noted. I for one do not see it as a big benefit there, but I would like feedback from others. Ultimately I consider Mesmer the most underwhelmingly buffed class this update. Anyone else for least buffed candidate? Rather curious.

many months wait for this balance patch……wow. consider me underwhelmed and not optimistic for the future. hope time proves me wrong.

best to just ignore these “updates” and just play (unless you are a warrior….then every update is like christmas).

the devs hate mesmer and are trying to make sure that we are weakest and least played class in wvw. stupid mantras with a tiny radius like that is a complete joke. i dont care about the spvp 1v1 mesmer as i play wvw only, but anet really seems to hate us. they ever just shaved our class, no they went and destroyed most of our zerg builds.
glamour was not just shaved like a stunlock warrior, no, we got nerfed to the ground of the ground.

does anet honetly think its fun to be a stupid veilbot? and a stupid weak tw bot with no access to aoe eventhough being a light armor class? do u think a 13k backstab followed by 9 k heartseeker is fun? do u think its fun to be perma immobilized and perma stunned with barely any access to stabilty?
they couldnt even give us the hp increase of clones or phantasms in wvw where we desperately needed it. how about a buff for us in wvw? we need it, but our spvp mesmer prevents us from getting anything. gg anet.

So it’s safe to say ANet didn’t read this thread I guess?

They are too busy writing the posts for the “Community collaboration” marketing event to actually engage in any form of community communication, i guess.

This is the balance patch we waited for … for months? THIS? this is it? do you have like 2 people working on balance changes?

This is my biggest issue with this whole thing. It just seems underwhelming in scale for a “massive balance/skill update”.

Yes.

This also disturbs me. It was considered a rumor months ago when we first heard about it but now I think it’s a reality I don’t think they have enough people allocated to this task and I definitely don’t think they have anyone playing the other classes so we see imbalance in PVE constantly that’s never fixed.

they need advocates for ranger, engineer, ele, condition damage builds, and pet builds because those are the least balanced classes and the least used builds right now in PVE.
