when this things come out any chances will work with GW2?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus_Rift

Dont know much about them or even if they work with PC, but I find them amazing, specialy when I’m all about immersing myself in the world I’m playing and be in the “zone”. I mean if the game will work as it is, coz I dont expect ANet spending millions to make something for like 0.0001% of GW2 population who might use it

Hey Spritus!

The Rift is being developed on PC and by PC gamers, so yes, it’ll work on PC! The quesiton there is if it’ll work on peasant boxes (consoles).

There are a number of third party drivers being developed which will allow the Rift to work with games even where the developer hasn’t coded any support in. These third party drivers don’t work with all games, but there’s a good chance someone will make it work with GW2.

So far I’ve only seen FPS games adapted for use with the Rift, but there’s every chance an MMO/RTS could work if you’re content with not seeing form the character’s POV.

If you want to discuss more things, head over to reddit.com/r/oculus.

Spiritus, they’ll be considering it.

Seriously, it’s an unproven technology and they’d need to rework their game engine to get it to function, and then deal with all the attendant issues from that around field of view and other things (they’re very reluctant to change FoV in this game, they feel it changes balance in PvP).

So you won’t get a yes/no, they’ll be keeping an eye on it, but won’t commit to it until it’s gained some traction with consumers.

You’re just gonna have to wait. In the meantime though, I can’t recomend the oculus subform of reddit enough if you’re interested.

It’s weird for Anet to be reluctant about a product whose developer kit was so bought out that there’s a waiting line lasting weeks for them, especially when such companies like Valve already stated that they’re backtracking and making ALL of their games compatible (even games as old as Half Life 1).

GW2 should only use it if it can use it for a good reason. Yeah, OR seems cool, but I doubt it will really be good for every single game, atleast in terms of adding it to already made games. If they can, then sure, go for it, but I think people get carried away with wanting every game to have it.

Well some people are actually resizing their desktops so that they could use even such programs as microsoft word with it. Simply because this way you can use a higher resolution screen that lenses over your eye and strains it less for less than what most high resolution screens cost.

And yet over 70% of movie sales are still DVD and virtually all personal data storage are either USB sticks or external hard drives. Most new PCs don’t have more than a DVD drive. We all know what technology I’m talking about, which hasn’t been accepted by the majority, not even after almost 7 years. In an average production plant you’ll be more likely to find 5¼" floppy disks than the next big thing.

I don’t jump on the “next big thing” bandwagon until it has clearly taken off. To I’ll be more than happy to update to a proven, stable and supported technology that’s reasonably priced once they prove an advantage over a triple monitor set-up.

EDIT: to clarify… I’m very much interested if it’s stable, affordable and widely supported. However, merely calling it the next big thing won’t convince me.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

Well even sites like youtube promised support for it
Other than that you can use it as a regular screen with no support and feel like it’s an upgrade, because it’s cheaper than a real screen with such resolution.
For me it’s really good for health reasons. I get dizzy with lots of games due to eyes that get strained if FOV seems unnatural. Base Oculus FOV is 120. Indie game developers picked up Oculus developer kits, Crytek and Valve promissed full support for it, EA is developing Battlefield 4 with support for it, which means that I finaly will be able to once again play FPS without getting FOV changers and strain my eyes less due to a curved lens instead of a flat screen ^^

I just read the oculus rift website again, and it still looks like it could take a while. I really hope they can manage universal game support through implementation in Nvidia/ATi drivers. If not, they’ll have to do a lot of lobbying before it becomes viable, at any price.

Well Oculus is not releasing for at least over half a year. The ones being sold now are developer kits. With companies coming out and saying what they’re doing (Valve, Crytek, some indie ones) it will launch with support for at least 300 games. I do agree, but because I own a bit too much games on steam I feel that even if not every single one got support it’s an upgrade good enough for me to warrant buying it

Altho i think it will be great in a lot of games that use a controller or even some games that use a keyboard but i think its gonna be hard to get used to in a mmo as im not sure how easy its gonna be to type when you cant see the keyboard.

i guess we will see…

GW2 won’t get OR support until GW2 adds first person view, which is basically never. Orbiting third person cameras the likes of which are used in most third person games with camera controls just don’t mesh well with the OR. The only way I can see it happening is if they just allowed the camera to roll, pitch, and yaw akittens present orbit location independently of its location relative to your character, but then you’d feel like a floating camera, not a person.

it dosnt need a FPV there are already a few 3rd PV games that can use the Rift, it just feels that your now falloing your avatar around.it will need an intirly new UI that is also pulled more to the center of the screen as the biggst problem with most Rift ports is that the UIs are not built with VR in mind.

thats even more of a problem in text heavy games

<Violins and pianos play a maudlin tune as I begin to remember the old days fondly>
Way back in that far away time of 1998 I took the chance to try a VR headset on my pc. The headset was incredibly heavy and gave me such a sore neck. The display was possibly 800×600 at best and the list of compatible games was very low and the game I played was Descent. Of course we are talking MSDOS games and there was tweaking of the programming needed.

What a pain but what a great experience when playing it. Descent was a tunnel based flying fps game and there were enemies all around me. It was amazing to be able to lift my head to see what was above me, turn left and right to see what was flying past me or into me and look down below me all the time blasting away. The sessions didn’t last long unfortunately because the headset was far too heavy.

I would like to think that the Occulus Rift headset is light and very easy to wear but the technology has come a long way and if it was brilliant in 1998 it should be amazing now.

I use forums to give my opinions but I mostly avoid discussing over
them due to those less than polite individuals out there and their offensive attitude.

Here’s the thing though, even if it gets ANet’s support, and you can move the free-floating camera around like your head, you’ll never see it in tpvp. A group of people who have to control the camera with their mouse vs people with neck control might be about as fair as sticking controllers vs mouse/keyboards in FPS’s.

Of course, the alternative is incorporating it, then anyone who’s “very serious” about pvp will be using one, and that’s one more degree of separation between the “pros” and the casuals.

It could be disruptive to WvW too. If you can zoom your camera the whole way out, position it above you, and then “look up” with your OR, you might be able to see over keep walls, and we know ANet’s (justifiably) not cool with that.

As for PvE, yeah, OR support would be sweet.

The speaker in the video mentions that no first person view and not being able to adjust the in game user interface are limiting this device for only working in Guild Wars 1 currently.

While VR is really something you must experience at least once, the over the shoulder 3rd person that most MMOs use can be very disorienting since not only where you are looking moves, the camera moves as well. If people feel a little queesy in 1st person just imagine being at the end of a boom being swung around merely by turning your head. Not an enjoyable experience since your eyes aren’t sinking with what your inner ear is sensing.

So ANet, any info for us? Yes?, No? and no PR bs like “we consider it”))

Well thats one of the problems of this thing. 1920×1080 might seem nice but it’s right up you face and even blown up a little. I have used the first and the second version but vision is blurry on both (those have lower resolutions). The 3th version (not available yet) has a higher resolution but you can wonder if thats still enough. Maybe you are going to need 5k for this to be a good resolution.

However high frame-rate (to overcome all problems I did read somewhere that 1000 FPS @ 1000Hz would be optimal.. but lets for now keep it at 120 FPS @ 120 Hz), a low latency and no input lag are also very important. Else people will get sick of it very soon.

Also the movement of your head should be correct with the movement of the screen (something the 3th party drivers tent to get wrong).

So while virtual reality (there are more options then just the OR) is very interesting, be aware that there are still many problems to overcome before you would get a really good experience.

However Anet should try to look into that already. A problem I see game-wise is that it only makes sense in first person.

I’m skeptical about the Rift for my use. I am quite nearsighted and haven’t worn contacts for years, so I have rather thick glasses. Hooray for technology, they aren’t bottle-thick, but they do stick out on each side of the lens frame. Peripheral vision is somewhat limited for me as a result.

Also, I can’t even deal with the most “comfortable” headsets. They pinch my ears over my glasses earpieces and in a few minutes I am in great pain. Earbuds are hideous for me as well, I loathe jamming anything in my ears.

So while millions of people can get along with these things just fine, I have to hope that no MMO I want to play ever goes fully into must-have-headset design.

I develop software for the rift at work for construction visualization purposes and independantly for a little game I’m working on.

What you have to understand is that you can’t simply ‘click button add support’ for the thing, which is precisely why a lot of the injection based drivers are so finicky.

A VR headset is not a 3d TV, and in order to get a good exprience out of VR you have to design a lot of your experience around it. First person stuff tends to work best, but third person is managable, however it requires a lot of work to design a control scheme that puts your head tracking in a natural position for the user, position UI elements so they’re useful but not intrusive, etc. In addition your controls need mapped to be a lot leaner than most MMOs allow, as you can’t see your control device when using it.

In addition your world has to be generally designed around it. Rapid and unexpected camera movements cause motion sickness in most people when using a rift, and ccertain techniques commonly used for things like skyboxes and LODs can be visually problematic, while the overall performance of the application had to be pared down so that your game runs at 70+ FPS at all times with a roughly +60% perfomence overhead due to head tracking and double rendering interpretation.

Essentially, no, I wouldn’t expect any official GW2 support, it would require a massive overhaul of the UI and camera control systems to work in a comfortable and polished manner. You might be able to play it with some third party injection drivers, but for it to actually be in any way fun to play, your injection driver would have to modify a lot of the UI so you could see basic stuff like UI text, boons, etc. as 3d panels rather than 2d overlays as the 2d overlay techniques used in most games do not work in VR (they sit at the periphery of your vision where they are unreadable, and they do not respect world depth which causes incongruent depth perception of the UI)

For that kind of modification, you’d be crossing over in to bannable third party software territory.
