Before you post in this thread, I’d appreciate if you read this original topic and continue past just the title. Thank you.

Okay, one time events. This has split the community between those “with lives” outside the game and those that can participate. If the event is something like that of the opening cinematic from the Mad King, many really don’t care at all about it. But if it’s something with a tangible in-game reward, those that have other obligations are furied by it.

This brings up the “all-or-none mentality” that everyone should get something presented in-game on an even ground, or it shouldn’t be present at all. This isn’t exclusive to one-time events, as seen on The Clocktower in how many who just couldn’t complete the jumping puzzle tried to make every excuse or suggestion to A.Net so that it be changed for everyone.

That all-or-none mentality is not a selfless way for people to try to get others to participate, but really a ploy for themselves to get something that they are blocked from obtaining. All in all, this is a selfish attitude.

An experience from other MMO’s tells me that not everyone is going to be able to obtain everything in the game at all. It’s impossible, improbable, and it’s like chasing your tail (if you have one).

To pull away from the topic of rewards for just a bit, I’d like to instead point towards the actual reasoning of this game: To have Fun. Developer Colin Johnson says it best… http://www.arena.net/blog/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success

More than just having fun, being in an ever changing living game world, it’s the experiences that drive great memories. Visiting Southsun Cove I can point out the rockslide we caused to stop the Ancient Karka, the steam vents we busted open, and finally his body ever encased in a volcanic rock grave on the edge of a lava pit. These aren’t just landmarks; they are things that us players caused and participated in.

Some likes those memories and joy them so very much; some just care for the ‘pot of gold’ at the end of the rainbow. Yet if either or both of these groups miss an event that has each entwined together, it’s considered to them to be unfair. And now we hit the topic title basic: Life—-is—-not—-fair. I’m sorry to say, but missing an in-game event is not the end of the world and shouldn’t have special exceptions or changes just because some are going to miss it. Whether you can’t buy Super Bowl/PAX tickets because they’re sold out, or you missed the great New Year’s Eve party because you had to work a double shift, no exceptions or changes are going to be made for accommodation.

I’d like to end this post with a Thank You directed towards A.Net for making a great game with enjoyable, memorable moments. Please, keep them coming.

We all care about the game, or we wouldn’t be here, but I think you’re missing several important points (though I respect the intent).

1) Life isn’t fair, but videogames aren’t life. People control videogames, and the decisions regarding them.

2) Not being able to get things is fine. I will almost certainly never get a legendary. I almost didn’t get the Mad King’s Tower, but I spent a few days practicing on it. However, there is a difference between not being able to get something because you lack the skill, or the patience, or even the luck at RNG, and not getting something because you were denied the chance.

3) This isn’t pointless complaining. People aren’t just whingeing because they’re childish. They are expressing concerns on the official forums in the hope that ANet, who clearly DO care about their fanbase, will here them and modify their actions accordingly.

4) This wasn’t just a little deal with the chest. We aren’t talking about an exotic, or a unique skin. We’re talking about a lot of gold. Like the equivalent of hundreds of dollars in some cases. Being denied the opportunity to get that because of your timezone, or your job, or whatever else, is pretty harsh. This is made even worse because those rich people have a massive effect on the game economy, both on the Black Lion and the gem prices. It isn’t just that people have something others don’t, it now makes it harder to buy things because the prices of certain things will go up (gems and high level materials).

I appreciate that ANet are trying to fix this, and I still love the game, but I don’t think people are complaining without good reason.

I wonder if the OP realizes that some people who live on the other side of the world were asleep during the only opportunity to participate in this event.

OP if the event happened at 3am your local time, and you had work that same day starting at 8am, would you still attend the event?

Hey but life’s not fair. He only missed out on a potential 300 gold (assuming he got just 1 chest).

Everybody who’s anybody knows that 300 gold in GW2 is basically nothing, and can easily be achieved by any player leveling from 1-80 once without repeating any content.

Fun; several hours of fighting and numerous rezzings of others to be cheated of a fair reward by the Developers!?

Some received vast riches.
Some a handsome reward.
Some were cheated of a fair reward and far to many saw nothing for their efforts.

That is not funny.

Um with all due respect I think you may have missed the fact that Anet promptly addressed the issue of those that due to event issues did not get a chest would get one. The reward chest was sent out to affected players by Anet Support yesterday.

As far as timing of one time events I think weekends are usually best and if possible in the future a 24hr 1 time event might make more sense so that people in various timezones can all enjoy a shot at it. Exact structuring of 1 time event timing is up for debate on the “best” way to handle it but I think Anet did a good job of addressing the immediate concern regarding those who participated but were impacted by “issues beyond their control” as it were due to the popularity of the event.

The one fact that you have completely missed in your deliberations is that you’re not thinking globally.

Presumably, Noon PST on a weekend is a time that allows you to participate in these types of events – I presume this because you did not mention otherwise in your post.

You paid the same amount of money for the game than everyone else did (differences between versions notwithstanding as that was your choice at time of purchase).

By holding one-time events (at ANY time of day), a portion of the paying customers will be unable to attend. So far, as paying customers, we have only seen one time slot for these one-time events, and it has excluded a significant portion of the paying client base simply due to the time zone in which they live – and it has been the same group that has consistently missed out.

Loot (grossly unbalancing or not) and chests aside – those paying clients missed out on content, things to see and do, and by holding these one-time events at the same time all the time, it leads to some people rightly getting upset that they’re not being treated as fairly as others, despite paying the same fees to ArenaNet for the pleasure of playing the game.

Surely you can see how this is unfair, and simply creates a rift in the community?

I think the problem is the reward is very very overwhelming, like some people made 400 gold plus from opening 2to 3 karma chests.

of course it’s not fair, but here’s the thing

player miss one-time event, anet keeps insisting on one-time event, (most) players rage, (most players) quit, anet lose money
you attended one-time event, anet keeps insisting on one-time event, you’re happy, anet might or might not gain money from you

why would anet listen to only you and not (most) players ?
the same reason you answer this question would be applicable to the people who complains

and anyway, your analogy is way off. do I have to elaborate?

Life is not fair has nothing to do with a video game as a video game has nothing to with real life other than the wasting of it timewise, though a large demographic do live in MMO’s, but that is another subject.

The op made their point now i will counter. One time events are things that are supposed to be spectacular in both execution and scope, neither of which Anet has accomplished. Current score for delivery of events if i am accurate is 1 for 3 so far, anet stating moving forward they need to tighten their shot group, which everyone agrees with obviously due to the feedback of the survey and Anets admission.

That aside the OP made a great point, missing a game event is not or should not be the end of the world, in real life, though again with some folks that live in these games it is if they miss it.

The solution? Drumroll…………the only solution is the one chosen by the developers of the game, nothing more.

Could they make the event, any event, all day, repeating constantly for X number of days, sure they could, but they could also make the event a suprise, no one knows about it until “pop” it happens randomly and be world changing, give out great buttstomping loot and people would go ballistic.

Which way is best? the one in which every one gets the loot or the one where Joebob and luke were trapsing through the jungle and each got 7 precursors for doing nothing more than tripping the great behemoth and having it fall on its own sword…………what group of people then have the right to cry and shake their fists in fury that they did not get something? Think about it.

Sure, i got disconnected a ton to the point i simply quit this last event, very disgusted at the execution and management of the event, but i also understand what one time only means….the devs can save alot of facetime by making some simple rules or even more simple announcements on what type of event will take place and that not everyone will get something, however, that should never be a crutch for the devs to lean on.

In the end the devs will do what they want, how they want to do it. Though how they communicate their intent is how the community will react when it finally does happen.

There is no worse feeling than that during an argument, you realize you are wrong.

Life isn’t fair BUT games are supposed to be fair. That’s why there are rules, so nobody cheats or gets an unfair advantage. Spare me your cliches and high horse attitude.

I do believe Mike Obrian said somewhere , I am sure someone will find the exact quote,

that no player will every be discriminated because of where they live in this game and all players have the same equal right to play the game as it is designed.

or something very close to those words. Well the One time event failed in the Bosses on words by totally discriminating against players with certain areas , and this is what we are all so very very upset about. Not only they did this ,knowing in advance, right after the games release but they CHOOSE to ignore it , then to completely rub it in they reward a select group hundreds of dollars of in game content, including themselves as alot of devs posted they played this event, and have basically told us in the affected regions tuff. That is not good enough for a paying customer who has loved and supported their game for up too 7 years.

if you played Guild wars you would know that all events ran for 4 days or over 2 weeks with every player having the opportunity to get the rewards from these events .
Now they want to change events to a 1 time event that punishes half the player base. this is not only a major discrimination on their behalf but from their company’s own boss not what has ever been intended to be part of the game.

If the event hadn’t made a significant number of random people 300 Gold richer nobody would have complained. If it had been a normal event chest + Karka Shell + Box…..that would have been ok.

But giving out Precursors like candy is what really spilled things over the top. I too would be pretty annoying if I had missed out on a chance to gain 300 Gold.

eh.. I don’t think I can agree with that. We live in a world where entitled, spoiled people who are used to getting everything their way. They are in fact starting to think that they are entitled to other people’s work for free & that gifts are a “right”. it’s pretty scary really.

Life isn’t fair BUT games are supposed to be fair. That’s why there are rules, so nobody cheats or gets an unfair advantage. Spare me your cliches and high horse attitude.

Is that why so many players want to be able to gank other in PvP & make the unfair advantage of gear more important? Spare me the “fairness” joke. People only want “fairness” when they didn’t get the prize. Players are just as greedy as they pretend Anet is.
