Only 3 Traits after HoT release?
You are not being forced to use the new Elite Specialization – they are not superior, simply new.
And yes, you are correct that you will only be able to equip 3 Specialization lines at any time (at least until Anet change something). Although I doubt any change will come to that any time soon, at least until we have a larger selection of Specializations to choose from.
3 trait lines is going to be the number even after HoT releases and elite specs come about, yes. Elite specs aren’t meant to be “better”. They’re simply mean to be different.
Yes, on release there will absolutely be a massive rush for everyone to use the new stuff. But after the initial hype wears off, some will decide the elite traitlines aren’t for them for whatever reason (either because they don’t like the new playstyle, or would simply prefer to use a specific build made up of old traitlines) and go back to the core specs. Heck, I’ve already seen plenty of people state they aren’t going to bother with elite specs for the long haul and that they’d rather stick with 3x core spec lines.
its no different whether we are allowed to equip 3 or 4 traitline, players will still equip elite anyway if it is better. 3 traitline means trade off, the core speciality always got something you wants to keep and that makes the deal about trade.
“Elite” was probably a poor word choice on ANet’s part. There’s nothing ‘better’ about the new trait line, except that it allows use of a new weapon. It’s more of an ‘extra’ or ‘bonus’ trait line rather than an ‘elite’ one.

Elite Specialization sounds better than Extra Specialization or Bonus Specialization or Alternate Specialization.
You can use 3 out of 5 base line specializations or 2 out of 5 with 1 elite specialization.
Neat thing is either way there are 10 combinations available either way.

My guess is they chose “Elite Specialization” to echo the “Elite skills” of GW1—in the sense that you could have only one of the possible Elite skills in your build at a time, just like with Elite Specs. But yeah, it does sort of suggest that the Elite spec line is going to be stronger than the core ones, which leads to posts like the OP.

If you played the beta weekends or just even looked at how traits are done right now, it will basically stay only 3 lines and you can only pick 1 elite specialization as it can only be changed on the 3rd line.
