Disclaimer – Just to make things clear Orr is annoying, not hard. Please understand this difference as it is generally synonymous with those who dislike the zone.

Nothing has ever ruined my gaming experience in a game like Orr has. The ramp up from Straits of Devastation to Malchors Leap to finally reaching Cursed Shore has highlighted a lot of things I dislike about the game and then some.

We get the point that Orr is a cursed land of the Risen, sure, sure….driving home a narrative is one thing but drowning players in undead quite literally everywhere that respawn very quickly is beyond reason.

Oh and it doesn’t stop there either: “EVERYONE, COME!”. Not only do they cover every inch of the map, occupie 90% of all way points and respawn quickly; they have every, EVERY skill in the game to make travelling from point A to B as monotonous and painful as possible. They can:

  • - freeze you
  • - cripple you
  • - immobilize you
  • - pull you back to them
  • - daze you
  • - stun you
  • - knock you down

AND THEY’RE ALWAYS IN GROUPS!!! Playing in Orr at times is comparative to being suffocated. It is tiresome and unenjoyable. When people complained before I got there I thought they were signet warrior newbies just complaining about things they could complain about. But woe is me. This place doesn’t define annoying, it reinvented it.

“EVERYONE, COME!”

Something Orr really drove home is how LOCK-ON ranged skills should not be in a combat system where the whole point is to avoid attacks, but the attacks are unavoidable?? Instant crowd control skills that can’t be anticipated??

I realized I wasn’t anticipating and dodging like I do in Tera, but I was running around in circles and kiting. I am a burly Norn warrior with a big 2h sword/hammer, but my primary way of dealing with the majority of mobs is to take out a longbow and kite them like I’m legolas. WHAT THE ^&%$ “EVERYONE, COME!”

AAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

At the end of the day, I realized the most fun I had, was not the combat, not the dungeons (definitely not the dungeons) but anything, ANYTHING not to do with attacking something “EVERYONE, COME!” i.e. exploring, vistas and jumping puzzles. This is the first game where I’ve become a vegetable. What the hell is going on? I believe red is dead and teabagging my foe because I’m the alpha you don’t mess with and now I’m trying to avoid combat at all costs.

I don’t have a problem with grinding, believe me I got a full gold abyss set including jewels from Aion, I mean business. So when I’m avoiding mobs instead of killing them without second thought, woe is me something is wrong.

“EVERYONE, COME!’

I see no point to Orr at all aside from the Ori and sapling nodes. I get more karma and gold doing WvW objectives than farming Orr DE’s and getting hit with a zerg that’s invisible until its 3 inches from your nose is faaaaaarrrrrr less annoying than that stupid pull move the sea zombies use.

I thought Orr was kind of neat, and haven’t really had a survivability problem… but I do have to say that the non-damaging conditions (especially movement imparing ones) REALLY get on my nerves if I spend too much time there. I can only handle about 30 minutes of non-group karma farming at a shot or I start to hate the game lol

Orr is a nightmare to get from A to B, it is awesome if you are a bot though because you don’t really have to move to find mobs, they cover every square inch of the zone.

It is not too bad doing stuff in a group, even just one other person makes a world of difference. If I am on my own I prefer Frostgorge to amuse myself.

At one point, I stopped attacking them and tried free running, then I found out land mobs also had the pullbacks. I avoided the water like a cat, if you got stunned in there you would sink to the bottom making it take 5 years longer to get to any place if you managed to get there at all.

It was a really weird feeling, everyone other zone I had come to really enjoy; Caeldon Forest being one of my favourites mainly due to Spekk’s Lab! Another thing I noticed that made Orr very different was there were no hearts.

Hearts actually accomplished something very important, it gave you short term objectives to go from A to B, and on the way there dynamic events would take you from the well trodden path meaning every time you tried A to B it could be different.

Another thing though is that they acted like check points, some hearts are very neutral and safe to stay at. There were no safe areas in Orr to just afk while you do something else, even checking the map was hazardous.

Impossible! There is no where in the game better to farm karma than plinx event. WvW isn’t even close the time it takes you to get SM castle I have ran gotten the same amount of karma in like 20 minutes. You have to farming the wrong place for sure.

As to the point about ORR. It can be annoying but if your there enough you can tell the aggro range. The guys that throw the hooks and pull you are annoying but as soon as they have aggrro just dodge and they miss and you keep going. Is orr the hardest zone to travel yes but every other place in the game is pretty easy to get around at 80 fireheart is really the only other tough place and thats not even that bad.

As a warrior you shouldn’t have any major trouble travellling through Orr, you have speed skills and weapons for runing, like sword, horn, etc.
In Orr you shouldn’t be fighting every mob you see, but only those that you must to accomplish either an escort event, rescue mission, or clearing the resource location.
Orr is designed to be dangerous and annoying and therefore it gives highest karma, gold, resources, armor, etc.

You have to loose some blood in the process for that.

In Orr you become a war veteran, that’s how they designed it.

Guild wars should be war between orders, because orders are guilds too.

I never said I had a problem doing it. I stated that I did it and did not have fun doing it. Just like bosses in dungeons with 1 shot skills, it doesn’t make them harder or challenging, it makes it annoying and boring.

What would have made Orr a Veteran place is having places leading up to major things like Vistas and PoI’s be a challenge and not just litter the entire map with annoying mobs.

Most skill challenges aren’t even challenges either, you clear the mobs and hope you don’t get randomly stunned on your way to touch the thing. Those stuns last 6 seconds and can overlap before it’s even over. So challenging right.

Exploring is a pain in the kitten there is a lot of running around involved which means if you want to stop and plan a route to analyse to find things you’re going to have to clear the area. Stopping just to look at you map becomes annoying.

There is nothing hard or epic about Orr. It is boring and annoying.

The mad clock tower was hard and epic. The waiting was annoying, see the difference yet?

100% agree with the OP. Sadly this thread will be deleted soon as others previously have as it won’t be deemed constructive because we’re complaining about Orr.

So in the spirit of being constructive and understanding that Orr is a warzone:

- Mobs are slightly too densely populated and can respawn extremely quckly. Thinning down slightly would be good.

- Mobs and catapults have some extremely annoying mechanics so you lose control of your char for too long. Increasing the cooldowns some mobs can use these abilities again would be good.

- Navigating around Orr is a tad confusing at time. You get used to it but a slightly clearer path would be useful.

- Many waypoints are often contested which means having to run through the mess described above to get anywhere which will either lead to your own death and frustration OR lead to the death of players you run past as your mob train following you then takes an interest in them. Due to the near constant contested nature of the waypoints this means you may end up resurrecting the other side of the map and have to run through it again. This isn’t entertainment!

- Compare Orr to Harathi Hinterlands. Harathi is a warzone but is very entertaining, players are led on a long battle to finally kill a big boss man. The area is clearly laid out and players can navigate around solo to get to places without being beaten over the head by excessive mobs and cc abilities. Orr manages to remove this entertainment entirely and batter the player so they don’t want to return. This is self defeating.

I don’t want to lose the overall menace of Orr but I don’t want to have the feeling I’ve just been mugged by setting foot in there either. Tone it down a little bit, just enough so players can navigate through the area without being frustrated so much that they don’t want to return.

It would be useful if the developers mention on the forums if these issues are being considered for review because as it stands Orr is a real missed opportunity. It should be the area that shows off the full potential of the game and not the area where people end up frustrated.

Places where they could focus difficulty is events. Events can be as punishing as you want, why? It’s optional.

Skill challenges should be as brutal as they want, why? It’s also optional.

Travelling is not optional, so please don’t make it a pain in the ask.

Further solutions to make Orr less annoying:
-fix bugged events, especially the annoying catapults that shoot through walls, so you can’t hide behind walls.
-increase the hit points of guards on the roads, make them more resilient to risen, so they are truly useful instead now they are just pixels laying on the floor nobody cares about.
-put even more guards and scouts along the road for better protection.
-more escort missions, because they provide the fun factor to travelling through Orr and also give directions to newbies.

Guild wars should be war between orders, because orders are guilds too.

No kidding!! You lose one to gain another or they just join together since they don’t seem to ever want to leave you alone. And the respawn time kills me. I kill them and while in the process of trying to get what I killed them for such as skill points and the like, they kitten interrupt me cause they practically respawn right after they go down.

I’m not sure, personally I went into Orr and I actually enjoy the difficulty of it, sure I can’t run past groups and its frustrating, but getting a waypoint or a point of interest in itself is challenging and very rewarding once I get there.

I’m really enjoying it and it’s just what I’ve been looking for, a challenge. I do agree that the scale of difficulty is terrible when comparing heart zones with Orr, but still, I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be done in a group and if you’re soloing then expect it to be tough. It’s endgame content its not meant to be EASY. Sounds to me like people who dislike Orr are just too used to the handholding this game offered in previous areas.

And before you ask, I’m a melee mesmer, I had to respecc to a more tanky build because stuff is finally killing me and I welcome this with open arms.

Finally, a challenge.

I agree in part, the problem I have isn’t the difficulty overall but getting to events I want to do without being faced with a massive wave of mobs between me and my destination. If there are contested waypoints then it becomes harder because one death sends me backwards to a previous waypoint and chances of joining the event are reduced.

What will happen is that I will make a mad dash and hope to get through. I will die or the people I pass will die due to my mob train following me. I want the difficulty but I also want the ability to travel through the zone without pulling my hair out so I can enjoy the event content.

I shouldn’t need to be in a group to get from point A to point B to enjoy the group events.

It IS extremely annoying, I made a post about this as well not too far back. Don’t even get me started on underwater in Orr, it’s like, 10x worse than land if you can even fathom the possibility.

Going to the lower zones it feels like I’m playing a totally different game than I was in Orr. It’s just hilarious… but I’ve gotten used to it by now… STILL annoying though. And I’ll STILL never enter water in Orr. I may kitten through the land part, but man underwater it’s the same setting just more awkward + annoying plus my skills totally don’t fit my build under water so I’m at half my strength.

I just loooooove how the edit button disappears at random.

I wanted to add that I get what ANet was trying to accomplish with Orr, and I have adapted to it. I didn’t want to just make a post QQing about it but there are things they need to fix, not completely change the zone though. I believe it does give the more rare mats higher value because people just hate running through the zone and gathering etc.

It does have its purposes… but that underwater…….. /rage

Oh and go figure, the edit button appears the instant I make a new post.

Also, underwater is not a better option. They’ll use Dart, an animation-less fast move that can kill you in less than a second.

Yeah what is up with that seriously??? Who thought that would be a good idea? #1 reason I don’t enter water, way overtuned. I should mention I have like 2500 defense on my thief, and it still hurts the hell out of me. It’s literally instant too so good luck dodging that. 2 of em and you stand no chance trololo

Orr is defnitely a pain.
Risen Putrifiers, if I’m not mistaking, are the main reason. They can pull you back to them so you can get swarmed by the countless other Risen that have added. Among them there must be a Risen Farmer that will knock you down so you can get some more beating.

Also, underwater is not a better option. They’ll use Dart, an animation-less fast move that can kill you in less than a second.

And to add to that, their catapults shoot twice as fast than allied catapults.

Whether something is either wrong or right, someone will always complain about it.

OMG lol! Man most of you guys really have not played other mmos have you.
Orr is nothing compared to some mmos with mobs in every corners, below the hills, behind the trees and some mobs patrol the entire zone with a huge aggro circle.
And that plus players from the opposite faction in the zone.

GW2 is already known as a Carebear Mmo with No Pvp Servers. No PK, No Ganking, No Spawn Camp, Auto Target Facing (Press 1 and your characters immediately turn to your target, yet other mmos we gotta do mouse turns to face the target to attack) etc etc. You are free to quest, level, farm whatever in the world.

But i have to admit that i do get bored with Orr.
Not because there are tons of mobs (which is never a problem for me, hell the more the merrier! more junk loots for the vendor!),but yes its mainly due to the junk loots + DR.

In my opinion, a free PvP instance of the same server ala DCUO wound’t hurt.
But if free PvP is implemented on all servers, people are not going to like it. Because those who don’t like it seem to be more than you may think.

If you have to longbow kite as a warrior you should rethink your build, gear, slot skills, or tactics because you’re just plain doing it wrong. On my warrior I won’t even stop to fight unless there are 5 Risen to kill, and I do it in their face with a GS. That’s just travelling, when I feel like actually hunting and flexing I’ll pick fights with as many as 10 just to feel like I’m in danger. I do this in full MF, including trinkets.

Every single annoying mob skill can absolutely be avoided or countered, even when you’re fighting entire groups of them. I always like to use the most complained about one as an example, the hammer pull attack from the Risen Putrifier. This thing is absolutely the easiest thing to avoid since the lowly Goomba.

  1. This mob is easily identifiable even without its name (if you don’t have enemy names on) just by the silhouette that its weapon makes.
  2. If you select it, its nameplate even says right there “pulls.”
  3. This attack has an easy to identify windup that makes it easy to anticipate.
  4. This attack, if you for some reason don’t see the windup, gives you an unprecedented second chance to dodge as it doesn’t actually pull you when it first hits you. The mattock will travel past you, then return and on its way back is when it pulls you. The hit made by the first attack is also easily recognizable even if you didn’t know that there was a Putrifier in the area.
  5. If you dodge after the first hit, and before the second, not only do you do not get knocked down but the mob is knocked down and pulled to your feet offering its helpless skull for smashing. Yes, by simply dodging this attack you have disabled an enemy for an easy kill.

If you’re still getting ruined by this thing then I have to assume that you don’t like to look where you’re going, identify what you’re fighting, learn what your enemies like to do to you to make you die, or work to prevent them from doing these things. In which case, yes, Orr will probably give you problems and you will die alot. But then I really have no problems saying that the game shouldn’t be changed for people who don’t want to learn to play in its final level.

My favorite part though:

I believe red is dead and teabagging my foe because I’m the alpha you don’t mess with and now I’m trying to avoid combat at all costs.

This just strengthens my belief that all of the so called elite pvp’ers who spend their time ganking in other games are relying on something that’s definitely not skill

This industry just needs to move on. We’ve seen a bunch of “WoW 2.0” attempts, and
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien

@Jabronee Care bear mmo? You mean games like WoW where world pvp is open and no one will ever see each other since they are in their home cities staring at each other mounts and purple gear? Or AFKing until the day of the raid comes?

Or do you mean games like Aion where you simply get gang banged by people who can’t stand for themselves in pvp?

I really do think the approach developers took in reguards to much of this game’s attempt at difficulty was to design the encounter begrudgingly.

I think this is part of a much bigger problem that people who make games are being hired as employees rather than their game’s or ideas for games being bought and or contracted.

Don’t forget that the Arah Dungeon is never available since the dynamic event is always bugged. Think it’s 2 weeks since I last saw it open, at which point it closed before I managed to get a group and the following chain got bugged again.

Wish the Halloween event never happened and they put some of that effort into sorting out the problems with content already in the game. I have 2 level 80 characters and I’ve played my 2nd one for a long time past 80 now, I have yet to enter Arah yet since it’s always bugged.

The way the story quest keeps fapping on about Zhaitan and his evilness and then when you want to finally go beat him up, Nooooo, of course you can’t, he’s shut his gate and sits crying under a table inside.

Going to Arah is like taking a car full of kids for a long journey to a theme park and once you get to the entrance you tell them you can only look at it, they’re not going in.

Remove the Arah vendor in LA, you can’t get any tokens for it anyway.

PS: I’m assuming this isn’t just a problem on Piken Square EU server.

I recently completed the map of all 3 area’s of Orr, the only reason I’ll come back there in the future is for Arah or to help some friends. People told me I would come back to farm money, but I don’t think so…

If you die, you can’t go to a WP near you, they’re probably all contested! (Happened to me in Straits of Devastation, I had to WP all back to a place near Fort Trinity).

I hope the Sea of Sorrows won’t be an Orr copy with more water. Spoken of water, the worst risen enemy in my opinion are the risen pirates, especially in water. They cripple you and then do an insane attack that will eat half of your HP bar…

Orr is not fine. Theres a difference between being entertained with a real challenge in a game and being annoyed by having fight through the same repetitive packs of timesoaking mobs over and over to meet an objective.

Theres a difference between avoiding or training large groups of mobs for the sake of survival than avoiding or training those same mobs for the sake of circumventing the hassle of content that isn’t particularly difficult.

I would be willing to bet that Anet has listened to people’s concerns in reguards to this and that the new zone coming wont make the same mistake.

Orr is supposed to be hard. And kinda annoying. It’s supposed to nearly drive you insane trying to do it. It’s supposed to be a CHALLENGE.

One thing you guys might want to try is changing your strategy. Bring skills that cancel conditions, bring ranged weapons, bring a fast build. Just pounding heads in might have worked before, but child, THIS IS ORR.

And I’m sure that the new zone will be very very different from Orr. Notice how every zone is unique; Anet doesn’t like getting repetitive.

That was so funny, I laughed twice.

Anet doesn’t like getting repetitive.

I guess thats why were fighting the same 6 mob types in all the Orr zones.

Love the “vocal minority card” being played.

One of the greatest things one can do for their careers is simply “show up”. One can say the entire world we live in is run by the vocal minority. Well I guess the majority needs to SHOW UP and SAY SOMETHING, in more mass than the minority. Until then the minority is the majority and the rest is urban legend or of the same value.

Orr is fine. There is nothing wrong with it. It isn’t a bad zone. I truly hope Anet follows their previous pattern of logic and ignores the vocal minority.

I do not find having to pay more attention and put effort into navigating an end game like zone annoying at all. It is very fitting.

There is a HUGE difference between having to pay attention / being skillful and poor design that just makes things annoying. Release era Diablo 3 Inferno and Orr are examples of poor design. It is a GAME – it should be challenging – not annoying to the point of making you not want to play it. You should have the feeling of “UGH, so hard! I was beaten this time but I’ll try again!” NOT “WTF is this cheap BS, why do I even play this game? Not fun.” I as well as many other people fall into the latter quote, which is just sad for a game you hoped would be fun at ALL levels.

My wife finally got there last night, I knew it would be ugly. I sit quietly in my chair listening to a 45 minute diatribe on how badly the areas are designed.

I had warned her, she was not prepared.

I now avoid them like a sailor on leave avoids the “cheap” cat-house.

This is precisely the way I have felt since getting to 80

Level 80 area = not fun
Dungeons = Just painful

Imo avoiding following in the footsteps of the successful mmos was a huge mistake. The majority of time spent playing this game is after 80 and tbh theres not a lot entertaining to do
The reason so many companies do things a certain way is because that is a way they found that the majority of people like to play. Repeatedly dying isnt fun hence why dungeons arent fun and orr is just a waste of space

There is always the next big patch or the one after that. I’m almost 100% sure things will get better the game still very young and the later levels look rushed compared to the lower ones so the fundamentals are there they just need some time to cut and paste them together. Halloween was well done which gives me hope.

Im sorry to say this, but maybe it’s just you guys? I mean why should you be able to faceroll in orr? Or let’s put it this way, if you got problems with orr, its either gear, spec or skill problem.

Yes I get annoyed by putrifiers often aswell, but when they pull me back, I usually get all their friends within 50 yards in one group and aoe the crap out of them. They still do the same crap the next day but at that moment it atleast feels like they learnt a lesson. >.<

Do you see anyone in this thread saying “waaah waaah Orr is too DIFFICULT” no you see people saying " Orr is %^$#ing ANNOYING".

You know what was a good challenge? The mad clock tower. That was fun and it was hard.

You know what is pointlessly annoying? Orr. Orr is not hard, it is annoying. Hard takes willful concentration and practice like timing your jumps against a timer with small ledges or paths. Orr is a field of mobs that do nothing but SLOW YOU DOWN.

When that Risen scumbag says “EVERYONE! COME!” it’s because he wants to party and you have better things to do than party with a dead man that smells of marmite. You run away but he pulls you back and knocks you down. Then his friend comes along and says “COME BACK TO ORR”.

I’M ALREADY HERE!!!!!!
