Option: Disable Commander Tag
Yes please. It’s getting way out of hand. Dry Top’s becoming very confusing to navigate with all these rainbow tags.
no.
instead – more color choices please
Join squad option might help
Death by skittles is the new trend.

Holy poop… gimme that checkbox NOW! I’m flipping back and forth between my own map and an online interactive map to figure out where my missing heart quest is. THERE IT IS! Under that danged red commander!

There should be a toggle off button for tags. I try to play but cannot find vendors, nodes, POIs and many other things. Due to the sea of tags. I would like my map back for now the tags are no longer useful. There is to many and are displayed for no helpful reason.
I would dearly love the option to toggle the visibility of others’ Commander tags off for myself. I don’t want to take anything away from those who have invested in one of these things, but really would prefer to not have to see the Skittle clusters currently in game.
…or just stay out of Dry Top? I can’t be bothered with the place.
Strangely enough this “feature” was requested by WvW players, for WvW players and from what I’ve seen so far, we’re having no issues with this rainbow.

I ask this: why do you want it disabled? How does it annoy you?

Sounds good to me. Really though, Guild Commander Tags.
We’ve stopped asking for that.
i thought people couldn’t afford commander tags
what’s that you say, it was all lies?
arena net caved and a new feature is practically polluting tyria
hmm, that’s never happened before
now they’ll have to put in overtime for a needed feature disabler
or they’ll just disregard the situation for a year

Haven’t you read anything? They cover up all the map icons. Merchants. Waypoints. Hearts. Vistas. Harvesting Nodes. Etc. They also cover up edge-of-map icons pointing to important destinations. And they are NOT NECESSARY for the VAST MAJORITY of PvE. If I have the OPTION to turn off Commander tags, the only thing it hurts is your vanity.
(And EVERYTHING covers up the N pointer on my compass! (Grrrr!) )

Yes. Please allow individual users to disable commander tags. It is one check box it must be easy to toggle on and off on the clients side since it can be toggled on and off by the owners of the tags.
My game play is greatly affected by this, and those saying join a squad, this is not always an option. I might be doing something unrelated. Also 95% of the users with the squad tag have no squad they are just showing of the 100G tag.
I was dealing with the blue tags but I can not deal with GW2 turning into constant easter feel with multi coloured triangles everywhere and it is an eyesore. Seriously ANet, you made a beautiful game why allow it to be filled with multi coloured spam.
Please!
just join squad on any tag and you’re saved….
Archeage = Farmville with PK
I agree. Let me hide these stupid things so I don’t need to see them. They are useless to me unless I am in WvW or doing guild missions. I don’t need to see 200 commanders running around Queensdale or Southsun Cove.

ANet can’t allow you to disable them. The 35-year-old kiddies paid good coin to be one of the cool kids, and knowing that not everyone can see how cool they are would be infringing on their “right” to enjoy the feeling.
The commander tag is a good idea whose implementation wasn’t thought out over the long term (something that can probably be said about a lot of the game’s features), and now it’s too late. Allowing us to disable them after people have paid their 100g (and eventually 300g) to show off their tag would be a headache ANet surely doesn’t want to deal with, although I’d be happy to be proven wrong.
Welcome to Skittle Wars.
I think it is patch day of a new feature and people are having some “fun” with the new colours, I doubt the mini map will be this obnoxious once the novelty wears off in a week or two.
went EOTM a few minutes ago.. there where 19(!) of these things arround running all about. Didnt even bother to go into the map and just watched people asking all few seconds what the tag with the zerg is. Man… WvW is gonna be fun in the future

Hey, no need to slam the 35-year-olds.
But yes, commander tags are out of control. There have been between a handful to a dozen coming and going in Snowden Drifts for the last hour. And now they’re in rainbow colors. By the gods, make it stop.

That is just plain silly.
First of all the 100G or now 300G was not implemented to show off it was implemented as a way to assist in leading large groups of players in various WvW or guild pve events.
Second I can turn of a players name from displaying with a check and now you can even replace an entire charecter model with a generic so it should be well with in a players rights to turn on and off anything that can potentially spam the screen with clutter and ruin another players experience.
Agreed. Let us hide them.
For a patch that was supposed to make the game easier for new players I can’t imagine the tag spam in starting areas is very helpful.
It makes the mini map almost useless at some times as well. I’m sure new players are also confused by all of the arrows on their screen.

not only the minimap…
I have a feeling the tag spam will die down after several days. It’s often how stuff is with new stuff. Everyone does it and then it’s meh afterward.

I still don’t see why it should not be toggleable (is that a word?). I can remove plenty of other tags and info from my screen why can I not remove the commander tag? I don’t need to see it if I am not following any commanders.
When I go back to WvW where I appreciate it I could then turn it back on. To take it one step further I think commanders should have options aswell on who they want to see the tags, like friends only or guild only etc.
Things like this just make sense. Even before todays patch it was anoying seeing commander tags all over the place when those players are soloing and not leading anyone. Or the flip side 50 commanders are all bunched up leading 12 players.
I would think things like this would be game design 101.
I’m actually frequently missing mining nodes now, simply because I can not see them on the map.
Also I had to refer to Wooden Potatoes feature pack video so I could find where the Koutalophile Collector starter was.. couldn’t see it on the map! Not very user friendly.
This does need some kind of solution. The account-bound feature has pushed the tag situation solidly over the edge into gameplay-hurting territory.
The system has always had its share of issues – it’s just becoming more apparent now.
I don’t think a toggle setting is the answer though. The beauty of the system is being able to walk into an area and find a leader through their commander tag. A toggle just makes tags pointless – it still doesn’t solve the problem of trying to sift through and find a commander who is actually trying to be a commander.
Yeah, you can join someone’s squad, but it’s not the most robust or user-friendly of features. And it doesn’t help that squads are limited to 50 players.

There absolutely should be an option to turn commander tags off for the players that have no intention of using them. It falls in with all the other things on the screen I can toggle on and off.
After that they can implement whatever changes they want to the commander tags. This post is about players having an option to turn a feature off on our screens that we don’t want to have on our screens. The title does not say “What can be done to fix commander tags”. That is a very good topic but deserves it’s own thread and is a seperate issue.

I get that, but can you honestly say that you would still want a toggle off so badly if there was only 1 or 2 commanders running around at any given time?

Yes I think it should be an option. I would think it would be trivial to patch in aswell since the implementation exists to toggle it on and off already.
Honestly the feature should have already existed, recent changes have just highlighted the oversight.
Anytime something can be placed can potentially be spammed by many users it should have a toggle to keep the playing field clear of obstruction. The same that I can turn player names off so the screen is not a big green mess. See. It’s nice to see players names without having to press ctrl however the potential to have to many green player names on the screen at once warranted a toggle to hide the names.
edit: sorry the grammer of the past 2 paragraghs is not so great however I think the ideas presented come through just fine. English is not my first language and it is getting very late.

i’m looking at some of the alt changes and there are commanders running around the starter map in areas this character hasn’t even cleared yet.. aside from immersion breaking, don’t you think it’ll get annoying having to join a squad on every new map you go to to reduce tag spam..
#tagspam
PLEASE let us do this.. one of the first things I saw when I zoned into Divinity’s reach was about 8 different human females with purple commander tags.
Commanders, everywhere!

No worries. It is late for me as well and I’m not a stickler for grammar anyway, so you’re good.
I am usually 100% in favor of more customization options. I just feel like in this case it would be nothing more than a band-aid that undermines the point of commander tags being something that are visible map-wide.
On the one hand, I would love to be able to shut out the noise, even myself. On the other hand, I would hate to be a serious commander and have half the people ignoring me, out of a mixture of forgetting to toggle tags on and generally not paying attention.
I am just imagining people constantly asking “do we have a commander?” only to realize that they have tags turned off and forgot. >.<

Perhaps the toggle off could work the same way as when you toggle names off, just press Alt key and the commanders are visible. The developers are paid a lot of money surely they can come up with something that works. I’m not on the payroll, so I don’t won’t to commit hours out of my day to form a focus group and do the work for them.
In any event I’ll take the band aid. As I mentioned above. Once the trivial task of turning the commander tags off on the clients side. They can then focus on how further to fix commander tags.
Yes, please! Let me turn it off!
Come on, people are just happy with that update and want to fool around with the new shiny next to other happy people on day 1.
Give it a week, most people will get used to it, the effect will wear off, and everything gonna get to normal, but better with new abilities
NO.
First people turn off commanders tags because they don’t like several days of happy people, then whole maps yell at hordes of clueless randoms who turned off chat and commander tags simply ’cause they could change “something” in options, and ruin Teq and Wurm runs for the rest of the map.
We’ve had it with chat lang filter. No, just no.
Making commander tags 75-50-25% opaque? Yeah, okay.

Could I have the option to set the opacity to 0% then?
An easy work around is to right click any commander symbol and select join squad. It shuts off all other symbols on the map. It gives the commander no extra bonus or goodies. Just a suggestion.

Indeed, sir.
I pointed all this out 2 weeks ago. I even offered the best way to offer it up in the Options menu.
Anet’s response? Finger.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…

I had not seen that post, thanks for pointing it out. Just so everyone can see the concern existed before the patch here is a link to the thread https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Commanders-R-Us
A mini map option to shut the markers off would be great. It went from blue icons all around the edge of my mini map to multi colored ones.
How about an option for NONE! Mind you this had been an on going request with this game and has fallen on deaf ears.
I wanted to disable commander tags in PvE long before this patch, but yeah. It’s out of controoool. Couldn’t see the foxfire trees for the forest of multicoloured nachos in Orr last night. Please let us toggle them off!

You know what, screw it. I agree with you. Give us a toggle and then you can go back to working on Living Story, Anet. Thanks.
The 9am PST Teq run was so disorganized because 15+ ppl had their tags out and everyone was arguing on what to do regarding DD between the different phases. It was extremely annoying. At one point, some commanders started asking other commanders to please put their tags away. It was very chaotic. I wish I could just turn the tags off.
It’s a happy fad, that won’t last. Everyone is all excited they now have colored tags,a nd are just showing them off. After about a week or so you’ll start seeing it die off when people realize that trying to coordinate with so many tags causes them to fail everytime. Then you’ll see only colored tags when they are needed. Like red for attacking teq, Yellow for running interferance where needed. Blue for North defense, Green for south defense, purple for middle defense. Or something like that. I can almost bet TTS already has something figured out.
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”

What if someone is not partaking in the tequault event? Do they need to see the tags. Like I mentioned above, it is such a trivial task to implement a toggle on off option that I can’t see any reason why it should not be available. Do players take offense because I have toggled their name off and can not see it? To me it is the same principle.

If you are not participating in said events where tags are usefull, then it shouldn’t be an issue. This issue now is tags are everywhere with people showing them off, which by some reports is causing these events to fail as no one knows who is actually in command and showing off a tag. Which leads to confusion. My point is, it will die our, and tags will be used to organize, and life will continue on as normal.
The OP didnt really give any context to wanting the ability to turn tags off, so i can only assume this is what he referring to.

So the potential for abuse exists as has been proved and a feature to prevent that abuse should be implemented.
