New armor added to the game today – but don’t be happy just yet – it’s an outfit.

This means you either use all of it or none of it.

I dislike the new outfit overall – wouldn’t even wear it – however the helm looks really great and I would love to mix it with some of my other armor options.

But guess what – I can’t.

So what gives? Why are we getting “outfits” instead of armor sets now?
It has the first decent piece of heavy headgear that they gave us since release but there’s no way to get it.

Is this ever going to be changed? I want more armor in the gem store – not outfits.
Is there any way to maybe make it if you unlock the outfit you can use parts of it?

What do you guys think?
Personally I’m sick of the whole “outfit” thing. It kills diversity and just seems like a step in the wrong direction.

I was about to agree with you until I thought of this:

Usefulness of outfits:

>You can chop and change on the fly without changing your stats or spending transmute charges all the time.

>You can select a heavy-looking outfit for a character that you’ve not found heavy-enough looking armour yet. E.g. my mesmer wears vigil armour because his style is not to look like a mesmer!

Its a lazy way of making armor, its a way for them to not worry about clipping issues (yet there’s still plenty of clipping interaction with character models) and actually gives us no freedom in our new found wardrobe system. I would like to see less of this.

I am, without a doubt, a cosmetic nerd. I am always addicted to dressing up my toons to be sexy or badas, etc.

I like the outfits, it’s account wide and requires no transmutation stones. However, I agree that it isn’t always ideal. I am guessing it is one way to address the clipping issues with mix and match items.

It’s an attempt to appeal to a larger group than town clothes did because town clothes weren’t compatible for combat.

Whether or not the change WORKED… well, I’ve personally seen more outfits in game than people in town clothes before. Your mileage may vary.

I have no issue with them adding outfits, they are simply the replacement for town clothes. Which, I know some people are going to holler about because of the lack of mix and match issue, but we have to face the fact that some of us did ask for this (guilty here). We wanted to be able to use “town clothes” similarly to how we used costumes in GW1. As such, they took our suggestions, our feedback ,and wha-la…outfits. However, they needed to overhaul the original town clothes system which took 90% of them out the game.

These aren’t a replacement for armor skins, I agree with that. However, I don’t agree that they are being lazy or trying to skimp out on us. We’ll see more armor skins (they just gave pvp 2 for crying out loud), right now they are just playing ‘catch up’ on returning “town clothes” (in a sense) to the game. I’m sure they have relatively limited resources devoted to this area.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

So all they need to do to make them 100% better and more versatile and hence more popular, is to sell them complete, but split the head gear and have a separate slot for it, just like they had in gw1.

Stuff that falls outside “normal” armor designs that can be used in combat… i.e. the reason why most players were completely uninterested with the original town clothes (stuff that required a bit more effort to do and were not particularly well adopted by the player base).

I agree with the OP and dislike the current trend of outfits. I’m all for certain outfits, like our old town clothes and Halloween and Christmas outfits, holiday to sum up, type of sales.

But this sale of armor now is tiring. You have plenty of other armor skins in the gem store that are not outfits – please continue with that. It’s what most like (i’m assuming, I could be wrong). It’s customizable which GW/GW2 does amazingly.

Of course, the only plausible way is to vote with your wallet. So, if you don’t like it, don’t get it. At the end, hopefully we’ll see what this leads to.

Well outfit vs armor what do you need to do what do you give up and what do you risk.
Outfit are not able to be mixed but if you wanted just a have bits of gear then you can just simply transmute and not just to kittenize a full set that may end up looking far worst and not working out at all due to other armor types.
The big thing you forgetting is that outfit just cover over and can be removed at any time for another with out any type of lose if it was a transmute deal you would lose the armor you transmuted it to.
The risk is that they will add in another set that you like more now you must re-transmute your gear or simply get a new gear set.

I also don’t particularly believe all that crap about layers and the corbamite manuever and a flux capacitor and the zero effect (good movie) were preventing them from turning ‘all’ the old clothes into sets. They just didn’t wanted to use the opportunity to make the game more healthy and appropriate (I believe was the phrase one of them used in one of those Cognitive Dissonance threads). Never did get any input from them as to what game breaking issue was solved by changing the human female running animation. Probably another HaP thing for them.

I actually prefer having certain armour appearances as outfits. It allows freedom in how your character looks without being limited by profession.

In GW1 my warrior wore the Shining Blade outfit, because I didn’t want him looking like a warrior.

Having this appearance as an outfit allows a similar change from the lighter classes if you don’t fancy wearing one of many trench coats or pyjamas

THIS x100

Outfits should be like dressing up for Halloween, the cook, the witch, the pirate, mad king, bloody prince, the executioner….. these all make sense!

But this new outfit looks like it should be worn by a Divinity Reach noble guard or something, it should be a heavy armour exclusive outfit at the very least.

It scares me that on the front page were the advertise this latest outfit they boast about how your non heavy armour classes can now wear heavy armour, that disgusts me greatly.

Seriously disappointed ArenaNet.

They listened to feedback and added Belindas Greatsword, so maybe they will listen and add this outfit as a six piece armour set for heavy armour wearers only too. They wont remove the current outfit from the gemstore now, sadly it’s to late, damage done.

Add this outfit as a six piece heavy armour exclusive ArenaNet! I will never buy the outfit, but i will gladly pay 1000 gems for armour.

Whenever it comes to a lot of features, I’m of two minds.

Personally, I would prefer a game just give players all the tools. Wanna mix and match outfits? Go for it, but accept that the end result isn’t always going to be pretty and sometimes there’s not going to be any way to make EXACTLY the look you want work.

Want First Person View? Go for it, just understand that it’s NOT for combat, and that if you’re in FPV and some Abomination stomps you in the face from behind, that’s YOUR problem.

But on the other hand… oh good God do I know how stupid people can be. And if you give them all the tools, it’s support that has to handle all that inane stupidity. Like “these two pieces clip! How could you break this game! This happens EVERY TIME you release a new look!” or “This game is totally bugged! I can’t see what’s happening! I’m dying to things I can’t see! WTF ANET???!!!!”

I feel I’m in Chris Rock skit with some of these things:

Honestly this is a horrible idea to add outfits why? Because you can’t mix and match if they are trying to get rid of mix and match then there will be no diversity in armors. It’s bad enough they don’t add any decent armors in game but if they are going to add it to the gem store they should at least let you have freedom with your skin that you bought!

i don’t have a problem with it….for now.
I like that there are some “skins” that require no transmutation charges….and the only fair trade-off is to limit it’s versatility (can’t mix and match like wardrobe pieces). The Zodiac armor skins probably would have made more sense as outfits, actually.

but if this is the way they do armor skins going forward, i would be greatly disappointed. they should try to release them 1:1….for every outfit, a 6-piece set.

The ceremonial outfit and ancestral outfit I don’t think would make good mix and match armors anyway. I mean, nothing realistically would match them. I find outfits to be very convenient since they’re unlocked account-wide and don’t cost charges to apply. They’re incredibly useful if you use multiple armor sets (e.g. for WvW) and can’t be bothered to burn charges on an armor set that you don’t use that often. I’m fine with Anet releasing outfits as long as they can maintain the quality level of the ancestral and ceremonial outfits.

That said, options are always good. The ceremonial outfit is beautiful but the shoulders are a huge eyesore. I would love to be able to toggle them off like the helm. I also share your concern about the lack of true armor sets. I think the last time new armor sets were released was around the time of the last feature pack, which is absurd.

Btw I can understand why Anet has been focusing on outfits over armor sets recently, because let’s face it, many players run around in full T3 or gemstore sets anyway so why bother.

However, that being said, 3 new outfits a trend does not make. I will say I wouldn’t mind seeing a few new armor sets appear as well, but either way I’m not loosing sleep over it. Why not create a model box for the entire outfit, then add those little hide tick boxes for each part? Simple isn’kitten And you wouldn’t have to change the way the outfits are made only the way they’re displayed.

You still wouldn’t be able to mix and match outfits but by hiding a particular part it would then show your actual armor and so you can mix and match your looks that way.
