Outfits instead of armor skins
I’m not interested in any of the skins they are removing, but still I think it’s pretty awful to do this.
Presumably they’re going to be throwing up new items when HoT comes out. This of course presumes there’s some technical limit to how many items can be listed on the store or a desire to keep the store from getting too bloated, but that’s nevertheless my guess.

Nothing any different what box stores do!!! So what’s the problem here?

it is a puzzling decision. there are so many threads with fans of the game begging for more armor sets (not skins) and more choice…to take these away feels wrongheaded.
and i actually would be ok if they were replacing these sets but we already know there are only 2 new armor sets in hot…how did the devs interpret threads asking for more armor sets as ‘take armor sets away’?
it reminds me of the last event. players are constantly lamenting the sorry state of loot in the game and in the last event..we got no loot! we seem to be getting the opposite of what we want lately…

Armor sets will be gotten in game only, while the gem store will be for outfit skins from what I remember Anet saying little while back.

all two of them. :P

Specifically what they said is that from the time of the announcement onwards (so in practical terms from the release of HoT onwards) the people who previously worked on making new armor sets for the gem store will be making new armor sets to be in-game rewards, and having a dedicated team doing it will enable them to add more (presumably at the same rate as they appeared in the gem store).
Which is what a lot of players have been asking them to do for a long time.
Meanwhile the gem store will only get outfits – not armor.
Now from this point on this is purely speculation but my guess is that means the gem store is going to get a lot less new additions, so to keep it interesting they’re going to cycle what they’ve got instead of having everything available all the time. Which isn’t ideal for players – but oddly enough it is an effective sales tactic.

2 armor sets announced for expac. saying there will be more is wishful thinking.

If we go by that. Then armor we where shown before GW2 launch means we should have 2-3 armor sets per armor type.
Just because it’s not been shown will not mean they won’t be more than 2. We will probably get.more from the PS/LW. Might even be more karma armor, as I’m sure there are plenty of people swimming in karma right now.

Anet, please change your mind on the outfit/gemstore idea. Outfits are only good to place on non-level 80 characters. Once you hit level 80 that’s when you can really customize your character. Outfits don’t allow you to do that and you’re just running around looking like everyone else and that kind of sucks.

Not to say I love outfits or anything but I see plenty of 80s running around in them.

All that says is that 1 player was able to find info on 2 new armor sets in the announcements. The fact that they happen to have a fan page to post their findings on doesn’t turn it into an official announcement on the full content of the expansion.
Anet are not going to list every single thing that will be in the expansion, just like they didn’t list every single thing that was in the core game when it came out. As far as I remember their discussion on armor sets before release was entirely centred on the fact that each dungeon would have a unique one, with passing mentions that others would be available elsewhere. (And a lot of talk about the transmutation system.)
Admittedly this does mean we don’t know how many will be in the expansion, just that it will be 2 or more. But we also know already that they will continue to add stuff after the initial release – raids for one thing – and I’d be very surprised given their announcement about the shift to releasing armor skins in-game if that didn’t include making new sets as rewards.
Otherwise they’ve taken a whole team of people off designing content to sell in the gem store and moved them to making…nothing. Which wouldn’t make any sense at all.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Nope, just take the team off outfits and put them on armor : )
Probably because the vast majority of the player base convert gold to gems to buy gemstore items.
I can’t blame them for removing items if it helps them increase rl money gem purchases.
They might as well remove everything from the gem store if converting gold to gems is the problem.
Why don’t they just move these old gem store armors to an ingame merchant?
Are they removing items to create scarcity? Yes.
Will they bring them back occasionally to promote sales? Yes.
This is what many business’s do. This is standard business practice. This is literally taught in any marketing class in high schools all across the USA.
Is there something you want? Buy it. Otherwise I suggest you learn to suck it up and get used to the adult world.
I’m sure you’ve learned to suck it up but the issue is not bad marketing strategy. The issue is limiting armor choices especially now that we have an influx of new players. Seems like a bad idea.
There are plenty of skins still left up in the gemstore.
Such an overreaction. o_0

FYI – Not all high schools in the USA teach marketing, each state’s curriculum is different from one another.

Whatever happened to “the customer is always right” as a business practice. Just because marketing classes promote predatory business practices doesn’t mean I should applaud businesses for using them.
They said they’re making a “Seasonal Change”. That implies they’re putting away the summer gear until next summer. They’ll be getting out the fall stuff right now.
No need to pronounce doomsday. They didn’t say the items are leaving forever. I’d like to also point out that they said they won’t be making any NEW armor skins in the gem shop. That doesn’t mean they won’t keep rotating the old armor skins.

Did you just miss the entire point?
It creates scarcity, therefore when people have the opportunity to buy it they’re more likely to buy it. A simple bit of math showing the declining sales on a bell curve would indicate that it’s in ANETs best interest to now limit the availability of the skins in hopes of boosting overall sales.
It’s math. The fact that you can’t understand a concept like this speaks volumes.
I dunno, I would have thought that by now people in game whos cash shop plays the rarity card by making some stuff available on a schedule…this would have all been something people don’t get mad over.
Has anyone thought they might be taking stuff out now, then adding other stuff closer to HOT and when HOT launches?
btw I’m a huge fan of doing this in a free to play game, makes the purchases I make feel more valuable when you cant just pick it up any time you want.

I guess im just lucky I went to high school 20+ years ago before the education system was gutted to the bone.

I actually think this would be a valid argument if we had seen more armor sets in the past year. but..since we have seen 1 new armor set(cara/lumi are the same set) in roughly a year the idea that hot will see a flood of new armor sets seems like a pipe dream.
i don’t think they want to make armor sets due to the difficulty/work involved and have switched to outfits. in the first year and a half we saw 50 armor sets for each weight class…in the last year or so we have seen 1.
could be dulfy has this completely wrong and they are planning on releasing a ton of new armor sets but the track record says differently.
I’m aware of the concept. That your conditioned to accept it speaks volumes about you, Godofmoney. Creating false scarcity is a predatory business practice. If Anet want to make money they should do it with the quality of their products not these marketing gimmicks.

I guess I just understand how much it costs to pay a mortgage in Seattle, healthcare, transportation, etc. I don’t blame a business for trying to make money.
I could argue that Apple inc. does poor business by making they’re products with proprietary ports, yearly updates and overpriced hardware. But you know what I do instead of complaining on forums? I don’t buy apple products.
How about you speak with your money? You could stop paying for GW2…..oh wait a second!
I do speak with my money. I don’t buy outfits.

I couldn’t disagree more. It adds value to those who do buy it. Even if its fake and just because they choose only to sell items at certain times for a short period of time.
For instance in world of tanks, I wouldn’t have bought half the tanks that I did if I knew they would always be available.
Has nothing to do with conditioning really, just understanding that if you see something you want, and its only available for a few days, you should probably pick it up…then enjoy the fact that not everyone will have it down the road.
If everything ever offered was always available…there wouldn’t be any sought after cash shop items, the “good stuff” everyone who wanted it would have it and it would be just mundane items they you either have or don’t.

I do speak with my money. I don’t buy outfits.
Then I don’t see your problem.
Why is it always the guy who doesn’t spend any money on the game the one who complains about stuff like this? Every kitten time.
I spend money on the game but not on outfits.
If they introduced more armor I would spend.
That little pencil down in the corner allows you to edit (and add) to your previous posts.
Last spring, they ‘cleaned out’ the Gem Store offerings, and nothing horrid happened. I will wager a guess those items may see a return, and the items being retired temporarily now will show up next spring.
Good luck.

I’ve never heard of a high school teaching marketing. This must be in LA or NY.
I’m just sitting here WB farming thinking to myself. Did someone really call a video games false scarcity “predatory” as that drug company bumped up the price for a Toxoplasmosis drug by 5,000%.
You have to take a drug to save your life. You do not have to buy a skin in a video game. There’s a difference.
Do words have no meaning anymore?
Of course it isn’t nearly as important as a drug to save your life. No one is arguing that. It is still a tactic that preys on consumers fears that they might not have another chance to get these armors for a looonnngggg time so they rush to buy it. Why does the company limit choices. I don’t see any logical reason for it besides the gimmick.

Those exchange gems are still purchased in the first place.
The items in question have been around for too long, haven’t they? Still, I got all that I need from the collection about to be boxed away.
They have been around for a long time, but they will be fresh choices for newer players.
Whatever happened to “the customer is always right” as a business practice.
They did listen to their customers, which is why there have been no new armor skins in the gem store and we’re stuck with outfits instead.

we can’t say they ‘listened’ to the fans on this matter. it isn’t as if they stopped putting armor sets in gem store and started introducing armor sets in game-they have simply stopped making armor sets completely.
Okay, here goes. More armor less outfits. I hope Anet listens to that.

Fair point. But I don’t blame them for focusing their efforts on things that generate income more directly. If there hadn’t been an outcry about armor skins being in the gem store, I’d imagine there would be more armor sets available. Expecting them to put the same amount of effort into armor skins as a non-paid item as they did before strikes me as a touch on the naive side. That is, when people demanded there not be more gem store armors, they should have realized the net result would be fewer armor skins.
Why does the company limit choices. I don’t see any logical reason for it besides the gimmick.
Actually, a less cluttered gemstore (or other such interface) is more appealing to people that are new to it. We’ve had a nice influx of new F2P players (in theory). Keeping the gemstore undaunting makes it more likely that they’ll make the jump and buy something. The “missing” stuff can be sold to them when it cycles back in, but they’ll never buy it if the clutter of the gemstore just pushes them away.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
They could have removed all of the outfits. That would get rid of the clutter.

Actually, I’d like to see Outfits in a separate tab, away from the transmutable skins.
