Patch Notes Up! Discussion
My guess is the “quitters” will be back. I hope they didn’t delete their characters already. Scratch that. If they did I hope they took the time to mail me their gold.
On another note my highest level character is a ranger I use for PvE. I’ll just have to work to adapt my play style to fit in with the changes. I don’t mind new challenges.
Yeah, there will be usefull builds still, probably more than a few. In time peeps will adjust and still have fun with the class.
…I’m switching to my Guardian for WvW though.
mesmer in hell…………………
ranger nerf not hard enough… BM ranger still viable
Interesting, I am a mesmer and am stoked about the changes! The only thing that got me was the longer cooldown on Blurred Frenzy Granted I PvE, maybe worse for PvP mesmers?
Rangers are being hysterical and reactionary. The changes are in the right direction. Longbow buffs with more clearly defined roles for each bow type. Shortbow will still be very playable. Pet nerfs aren’t a big deal because pets have always represented too much of a ranger’s power.
How?
Rangers didn’t receive any damage increases(aside from the useless sb increase) to make up the “represented power” lost by the pets, except for some might buffs, which are for pets.
And I personally dislike the SB nerf, it’s like they nerfed a weapon that was just fine, in order to make a mediocre weapon(LB) more appealing.
Having tested it out on a serker build i can say categorically that the longbow buffs are entirely insignificant. It just seems to be massive nerf after nerf and tiny useless buff after tiny useless buff.
They are not insignificant. The reduction on the aftercast of Long Range Shot alone corresponds to a roughly 20% buff to its basic DPS. This means it’s working as it was originally intended – the mid-range is the ‘default’ DPS, while you take a modest penalty at short range and receive a modest bonus at long range.
Pet nerfs aren’t a big deal because pets have always represented too much of a ranger’s power.
Except they didn’t buff the Ranger itself in the process. They just nerfed a bootload of our damage output without compensating us. All they would need to do is just add a decent power signet or something and it wouldn’t be SO bad.
It was good to see a slight buff to the LB as it needed to be buffed. Sadly, the balancing doesn’t leave the ranger, well, balanced in the game. I think there was some rational, forward movement with the necro, but not with the ranger or engineer.
Anytime a class gets any other nerf, of course they’re going to complain about it.
Nerf warriors and guardians and you’d get the same thing.
Except that Warriors and Guardians do need(pve) nerfs. There’s hardly many Rangers left to complain anyways and on a patch where most classes got buffs(including Guardians, not sure about Warrs), Rangers got buffs that helped very little and more nerfs.
Or give the other classes something to contribute in groups kitten .

Discussion….gather feedback
As a pve players i feel treated as a series C player as Always….
i feel really really offended…
Warrior still rocks, guardian is still overpowered and weak classes are weaker while having a new pve Bad class as mesmer….
The best part is the nerf makes the game less fun due to increased cooldowns and increse of unbalance.
We will pass more time waiting and less playing with less possibilities.
Oh and what about the interview about not introduces HUGE nerfs instead of small steps?
How much your public word Worth?
P.S.
I wonder if pvp players so happy of the new balance will buy gems instead of PvE players unsatisfied with current situation…..
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

I’ll wait until I actually test around the changes, but overall I’m happy with the guardian changes, and I think my mesmer (scepter-pistol/staff condition damage) got a buff..

Yeah, that was one rough buff to the class.
Or rather: they buffed up weaker builds and lowered down stronger ones – result: more parity and wider diversity of options.
Since when has more options been a bad thing?

Assuming the AoE Looting works as it sounds, it was LONG overdue and very welcome. I LOVE running the Hinterlands event chain, but HATE looting during because of all the Seraph Archer conversations I inevitably get hooked into
As far as the changes to thieves, they look like nice tweaks… then again, being one who uses a lot of those skills, of course it would to me.

They nerfed pets to the point where a Jaguar’s Maul does the same damage as its regular attack, and somebody’s already tested everything. The only thing that does good damage now as a pet is a bird. The pet is 30-40% of our total damage in battle. They nerfed it by 50% without buffing the ranger in return. That’s a 15-20% total damage drop across the board for rangers. That’s a super nerf, and one I THOUGHT ANet was smart enough to avoid.
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
A. Anet pretty much removed Rangers Choice in pets..I mean we didn’t have much of a choice before..You basically had the choice between which DPS pet you wanted…Birds,Cats,Drakes and to some extent Dogs……We begged Anet to fix our Pet system and give us some variety…Their solution..Nerf pet damage….thing is…Its so bad now that Birds are now the ONLY viable pet.. and I mean that…Spiders for example hit harder then Cats..Zero reason to use Cats…
B. The Range Reduction on Shortbow has resulted in people saying “Well they did buff your damage by 15% on some of your skills” This is true…They did…However the 15% damage buff has resulted in those skills actually hitting for the same damage as our auto attack does now..Before they actually did less..Which is why they were situational abilities…in Exchange we lost 300 bloody range…Which is massive….
C. Rangers in general are the only class that didn’t get anything this patch remotely useful..Pretty much everything is a nerf… or fake utility that doesn’t change anything.

Hmm….as I said when people were discussing the leaked skills, some of it looks interesting. I haven’t had a chance to log in and play (stuck at work, bah humbug) so I can’t comment on how they affect me.
My main is an ele, my farmer is a Ranger (go ahead, do a double take). We’ll see how the bow changes affect the ranger (who runs pigs as her pet -gasp of horror from other rangers-). It may or may not bother me overly much, but I can swap back to sword/dagger if I feel ‘underpowered’ and swap one of my birds back in. -shrug-
Maybe I’m too laid back about how much damage I do. Still, skill adjustments are just another challenge to meet and overcome, in my book. 35 minutes to go…..and then the hour drive home…. before I can patch. =)
Classes that got more build diversity:
-Engineers in roaming
-Thieves with conditions
Necros still suck in roaming situations
Mesmers are now only going to be going shatterer. Just what this game needs more people going burst.
Rangers seem to have little build diversity and I don’t see them being popular anymore.
Warriors seemed to have been balanced for PvE and got messed up in PvP, especially for roaming situations in WvW.
I feel like this patch damaged the build diversity and overall Balance of the game more than it helped.
Rangers are being hysterical and reactionary. The changes are in the right direction.
Rangers have been asking for one of two things:
1- Make the pet able to hit moving targets
or
2- Reduce the pets damage and move it towards the rangerThey didn’t do #1 and they did the first part of #2…
Am I the ONLY one who saw all of those ranger skills that got a 14% damage boost?
Quick Shot: Decreased the range to 900. Increased the damage by 14%.
Crippling Shot: Decreased the range to 900. Increased the damage by 14%.
Concussion Shot: Decreased the range to 900. Increased the damage by 14%.
And then:
Swirling Strike: Increased damage by 33%.
Call Lightning: Increased the damage by 150%.
And these:
Long Range Shot: Reduced the aftercast from .5 seconds to .25 seconds. Increased the arrow speed by 15%.
Rapid Fire: Reduced the initial cast time by .4 seconds. Increased the arrow speed by 15%.
Point Blank Shot: Increased the arrow speed by 15%.
Barrage: Increased the cripple duration by 50%.
Splitblade: Reduced the aftercast from .4 seconds to .2 seconds.
Path of Scars: This skill now pulls enemies on the return flight.
Stalker’s Strike: This skill no longer loses evade duration when traited with
Winter’s Bite:. Fixed an issue so that it now chills for 3 seconds (as listed in the tooltip) instead of 2 seconds.
Keen Edge: This trait now activates when the player strikes a target whose health is below 50%, instead of when the player’s health reaches 75%.
- That’s a BIG buff…
Beastmaster’s Might: This trait now grants 3 stacks of might for 15 seconds.
- Suicide pets FTW.
Spotter: This trait has been increased from 70 precision to 150.
- That’s insanely good.
Companion’s Might: This trait now grants 5 seconds of might to the player’s pet (up from 1 second).
- There’s your pet damage back.
Peak Strength: Damage bonus when the player’s health is above 90% has been increased from 5% to 10%.
- Big buff to the ‘stand in the back half AFK’ WoW style “hunters”.

Except that Rangers are already a few tiers below all of the other classes anyways so nerfing the strongest builds were the only builds that made them semi-viable in the first place while the others weren’t buffed enough for compensation.
The problem is that they’re not addressing Rangers for dungeons at all. They’re just adjusting everything seemingly for WvW and PvP even when other classes are much stronger than they are anyways. Sure LB sucked, and now it’s slightly less sucky, but the truth of it is that Rangers still have a broken mechanic(pet) and at this point in time it would almost be better for them to just remove it completely and rename the class to archer or something if they can’t get it right.
Is the hysteria here as bad as it is in the warrior sub-forum? The patch notes look pretty good to me; but those guys are losing their minds because their precious ’zerker greatsword build took a bit of a nerf, which of course means the world is ending as we speak.
Mesmers are now only going to be going shatterer. Just what this game needs more people going burst.
I saw the opposite.
Harder to reach the shatter cooldown reduction trait, but illusions have a 270% boost in health. Time for builds that rely on illusions being alive rather than sacrificed.

I’m actually sorely disappointed with these changes. They’re making already viable builds/classes even stronger and making less viable builds even less viable.
For example, with the guardian we get nice buffs to the greatsword, which is arguably already the most popular guardian weapon, but they don’t bother to buff the torch or sword, which you barely ever see being used. Sure you could count the 20% burning duration increase, but you could already keep burning up 100% of the time with a torch even without that buff, so it’s not even worth considering as an improvement.
As it is, I hardly ever see any sword torch guardians. When I do I look outside my window to check whether there’s a blue moon out. Now we’ll see even less of them thanks to the greatsword buff, which makes the weapon even more desirable now and basically kicks the sword straight to the curb. The only up for guardians that I that I think is truly worth praising is that spirit weapons are becoming somewhat more viable again.
And what the hell is up with rangers? Most of their pets get damage nerfs but they don’t get any feasable damage buffs to offset the nerf. As it is, Rangers were already weak in the damage department, but now it’s almost as if Anet wants the class to be completely unplayable. And where’s the buff to spirits? Those things are kitten -poor and yet they’re still completely ignored to this day.
And then, to throw salt in the wounds, warriors get more buffs and basically no nerfs worth mentioning. Hell, I was at least expecting a nerf to forceful greatswords, which in my opinion, is the most OP trait in the entire game. I mean come on, a master trait that gives a 20% cooldown to swords and spears and causes you to gain might on crits with both weapons, with no internal cooldown? That’s just ridiculous. You can easily gain 25 stacks of might with that trait in the first few seconds of battle using 100 blades and even then, you still get 20% cooldowns on top of it. It should at least be a grandmaster trait and even then I’d nerf it to only have a 40% chance to give might on crits. It would still be better than most grandmaster traits even with that kind of nerf.
All ranting aside, power to thieves, Mesmer and Necros. Your buffs are the only ones that really make sense to me. >_>
(On a side note, air spells for mesmer are still to weak and completely non-viable next to fire. Also, it would have been nice if they made summoned weapons more viable as well because most eles won’t want to trade a skill slot for a temporary weapon that has so few charges).
Takes deep breath and meditates to calm down.
Thanks for AoE looting and Gifting.

Same here. Actually my mesmer (scepter-pistol/staff condition damage) seems to have gotten a nice buff, but won’t say for sure until I’ve tried it (which most likely won’t be until tomorrow).

No – I’m more excited about the buff to Orb of Wrath.
Finally ranged guardians are viable ;D
They were always viable. It’s how some poor fool shoots down at me from a wall and I not only down them but collect a bag from them too. =p
You might argue that that wouldn’t be true with opponents with >0.5 brains or >0.1 mph movement, but in most situations in pve and wvw that is not the case.
I’ll enjoy it anyways though.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Ahaha yeah sure +28 damage is a lot of difference. I don’t really care about the range but seriously that was a Nerf not a buff. In WvW or Spvp it might be fair (BM bunker) but Dungeons… as if we weren’t already trash that’s no help for our team now we are just trolls.
Look, it’s like this. Some of the biggest “succesful” WvW guilds did not accept rangers before this patch. Because they lacked damage and utility. Likewise, in dungeons, rangers were not accepted to groups because they lacked DPS and group utility that increases group DPS.
Sooooo, what does Anet do? Decrease the overall DPS of the ranger. Who cares if you increase a skill that already hit like a wet towel by 14%, if you nerf the rest by 30 to 50% – including the basic no cooldown attacks of entire pet groups, such as drakes and dogs, as well as the hardest hitting attacks of individual pets – you will lose a lot of DPS, plain and simple. It’s mind-boggling this went live.
I mained a ranger since beta. She has a 2500 gold worth of goodies, including a legendary (the Dreamer). She will be reduced to my gather-and-underwater-daily character. I don’t even want to play her anymore, because I can’t stand the fact that anyone telling my ranger is useless compared to other classes is right. I’m beyond furious.
I’ll end with a recent quote from two of the best rangers we have, posted on the ranger forum:
Rofl….at people who think losing 300 range on shortbow is made up by increasing the damage of 3 abilities by 15%, that all hit for less then crossfire in the first place.
Lets clear something up here…
People who are trying to pretend that kitten sandwich you’re eating is chicken are kidding themselves…
There is nothing positive about these nerfs, There is nothing is going to make up for them in this patch, You’re going to be doing less damage and with less range… The Ranger as a whole is collectively worse then it was before.
Quit pretending that everything is puppy dogs and rainbows.
This. A lot of people are in denial thinking rangers came out better. Longbow is still crap where its main damage skill is reduced greatly by how far the enemy is from you.
Well Ranger’s are officially dead.
Already the weakest class but now they have a massive gutting of their damage and Shortbow useless for its main role. A few tweeks here and there so people who never played the class can say ‘but but your stun on a 25 sec recharge now does 20 more damage you totally got more buffs’. Spirits still useless, Shouts slightly less useless but still based around a pet that now does no damage so hardly a buff there.
That isn’t even mentioning all the buffs other classes got further widening the power gap between Ranger and everybody else.
Mesmer changes are stupid too. They force people out of phantasm builds and back to Shatter. Interruption builds could be good now but that stills leaves us with the same number of builds pre patch. So much for this patch trying to encourage build diversity.
Compounding Celerity is stupid, Mesmers have been asking for increased run speed out of battle for getting around PvE and WvWvW but instead they have increased their in battle run speed. It should give you a 30% increased movement that drops down to 0 the more illusions you have out. Blurred Frenzy is a massive nerf too with the amount of retaliation being thrown out everywhere.
Edit: Also scepter auto attack is still crap and using a block to apply torment seems kind of bad. Will have to play with that first though.
(edited by Levetty.1279)
Guardian changes were a bit underwhelming.
Made zeal a little better, perhaps more desired.
Gave us a ranged attack that can actually hit something.
Some small buffs here and there to underused utility and traits, nothing huge.
Hopefully that does make all out DPS builds more viable for guardian, but the 10k base hp is still going to scare people into defensive builds.
Finally able (I hope) to use the scepter efficiently is going to be nice, but overall guardians stayed the same. I think that is good since I feel all classes should be brought up/down to where the guardian is in sPvP and PvE.
Just played the new dungeon as 0/0/30/30/10 Guardian – GS/Staff, felt no difference whatsoever.
Anyways, the new dungeon although quite nicely made was still too easy.
The boss battle still felt too long and boring, and the whole dodging thing was, well, I dont know, not that great, reminded me old 2d games for some reason.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m up for long dungeons, but, eh, this one just seemed, as I said, boring.

I didn’t see any GS skills in there. But then again I last used a great sword on my warrior during day one of headstart… O.o
Berserker’s Power and Heightened Focus were both moved to the grandmaster tier, making GS Warriors choose one or the other if they want to still run Forceful Greatsword. And since the burst ability for GS is meh, they were better off sitting on Adrenaline with these two traits.
Not sure about the hatred on the Ranger changes yet; haven’t been able to play (working; gotta pay them bills). BUT, from reviewing some of the discussion, I’m not positive it will phase me all that much … mine is a LB/GS Ranger (dunno why, just like the animations more?) and a I run a bear as my pet, which, unless I miss something, didn’t get touched at all. And with said setup and said pet, I’ve been able to solo champs without too much trouble — time consuming, sure, but doable. And that’s something I’ve never been able to do on my zerk warrior, which, of course, is probably due to by lack of hand to eye coordination rather than the build itself. But until I have the chance to run the patch and play around a bit, not sure if it will be as cataclysmic as the comments I’ve seen so far.

We sorta stayed the same. no real buffs no real nerfs. No complaints though from me. I suppose scepter was a buff, but I consider it a fix. Range weapon that people can walk (literally walk) and dodge was completely silly.
I hope that still isn’t the case. 30% sounds like a lot but 30% of slow might still be slow.

What people hate is ranger weren’t good at all for dungeons before. Now they may as well come naked it won’t change a thing. In Open World I don’t think it will bother people that much because they chose to play their character. But in a game where you get kicked because you’re not useful, they basically killed the Ranger in Dungeons.
Rangers might still be viable in Spvp and WvW, I don’t know I don’t play either of them, but when Anet said You can play the way you want it’s bullkitten.
I recall in one of the past SoTG video that there was going to be more splits between the modes of play (sPvP/tPvP, WvW and PvE).
I guess that idea went to explicit, as the entire game is be balanced on a explicitastic version of Monarch (apparently the four letter word of a male monarch is censored) of the mountain, with map flavor.

Yup, my whispers armor got nerfed. I can no longer dye the coat from red. The worst part is the daggers on the boots, are stuck red also, which just makes them look cheezy. Did the other order armor have this patched too?
Rangers shortbow is nerfed all 5 skills from 1200 to 900… Thanks Anet I’ve wanted to return GW2 for some time now, and this probably enables me to do so.

ya I can’t believe ranger shortball get nerf to 900 range. Nerfing a weak pve class to balance spvp is kind of sad.
But ranger probably need a nerf for spvp. Just hope the developer find ways to balance both pve and pvp.

They’re called RANGERS for a reason they fight at range.
To range is the act of wandering or roaming over a large area. Fantasy rangers are calls so because of their roaming and vagabond nature not because they use a ranged weapon. The most famous (and perhaps first) ranger wielded a greatsword. Perhaps the second most famous ranger wields 2 scimitars (though he sometimes has a bow)
Good that my ranger was level 15, time to delete it.
They’re called RANGERS for a reason they fight at range.
Actually that’s not what Ranger means.
True … I believe the origin in the term comes to play in their tendency to “range” far and wide, much along the same lines that Aragorn was called “Strider” … but, not to belittle the point, it has become almost cliched that a ranger in any fantasy-set game is going to use a bow and have a pet.

The coat use to have 4 color options, now it only has 3. The boots use to have 3, now only have 2.
I have no idea what the intend was behind the slew of Guardian buffs (with zero negative changes whatsoever no less), they’re already dominant in both forms of PvP and in PvE. Granting them more healing (???), more stun breaks and more damage is just utterly baffling to me.
No guardian can get any of those in the current “dominant” builds.
like they said they wanted to give more options. Worked perfect for guardians.
Every skill buffed is one not currently used often if ever. and the trait line buffed was Zeal the most underused guardian trait line. You should be asking for your class to be brought up to guardian level, good DPS, good support, decent control. It really is where every class should be in all forms of the game. Explains why they had the least changes
Rangers are being hysterical and reactionary. The changes are in the right direction. Longbow buffs with more clearly defined roles for each bow type. Shortbow will still be very playable. Pet nerfs aren’t a big deal because pets have always represented too much of a ranger’s power.
The problem is that rangers have kittenty dps and the thing that represents their dps got nerfed. If they had passed on the dps to the ranger, it would have made sense. As for the shortbow, I actually like the fact that the shortbow is now actually a shortbow and not a better longbow. But they should have buffed up the longbow speed and dps to reflect that.
But I don’t activily play a long bow/shortbow so it doesn’t affect me at all.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
AOE looting – can’t wait to try it out. Never too fond of tons of changes to professions, especially when it smells “PvP” change. But that’s just me and I’ll see how it will play out – hopefully tonight.

… That isn’t why they’re called Rangers. Ranger refers to someone who roams ranges of land. I.e. a nomad, or a sentinel, or a warden. In most fantasy settings, rangers are mobile skirmishers who are adept at both melee and range.
