Hello to all.

I finally racked up some courage to post a discussion of what I think would be a nice addition to Gw2. I know that not everyone will agree on this, but I would like some feedback of what you think.

First of all, I think that would be great to have some peaceful things to do in Gw2 rather than the usual heroic activity in Pve. For example, fishing or farming. Fishing doesn’t have to be a big deal or even have its own recipe in Cooking and all. It could be something as simple as catching a fish for some small exp, eat it or sell it for 2 coppers each. Possibly, you can make a camp fire from wood gathered from a sapling and fry up your catches to share with your friends. In addition to this, it could be a good way to obtain materials like Scales or Blood, rather than fighting or buying from the BLT. Don’t get me wrong, the BLT is great. But it would be nice to completely be able to obtain materials through other activities rather than just combat or purchase.

The Farm idea was encouraged because I saw that there are ways to obtain metal, gems, food, and even wood outside of combat. But there wasn’t any way to obtain leather, cloth scrapes, or some materials like scales. I think it would be nice to have a farm where you can raise animals (for milk, eggs, and leather) or grow cotton plants where then you can obtain these materials while having a side activity to do. Maybe even use the milk to make butter, to save from buying or having to find it. I love being heroic and protecting a village or saving other ppl, whether its an NPC or a real player. But sometimes, I would to be able to kick off the metal boots and do something peaceful and relaxing. These farm areas does not have to be in a separate zone from the community. It could be an open farm out in the middle of Queensdale that could get attack and cause you to lose your livestock or crops. It could be set out for anyone to use at a price and at the usage of their own tools.

I know that there may be the concern of hurting the economy in the BLT. But wouldn’t you agree that it would be nice to have more things to do, rather than making a few extra silvers on the BLT? I am a Guardian with an empty wallet that have been so since beta (I cook a lot). To me, it was the adventure that counted, no so much the money that I made.

I know that these things may sound useless and even boring, but I believe that it would be a great addition because it is the little things that makes something great. For example, in the recent Zelda: A link between worlds, when Link moves towards an apple on the floor, you would see him reach for the apple and put it into his mouth. That little detail was not necessary because the apple was the same as a heart and simply filled up one of your missing hearts. But by adding that, Link became more alive and players could feel more encouraged to find more apples.

Please do give me some feedback of what you think.

I love this idea!

It adds depth and gives players more reason to be in game. I don’t have a clue if Anet would actually do something like this but it would be great if they did. In fact all that plus housing would completely make GW2 the greatest game I’ve ever played.

I would LOVE to see fishing added. I usually only WvW but if fishing was added to the game I would be exploring everywhere trying to find fishing holes with the best scenery. Maybe we could fish up rare miniatures or crafting ingredients or lockboxes.

Fishing in-game is pretty awesome – I’m thinking back to SWG (Sorry) where we grabbed a fishing pole and sat at a dock for a few minutes. It was a mini-game within itself. There are lots of lakes/water access in GW2 that can be fully utilized in my opinion for something like this.

Bravo OP! I actually just made a post in one of the Blix threads stating that killing is a design issue. You so eloquently defined it as “heroic activity” but, the wholesale slaughtering we do in game isn’t very heroic. I’d like to see something more productive like fishing, farming, and even building. I had hoped crafting would get expanded outside of standing in front of a station but, it hasn’t yet.

Let’s hope the dev’s catch on that some players would like more from the game.

Fishing sounds like a great idea. I know people don’t like to compare games, but WoW’s fishing activity was silly fun. I spent hours at times, looking for that one rare fish, being surprised by the kinds of junk you can fish out of a pond, or even just collecting fishing poles. But it really doesn’t have to be all that in-depth, just a thing to do on a lazy day.

I do hope one day they will implement relaxing activities. They do already have minigames (Belchers Bluff, Crabtoss, etc) but personally I feel they could use some more “oomph”. Perhaps permanent rewards? Trophies you can decorate your Home Instance with or even special things to unlock. I really was hoping the Home Instance was more of a home when it launched, but there is always room for addition on their part. I would really like to see a few things in the way of more relaxing activities. Farming and fishing are also on the top of my list, as well as more customization options for the home instance. I may be wrong (I hope I’m not!), but it seems they are slowly inching their way to home instance conveniences such as the personal nodes you can put in. Hopefully this opens doors to more options as mentioned.

It’s funny you should bring this topic up, I was going to make one myself.

I just recently started playing Rift. I heard about that game right here on the forum and being free to play i thought i’d give it a try.

Tbh, the general gameplay is nothing special and questing and leveling is pretty boring. Just your typical fetch/kill x quests and not much of a story to be had.

But

They have fishing and if it wasn’t for that, I would have given the game away already. Irl, I’m not much into fishing, but for some reason in this game, I really like it. In fact, i find myself spending most of my time in Rift fishing and I think it’s b/c the fishing in this game actually has some meaning, but also b/c like you, i’m getting tired of constant fighting and this type of activity definitely provides a nice, relaxing change of pace.

They have these fish exchange quests where they want you to catch a particular type of fish and some of them are really hard to catch without the right lure, which you can make yourself from the fish you catch.

Each zone has different types of fish and daily quests. Not just fishing quests either. In the main cities they offer all kinds of crafting quests, including cooking and some require the fish you catch. A typical quest entails you making some food and delivering it to a quartermaster on the front line, or to the expert/master chef to prove your prowess in cooking and angling.

Typical reward for these quests (aside from some exp) you get a chest that may contain, crafting mats, recipes, reputation scrolls for that particular area, items for your house and crafting tokens with which you can buy more recipes. So as you can see it’s quite an in-depth system and all connected.

What i also like is that you often catch sunken treasure chests that may contain similar stuff as the rewards mentioned above. You can also fish out artifacts and trophies, which are collectable items stored in a type of a valet and once you get a full set you’re awarded with a lucky coin. I’m still not sure what those are for lol, as i haven’t completed many sets.

So yes. I totally agree with you. GW2 could greatly benefit from such an activity if it is well done, especially when you consider all those marvelous waterways we have in this game.

I took a long break from GW2 a while back and went to play other games because I got tired of all the combat-related activities in the game. I love the combat and it’s really active, but I do agree that there need to be more thing for players to do to just chillax. I have always hated the idea of fishing and other secondary skills in other games because it seemed so boring to me, but playing GW2 opened my eyes to how necessary the secondary content is to make the main content more enjoyable.

I never thought I’d ever say this, but I’d love to have stuff like fishing in GW2 lol.

Boss fish fishing. Catching to net. Dragging to beach. Group event. Hmm… players would need to encircle the boss fish and the game would create the fishnet if players are encircling enough. Or, at begin, the players go inside a blue circle and the game joins the players with lines (the netfish): first players need to fold open the net, then encircle the boss fish, then revive fallen allies because they would stop the net segments from moving.

It is the little things in a RPG that tend to make them more enjoyable and immersive.

During the Winter event I tried the bell game out. During that event, I spent at least 1/3 of my in game time going back to that event and playing it. I did not play it, because of the loot (which mainly consisted of somebody’s socks). I did it, because it was fun. It was a game I could play to escape the terrible dungeon group I just played with or my seven game losing streak in PvP. I even bought the unbreakable version of the bell at the hyped price when the event was over.

Is it what drew me to the game? No. If that was it I’d just play Guitar Hero.
Is it what keeps me in the game? Yes. Even after stressful moments with PUGs I will pull the bell out and play with it.

I think fishing would be a great addition because it -could- be a pass time that keeps people in game, but that is only if it is made interesting enough to keep someone’s attention. If Anet were to pursue this, I hope they make it a tad more interesting than just casting a pole and clicking the bobber when a fish was on the line.

things like this work great in a sandbox kinda game (Eve or UO come to mind), but I am not sure if they can be implemented into a combat centered theme park MMORPG in a way that would make you feel like making a difference or having any importance to the world.

I think the OP specifically meant for this to be something to do aside from all the “heroic” stuff, so it does not really matter if it is not that important to Tyria at large. I am not sure if I would engage in this kind of thing, that would probably depend on how it is implemented, but it couldn’t harm the game either. Besides, catching a 1m fish would make me feel heroic, personally.

I am in favor of all this. I think adding building might be easier than you may think. I am sure the coding would need to be altered in many ways, but the idea of building siege weapons in WvW can be applied to building homes or other things. Create a woodworker craft that creates blueprints. Players can create/purchase blueprints, “equip them” like the siege, and place them where you choose, and continue to build with supplies you farmed (wood).

Edit: Also, considering this -is- Guild Wars, guild housing to include a large plot of land (instanced) that guild members can collect supplies (Wood, Ore) and deposit them into a guild housing bank. Officers and GM’s can then take that material and build castle walls etc, much like WvW walls, gates, etc. Would create a tighter community within the guild, everyone working together and putting in suggestions of what to build next. possible new guild ranks for the guild based like contractor, someone that expresses the interest to build and upkeep your castle within the guild.

mostly no mobs at all.

I like this idea. Too many MMOs offer large world, but the only way to interact with them is through violent activity. Can we have dynamic events that involve diplomacy, for example; instead of bring our weapons out. Events that require playing strategic mini-games, or sleuthing out a criminal for authorities to arrest.

I’m not opposed to combat, but games sometimes lack imagination when it comes to giving players tools with which to interact inside their virtual worlds and default to violence… maybe because it’s easier to design.

I’d love to see crafting quests. Each of the Orders needs stuff, and Evon can’t fill all the orders. It’s up to you to fill orders for the Orders!

Or something doofy like that.

The game could generate the dailies based on trading post supply, just to help get ride of a few.
“We need 5 Strong Iron Warhorn of the Pack” or something equally transparent.
It would get materials off the trading post and give us something to do with them besides vendoring and Mystic Forge flushing.

Many alts; handle it!

I asked for fishing the second month of this game. You know what I got? People attacking me saying that I was being too demanding. Every game I’ve played has had some form of fishing.

I’ve asked for tournaments, achievements, props, poles we can craft, nets, boats, clothing, (all craftable or from rewards) rafts, places in the world that have flotsam from shipwrecks to fish up items that are valuable, special fish (like in another game I used to fish up a fish called Vendorfish it was a grey and gave lots of gold), special fishing only recipes with better bonuses than standard cooking. When I asked for backpacks (like the umpteen million times I have in the suggestions folder before it was tossed out) I asked for job related backpacks like the fisherman’s pack. (I asked for alot more than that but it was 1 example).

I would so love to farm as well. I love your idea these things aren’t new no but people expect them in games as beautiful as GW2 because some of us actually login to these environments to relax and this kind of activity is relaxing to me as well! I can’t tell you the number of beautiful places I’d love to fish or even plant a house with a farm.

I love the entire thing! I really do we need housing, farms and fishing in this game. I’d love some carnival things too with rewards like a currency to turn in for pets or even special ranger pets. This game just isn’t casual…. people keep saying that but it’s just not until they add these things it will remain unfinished from the perspective of many of us who’ve played well fleshed out titles that were fleshed out into their second year which means this game is behind in the sense that it hardly has lasting potential and it hasn’t had enough major updates to bring it into modern times. It would flesh out the world so much if these things were added.

It sounds weird to bring up this game but I think they did an amazing job in it when it comes to side activities: Runescape.
There were those awesome crazy minigames which were diverse and fun to do with food rewards. Next to that there were random things like stars landing on the ground so you could mine them and stuff.

This is one of the major things I miss in gw2. So yes, please work on this.

There is quite a bit of non-violent things you can do in-game already. Most of the hearts have a task option that doesn’t require combat. There are quite a few events too.

I once had a challenge idea to try to get to level 80 without using a weapon, but all the experience items we’ve received lately make that kind of pointless.

Love this idea. Id really like to see a fish collection too. I think it would justify adding fishing a little more as it adds a form of horizontal progression and gives those who enjoy completing goals something to do.

Id like a bug collection too where players obtain a unique jar like the one in the bug catching heart in diessa plateau, that unlocks the collection, then the player can go around scooping the ambient fireflies ect in the world.

I think farming would fit better into player housing. If they gave us a few options of customizing where we place the nodes we receive from achievement metas or gem store we could have a nice little garden.

Back in the days when I played WOW, a bunch of players like myself who got tired of the usual go kill some monster, get reward grind decided to hold some of our own activities.
One was a race across the world from one starting point to the end point, and you had to go thru some pretty bad areas., ir areas much higher in level than you.
The catch was that all the entrants in the race had to be LV 1 chars, and whoever got to the end first won, and the prize was the sum of the race entry fee, which was paid to the race orgamizer.
At the end , the organizer paid the winner.
So the idea was you created a LV 1 char, headed for the start, and then started running.
If there was no winner, the prize jackpoted to the next race.
Think this would catch on in GW2.

I didn’t care for the PvP action in ArcheAge at all, but I miss the fishing. Going out onto the sea on my clipper or my rowboat, and fishing there, listening to the waves and watching the sun set in the horizon… Man, that was so nice.

Also, it was nice to know that, as peaceful an activity as it was, there was a Kraken in the ocean, so there was also a slight restless undercurrent to the activity. Sure, I got killed a few times and my boat turned into splinters by the Kraken, but it was rare enough that it didn’t make the activity less tranquil.

That game got many, many things wrong, but the ocean and the sea monster thing they got bang-on.

I suggested Fishing and Digging as additional new Gathering Jobs already years ago…

Its nice to see, that these things like especially Fishing seem to find now slowly their way more to the minds of alot of other players as I see lately alot more oftenly people talking and suggesting about it, when basically there seemed some years earlier no interest about it to exist at all when I suggested these things for the first time.

But theres alot more things we could have, than just only Fishing and Digging as new Gathering Jobs to get more peaceful things to do in this game.

Besides of

1) Fishing

2) Digging

we have also the options left of

3) Gardening/ Personal Housing

4) Alchemy (Combining things like Food, Potions and other Things together to create this way other new things after a while if Mixing and gettign this way new items out of the result that you can get only through this way – So basicalyl Zomorros, but just with other items and more reliable through Alchemy Recipes as a kind of new peaceful Crafting Job)

5) Mount Breeding
Breed your own personal unique everlasting Mounts if you just don’t want to rent some from NPCs for a temporary time usage.

6) Ship/ Airship Building
As kind of longterm goal you can make a Ship/ Airship Craftsman for futurous Sea Content to come (Naval PVP Battles, Sea Travel on new maps that mostly have only water and consists of Water/Underwater Content – 1 Ship possible per map instance per 50 Players, ships simply have only the advantage of moving alot faster, than swimming) or build an Airship and become this way able to travel anywhere where you want, without having ever to pay again Waypoints and invite up to xx people to fly with you.

7) Painter
Another Craftign Job, that could be focused alot more on craftign all kinds of Colors (including also with timegated rare chances of Gemstore Colors) which could become the craftign job that becomes able to recolor Weapons for us and which can create for Guild Halls/ pesonal Housing also Paintings and Portraits of Characters, which can design also unique Guild Banner Emblems

8.) Enchanting
Using your Runes, Gemstones and Sigils to create Ascended Versions of them that are acountbound unlocking versions with that you can unlock for your account permanently their effects for PvE/WvW so that you can use these upgrade effects whenever you want/need at will by enchanting your equipment with the upgrade effects that you have unlocked, so that you can change the upgrade effects on your equipment whenever you want outside of combat.
Anet needs to change this, if this game should ever become again more alternative character fridly, this change alone would be such a great quality of life improvement due to maxing quick upgrade changes more accessible, that grinding for legendaries becomes lesser of a enforcement if you want to be more flexible with your builds and becomes actually again something, how legendaries should be – optional and cosmetic. But this change your effects at will is too miuch of a functional advantage over other players in regard of build flexibility in PvE/WvW, what is the very reason, why you can change out without any problemds whenever you want your settigns in PvP. The same things needs to finally exist for PvE/WvW too!! even when just at a slower rate due to having slowly to unlock the things first for your account, like it worked for GW1 before already, where we had to unlock everythign slowly through Balthazar Points for PvP, the same way it shoudl work here for PvE/WvW, but just without grindign points, it should be related to gettign the upgrade objects and turning them into ascended unlock items as that would raise the value of all the upgrades then.

9) Map Exploration (Map Creation/Selling)
As a kind of source of new income for players, players should become able to make “Maps” of regions that they explored to 100% and create useable objects in a time gated way from their 100% explored maps, that they can use then either on alt characters to unlock the exploration of the map region to 100% for them, or sell the made maps to other players, so that they can unlock with them instantly the regions for one of their characters, saving them this way the time to do the maps again/self.

Basically with every 100% map exploration of a region you should receive for free 1 copy of the map region unlocker item and from that point on, you can create copies from that in a time gated way if you do somethign specific on the maps, like Dailies that play on the map to receive somethign from your Daily Business that you can turn into another map copy that you can then either sell or use self for one of your alts to use them to speed up the exploration for your alts…because seriously, who wants to repeat 100% map exploration in this game with like more than a dounzen of characters or so and more??? It becomes quite boring and I think there needs to exist finally a way to speed this process up a bit for those, that have already explored it once to 100%, or for thosae that are too lazy to explore, but more than willing to pay for exploration progress and saving time this way, so you could profitate a bit from those players maybe

10) Adventuring
Simply adding more Adventures in all of Tyria, not just the HoT Maps.
Id like it for exampel if anet would reduce the amount of Heart quests in all of the central Tyria Maps by for example 10% and exchange the removed Heart Quests out by new Adventures that will be for Central Tyria Maps
Now that Gliding is in Central Tyria, it makes in my opinion only sense to brign adventures also to central Tyria and making Map exploration in general a bit easier by reducing this way the total amount of hearts that you need to do..10% isn’t in my opinion too much, if we get therefore a great amoutn of new more fun adventures all over central Tyria

11) Treasure Hunting
I miss the days of GW1, where we could randomly find in maps some burried Treasure Chests. Id like to have that again for all PvE/WvW Maps and Dungeons that you could find daily everywhere personally randomly chests (It are personal treasure chests, so everyone can find them at different locations daily, to prevent online guides telling everybody daily where to find them for the day). these treasure Chests are simply for every single player a personal RNG factor ,for every single map instance, that you could possibly find in the map treasure chests somewhere, so that if you find one, you can consider yourself lucky, especially due to findign in these thigns then really valuable things due to their randomness and due to it beign quite some effort naturally to search a whole map for maybe one (magic “treasure” find could increase the chance that more than 1 spawns for you in the map) of them being generated in it for the day for you

12) Equipment Refinement
Refine your Armors to make them Unbreakable or refine your Weapons in PvE (only) to gain there an additionaly Sigil Slot for them (in case of 2h weapons up to 2 more)

13) Photo Making
Implement a craftable Photo Camera, with that players can make pictures (of others, the environment, themself ect. (inspirational context: Dark Chronicles/ Dark Cloud 2)
Simply a tool, that allows us to make easer and better pictures in the game, without havign to permanently remove the UI manually first and that adds also some simple tools with that we can make the pictures look better.
Could be also included with a Picture Collection Achievement, that requires of you to make of specific things photos of in the game, like you had to do in DC2 to make also of vey specific things photos (in this case to get inspirations for new invention ideas)

14) Mini Games
More of them, I want a kind of Terra Battle similar Monster Collection Card Game as new form of Polymok for example ^^ That would be awesome, inclousive with its own Tournaments, a kind of Pvp, finally, where not muscles, but BRAWN decides over it, who wins.
That is exactly in the mind of all Asuras, thats why it has to become a reworked Polymok!!

15) Teaching (ok thats not so peaceful, but a community thing and I wanted just 15 points complete xD)

I think the Mentor System isn’t fully using its potential. I think it should become possible, to become also an others players “Personal Mentor” of Class , so that if they play with us together in a Party, we can “teach” them, so that they receive a significant EP bonus while they play with us together and they can gain Central Tyria Mastery Points, if they pass our “Tests” that we can give them at say every 20 Levels, so maximum 4 Tests for some boost in Mastery Points. Or in case that Pupil is no HoT owner, then instead of Mastery Points, the player receives somethign else, that will be helpful for him on the course of the game, like Equipment appropiate for its level, that is a bit better than stuff that you would usually have on that level for the tests 20,40 and 60, while test 80 grants you simply an exotic weapon of choice or so

Level 20 = Rookie Test
Level 40 = Adept Test
Level 60 = Expert Test
Level 80 = Master Test

Personal Mentoring is also something, that could lead the community to come close,r to get to learn new people/friends maybe this way also when you spent time with others as their Personal Mentors, while mentoring personally other players could be somehow also profitable for the Mentor Self so more people he mentors to the master Test successfully, it could improve their Mentoring Mastery and unlock for them new mentor Features, don’t know, just brainstorming here xD

just 15 points out of my head when thinking about more peaceful things that we should be able to do in this game hopefully in the future ^^

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

I can’t help but feel some of these ideas are taking straight from JAGEX’s Runescape lol. I mean c’mon houses. Firemaking, fishing?

But +1 for fishing however, could be useful I mean we can gather from plants to make food, aswell as animals, why not have preset 3 gather fishing spots for those seafood consumables.

-1 for houses, one of runescape biggest fails. Good fun to waste your money but maybe some customising in the home instance would be a better avenue.
On the fence for firemaking, can’t see its benefits in gw2, in rs it’s used to cook anywhere you want, in gw2 we have no need to eat food for hp. Different story in rs when food is your way to regenerate health.

Oh god no please! >.<
If you want to play a farming/building/boredom simulation you could always play Arch Age. x_X

I did hate fishing in Zelda, I did hate fishing back in Lineage 2 and I will always hate it to death. :C
And as for the other stuff…

I like the idea about the map completion stuff though. Although I’d suggest that these created maps stay accountbound and you’re not able to sell them to other players.
It is part of owning a legendary weapon that you have to complete the worldmap – if you’re too lazy you’ll have to buy the Legy (old ones) or stay away from it for good (new ones) that’s just fair.

But I agree that map completion is a pain to do on alts. Plus, using the item shouldn’t give you any EXP as you didn’t really do anything but to consume something.
And it should cost some money to create that kind of item.

I think adding it as a roleplaying element would be fine.

I don’t think adding it in any other capacity would be though. You shouldn’t get anything tradeable or anything character advancing through the activity. I can see people afk fishing for passive experience right now in my mind… 2/s adds up quicker than it seems esp. when it’s pre-ordained downtime and you actually aren’t “waiting” for it like when people go to work.

I’m usually one to say no to all dumb ideas, but I can’t see any harm in a personal instanced house.
