Please No Profession Loot
The very idea that I have to play a certain class to get a drop I want…. Just wow. Just… wow.
“since we believe that, especially for newer players, good rewards mean things you can play with (and not just things that may happen to valuable on the Trading Post)”
What?
Now I cant play one character when i need equipment for another?
Does Anet want us to have but one character? Seriously?
Actually, there are more ways fairly reliable ways to get cloth (as much as RNG can be considered “reliable”) Much of my cloth I gathered was not due to slavaging. Bags, salvagable cloth item (i.e worn garment, rag, etc.) map completion actually gives quite a bit, and karma can be used to get cloth
Eitherway, as stated before, we don’t know if this applies to level 80, or to armor drops. The blog specifially talks about weapons, and leveling. Of course we can infer that it will effect armor, but until we get a clear answer, or see it in action, everything is a knee jerk reaction and pure speculation.
Please enlighten me on the karma way of getting cloth… btw, I have 7 lvl 80s… and still think its a horrible idea. Conceptually, it shows their lack of knowledge on the game and its truly concerning.
Buy cloth items with karma, throw them in mystic forge, salvage results. Boring and tedious.
yup. Its is boring and tedious, but generates a decent amount of cloth.I found crab grabbing gloves to be the best for linen. They are cheap.
Yes I buy those as well, but not so often. I still have millions of karma but doing the mystic forge method is so boring I want to cry. I wish we could just salvage the initial item and not have to convert it. I know it would hurt prices but they need to be hurt, just too expensive now.
Can white items bought from vendors be put in the forge?
I have never tried, though I would imagine not.
This is actually a change people have been wanting for ages.
Remember all those threads about people on getting fractal bows with no characters that can use them?
There is some good in it. Maybe you should enjoy the Mithril lining s little.

Okay. I remember buying a bunch of white items to salvage, only to find they couldn’t be salvaged. Had I been more experienced with the game, I would’ve put them in the forge.
They won’t get mega paid, if anything the price of cloth will drop to be inline with leather and mithril (as cloth users will get their own cloth now and not have to buy). Look at the disparity in costs with crafting cloth ascended versus leather or plate, its silly high. I hope this change will balance it.
This argumentation ignores the current ascended recipes:
- Crafting Light Armor need mostly clothes and a bit leather.
- Crafting Medium Armor needs mostly clothes and a bit leather.
- Crafting Heavy Armor needs mostly clothes and a bit steel.
Everyone needs mostly clothes to build his armor, but only cloth-weares get it.

Branden Gee post only confirms my concerns… they do not have a clue about their game. I’m sorry for Branden but if he is a developer and needs to spend time coding and training then its not his job to think. The game designer (not the developer) should be the person 20 hours a day inside GW2 to understand the game and not let decisions like go through. This is not the first time ANet toss something out that shows their lack of knowledge on the game.
And this shows that you know nothing about development. Good developers are constantly honing their skills. Languages are constantly improving and good devs have to keep up with that to remain relevent. I work for a company that just hit 300 people, of which more than 80% are developers – Java, .Net, PHP, etc. The higher level devs, the seniors and leads, are always working on something, always looking at the new technologies, checking out the advancements in their languages and in others to see how they might be applied to their own projects in a beneficial way.
You post makes no sense and you actually says the same I said… (and I already programmed my first video game and working as a game designer for my second one though I don’t need to give you any info about, just letting you know im not randomly saying this) if he has to do all that, then he should not be the one proposing changes. The game designer should be the one behind the changes, not him. I don’t even know if he is the one who proposed it but in any case, devs to code, designer to design… and this game has very good devs but very bad designers.
I think part of the disconnect here is the terms “developer” “designer” and “programmer”.
While the devs (developers) do work on the programming aspect, a designated programmer (i.e. Branden Gee) wouldn’t have much, if any, input into the design, but would specialize on one aspect of the game (i.e jumping/dodging mechanics, aggro distance from mobs, event spawn timers and areas, etc.) and the designers would be the ones who come up with the ideas.

Yes but it is the quantities that matter, the non clothies need far less cloth. I have crafted all 3 types of ascended and the difference in cost is huge.

“very little” meaning 7,500 silk scraps, 1000 linen scraps, 1000 wool scraps, and 500 cotton scraps.
You have a very odd definition of “very little”
I get about 100 silk a day, playing 3 hours a day. that is 75 days of playing just for the silk under current conditions. Imagine if you can’t get silk drops… it could take you a full year to get enough silk.

Light Armor needs 36 damask and Heavy Armor needs 25 damask. According to GW2spidy it costs 60 gold for heavy Zojja’s Warfists vs 67 gold for light Zojja’s Wristguards. While that is a significant cost increase, I don’t think it means heavy armor wearers need a nerf in the amount of silk they get. I stand by the idea it should be optional.

I think the cloth armor requires about 33 percent more, which is considerable.

In conclusion: Heavy armor players strongly depends on cloth more than metal to build their ultimate armor (?) considering ascended as the current ultimate armor. Changing the game in a way that won’t let heavy armor players get said material its not a good idea from any point of view.
This is a good change people… it will allow people to SPECIFICALLY TARGET CLOTH as a drop now.
Being able to SPECIFICALLY TARGET CLOTH will cause overall supply to INCREASE.
An overall INCREASE in supply will result in LOWER PRICES.
LOWER PRICES means that even though the number of silk scraps you get on your Guardian is less, you are now able to afford to BUY LOTS MORE SILK than before (or play on an ALT).
I don’t think it is possible to explain this any more clearly.
You may continue complaining after this point, just be aware that it only makes you look silly.

They can buy it! Hopefully it will result in the price of the metals they get to rise in value as well, giving them a source of income(since clothies won’t flood the market with it now). I don’t want to see any player hurt, but think in the long run it will beneficial. It is odd though that plate crafting would require so much cloth, that should be addressed.

That also means that light armor classes (Elementalist, Necromancer and Mesmer) will be more profitable to farm. The problem is the inequality in drops.
It’s for low levels only no?
They should announced the ability to harvest silk/linen and etc in some manner before making this announcement, I guess.
So we are assuming that as a heavy, you will not ever get medium or light armor drops in order to salvage for cloth. The blog states that you will still get those types of drops, but not as often. More often then not I, as a heavy, get light and medium armor drops then heavy with the current system. We also don’t know if cloth will be made available as salvaging results regardless of the armor type. Which would make sense, as you need cloth to craft it. I just can’t imagine that such a thing as limiting which profession can obtain materials would not have been addressed and already taken care of.

it may be they find it acceptable, there are advantages to the system, the big problem imo, is that they try to simplify it by hardwiring it, when it should be selectable.
Seems like a great change. I’d sympathize with people who dont have any light armor alts but I dont really care since it makes up for light armor costing more to make in the first place, even if its only a small & more. Besides it will be great to actually get weapons you can use, especially for precursors (if youre one of the .1% of people who actually gets one to drop)
If people want to be mad at anything be mad at the dev who decided to make it cost 300 silk scraps per refine while it only costs 50 mithril. That or everyone just roll eles already.

Light Armor needs 36 damask and Heavy Armor needs 25 damask.
Additionally BOTH need 18 damask for the 6 insignia.
So it’s 54 damask vs 43 damask in total, roughly 20% more costs
According to the wiki the original numbers included the cost of the insignia. As well, you only need three bolts of Damask for the insignia, not six.
Yes your right (18+18 = 36). But you got me wrong in the other aspect: 6 insignia each 3 damask.
Hang on, people need help levelling?
Space Marine Z [GLTY]
Unless I’m completely mistaken, this only applies to characters who are at less than level 80 and mostly to weapons… why the big snit over cloth?

Sorry, I read your original post wrong. I read it as you need 6 damask for 3 insignias.

Because the article didn’t say it would only affect sub 80s, so it’s assumed it affects everyone. This could all be a miscommunication, but we haven’t received a response clarifying.
it’s only for leveling….
Not it’s not.
You sure about that? …
“It’s still possible for a warrior to get a new staff to sell or for mesmers to find a rare rifle, but it’ll be a bit less common than it was before. We’d rather that leveling players found things that felt like an immediate and useful upgrade or gave them a look at a new weapon and a chance to expand their skill set, and this seems like a good way of doing that.”
Seems to me ANet says different.
Peace.

Find me where it says that level 80 players aren’t affected by these changes.

Look at it this way, A guardian has less of a chance of getting silk…but you have MORE of a chance of getting DUSK!
I main an engineer. At least half of my play is on either my main or one of my alt engies. Exactly what have I got to look forward to here? Rifles, pistols, and shields aren’t “high-value” rares, like hammers, swords, greatswords, staves, and daggers, and salvaging my profession’s armor yields cheap-as-dirt leather.
Not to mention, just for kittens and giggles, they decided to add more back pieces that get obstructed by my profession’s main mechanic, once again ignoring 2-year-old threads on our forum asking for simple changes to that and to legendary effects for our profession.

My question is, will what comes out of salvages change? If anything, since heavy armor, to craft it, requires both cloth and metal, why not have the armor when salvage have a change for both metal or cloth now instead of just metals?

In that context especially could mean veteran players who have sub level 80 characters and especially newer players.
That said, of course everyone will be affected because non level 80’s get drops, salvage for materials, etc use the TP too.
profession loot only for low lvl players , this system on endgame is really bad idea nobody cares about stuff people just salvage it .

Ignoring sections of the news post does not prove your point.
Read my (and your) quote above. I’ve added emphasis (in bold) to help.
When is a level 80 character a “new player” or a “leveling player?” They aren’t. Yet you refuse to take note of what ANet is saying and instead are trying to substitute your take on things.
Calm down a bit.
Peace.
Honestly I really don’t like this idea. Diablo ran a similar type of system and I ended up getting the same armor everyday. Also I love to run my MM and I like being able to still be able to find gear for my guardian or Mesmer when running with my MM. Obviously these are personal reasons and don’t know if anyone agrees but these are my general concerns with this feature.
(edited by Zoso.8279)
@Castrin.8972 I’ll say it a second time. Find me where they said it won’t affect level 80 players and I’ll personally ask a moderator to close this thread and issue an apology to everyone I have mislead. All you’ve proven is that it will affect leveling players, you have not proven it won’t affect level 80 players..
It’s for low levels only no?
Thats for the “New Leveling Items” only.
For “Profession Loot”, level wasn’t mentioned.
I HOPE profession loot will only apply to characters lvl 79 and lower.
Try maining something other than auto tagging guardian or warrior, and those complaining will quickly realise light armor classes get a lot less loot anyway, so there is no advantage gained, just less loss if we get more silk from our far fewer drops.
Staff necromancer has no problems with tagging, mate. Worst case? Plague. ;D

Uh, maybe you should try playing those other classes? Eles and necros get just as much loot, if not more because they don’t have to run around to spam a 600 range aoe.
That would be 1200 range aoe.
William S. Burroughs
That would be 1200 range aoe.
guard staff spam is 600 range, so they have to move around to tag. eles/necros can just stand there.
Sorry, misunderstood you there. A long day.

I am all for this idea of profession loot.
It doesn’t matter what weight class I’m playing, I get 80% medium armor (leathers), 15% heavy armor (metals) and 5% light armor (cloth).
And in order to make ALL armors you need cloth which drops the LEAST.
This will be good. Maybe not for the TP flippers when it comes to cloth, but good for everyone else.
Lady Alexis Hawk – Main – Necromancer
Ravion Hawk – Warrior
This is pretty poorly thought out if it affects level 80s, like I suspect (“too hard to go beyond most basic of programming”). My main being an engineer, I’ll be limited to pistols, rifles and shields with regards to likely drops. Personally I enjoy the variety of potential drops, which would get pretty bland if it were to be nothing but these items. Also, players will be limited in their ability to outfit their other characters with drops from their main, who are likely fully outfitted already. This isn’t even thinking about the possible financial viability of certain classes over others.
At this preliminary look, Elementalist seems to be the best choice, BUT when I get home after classes I can check the tp and compare the actual base prices of every weapon and make a more educated decision.
Went through and took down the starting selling price for rares on the TP. Compiled results:

Ele: staff 65, scepter 41, dagger 66, focus 40, trident 40 /5 = 50.4 silver average (close second)
Necro: Staff 65, Scepter 41, axe 43, dagger 66, focus 40, warhorn 40, spear 41, trident 40 /8 weapon types = 47 silver average
Mid-tier metal wearers:

Dirt-tier leather wearers:
Thief: dagger 66, shortbow 47, pistol 43, sword 71, spear 41, speargun 41 /6 = 51.5 silver average (congrats thief, you’re the best of the worst)
Ranger: greatsword 79, longbow 44, shortbow 47, sword 71, axe 43, dagger 66, torch 40, warhorn 40, speargun 41, spear 41 /10 = 51.2
Engie: Rifle 41, pistol 43, shield 41, speargun 41 /4 weapon types = 41.5 silver average (Engie gets it in the shorts once again)
Worth noting that these are based on the starting selling prices of the hour, so not entirely precise. It also makes the assumption that exotics will scale up the same in value.
TL;DR: After patch, best class to farm with will be Mesmers and Elementalists, meanwhile Engie is by far the worst off (what else is new).

War: Hammer 48, Greatsword 79, Longbow 44, Rifle 41, Axe 43, sword 71, mace 40, shield 41, warhorn 40, speargun 41, spear 41 /11 weapon types = 48.1 silver average
TL;DR: After patch, best class to farm with will be Mesmers and Elementalists, meanwhile Engie is by far the worst off (what else is new).
weapon wise, its all pretty close except for engi.
You nor I can “prove” anything, it’s all what we think they are saying.
You believe that a “new player” and/or “leveling player” includes those with characters at level 80.
I do not.
Time will tell which is the correct translation but either way I wish you luck.
Peace.
Hang on, people need help levelling?
Call it extra convenience. When I levelled my character, most of the drops I get are weapons that my class is not compatible with making the buying of the item I need in the TP the more viable option.
profession loot is probably ok, only if the mats needed to craft your weapon/armor are
heavy – iron and stuff
med – leather and stuff
light – cloth and stuff
i think it would be ok.
