Please Remove Map Completion from PvP Areas
Then just don’t.
I’m sure there are a ton of WvW players who would love for the PvE parts of map completion to be removed because they find map completion in PvE modes to be tedious and a “royal pain in the kitten.” Yet you don’t find them on here creating threads to ask for that. Because they get that the PvE’ers have to go in and take a spot on the map to get their map completion. A spot that during peak times a person who wishes to play WvW could be taking.
You have 2 tedious and pain in the kitten maps to complete. WvW players who hate PvE maps have how many?
Well, tbh, a lot of map completionists dont understand this one thing, wvw is not a solo game. Join a group/commander and take objectives, and you will get most of the things you need in a couple of days, maybe in a server that doesnt do well you have to wait for colours to rotate… But wvw map completion isn’t supposed to be like regular map completion, so removing other borderlands or eb makes no sense, where is the challenge if you just visit places you own? Objective of wvw is to take objectives.
The problem I have with your reasoning is that map completion is a personal achievement. What sense does it make to need a group in order to obtain a personal achievement? That’s like gathering 30 people to help you pick out a new car.

I did WvW maps 99.9% solo. It was not 100% because I saw map chat pop up that they were headed to take a place I needed. I never once asked for help. It’s possible to do solo. It just takes a lot more patience to do so.
I’ve map completed WvW twice when I was mainly doing PvE in the worst populated server in Eredon Terrace. I had little to no difficulty. All I had to do was press B, look at what we had conquered and hopped to the WvW map. It was NO effort to do.
Press B every 30 mins or so and you will get map completion in no time. I’m sure WvWers have similar gripes in being forced to do PvE content like dungeons to earn their legendaries and map completing all the PvE maps.

Unless you took down all the gates, defeated all the champions and capped the locations all on your own, I would argue that you didn’t do it solo. Your path had to be cleared by other players. I’m fine with that from a pvp perspective but, again, map completion is a personal reward. You shouldn’t need others to gain a personal reward.
I could get on board with this because quite frankly, I have yet to really touch WvW (unless you count EotM karma train) and I feel like I’m wasting a map slot to do my mapping, when I have no interest at the time in doing actual WvW content. It’s not like the mapping in there is even WvW content – it’s just PvE mapping in an instance, with a few blockades based on who controls what.
So really, it’s not that I don’t want to WvW (cause I can easily avoid that anyway). It’s that I don’t want to get in the way of serious WvW, just so that I can do my PvE crap. Every time I step in there to map complete, I feel like a spectator walking onto an NBA basketball court to pick daisies.

It’s an MMO. By definition it’s a multiplayer game. You shouldn’t expect all aspects of the game to cater to solo players, heck you shouldn’t expect many aspects to. There will be things that require others to complete.
That said, they should add two new map completion achievements. Turn the current one into the achievements like the Meta tracking achievement for LS season 1. The two new ones should be PvE map exploration and WvW map exploration. And each should give a title. Mists Explorer for WvW and Cartographer for PvE maybe? With Been There, Done That for the ones who complete both as it is now.
The Gifts of Exploration come after both PvE and WvW ones are done (to not remove the only part of making a legendary that forces players to do more than pop into WvW to talk with a NPC).
That way players who do not wish to go into WvW don’t have to sit at 96% map completion. And WvW players who don’t feel like doing PvE map completion can at least get one map completion title. And have proof they have done it

I do REALLY like this idea.
I should say, I don’t really have much of an issue with the current system. I’m four Vistas and two PoI’s away from getting BT,DT (both in WvW). But, I understand it for what it is, a completely optional task.
However, I do think splitting it into two (or more) separate achievements makes a lot more sense. We already have “Explorer” achievements for every major area (Kryta, Ascalon, Maguuma, Shiverpeak, and Orr), so I can see this interlocking with those perfectly.
Mechanist Gregory [BEER]
Arondight Unfading [ZB]
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. World completion should have been divided.
You should have had Tyria completion as one achievement, mists completion as another achievement and if you get the both, you get an achievement called Master Mapper or Grand Master Cartographer (as in guild wars 1) or something else. I’d still make the gifts of the explorer available only to those who get the comboed title though. But I’d give different rewards for people who got the other two.
I too am annoyed at this also, I feel forced into a game mechanic I am not either ready for or desire to be apart of, the problem with dividing the title is PvP’ers will just make a toon grind the map for the rewards [delete] redo, that is why we have to complete the PvE world I’d hazard a guess its a deterrent for that sort of silly behavior going on.
So I propose we think outside of the box; ArenaNet want to show case there game mechanic clearly that is why they did it too FORCE people into that area of the game that want 100% MC, so lets think outside of the box.
I propose that we have a ‘spectator mode’, during spectator mode your invisible and unable to interact with just about anything that would otherwise be considered playing, the bonus is you can go anywhere either teams base, skill points you’d still have to be playing WvW, no way around that unless you take out the fight challenge skill points but this is unnecessary as none of them are locked behind someones fort color anyway.
You have no idea how frustrating it really is to be walking around the map, attacking nothing, interacting with nothing, just walking a long way from point A to a open POI/Vista or skill point, and to be engaged by some ruffian that thinks your out to do them harm, not even walking around naked to indicate this fact has any effect.
Coincidentally WvW players don’t want us MC players in there either! we take up map places or something I’ve heard.
I’d enjoy WvW a whole lot more if you didn’t force it on me and let me choose to be there of my own free will.
It would be nice if they gave a silver star and a title for doing PvE only and a gold star, the Been There Done That title and the explorer gifts for doing both.
Well, tbh, a lot of map completionists dont understand this one thing, wvw is not a solo game. Although it has taken me “forever,” I am two POIs away from my map completion and it has all been solo. But…and this has made all the difference…I am patient. It is not a major thing for me. I plunk around at it from time to time when the mood strikes. Am currently just waiting the WvW reset that puts my realm in the right place…and I am done.
So, although I am not a PVP person at all, I am okay with this the way it is.

Ok if you think that way consider this: the other people taking these objectives have the same goal and same reward, therefore it is not a personal achievement, it’s not like youre dragging 20 ppl to take a tower for you and they get nothing from it.
And to someone who said its not like they don’t enjoy wvw, they just feel awkward going in to do map completion, please refer to my first post, wvw completion is not supposed to be mapping, youre supposed to be getting it by actually playing wvw normally. I both pve and wvw and usually have most maps done by the time my character gets to level 40 by doing what? – playing wvw… enter map, join commander, have fun for a couple of hours, log off.
I find the most annoying thing to do in wvw map completion to be those pois and skill points in top corner as they are not on the way to anywhere, and serve no purpose, also the 3 different pve camp things in eb, the krait, ogres and whatever it is in the cave.

Well you described it yourself, many of the areas in WvW mapping are not even remotely related to doing WvW, as far as I can tell. So I don’t know how you can say that WvW mapping is “supposed to be” through playing WvW normally. It’s more like, “You can get a significant part of it through playing WvW normally.”
As for those who are suggesting a split, I disagree, unless you have the non-instance stuff still get you Been There Done That and the Gifts, as those are the main reasons for completing everything, other than being OCD about percentages.
WvW is not just zerging it’s also roaming and the POIs which “aren’t related to anything” are on my route when capping camps on borderlands. So it might be completely unrelated to zergs but it isn’t for roamers. And that is usual wvw as well.
I like that world completion gently pushes players to try out new things.
If it was for me, there would be a POI on every PvP map, one in the Fractals room (general area, not the fractals themselves) and in the starter areas for the dungeons.
Some of the WvW ones were a pain to get. I did this together with my boyfriend and it took us a while. It helped that the map colors changed sometimes, so our borderlands were sometimes green, then blue, then red. EB was a total pain though. I would keep WvW in for map completion, but only waypoints and easy-to-reach (i.e. in the garrison) POIs. This way, yes, people would be forced to check out the WvW thingie for 5 minutes, but not take up WvW slots for hours and hours.

Objectives change the colour depending on who holds it. So what helped you were the people on your server who capped the things you needed
Also: Once you get onto a map you haven’t yet discovered you’ll get all way points automatically as all waypoints but the entry have to be build by your team. It would be nonsense when you had to run to discover all of them which might or might not have been build when you get there as you wouldn’t be able to wp there in an “emergency”.
I think we need to make the wvw map completion thingy a bit harder so borderlands aren’t refered to as funny heaps of skittles
Nnnnnooooo…? I had to get the skill points, vistas and POIs on the red, green and blue borderlands. Who held the objectives was irrelevant.
Also I should add, that was in the first year of GW2, before they made the changes in how the borderlands color is assigned to the servers.

[Gives Vayne a cookie] This is a good idea. It should be relatively easy to program, and making more things for people to shoot for in an MMO is never a bad idea.
I kind of understand the idea of “forcing” people to do both PvE and WvW to get a Legendary — but then, I kind of don’t. Supposedly, the Gift of Mastery is intended to signify mastery of the game. However, there is no sPvP requirement. Also, one can purchase a legendary without having done anything in game but farmed Champs for months or whipping out the Amex Black. So much for mastery.
As for those who are suggesting a split, I disagree, unless you have the non-instance stuff still get you Been There Done That and the Gifts, as those are the main reasons for completing everything, other than being OCD about percentages.
Most of us asking for a split here in this thread want 2 new ones ADDED, for a total of 3 map completion achievements. Not simply split the current achievement into 2. At least from what I’ve read.
So there would be PvE Exploration, WvW Exploration, AND PvE + WvW Exploration. The PvE + WvW exploration would be a “achieve 2 achievements from the Map Exploration category” achievement. And only PvE Exploration and WvW Exploration would fall under the Map Exploration category.
The Gifts of Exploration and the Been There, Done That title would be tied to the PvE + WvW Exploration achievement. So that part would not change.

Yea, it’s a measure of someone’s mastery. Just not necessarily the wielder. I wish they had not been made sellable on the TP. I’m personally going for one for the personal satisfaction of making my own. I don’t care if everyone else in the game thinks I farmed or bought gems to get it.

I understand that. I’m saying I disagree with the idea because the Gifts/title are the main reason people go for the whole thing (PvE + WvW). Splitting it alone could add more rewards I guess, but it doesn’t solve the problem of people who are looking for the main rewards and are forced to go into WvW.

I understand that point of view. I also understand the point of view of those who might say, “I did it, others should have to if they want the Gifts.” I can also kind of understand ANet’s mentality. Hopefully, they like the game they produced and want players to experience all of it. There’s also the idea that Legendary was meant to be a long-term goal, so lowering the requirements is contrary to that design intent.
However, I also feel for those who dislike WvW, and especially for those who prefer WvW and hate PvE. These demographics are also customers, and also have the potential to spend money on gems, so denying them that one more thing to shoot for might not be in the games best interest long-term.

No, it wasn’t irrelevant as you can’t enter the objectives held by another colour than your own and I can hardly imagine that it has ever been differently although I haven’t been around in the first year of GW2.
It’s not for the OP since he didn’t suggest to remove ALL WvW completion but: if you’re not patient enough to do WvW map completion, maybe you shouldn’t own a legendary. Those weapons shouldn’t be given (and they shouldn’t be tradable).
The only people who could maybe complain are those stuck on the last servers of the leaderboard, who would get the same server color for months… Then the OP’s suggestion could help.

Which is exactly the position I am in, “Gate of Madness” doesn’t even get a look in most of the time other than it’s own self named map which it mostly owns, now I suppose I could server switch for 1800 gems, and I seriously considered this until I realized that if I in time got all 8 of my toons to map completion I would have to spend 43200 gem server switching I packed that idea in quickly.
I suppose another way around this is each day cycle the map, then I could just stay in the Gate of Madness map and wait for undiscovered points to cycle in.
On the other hand those 3 maps are identical! it should be get it on one you get it on all I guess that could be another solution to the problem.
There really is no reason to require you to complete all three borderlands when they’re literally identical.
I agree with the split idea.
In saying I’m totally noob at WvW but running around getting my map completion there was some of the most fun I’ve ever had and it made the reward of completion feel totally epic and warranted. Did’nt get me into WvW, I’m saving that for when I burn out on PvE. The PvE side is just timesink but the WvW completion was friggin tense. Avoiding zergs, escaping roamers, even getting the odd kill. I loved it.
Yeah your pretty much locked out of a lot of it but I just waited till the servers got switched around and did other stuff in the meantime. Impatience is at fault here me thinks and lessening the effort to garner a rewards always lessens it’s worth once attained.
“Before the reward there must be labor. You plant before you harvest. You sow in tears before you reap joy.”

Well the point is that theyre not identical. They might be visually identical but on each map your base is in a different place and the ‘easy to take’ and ‘hard to take’ objectives are different. Gift of mastery is a complete joke since they started giving badges in ap chests and brought eotm in so thats no longer a wvw requirement at all.
Splitting map completion will not help because that will give you what, maybe 10 or so ap extra for getting the achievements separately but the end goal would still be the title and star for most people so it doesnt solve anything, just artificial reward to say ‘good job you spent hours and hours mapping maps with no challenge’.
About the ‘out of the way pois and skill points’, I love how someone assumes all I do is zerg….. I run small snipe groups a lot and even if you go the long way around to north camp they are still out of the way as i dont pass through them, eb I practically never visit at all after I have the map done there anyway, its just a farmfest. What I was saying is that unlike the rest of the map, which is mainly pois/vistas INSIDE objectives that you get unlocked as you actually do wvw, these extra ones are not particularly relevant to wvw at all.
Also no need to put words in my mouth, I never described these pois/skill points as many, in fact from what I can recall I think its 88%of the map I get done just from doing wvw, when I wake up and notice that Im really close to completing so might as well run to get those last couple of things done. They are not many, just annoying and irrelevant in my opinion, reminds me of doing pve maps which is just so boring.
Here is an idea, make EOTM count as map completion in place of one borderland. This means you can do a borderland or EOTM’s map, though they’d have to add a few thing to make it equal (vista’s or skill points.)
been asking for this for years now simply years. It’s been repeated in these forums as well as in the suggestions forums before that forum became and Archive.
We’ve also been asking for the teleporters on the world map to be discovered across the account because people using their alts should be able to travel much easier than new players joining the game once they’ve completed those areas.
I agree with OP, there’s absolutely no reason to mix PVE and PVP. If they were around during GW1, they would know that players hated this and there was constant bickering about it.
That assumes that your server is active in WvW.
I took advantage of the free server transfer when they had this in the past. Never bothered to map complete another character after that because of the WvW requirement.
(edited by DarkSpirit.7046)
I run small snipe groups a lot and even if you go the long way around to north camp they are still out of the way as i dont pass through them
True, but they’re 20 seconds away, so not completely out of range. There are two ways to get to nord camp on each side I’m almost always chosing the outer one as people in a group don’t do that but I’m running alone. Also true that these pois and SP (on the borderlands) have got nothing to do with wvw unlike the “odd” pois/vistas/SP in EB which are important to wvw in EB.

Your realize that server transfers are account wide right? It’s not per character. You can’t have one toon on GoM and another on JQ, it doesn’t work that way.
you can do all pvp areas within 10 min on each char in 3 weeks.
As the rotation goes on, you can swiftly rush to each poi and Vista/skill easily even as level 2 char.
Most people do not attack low level peeps in wvw maps. Unless they’re trying their luck then sorry, go back to your base and run away.
Once living story season 2 is over, Anet should remove the WvW maps from map completion and Southsun Cove, Dry Top, and whatever the next map they’re adding is. Then WvW map exploration can be given it’s own achievement in the WvW section, unrelated to PvE map completion (and maybe even give one Gift of Exploration, so WvW players don’t have to explore the entire PvE map to craft a legendary weapon).

What about the WvW players that have to explore the PvE map which is ~10x bigger?

Hopefully, they like the game they produced and want players to experience all of it. There’s also the idea that Legendary was meant to be a long-term goal, so lowering the requirements is contrary to that design intent.
However, I also feel for those who dislike WvW, and especially for those who prefer WvW and hate PvE. These demographics are also customers, and also have the potential to spend money on gems, so denying them that one more thing to shoot for might not be in the games best interest long-term.
I’m not suggesting that anything related to the gifts changing.
I’m saying two NEW achievements be added. PvE Exploration and WvW Exploration. They each give their own unique titles. No gifts of exploration.
The current map exploration achievement turns into one like the ls or holiday meta achievements where it was do x achievements in this category. THIS achievement awards the Been There, Done That title and the gifts of exploration. So those aiming to make their own legendary still have to go into WvW.
I haven’t poked my toes in on WvW since I got Been There, Done That, but I remember a long, long period of waiting for SoR to stop sucking long enough to get out of 3rd position. Subsequently, SoR huffed a little deathrattle and dropped in the ranking something fierce, and somewhere in that time, I managed to sneak in for my last 6 little bits.
It’d be a lot better if WvW were more even, since it’s so prone to population hikes. It’s not the server with the better players, just the more populace ones. A more frequent color rotation would be ideal. Though, I think with the way they handle matchups now, with matches based on points gained and activity, it might be a little better.
Can anyone confirm?
Still, I’m not a fan of WvW completion being a part of the 100%. Managed to do it, but it wasn’t a good thing. But at least I don’t have to do Dry Top for 100%! Small victories.

There are PvE skill pts that require help from others, like the ones where a champ is sitting on top of it ; do you want those points omitted from map completion as well? I have map completion on 3 toons and the only toon I didn’t need to ask for help on skill points like those were on my thief bc I stealthed in. What about the temple waypoints/POI/skill pts? Like someone said earlier, gw2 is a MMO, you are supposed to play with others.
The wvw maps actually take less in game play time than the PvE map; you just have to be patient. I have 6/8 toons with 100% map done in wvw, the only 2 not complete are under a month old and I have already grabbed all the poi and vistas that I can, now it’s just a waiting game until the locations that I need are avaliable.

What about the WvW players that have to explore the PvE map which is ~10x bigger?
I don’t understand this actually.
Why would a WvWer who does not want to PvE care about completing the map?
- If they are going for a legendary, then they got bigger PvE woes than exploration.
- If they are going for completionism, then are they asking to have PvE removed all together?
- If they are feeling OCD just because they ran across a few map points in WvW, isn’t that even MORE reason to remove the temptation [on the WvW side]?
- If they want the exploration star, do they realize it signifies exploring Tyria, AKA the PvE side of the game?
I’ll say this again, as I have historically in these kind of threads:
I’m pretty diverse, but PvE is my absolute main playstyle. I’ve had my share of fun in WvW. NONE of which occurred during map completion or the original badge grind for my legendary.
In other words: I like WvW better when I don’t have a PvE goal to stress about. I like PvE better when I don’t have to worry about WvW.
Then just don’t.

I did not say I wanted things removed. I’m not a WvW player. I’m a PvE player. I said that there were likely WvW players who wanted PvE items related but they aren’t on here asking for it. Because they seem to understand that it does not need to be removed simply because they don’t like it.
And by the way, I was that someone who said this was an MMO. So I don’t know why you’re pointing that out to me.
And I also said that the WvW map completions are a test of patience for players who do not wish to play WvW or wish to map complete solo.
I’ve got map completion done on my only character that is level 80. I play slowly. I’m laughably bad at any form of PvP. I had the patience to get my map completion. I will likely get it on my other characters. Because it is not all that unreasonable to do.
And I sure hope WvW is still part of it when I do. Because there is something incredibly satisfying when I finish completing the WvW maps.

Do you have any suggestions for how to handle this better?
I don’t mean that in a snide way. I’m curious. I think if it is a genuine issue for WvW players, it’s worth talking about.
I don’t mind having to do WvW to get map completion, but I just can’t do it as all the areas I need are deep in the other territory and have been for months. All they would have to do is rotate the starting spots each week or month or something to give us a chance to get them. Please help us out. I would like to start making a legendary weapon, but can’t until I get a gift of exploration by getting map completion.
I agree with the OP – don’t force me to PvP.
Then just don’t.

sorry Seera, I didnt meant to respond to you; I meant to respond to the OP but when I hit the reply arrow on my phone it got yours instead
I would be a lot happier if the tower’s and keep’s PoI were at the gates instead of inside the walls. Thus, everyone that just need “that one tower” to fill the map can just run to the front door, get the PoI, and get killed.
And move out the vistas that are inside walls as well.
I’m fine with the castle ones in EB being in the inside walls. Makes you cheer for your server to conquer it.
I am officially the Worst PVP’er in all of Tyria and I was able to get all my objectives in all the WvW zones in a few weeks by joining a lot of groups and doing a little bit of sneaking around on my own. Dev’s, please don’t change map completion.
