Please save one of the most fun skills!
It did not change the amount of swiftness it grants. With runes of the pack and a warhorn you perma-swift through map completion. But you’re upset because you can pop it when you’re falling?

1min 44s demonstrates how necro can survive a fall of any height with none or only very low damage using spectral walk to “reset” the fall length midair. Necro is the only class with this unique ability and using it is not just useful, but FUN. When I have to wait in heart of the mist for a queue the majority of the time i’m climbing up somewhere high, freefalling and landing softly with spectral walk.
I don’t play Necro, but this use of the skill Looked Awesome (not allowed in GW2) and must have been Fun (actively discouraged).
This is a sad day indeed
Fun is evil apparently.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
you’ll have gliders to reduce your fall speed.
They don’t want you cheating in the new HoT maps, which are designed to make use of the vertical space

You mean the new maps where literally everyone will have the ability to fall from any height and take no damage?
So a Necro can do it in a different way. Whoop de doo.
So the fact that ONLY a Necro can pull this stunt (gimmick) off does not seem to beg for the Trait to be altered as indicated? Per above, something that could be OP in certain maps should not be ignored because you find it “fun”…..
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
HoT maps aren’t even competitive, in what way would this hurt anyone? What would be bad enough about using it in a few exclusive pve maps that the rest of the population who doesnt buy the expansion and especially wvw players still running necro should have a great and fun ability removed?
also ps if you’re really saying that in a video game, something being fun is not enough reason to keep it… what are games even for??
Most speculate that it’s Spectral Walk, not Spectral Return. If it’s the latter, I will be back in this thread raging and demanding to get one of the most awesome skills back. The Walk thingie, though, will be really exploity in the new highly vertical maps, so no wonder it gets changed.

Again, how can it possibly be “exploity” when they are letting literally everyone in those maps do the same thing without using a skill?

There’s no gliding in the new WvW map.
And in HoT, you have to glide forward, falling directly down and activating the glider without faceplanting in a wall will be rather tricky (but it still is not the point because WvW).

omg i havent laughed so hard in a long time…
that video is so worth watching from the beginning… that user is definitely one of the best necro’s i have seen.
The behavior is clearly not intended and has been very well publicized over the last year or more. It’s been fun, but I’m not surprised that it’s changed.

Gliding in a tight spiral is really easy.
And the new WvW maps aren’t the issue anyway, since you can’t drop into any objectives.

This is a lot more disappointing.
On the other hand if your world controls the right shrine you take no falling damage anyway.

Only in the air keep region of the map.
Necro’s aren’t allowed to have anything fun.

MMOs can’t just not have certain annoyances and inconveniences for players — the best they can do is disguise them. In this case, gliders might be fun, but the main reason they’re being added is to serve as a content gate.
If you can inherently negate fall damage without a glider, it negates part of the point in gliders even existing.

And yet, the main reason for them is completely intact, as Spectral Walk (or any other method to avoid falling damage, Guardians can do it too if there’s a mob at the bottom) cannot get you into those places that the Glider is for.
Think about it this way: Any place you can get to with Spectral Walk can be reached by having a buddy already down there or just popping a Revive orb. If the Gliders are supposed to be the way to get you there, then their purpose has been already covered by core features of the game that have been in since launch. They are failing at being “content gates” in situations where Spectral Walk is even relevant.
Well, that just means my engineer is going to have to do those jump puzzles! :S
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Using a buddy with legitimate access to a gated area to bypass a content gate sounds pretty in line with ANet philosophy to me. Revive Orbs not so much, but those are far more limited than mid-air spectral walks are.
And this assumes that they don’t just implement automatic release for falling deaths, like Aion does already.

The point is that the glider would in no way gate the content that Spectral Walk’s current functionality lets you reach, so the glider’s purpose as a content gate remains intact.
There really isn’t a good reason for this change.
Snowfall runes + 50% fall dmg reduction = 75% fall damage reduction. I’ve messed around with this when I was bored and it can survive a beastly fall without spectral walk, revive orb or teammate to help you up.
Please also remove snowfall runes and fall dmg traits to prevent players from getting around the HoT maps :p
This change is deserves to be reverted.
Didnt you know that your not allowed to have fun?
Personally, I’m grateful that these changes were announced before I purchased HoT. Now I can sit back and see how it all plays out.
I’m going to guess that this change is to keep Necros from bypassing content to get to areas of the map they couldn’t otherwise reach.
The thing is that if necros can do it, some other resourceful classes using revive orb or something else will still be able to get at whatever this change was meant to protect. If there’s a will and a lack of invisible walls, there’s a way. If they really want players to “stay out” they should put some kind of event wall that prevents people from entering without a glider, or some other solution. Otherwise people are going to find their way in, necro or no.
And again punishing everyone to the end of one very small corner of the game is unfair.

In the new trailer for guild halls there’s someone glide-diving straight down, so apparently it will be possible.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
I’m afraid if people don’t raise more of a fuss it’s going to get permanently removed for no clear reason. Thinking about it being gone makes me so sad.
GUYS calm down with all the uproar please. As josh davis just said in the other post
Clarification: the only thing that was changed was that you can’t use “Spectral Walk” in air. You can still use “Spectral Recall” which is the skill that returns you to your original location. This means you can still use Spectral Walk, jump off a cliff and teleport back.
What you can’t do is jump off a cliff, double tap Spectral Walk (and then Spectral Recall) just before hitting the ground to nullify falling damage.
This makes perfect sense. It may be fun, but it is ultimately cheating the new maps if you pull this off. The air camp will have areas with buffs that prevent fall damage. There are no gliders in wvw. This skill as it was is an unprecedented unfair advantage in wvw. You are suppose to capture an objective that prevents all fall damage. There are areas of the map that you will die if you fall even if you have a 50% reduction.
I understand this trait was fun. I would go into skyhammer when I was bored and explore the area on the floor.
This trait is also cheating for the purposes of gliders. We have glider mastery but we can only open them in the air a certain number of times. In a large fall necros would have an unfair advantage over any other class. They would bug the glider so they can open it more times than they should be able to.

Unless people are going to have all necro zergs who are unable to catch or escape from enemy combat, no longer able to reliably clear condition spikes/lockdown, and constantly putting conditions on themselves, “unprecedented unfair advantage” seems unlikely.

No they wouldn’t because your glider resets the fall damage speed quickly enough that even without more mastery points you will be able to rest your fall damage before hitting the ground when timed correctly.
You can break out of skyhammer on any class, it is the easiest map breakout in the game.
It also, will not allow you to use spectral walk if your on certain terrain just like the air immobilize bug that can occur when statically sitting upon certain slope angles, this will cause more problems for necromancers in pvp scenarios trying to use spectral walk in a way considered legitimate
As I understand it HoT’s new map is very multi-level but very linear. So they really don’t want people creating shortcuts. Hence the nerf to every movement skill.
