Greetings friends! It’s been a while since I came around, and I see they got rid of the Black Lion Trading forums. Not sure why they decided to do that, but worry not, as I’m here to bring back the magic of market talk.

As you know, Precursors are wondrous luxury item. Many people want one, but a lot feel they’re unable to afford one, let alone get lucky enough to win RNG. Well, with Precursors being so ultra rare, there are some available right now on the TP for 100 Gold or less! As you’ll see in the attached screen shots, there are options for the budget minded players who want a Legendary, but lack the funds to buy Dusk or Spark.

Which is a shame. If it received just a minimal amount of dev effort (and a restoration and re-implementation of the water areas in WvW instead of the ~removal they pulled) then the 3D combat could be amazing for how much it shakes up the combat system of the game.

It’s just… It needs so little. One pass over the raw damage numbers of the underwater weapons. Done. Just the numbers! Not even the skill effects, those are meh but can be manageable!

Not this again.

That’s all well and good if you just want a legendary and don’t care which one, or happen to really like Rodgort, Frenzy, or Kraitkin.

But most people want the ones for the weapons they actually use, and you know that kitten well.

This post makes just as much sense as “you can equip all your characters in Zojja’s Ascended without ever crafting” and “everyone can become the president of United States”, but whatever, it will draw the desired attention and make a particular person happy.

The point here is that even a Casual player with low income can afford a Precursor, and eventually work their way to a Legendary. Not everyone is skilled in JPs. Not everyone has the time to run 100 Dungeons a day. And not everyone has the money to buy the most desirable Precursors.

If you make the choice to aim for something that you’ll never be able to afford, you can’t complain. However, if you realize that there are other options, life starts to look a little better. As a sports analogy, if you can’t afford Joe Montana, there’s always Steve Young.

Sports players have different stats, ascended-legendaries don’t; thus, the game is not a sport, it’s an art. If you want Picasso, you don’t buy Malevich because you can afford it. You either save for Picasso or buy nothing at all. And you know it.

I’m glad that some people understand that higher demanded Precursors will carry a higher price. The opposite is true for lower demanded ones having a lower price. It’s these lower demanded one that people with low income can buy to start their Legendary journey.

As a car analogy: If you can’t afford to buy that new Ferrari, there’s a nice Kia Soul for a good price.

I’ll enforce the Godwin’s law and say that it’s somewhat very similar to “educational” threads telling that swastika should be allowed to be used freely since it’s actually a “kolovrat” symbol of the sun in Russia and a sacred symbol in Buddhism.

As a car analogy: If you can’t afford to buy that new Ferrari, there’s a nice Kia Soul for a good price.

There’s a reason why they are in low demand, and you know it. The people generally do not want a precursor. They want a precursor for the Legendary they can use… or at the very least show off with. Underwater precursors do not fill that requirement. Offhands that most classes can’t (or don’t) use are the same. The real interest will always lie with the main/two handers for land combat.
Which, of course you already know.

As a car analogy: If you can’t afford to buy that new Ferrari, there’s a nice Kia Soul for a good price.

In that analogy Kia Soul is an ascended greatsword. Carcharias is a Ferrari-marked go-cart.
Neither of those make real Ferrari car any cheaper.

Well you have to consider what they were comparing to. Any MMO back then on the market and sure, GW2 has a metric crap ton more of underwater exploration than all the competitors combined. Now with ArcheAge out there the mantle is not that certain anymore.

All in all, I think GW2 has some really nice underwater locations, but it’s clear to see it’s not been their focus recently.

I agree….. Water combat has so much potential….. but its wasted with a lackadaisical development team. It started as a wonderful platform, and just needs to be built upon. Guild Wars 2 is the only game where I don’t mind underwater combat…… but its Anet’s job to turn the “I don’t mind it” into “This is awesome.”

I won’t even bother coming back to the game until I’m guaranteed to able to get a Legendary. And it wouldn’t be 2.5 year old one either. They’d have to come out with all new weapons and practically give you a precursor. Then the game may be worth trying again. But still probably not tbh.

A character storyline quest to obtain the precursor would be a good way to do it. Not too hard or long but the choices you make along the way determine your precursor achieved. But yeah effort put in to a 2.5 year old weapon at this point is a waste. Better to play other more rewarding games.

The cheaper precursors are ones that are part of niche specs for select classes. Torch is only useful in a hand of builds and not very good in half of all classes that can even equip it.

Compare that to staffs and greatswords which are very solid weapons for almost everyone that can use them. Which is why’re they’re really really expensive.

Weapon skills aren’t very even to be honest. It wasn’t at launch and I’m surprised they haven’t tweaked them to make certain weapons more appealing and useful.

Well, to make them more desirable, they could possibly make spear and trident legendaries interchangeable with staffs, spearguns with rifles.

To be honest, I don’t really know why there needs to be specific underwater and land weapons at all. I can understand a torch being unusable underwater but then this is magic… you still get Elementalist fire skills usable underwater.

As you’ll see in the attached screen shots, there are options for the budget minded players who want a Legendary, but lack the funds to buy Dusk or Spark.

If we are objective, threads about precursors being too pricy diminished quite a bit in the last couple of months. And rightly so because most lost value every month on average since Aug/Sep due to several reasons. The high droprate of t5 mats during LS season 2, halloween and now snowflakes being some of them.

Especially the huge influx of snowflakes seems to be a deliberate attempt to put a cap on t5 fine mat and subsequently precursor prices, with giant wintersday gifts now available year round from the forge, home instance nodes and maybe even ugly clothing.

But in the end, the falling price of precursors wont really matter to most players because t5 fine mats, which is a big part of the average veteran players loot table every day, lost value in a similar pace.
The only ones that might profit from falling precursor prices are dungeon runners whose loot mostly consists of coin drops.

I attached two screenshots, the first one shows price evolution on t5 large claws, the 2nd one is from Dawn.
Of course, they dont exactly match each other because either one has to catch up to the other, if supply or demand for each (precursor or t5 mat) changes drastically, but they are quite close.
The graphs show prices from march (announcement of the feature pack and accont bound leggie skins) until now.

While prices for dawn where rising until peaking in aug/sep, t5 claws, even though rising at the same pace, always did so a little later. When Season 2 started, t5 mats in general started dropping at higher rate and precursor prices started falling also as a reaction to it, but at a slower pace.
The 2 occasions when claws lost alot of value suddenly in oct/nov were halloween and SW amber chest farm. The last one, of course, were t5 flakes, which are available for 2s and pulled claws to the same level.

Falling prices do matter to most players in as much as they’re liquifying everything to gold instead of holding onto their drops; the T5 fine mats they sold last year for <1s are long gone, and the value of that gold they’re holding sloshes around.

If you’re starting today the real price of a precursor has only dropped since last summer, as the profit margin from crafting them continues to narrow.

As you said, the only ones really affected by the gold value slosh is the dungeon runners, whose incomes are disproportionately raw coin. The price of a precursor in dungeon runs did climb substantially even as its price in Orr farming has dropped precipitously.
