Alts are debateably one of the least user-friendly areas in the game.

Armour and weapons are soulbound, and to function well you need multiple stat combos at your disposal. Leveling is tedious after multiple alts and the only ways of not having to go through the same boring gameplay for hours and hours is through crafting or speedrunning citadel of flame and quickly switching in the end. On top, the only good PvP in the game is limited to level 80s, whatever anyone says (if you run anything but a level 80 geared in exotic or better quality you die in seconds).
Dyes are for obnoxious reasons unlocked ONLY on one character and so on.
This really needs better.

Some ideas have already been written over these forums multiple times:

  • Deleting “soulbound” (and replacing it with accountbound)
  • Adding a skin database with unlimited unlocking of skins you unlocked.

Others can be added:

  • Making experience convertible from character to character.
  • Allowing us to unlock hair-styles and colours permanently for the whole account (by purchasing them in the store)
  • Allowing characters to use gear you bought on others.
  • Making certain stat combinations unlockable for the whole account.

TLDR: You want to purchase/do everything all at once and want it to be readily available for other alts.

That’s not going to work well with the economy. All prices in game would more than likely drop.

That would also more than likely kill the gameplay experience for the majority of users. Why continue playing when everything is handed to you? What is the point of gold in this game if everything can be bought once and then you are finished?

I don’t have an issue with soul bound gear. That’s pretty standard across these types of games. I would like to see a better implementation of easily swapping out the stats on a set of armor. This way we don’t necessarily have to invest an arm, a leg, and our first born child into obtaining more than one set. Mainly thinking ascended here, since my husband when thru and broke everything down and tallied it all up across our characters. Can you guess what I’m in no hurry to do?

I would like to see some type of pve skin locker for certain skins – purchased skins, one time obtainables, etc. Obviously there will be limitations on this, since they can’t simply give us everything we desire.

Dyes…yes, this is something I would like to see as account bound rather than character bound. It was actually something I was extremely excited about prior to launch…and then it got changed with no real notice. So sad… sniffle They gave reasons for making the change, but they are rather weak in my opinion.

Experience being convertable… You mean so you can say level a lower character with the extra experience of a higher char? I can’t say I agree with that. Now, I wouldn’t mind if you could transfer skill points from one character to another. We could do that via Stars of Tranference in GW1 (after eotn). Made it helpful in unlocking skills on lower chars. I could see doing that again here, but you would still be required to actually ‘play’ via some means in order to actually level up.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

When i hit lvl 80 about a month after release, it took me at least another month, if not longer, to gather enough gold/karma/etc. to get my first full exotic set and the next ones also needed their time. I didnt hear anybody complaining back then that its too hard to gear up different alts in multiple exotic builds.

Just because exotic sets are easy to come by now doesnt mean the same should apply for ascended gear.

I think they do a lot to make alts easier already, but then I’m used to single player games where different characters are completely separate. Nothing can be shared between them and each one you have to start from scratch and play through the entire game.

I don’t know how it’s handled in other MMOs, but from what people have said they expected (in other topics about this) I understand they let you do a lot more. Like create characters at max level after levelling one up, share all your weapons and armor and unlock skills and other upgrades account-wide. So I can see how it would come as a shock that GW2 doesn’t have that.

But it gets complained about a lot so maybe this is something they’ll address in the big features update after the current Living Story arc has finished.

I didnt hear anybody complaining back then that its too hard to gear up different alts in multiple exotic builds.

Just because exotic sets are easy to come by now doesnt mean the same should apply for ascended gear.

Exotics are much easier to get, although sometimes the t6 materials can be a wicked kitten if you don’t have the gold to just buy them. But there is a huge discrepancy between the availability of exotics vs the availability of ascended. You built karma to obtain your exotics. At the present time, ascended can only be crafted, and the leveling of that crafting can be extremely expensive. Drastically more so than a single set, or even several sets of exotics.

That’s sort of beside the point though honestly. I was thinking more along the lines of once I achieve my character’s “look” I don’t think we should necessarily have to create a whole new armor set just to change the stats, and then have to transmute the look over. Or, obtain all the components to recreate the look so that we can have 2 sets.

Now, some people will do that. That’s their prerogative. I just don’t think you should ‘have’ to necessarily. They could do something similar to GW1 where we could just swap the insignia that sets the armor stats.

No, I don’t think this should be free either. It wasn’t in GW1, we had to buy the insignia we wanted, and if we wanted to keep the old one (to swap back and forth or whatever) then you needed a perfect salvage kit so nothing would be damaged. In a sense, we have the equivalent of the perfect salvage in the store’s ‘upgrade extractor.’ Yes, that doesn’t work on insignia, but it could with some tweaking. After which, we would simply need the means of adding a different insignia to the existing armor, insignia which could be obtained via crafting, salvaging, or buying off the TP.

Theoretically it should be a relatively minor change, which would make the gearing of alts a little more friendly at both the exotic and the ascended levels. (There has been a lot of screaming about ascended after all). This would still leave the ‘free’ out of battle stat swapping as unique to legendaries.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

I like the idea of account-wide dyes, and to add to your “hairstyle” ideas… I think a cool addition to the Gem Shop would be to add an account bound “Hairstylist” that can be conjured (with unlimited uses) and this stylist would have all hairstyles, plus the new ones added in the makeover kit (plus colors). They could sell this for say…800-1000 gems and each use costs a certain amount to use. Maybe 1 gold per use. For an indecisive person like myself, I’m constantly wanting to change my character’s appearance…I would DEFINITELY buy something like this.

Again this…What do you want,to make a character and if you want another one to get it to 80 instantly get all the skills unlocked, move the armor from the main…what is that?!?
If you want an alt, work for it!
I’ve played many mmo’s and GW2 is the most alt friendly.
You want to make this easy game to be easier.
Nobody forces you to create another alt and if you think to have an alt takes too much time just play on your main.
I have a lvl 80 alt, full exotics, main with asecended weapon and 3/6 ascended armor, ascended accesories and back item.
I am leveling my 3rd char now,not rushing or anything and is awesome.
You should not have anything unlocked on an alt since is another character, not an extended main.

No, it never took as much effort to get exotics as it does to get ascended. However, that’s also due to having so many avenues of acquisition for exotics. Karma, Dungeons, Crafting, straight off the TP…

What about the other way around? The only way to get past 2 legendarys at the moment is to create an alt to get the gifts of exploration again.

If you focus on only one character a somewhat long term reasonable goal would be to have every weapon that you are able to wield be a legendary. However without alts this is impossible (short of buying them of the TP… which just isn’t very legendary…).

I’d like to see some sort of system where I could buy more gifts of exploration with currencies gained on my main (Example 250,000 karma + 100g + 50 Laurels or some such combination. Numbers can change) from a Master Cartographer that wanders Tyria who will only offer to sell the gift of exploration to you after you have world completion.

I would like some things to be made more convienent for alts, like dyes or being able to pass down some gear as I gain ascended pieces or having a PvE locker for skins or having the one time only reward skins from the living story move to reusable skins like the hellfire / radiant ones.

I just think we need to keep in mind those that focus mainly on one character as well.

Did you actually play the game in 2012? Exotic gear actually cost more in the first 3 months to craft or buy on the tp than now. And there wasnt that much gold floating around in the first place, so coughing up 4g for an exotic zerker greatsword was alot of money, considering that you got an average of 1 gold for 100 gems in 2012, now you get 6g. It also wasnt easy to farm gold those days as it is now and getting 42k for a single piece of gear took quite a while. Dungeon runs also looked quite a bit different then and took some time as most people were still in masterwork or rare gear and didnt have a clue what they were doing.

Leveling is pretty fun in this game, but I wouldn’t mind a way to jump alts to 80. After leveling 4 characters to 80, I’m somewhat indifferent to doing it again.

Otherwise I think they’ve done a pretty good job about deciding what is account-bound vs character-bound. Except crafters should be able to sell ascended gear.

Yes, I have played since launch. I am aware that the cost of things has shifted over time; although even in the first several months people were complaining (and loudly) about exotics being too easy. About karma being too abundant and worthless… And thus we were given ascended (which is a kitten) and a karma nerf. How lovely.

The cost of a dungeon set has not changed the amount of required tokens, and only takes 12 days if you only run 2 different paths a day now. Originally there was no cap to the tokens like there is now. You could just swap to an alt and keep collecting. chuckle I remember the uproar when they time gated that.

But there is a huge discrepancy between the availability of exotics vs the availability of ascended. You built karma to obtain your exotics. At the present time, ascended can only be crafted, and the leveling of that crafting can be extremely expensive. Drastically more so than a single set, or even several sets of exotics.

I was comparing to exotic gear when the game launched and the months after, when they were best in slot. At that time, it nearly took as much effort to get a full set as it is now with ascended. And Anet stated that the player base got exotics way faster than they anticipated and intended. So it is working as intended that ascended builds take as much time as they do right now.

No, it never took as much effort to get exotics as it does to get ascended. However, that’s also due to having so many avenues of acquisition for exotics. Karma, Dungeons, Crafting, straight off the TP…

It’s not quite that simple for ascended. Yes, it’s supposed to take longer, I get that. But it borders on going a bit overboard.

I played since start, and didn’t craft my first exotics, me and all teammates went and bought piecemeal Karma armor from the temples for our first exotics, first exotic weapons were from dungeon vendors. And on each of my level 80s I had exotics pretty much the same day as I got to 80 since Karma was so abundant back then….heck for alts I used to run the Dredge leaders in Frostgorge….take a karma potion and run that over and over again (they respawned every 1/2 hour and killing all 6 would net you like 2400 Karma back then even without the potion…with potion is was 3600. I could have another temple set in a few hours.)

If they had an option like that for ascended’s for my ALTs I would love it. otherwise there is no way I could get my 8 level 80 alts in ascended gear.

Some ideas have already been written over these forums multiple times:

  • Deleting “soulbound” (and replacing it with accountbound)
won’t happen because Anet makes more money with it as it currently is
  • Adding a skin database with unlimited unlocking of skins you unlocked.
won’t happen because Anet makes more money with it as it currently is

Others can be added:

  • Making experience convertible from character to character.
  • Allowing us to unlock hair-styles and colours permanently for the whole account (by purchasing them in the store)
won’t happen because Anet makes more money with it as it currently is
  • Allowing characters to use gear you bought on others.
won’t happen because Anet makes more money with it as it currently is
  • Making certain stat combinations unlockable for the whole account.
    getting the picture yet?
Where are my gem sales? I want gem sales! Nerf EVERYTHING!

1. I would love a skin library. We already have the start of one under achievements. I would like it if I could acquire “skins” add them to my “library”, expand said library to say pvp locker size, and then just reapply those skins to my armor as I upgrade to ascended gear or choose to change my look. I don’t think it’s terribly hard and we already have all the mechanics to do it. I have 15 characters (yes, I have 15 characters) and I love playing them. I have no problem grinding out the stat gear for each character to have but once I have a particular skin I like I want to keep it available across my account.

2. Totally agree to dye being account bound.

3. I really appreciate that the infinite gathering tools were made account bound but I was also thinking it would be nice if, once I have them they get ‘slotted’ so that I can swap to my alts without having to go to a bank and switch it in every time I change characters. It would also mean I don’t need to remember which of my fifteen characters I have it on. Just a small quality of life thing. It can be the sort of thing where the game goes “ohey, you bought a gathering tool off the gem store! Well let’s remember that you have it across your account.”

My 18 characters are waiting for outfits from GW1 like Tuxedos! WE GOT DWAYNA! =D
