Seriously… Is there some sort of account bug or am I just incredibly unlucky? I hear how people get 10 exotics if not more a week. Some players who’ve had their accounts for less than a month get a precursor sell it and make quick bank.

I go months without seeing a single exotic besides what I use!

I’ve only ONCE got an event claim ticket for a skin, and it was compete accident when I didn’t even like them.

My buddy quits and goes to WoW then comes back and gets two precursors two days in a row. I haven’t even gotten a fractal weapon!!!

Is there something wrong with my account, luck is clearly a factor but for this long never getting anything good wtf?

I’m half PvE Half PvP so I only got to R40 showing a clear significant time I spend in PvE and I’m lucky to get a 75ish exotic that sells for under a gold. Something has to be wrong.

I feel your pain OP. I have never once gotten an exotic weapon drop. Only one time have I gotten a good rare drop – still not a precursor. The few other rares I ended up with were junk that weren’t worth anything. I give up on drops and BL chests. Period. Total garbage. I play only because I want to at this point. No legendaries for me… no insta-gold drops. Just fun. When I stop having fun, I’m outta here.

I think that is the problem, currently I have:
1 Jade ticket
1 Karka Ticket
1 Aether Hammer skin
400 Scraps
1 Golden Scrap

all for skins I don’t want or like. If you like them, you won’t get them. If you could careless, you have to worry about running out of bank space like me.

Been playing since release, only gotten a few good drops, that is, exotics, at most 8, all worth less than 2 gold mind you, 3 of them were FoTM exotics which I couldnt sell of course.
As for precursor, I have given up on it, not an aqutic one dropped, not one. Thrown countless rares and exotics into the mystic toilet and pearl stuff is the only thing I ever get. Good luck my friend, because we definitely lack it.

edit I dont like to get into “conspiracies”, but my cousin who has less than 400 hours and plays every2 months already got a precursor, sold it for profits and has logged in 1 months, im expecting that once he logs in he gets another one. Maybe Anet rewards people who sta long time som good stuff so they feel an incentive to stay, and those who log every day or almost everyday get a DR since they are already “hooked” and dont need anything else…..I hope not and just that the RNG god just hates me…

If this is how it is I’m considering just quitting. And although this is prob taken as “I didn’t get what I want /rage /wrath /quit /uninstall” realistically I have invested time and effort into this game, I am not the best but I am clearly an above average player both PvE and PvP, and I have realistically no “in game swag” to show for it when that’s clearly the point of end game, make yourself look awesome then trample around the world like a Boss!

There is no prestige here nothing for your accomplishments other than maybe titles, it’s all RNG and luck. When is the last time you got a weapon skin for completing something challenging? 20+ fractal? Nawww that’s not even hard and that’s still RNG to 1 get a weapon then more RNG to get the one you want.. What did we get for gauntlet? an ugly mini? And that’s the first relatively challenging content we have gotten and kind of feels good to have the big name WvW players on your server ask you how it’s done. First level of mediocre prestige and you can’t even swing it.

As far as I can tell the ONLY way to get anywhere is farm, farm farm farm save your gold never spend it keep farming, then buy a precursor, because in all likely hood you can’t spend 500g turning it into gems trying to get a unique weapon skin from chests.
When they can make it 1600 gems for an item and will cash in more than enough.

The PvP would be enough to keep me, but the balance is stupid and they refused to do any class changes because of PAX which in all honesty I could be wrong about this but I feel it’s purely masturbatory and other than the hand full of players, there not many people who care. (4-5k out of 3 million plus players… Seems legit, let’s hold the meta and development of the game back for them.)

I will keep playing from time to time and keep an eye on the updates, maybe finish the meta every month, casually help people or play with some friends. But clearly the ones who are rewarded are the ones who don’t play. So fine, I can be content with what I have now but I’m pretty much done for now. I by no means hate this game, but there’s nothing to work for other than a huge grind with RNG elements.

Until some sort of ‘streak breaker’ code is implemented, the RNG can go either way. Tons of good luck or tons of bad. Some of us skate the bad luck. I have played with some really lucky people. I am happy for them; I really am. I am also very jealous.
I don’t know how to change my luck other than just keep playing and hope.
I also have learned to minimize risk taking such as the Mystic Forge or purchasing keys for BLTC chests. My rule is to only dump rares that have dropped from mobs into the forge, and only if they are under 30silver. The best thing that ever dropped was an exotic staff ‘deathwish’. I keep it and any other exotic that has dropped in my bank.
I wish you better luck than you’ve had.

Don’t feel bad. I think I’ve only had two exotics drop since I started playing the game back a year ago. Never gotten a ticket (and not for lack of trying, I actually farmed for the jade ticket eight hours a day for that and… nothing).

Fortunately I don’t really play for drops, so it only annoys me occasionally. Although the Jade ticket thing frustrated me.

True, and the saddest part is that all they have to do to fix it is institute “Streak-Breaker code” ….which they ALREADY HAVE when it comes to getting too many Rares, etc… (Most people call it diminishing returns but I feel that’s a word that gets thrown around too much so I’m still waiting for someone to coin a better phrase)

The answer lies in the type of random number generator they use but ANET will never give a definitive on it. Pseudo random number generators using a FIXED seed will return the same set of repeating results over a given period of time. Since that seed number is fixed and more then likely fixed to the account and not per character you may very well have one person getting one set of results while another gets a different set and since both sets REPEAT themselves after so many rolls the first person could be luckier then the second but it has noting at all to do with luck and everything to do with that fixed seed.

There is a very clear explanation on the above problems with fixed seed rng’s here if you scroll down to the heading “Setting Seeds”.

there is no streak-breaking code. I’ve rolled 5 superior sigils in a row before (from majors).
to answer your question: you’re missing some info.
first, those people who show you the 3 precursors they’ve had thrown at them by Zommoros don’t tell you about the 2,000 other rolls that gave nothing, or the 1500g they paid to just buy them and make you feel bad, or the [&AgHddwAA] they copy/paste to display a item even if they don’t have it.
second, random is not even distribution. there are going to be clumps. If there aren’t, it’s not random. I may of had 5 successes in a row, but you better believe that the next 30 rolls after that gave nothing.
If someone tells you, for example, that it takes about 100 rolls to get a precursor, know that that is average. some people will get it in 2, and some will get it in 198 (note that the average between those two is 100).
RNG is not broken. what you expect out of it is. go ahead and hate it, but what you describe is a successfully implemented random number generation.

RGN is RNG? The anecdote about you not getting anything and the other guy getting 2 is pretty much what RNG is all about.

And hating that pre’s are dropping via RNG.., well, how else would you like it? No drops, but you can buy them for gold/gems (really the same) at a merch? Then you’d hate on the people who trade a lot or farm a lot, or buy gems. If you get a pre when your char turns 1yr? then you’d hate on people who have been playing longer than you. Just give everyone all the pres at any time? Yea, not so legendary anymore.

Dropping via RNG at least gives you that “cool, I got sweet loot” feeling.

Remember also that legendaries were supposed to take you a loooong time to get. Of course, ANet, like any other MMO company ever, underestimated the tenacity of their players.

Sure. Humans are naturally “programmed” to look for and see patterns even when there aren’t any. Other people lie and overstate their success because… err… because they are kittens??? Idk.

However, I do think that there’s a problem with a model that is so stingy with rewards. Look at it this way. I play these games as an escape from reality. Video games allow me to play the role of the hero.

The hero is suppose to find the rare item, obtain the precursor, forge the legendary weapon, slay the dragon, get the cool skin, earn loads of money, etc…

But not in an MMO (or at least this MMO). In an MMO you’re just a schlub. They call you the “hero of shaemoor” but really, you’re a schlub.

So if you enjoy the game play and can treat it like chess or checkers or a non-loot driven single player game, then you’ll be fine.

If you want to earn loot like playing Diablo then you should go elsewhere.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

Know what I wouldn’t hate on? Hard challenging content that proves your own tenacity, or skill that is based on an individual (so you can’t just get carried) that has a guaranteed level 80 exotic drop for your class, with a chance at a pre.

Gimmie a mad kings clock tower style jumping puzzle where it is timed and really keeps you on your toes, but even more challenging! then at the top a boss fight that’s like Liadri but tougher mechanics instanced (so you don’t need to deal with a mass of people near by) bigger room maybe even a bigger intense 3 phase boss fight with tons of instant death for standing in the wrong spot. The kind if thing that makes you yell “COME @ ME BRO” knowing that not everyone with every build is going to be able to clear it.

The people who feel entitled can keep their crappy RNG. Or can overly farm matts to craft it when that content becomes available.

I really don’t think anyone can claim being entitled to something when they are just legit not good enough to finish the content.

I try not to get all elitist on people, and I reserve how I feel even when someone is genuinely bad and I don’t shove it in their face for the sake of saving the community more toxicity. But allow me to show a bit of that side! Fact is scrubs and baddies aren’t entitled to nor are deserving of anything if they can’t raise their own skill level.

RNG is fine for those who can’t but there is no reason why “luck” needs to be a end game barrier.

I don’t think they are using PRNG here. First of all, PRNG isn’t exactly as significant and as necessary in mmorpgs such as GW2 as it is in games like DOTA or LoL, where a single Bash not-procuring may be the difference between a match win or lose.

Secondly, given that, at least in my experience, it is too often that I can get too many rares+an exotic in a row, and then other times none at all for a stretch- this all pretty much shows an RNG behavior.

On the other hand, there’s always also the possibility that there are more systems in play than we might think. As such, our good friend Unintended Consequences (unfortunate interplay or outright bugs) may well be involved in what is undoubtedly a more complex system than a simple RNG.

FWIW, I know that I get Broken Lockpicks and various kinds of Bones in my hour or two of an evening almost right from the get-go so I assume that DR is kicking in hard and fast even for a relatively casual player like myself.

In fairness I spend most of my time at the moment levelling alts by just “playing the game” (and, I hasten to add, enjoying it) and so am not in high level zones all that often and that probably dramatically reduces access to (the apparently appropriately titled) rares and exotics to begin with since I don’t think there are all that many sub-40 or so anyway. But I have to admit, the Porous Bones are really starting to get on my nerves: they remind me a lot of Half Digested Boots for some reason….

For there to be another way to obtain the items if one simply has bad luck, you know like most other mmorpgs. They are implementing it for precursors supposedly but really too little too late, should have been in the game from the beginning, at this stage in mmo design it should be a fundamental part of any design.

Random is random. RNG means something will happen the first time for some and never for others. Usually, when I see people get upset about RNG, it’s over something to do with legendaries. I’m not really sure what the fuss is concerning them. They’re not that big a deal and if the only thing you like about this game is owning a legendary, are you even playing the right game?

I’m in the same boat and I truly believe there is a bug that makes certain accounts extremely unlucky. I’ve played a little over 3000 hours, guess how many exotics I’ve looted? One. And it wasn’t even a good exotic, it sold for 1.5 gold. I’ve dumped countless rares and exotics into the mystic forge every single day I played and got crap in return. In all I probably dropped in more than 3000 rares and over 1500 exotics. It’s like Diablo 3 all over again.

I played Fractals every day. I did CoF at least 5 times every day. Then I did meta bosses at every chance I had. I did this every day for nearly 2500 hours and I’ve gotten nothing in return. The RNG is complete garbage in this game and I’ve never complained so hard against anything in any game in the history of ever. Even Diablo 3 didn’t spur on any hatred from me with it’s constant nerfs and no drops of anything good. In fact, I’ve never complained in any game but Guild Wars 2, because there’s a huge need for it.

Random is random. RNG means something will happen the first time for some and never for others.

It should even out over thousands of iterations, based on the feedback this is not necessarily happening.

RNG is RNG but it is totally broken when one guy drops 3 precusrors from a couple hundred rares/exotic into the forge and his guild mate has giving thousands upon thousands to the mystic thief and not even get a nice exotic worth more than 2g back. I agree that there needs to be some RNG elements in the game but there seems to be too much in GW2. You even have RNG within RNG (bag of heavy coins from BL chests) Here is a chest that has a chance of dropping a bag that has a chance of dropping a large sum of money but will more than likely be a silver or 2. I got one that gave me 8c once, how does 8c qualify as a heavy bag of coins?

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”

I’m not going to find the thread because the search is broken. But ANet has said that there is not account or character based information used in the seed.

You are missing the main point. It does not really matter what the seed is based on. What does matter is if it is a fixed seed or a random seed. A fixed seed generator will will eventually repeat a pattern and as they put it in the link above that pattern will begin anew every time you log out and then log back in. If that is the case and the first 1,000 rolls for your rng are lousy rolls you get to re-log the next day and go through those same lousy rolls again. It would explain why some people have precursors dropping out of that spot reserved for horseshoes while others will never get a whiff of one. Just from the sheer number of people complaining about the rng I will believe it is a fixed seed one unless ANET says differently.

Is is too bad the search function is busted as I would dearly love to know where you got that info and whether or not ANET mentions if the seed is fixed or random.

You’ve summarized my GW2 experience.

My advice:

Get over yourself. If some players have to put up with RNG, then so do you. You’re not any more special than the rest of us. You don’t deserve to put up with RNG? Then go elsewhere, nobody’s stopping you.

Bad reasoning.

RNG makes some more special than the rest of us. That’s the whole point of this RNG crap. It’s therefore logical that people complain about it in a game like this. RNG like it’s applied here is just a cheap mechanic probably used because the rest of the game is too casual.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

Don’’t feel bad, in the year playing GW2 I have gotten a lot of rares but all garbage that sells for 35s TOPS, a handful of exotics, garbage again none selling for over 3-4g, MOST under 1g, NEVER seen an exotic(I think they are a myth, LOL). I guess I’m the unluckiest person on the planet. The RNG despises me, but, I will keep on keeping on as I do like(not love like GW1) GW2.

I understand you very well dear friend, it’s quite frustrating, and not fair in any way!

Guess what…i have a similar story with a old friend during “Dragon’s bash”…

I opened in a total kinda 1000 chests and get 2 Jade skins,(Truth is i got them both opened the first 400).
Other friend of me (Playing from game start) was kinda in love for the Staff Jade skin, because he is a Elementalist, and it’s his only char.

That guy, till the Dragon’s event end, have opened nearly 50.000 chests an not a single one he got!!! I can testify this as we live in the same house!!!

Result….when Dragon’s bash ended, he left the game and he is playing GW1!

I must say also, he was one of that players that spend a lot of euros in the shop, to help support the game! (kinda 100Euros per Month, what is a lot with the kind of economy we have in my country)!

This is not exactly to rebuke or debate….i write this because IMO anet need to know they are loosing this kind of players, due to problems like the RNG System!

It’s a shame!

I don’t care that I rarely get exotic drops, because you are guaranteed a lot of rarer items just from Guild Missions. Most of them salvage into ecto, or sell for more, in addition to getting advancements in the game (ascended).

I’ve been playing since launch and never – repeat – never got a Precursor. The total exotic I got is probably less than give or take 15-20. And we’re talking about playing since launch (and taking 3 months break).

Now, whose unlucky?

lol

Edit:

I meant to imply RNG loots – not quest rewards.

Precusors are that rare. I daresay most of the population by percentage has never gotten a precusor. I got one, and very few people put in the hours I put in. It’s just a very very small chance to get one.

Yeah, I’m not complaining. I’m just providing some ice breaker.

I really don’t care if it’s a bad loot week. It happens. It’s random – like most MMO, and I played worse MMO where the cost to enter a dungeon is almost exact as the amount of loot you’ll get unless you are extremely lucky. lol

Guess that depends on the person.

The way I see it, is that because of the lack of gear progression, endgame content revolves around getting skins. Since most skins are easy to acquire and there’s only a few that are rare and RNG is the way to get it.

The way I see it, is that if you want a specific skin and it’s down to RNG or massive grind/farming to get it because it really is the only long term goal, then you either quit because it’s too far out of reach or once you get it. This game is not for goal oriented people in that sense.

Really, if exotic gear in general wasn’t so dead easy to get and the quality of skins was better overall, this game would be a lot better.

I do believe there are lucky accounts including mine, I’ve easily had close to 200 exotics, the events on southsun i got 42 exotics in 6 days and im be no way an intense player i have job ect. My friend who played a lot with me i’d say the first 6 months of the game probably got a 1/10th of the exotics i did and he always said to me never delete my character.
Lucks a wonderful thing when it’s on your side but a pain in the butt when it isnt.
But it’s easy to remember all the good drops but the days you get nothing you soon forget.
And no i’ve never had a precursor drop either

Sure, it’s more complex.

I don’t know that I necessarily believe or don’t believe in this unlucky account theory, but it would be interesting to test with a different character on the same account, I think.

Still, without some actual numbers and probably video, this is all just theory.

I had one guildy that always said he never got lucky because the times he did he forgots very fast.

It’s like people who say there are only cash shop weapons in this game, but they complete ignore the fact that a bunch of new weapons were added to the game in just the last patch. Does everyone remember that? Nope.

I’m not saying someone is lucky or unlucky but I am saying that saying you’re unlucky is just that. Someone saying something. Until I see some proof, I’ll reserve judgment.

Precursors are less of an issue being that they clearly announced that you’ll be able to craft them in an account bound way. My gripe is with RNG in general, hell even loadstones after 3 hours (not strait but still) one core? Lol /gg

I don’t mind RNG, just that it’s the only factor.
I posted my previous posts ideas in the suggestions section more In depth go check it out if you support Skill = Rewards https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/suggestions/Daily-exotic-drops-Challenging-content-idea/first#post2666997

@arjeidi
Don’t know if troll? But I’ll bite. Not much to get over really, I never said anything about being above the RNG system? I’m stating that skill should be awarded more so than dumb luck. This isn’t a pointless grind fest in fact grinding has been discouraged. nor is this a cow clicker like FarmVille or Simpsons tapped out, if I want to play some casual crack I’ll load up some TF2 and shoot the kitten without a care. This games design intention was a skill based action MMORPG with intentions of becoming an e-sport, if you didn’t sign up for either that then you have the wrong game.

True majority of content dosent require much and is very acessable to casuals, and that’s fine they can be here it helps to build community. But there is no reason why the proven to be skillful shouldn’t be rewarded for it. I’m not saying “get X Title get instant legendary” or anything unreasonable but the content currently encourages grind fests, zergs, and suffers for mandatory bad RNG.

I have a serious question for you, I’m not judging when I ask but are you bad or a true casual? But still get good drops?

I’m sure you’d feel less special if others got cool gear because they actually completed challanging content and worked for it since they were good. But there’d still have RNG for you and the scrubs so I don’t get the hostility from the comment/poor advice.
