References to popular culture in GW2 (possible quest spoilers)
In CoF path 2 there are magma elementals and it says something “Liquid Hot MAGMA”. When I read that, I instantly thought of Dr. Evil.
Also one huge one i forgot to mention. When i first heard of the city called Ebonhawke, I immediately thought of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, in which the main ship is called the Ebon Hawk.
In Harathi Hinterlands, you can find a small cave with bandit ghosts in them. If you fight your way in, you eventually find a book which describes what happened to the bandits. It ends, very fitting: “..they’re coming!”
Dont know if listed, but… SE story final boss death is a terminator 2 tribute.
What can be done of the “triforge” pendant?
Anyone has found any reference to any final fantasy?
I loved the “caen X” reference of witcher games lol
In Snowden Drifts ( Snowed In Drifts, lol so funny ), there is Hrothgar’s Pass. ( High Hrothgar, Skyrim anyone? ) Also, Hrothgar was a legendary Danish king.
The entire game is a reference … Guild Wars. This doesnt remind you of anything? Honestly, these connections are unavoidable given the limitations of our language.
The mole-whackers at Bloodcliff Quary.
The huge giant in Kessex Hill named Gort. I immediately thought of the giant in the old black and white version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. “Gort, Klaatu barada nikto!”
Mine is probably fairly obvious. Harathi Hinterlands. WoW reference possibly? Arathi Highlands and the Hinterlands?
some asurans sounding like barney
I just found this one but I was doing the story quest: ‘Reconnaissance’ and there’s an npc called Benn Tenstrikes which is a possible reference to the cartoon Ben 10?
Outpost in Metrica named Desider Ratum. Desiderata.
Vigil Instructor Forgal Kernsson is obvious reference to Thorgal Aegirsson from Thorgal comics;)
There’s a gravestone located in the graveyard just east of the entrance to Divinity’s Reach in the Human starting area…
Kah Meena
“His will be a sword
that pierces the Mists”
And I just nerded everywhere.
Think I might watch that now tonight while WubvWubbing
Well, there’s a few weapon names that reference weapons and things in RL mythology i.e. Bifrost, Mjolnir, Naegling, Caladbolg
On one escort quest in Orr, one of the NPC’s say “Work on supply they said. It’ll be fun they said.”
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
On one of Pact’s storyline (‘Further into Orr’ if I’m not wrong), when approaching the Pact’s forward base at Orr, a Vigil crusader who is standing guard at the side of the entrance will shout “THIS IS… (somewhat softer) …Vigil” XD
In Mount Maelstrom in the top right hand corner, there are some “ill Tempered Barracuda”. Am guessing they are in reference to Dr Evils “ill Tempered Bass” from Austin Powers.
Just wait and see when we get an event where a bald asura in gray coat is trying to get sharks with particle beams (cause lasers are sooo passeeee)
I think this is in Metrica Province. Two Asuran kids are reviewing the types of Hyleks. Red are “meanies”, yellows are sometimes nice and green and blue ones are fine. Something along those lines.
Reference to mob behaviors in GW2. Red will aggro, yellow are neutral, etc.
The human ‘raised by common folk’ story line features 2 characters named Andrew and Petra. Could be an Ender’s Game reference?
Aspiring Brotherhood [PACT]
Fort Aspenwood
In Plains of ashford there’s a sword in a stone with an unreadable engraving. In the same room is a Frog and a cat named Alfa.
Stealth Chrono Trigger reference? Magus’ cat was named Alfador.
In the Charr story quest “Down the Hatch”, you and Tybalt disguise as pirates to sneak through a pirate camp to rescue Demmi Beetlestone, the daughter of Minster Caudecus, who is being held captive. When you rescue her, she says, “Aren’t you a little sober to be a pirate?”
I can’t help but think that’s a reference to the scene from Star Wars where Luke and Han are disguised as Storm Troopers on the Death Star, and when they rescue Leia, she says, “Aren’t you a little short for a Storm Trooper?”.
In addition, after rescuing her, she helps you fight. Also makes me think of Leia taking the gun from Han and shooting the crap out of the Storm Troopers in the hallway.

Right after you wake up as a sylvari there’s a “one does not simply” line. I forget what it is specifacially but it has to do with dragon fighting
The line is, “One does not simply awaken and rush off to face a dragon!”
This line made me laugh on my first sylvari.
The “Alabama Song” although an old song going all the way back to 1927 was popularized by the ’Doors" in 1966. Its is also known as “The Last Whiskey Bar” which is a waypoint in the Blazeridge Steps.

that’s actually part of the OoW quest chain (did the same quest as an asura)
on topic: isn’t the skritt burglar a reference to similar creatures in diablo?
Timberline Falls – the jumping puzzle achievement is called “Only Zuhl”, a reference and quote from Ghostbusters.
Achievement “Ghost Buster” is a reference to Ghostbusters
Achievement “Sons of Savnir’s Bane” – the mouseover description is a reference to a line in the movie Starship Troopers. Replace “ice dragon cultist” with ‘bug’.
Achievement “Zahitan’s Bane” – reminds me of the famous line from Jaws, “going to need a bigger boat”. Don’t know if this was on-purpose or not.
Dont know if listed, but… SE story final boss death is a terminator 2 tribute.

Some of the great swords are clearly Final Fantasy inspired in their skins
Caledon Forest is based on the Roman name for Scotland (Caledonia) if my rubbish history recalls correctly. I have yet to see any caber tossing, kilt wearing warrior zerker NPCs in my travels there though (forgive the stereotype!)

I wonder if GW2 has the ‘Wilhelm Scream’ somewhere in it?
A video from the ‘Commando’ Guild Wars 2 class has it.
-Rayn Brightclaw, Tarnished Coast
Hrothgar’s Pass – Inheritance cycle series (Eragon), Hrothgar was king of the dwarves
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Naegling – This is Oromis’s sword who was the mentor of Eragon in the above series
