Define “good loot”

While leveling you are almost constanly finding good loot. That is loot with better stats than what you are currently wearing. At level 80 though, you can fully gear out your character in exotics through purchasing them. Exotics as drops are VERY rare. If you are counting on gearing up solely through drops, you are chasing a pipe dream.
The system was designed that way.

People are always complaining about “bad drops”. And bad drops referring to stuff that isnt worth much on the TP. However if those things dropped more frequently, then prices drop and beco e next to worthless. Then we are back in the same place saying loot sucks.

Either we have lots of trolls here, or most of the ppl simply don’t get it.
Three easy examples:
1. Silverwaste Events → No drops at all, maybe grey stuff
2. Personal Story enemies → No drops
3. Unidentified Dyes → Not dropping anymore, not from enemies nor from plants

Just to annoy some of the new players here: When I started GW2, I got my Abyss dye from a level 17 zentaur in Kessex Hills. Yes, there were times when you got good things from regular enemies.

also, EVERY mob dropped loot. There wasn’t a single mob in the game that didn’t drop anything. No matter what you killed you had a chance at good loot. nce they added “champ bags” and other loot levels, they also added in tiers of no loot mobs. Event mobs now almost are ALL “no drop” where they used to be 100% drop.

A SilverWastes level event at the beginning of the game would have gotten you multiple bags (i.e 20-50 slots worth) of loot per event, instead of 8 bandit crest and some worthless ascended mats.

Then he should have said it was specific areas, not implied the whole game.

1) Silverwastes. Maybe take out the bandit chests and all the goodies from them and the rewards for doing the events and add loot drops like the rest of the maps. Would that be better?
2) personal story. Those get loot at the end. Give them to an char at the right level and the loot can be pretty good.
3) unidentified dyes. Removed as drops because the dyes were made account bound when used. That’s better in my opinion as one dye now covers all your alts and most dyes are between 3 and 4 silver. It’s bad for those that are making Bifrost, but the requirements for that was decreased for that reason.

I’ve played since beta. So, if you mean I’m new, you’re quite wrong. And mobs do definitely drop loot; they only don’t drop loot in personal/living story instances and for certain events in Silverwastes, since that change some months ago.

There are a few other smaller cases that don’t drop loot (ie. Taza at the end of SE p1), but they’re not the norm.

For the areas mentioned to have the enemies drop loot, they would have to be reworked. You’re simply not going to have the Silverwastes give you loot from bandit chests, event rewards and have the mobs drop loot. Either the chests or the event rewards, or both, would be removed and there is no guarantee it will be better. It might end up with people killing mobs for loot instead of doing the events and progressing towards the boss event, which is probably exactly why they don’t drop loot.

The personal story can’t drop loot as some of the mobs spawn unendingly and they were being farmed. To stop that the personal story gives bags of loot at the end, which is quite adequate for the amount of work done. Since the contents of the bags scale they can be given to an alt of a particular level to get the best results.

Unidentified dye, yeah they could have made it a drop. However it would have be a rare drop in order not to crash the prices since demand is so much less with the account bound dyes.

I would rather have open world mobs drop loot than be rewarded at the end of the event for several reasons: 1) It discourages players from afking at forts in SW and VW. 2) Even if you only get whites/blues/greens, they’re still worth more than the piles of sand and bloodstone you get 90% of the time from events. 3) The MF buffs will actually be useful.

But it looks like ANet is going with reward chests and champ bags only from now on. Might as well remove MF from the game.

Even in the Silverwastes there are PLENTY of mobs that drop loot. I get T6 mats (which is loot by anyone’s standard) in the Silverwastes by killing the creatures there that aren’t part of events…hyenas, devourers, even the boars.

So if you’re doing events and you take time to kill a few of the other creatures you’ll get drops.

Generally speaking, however, people aren’t mostly complaining that the Silverwastes aren’t profitable, so the whole point of the OP is moot.

If absolutely no mobs in Silverwastes (and Dry Top) drop no loot (except occasional grey items), how did all those people get into the CBE, and why did some of them get 1000 Gems as compensation?

I am pretty sure not everyone got access from a bag or a chest. In fact, I am positive.

Also, wasn’t chest/bag drops implemented to help alleviate people from purposely failing events to farm never-ending spawns of mobs? Did we want those arguments/conflicts back?

It’s a problem when you are working on your alts. Your first character is coin poor and you actually got excited when gear got dropped that was both better than what you have and you could actually use it. Your 2nd character and beyond, you’re cash rich, likely, and simply buy decent gear off the TP for them which is likely to be better than any drop they get. You get into the habit of selling or salvaging anything green or lower and only cursory glance at yellow and orange gear before doing the same.

Tough to get excited when virtually everything dropped is considered beneath your notice.

People keep on asking for good loot, but they never say what they mean by it. Tell us. Give us some examples.

Good loot is useful. Items you can use (ideal), or sell/trade for what you want. There’s a ton of things in this game, and most are virtually worthless while the remainder are entirely too exclusive.

You keep it good by tweaking drop rates to an acceptable level. Ascended chests should drop about at least a third of the frequency of Exotics. And put some of the good exotics into ordinary loot tables instead of Zommoros’ toilet. Account bind them if necessary to safeguard the TP.

Back in 2013 I recall getting some half decent stuff. Some sort of ticket for a Dragon Jade weapon dropped during the first Dragon Bash. Holographic wings and a mini did too, from regular mobs in COE. We need more stuff like this. Things we would actually use.

Once your character is geared up, most of the drops are no longer going to be “good loot”. In a game without constant gear progression, it’s going to be really hard to give people useful loot. Mine were geared up as soon as they hit level 80 so very little was good loot after that. How do you get a fully geared char good, useful loot?

The ascended? Again, not much use after you’re geared up and too high a drop rate of these guts the prices for the mats needed to craft them, which means less gold to those that sell mats and less incentive to craft them. So there are economic reasons to be careful with their drop rate since it was intended for us to craft them and not have them rain from the sky.

The other option you mentioned is the specialty event drops. I never did get a dragon jade weapon, in spite of much farming, buying of chests, and frustration. The holographic wings dropped so frequently they were only a few gold in the trading post. I’m not sure if either of these qualifies as a good system, being either feast or famine.

When fully geared it’s the skins that matter. Which is why I suggest that all non-BLTC or specialty (Fractal and Event) skins should be added to the loot tables. For example, maybe have peacemaker and warden weapons drop from mobs in Maguuma. Those mystic forge only weapons? Yeah, put ‘em in champ bags. The drop rate would still be pretty low, and they’d be account bound. But at least it’s a chance at something.

I think ascended gear has had a long enough run as craft-only. I’m not suggesting that they rain from the sky, just set the drop rate significantly lower than exotics but higher than precursors. Someone who plays an hour or two daily should reasonably expect one or two of them every week. That wouldn’t diminish the need to craft, since most people will opt for a reliable approach anyway.

Someone who plays an hour or two daily should reasonably expect one or two of them every week. That wouldn’t diminish the need to craft, since most people will opt for a reliable approach anyway.

So, what you’re asking, if I understand you correctly, is more exotics to drop, for both the purpose of good stats for those who don’t have exotics yet and as skins, and more ascended to drop, up to 1 ascended chests every 7 hours or so (your numbers, from your suggestion of 1 or 2 every 7 to 14 hours). How would that not decrease the need to craft them if people get them at that rate? I certainly wouldn’t, not at 1 every 7 hours. Also to make the high level karma cultural weapons to drop, (which makes karma even more useless imo if it’s not even used to buy these).

How long do these good drops remain good drops? Too low a rate and people complain about never getting anything, just like now. Too high and once you get one of them, the second is worthless and soon enough people are complaining about bad drops they can’t even sell. Too many exotics and the prices in the TP drop to below one gold (and the exotics are no longer considered good drops since they are selling so cheap).

I still suspect a good part of the problem is people coming from gear progression games where most gear does come from drops and the game is changed up often enough to keep people chasing gear. Here, once you’re geared up most drops are no longer useful and that leaves cosmetic. But, that then requires the game to frequently make new skins for free to make the drops good, otherwise the players quickly enough get all the skins, unless the drops are rare enough it can take years to get them all.

I wonder also if many don’t come from subscription games where the game gets a steady payment from everyone and so has the resources to develop and then give away free skins on a continuing basis so that people can always have good loot. With a buy to play game like this, they may not have the budget to be giving away skins on a regular basis.

You are aware the precursors have the same drop rate as exotics yeah? The odds of getting one are much lower, but since they are exotic, they are on the exotic drop table.

1 or 2 ascended drops per week for playing 1-2hrs a day!? Crazy. Look how much time it would take you to farm the materials to craft one piece, add up the amount of mobs killed to get the materials, then divide 100 by that amount. That should be the drop rate in a percentage chance per mob kill. It is probably already higher than that.

One ascended chest or so a week won’t break the game. Even with exotics, its exceedingly rare to get an item with the stats you want (for most of us, this means Berserker or Assassin). It would still take months to have a full set of anything. But you are probably right about the drop rate. Perhaps an average of one chest every 24 hours of game play instead.

I don’t really have a good frame of reference for reasonable expecations in MMOs. This is by far the longest I have stuck with one. In other games though, I do remember getting items more ‘organically’ and being a lot more excited about drops. Play stuff and eventually find a ‘+3 Sword of kittendom’ or something. Here we just get loads and loads of absolute junk dumped on us with valuable but boring and predictable titbits tossed in. Even half the exotics have the same ugly skins as level 1 weapons. There’s no middle ground.

First, they broke the promise, and only unlocked the dye per character.
Then, they made them account bound at last, but removed them as drops.

0. Never did OP state that this was only about SW, LS, PS an Unidentified dyes. So yes, I remember I got loot worth more than 15g yesterday. Even more if I wanted to sell some other loot.

1. In SW there are no drops but all events rewards you with Crests wich you can buy loot bags with if you want to. You also get loot bags from event and alot of other stuff. It’s a way to make events more interesting than just for Karma and for fun.

2. This was nerfed long ago becouse playersabused it to farm some instances. Better rewards have been given to compleate a PS and LS.

3. Well they do not drop anymore but you can actually farm them… You get Unidentified Dyes from Bag of loot ( http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bag_of_Loot_ ) I have about 25 Unidentified dyes in my bank and over 100 bags of loot (Yes I am a hoarder in this game).

4. What does it matter where you get your loot from? As long as we get loot from somewhere. Atleast I am not forced to farm in this game but I am happy to see that this stupid grinding the same mobs over and over again is comming to an end.

I am not trolling, I disagree with OP as OP states that there are no more drops in the game. Also I give my Opinion to remove loot drops if they do that to the rest of the content of the game. Agree or Disagree, call me white knight or fanboy but do not call me a troll.

Truly. Define good loot and how do you keep it as good loot when all the other players are also getting this good loot.

Well the trick to that is the gear treadmill. It gives the illusion of ‘good loot’ and by introducing new tiers you keep it ‘good’.
Just to be clear I’m not saying we need it, just answer you’re question which in hindsight was probably rhetorical.

To be fair, the OP made a pretty sweeping, completely inaccurate statement. Detail is required if a discussion was required.

But hyperbole tends to draws more attention. Even though it’s not technically hyperbole.

I like how instead of fixing the poorly thought out design that resulted in ‘unlimited event spawns’, they gutted loot tables completely.

Which I assume was the fix.

Also to make the high level karma cultural weapons to drop, (which makes karma even more useless imo if it’s not even used to buy these)

Personally, I don’t see getting an ascended chest that has items I can’t use because of bad stats as a good drop, unless maybe it’s for the skins and that’s what you are thinking. I would rather they kept the same drop rate or maybe a little better and made the stats selectable. Then it would be a good drop. Most people are disappointed when they get an ascended chest and making a disappointing item drop more frequently isn’t the answer to the bad loot problem.

The +3 sword of Kittendom, was that from a gear progression game? Because it’s hard to have these items in a static gear game. I’m not even sure how they would do it in this game with its static gear and all the variety of stats that aren’t right for your build. How would they get equivalent items to the players on a consistent basis? Which imo, brings it back to cosmetics. If the skins drop frequently and are sellable, prices crash. If not sellable, the second one is worthless. If not desired, each account bound one is a bad drop. In each case people will complain about bad loot. In addition, with a high drop rate, people quickly enough get what they want, and after that the loot again is unwanted and bad.

The other problem I see is budget. Can ANet afford to pay its artists to make new skins and then give the skins away for free to keep up with player demand for good loot? This isn’t a subscription based game where they get your money each month. This is a “sell cosmetics to players” game. They would have to redo their economic basis to be handing out new free skins as an ongoing answer to complaints about bad loot.

I personally don’t see a way around the problems of frequent but cheap drops or frequent but account bound. Either path will have people calling the drops bad.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Mobs still give good loot, manage to catch a temple train yesterday an did 4 temples. By the time I was done I had about 20 rares, 2 exotics, a bunch of t6 mats, customary blues and greens, and a good old BL chest. You just have to know what events are still worth doing.

I just wish Anet would stop filling my inventory with junk. Seriously, the game even calls it junk and I have to run to a vendor a sell that junk. Why not just give is the silver we would have gotten for that junk directly and eliminate the unnecessary steps.

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”

I’d call that statistically lucky. As someone who is statistically UNlucky, those same 4 temple runs will get me 2-3 rares, tops (outside of the bonus chests). Definitely no exotics. Lots and lots of blues and greens and outright junk…

Remember when people didn’t abuse unlimited spawns in instances to get massive amounts of loot?

Massive amounts of loot? You must be speaking about a different game, right?

Actions, not words.

Being able to kill an unlimited amount of mobs without even moving did generate rather massive amounts of loot rather fast yes.
