Risk Vs Reward: Reward what Reward?
I see some saying that in GW1 Anet removed drops etc, that’s not entirely true, DR was put into the game to hit at the 55hp builds ( monk/ sins/ necros ) from solo farming, but some spots where left alone so that people could farm all day, and still get a fairly decent return.
Im not sure if this is Anets fault because they want us to play their game how they want, or NCSoft because they want to squeeze as much $$$ out of it before it crashes and burns, I don’t believe for 1 minute that Anet dev’s are reading this forum and saying to bad, because they have spent the best part of 5 years making this game, for it to crash and burn in what a year, cannot see that happening,
Fact is, they cannot fix it, they shouldn’t have started to mess with it in the first place, what did they seriously think would happen when they removed most of the loot from all high end zones, ( all of ORR, frostgorge is kinda iffy atm, SScove is dead since the last patch )
Dungeons, in GW where fun, and the rewards for the time spent for the most part where worth it, in GW2, I hate the dungeons, I did them all for the title, and haven’t been back to them unless a friend etc needs it, there is NO reward for the time spent, Arah should always DROP a rare of higher at the end, ( infact all end chests should ) to spend an hour plus in there for blues is a joke,
FotM rewards are a joke, infact I think this probably needs removed from the game, its bugged all over and has been ignored for months,
WvW, rewards are a joke also, get rank up chests that take a few hours to get ( time pending ) for a green and some silver, REALLY, i could if i wanted just go stand at SB, Maw, Wurm etc and get the same reward in less than 10 minutes, with a guaranteed RARE, yes WvW is not for farming, but what incentive is there to go to it…. some people only play WvW, are they not entitled to loot, i see that some people said well pre cursors drop in WvW, me and my friends have done a lot of WvW, and none of us have seen such a drop.
There is a rumor of a revamped reward system coming, but I can see this pushing towards world events in which case if your at work/school/sleeping when they happen to bad you still get no loot,
Like many others me and my friends are now looking for a new game, and we are advising all other friends not to pick this game up, there really is nothing to do in it. If in the event any dev does every read this, its a major concern echo’d across your community, you should take the time to address this concern before you have no one left to address it too, MMO’s can grow and die very fast.

Still waiting on their rewards revamp I was told about. I thought it might have been loaded in this patch but apparently not.
At this point there’s nothing for me to do but wait months from now and check back to see what they’ve done with the game. Maybe then they’ll have improved it to the point it’s joined the modern games in regards to balance in PVE, rewards, ui elements, economy. Until then I guess the only thing to do is to just wait and play something else.
Since they said the end of the summer, I can’t imagine why you’d think it would be in this patch.
IMO the lack of reward is a major result of the lack of vertical progression.
Blue’s, green’s and even yellows (to some extent) are rendered virtually worthless, because of how easy it is to gain max gear.
If they made exotics only drop at the end of a difficult dungeon (and not drop for everyone, every time), and rares only drop throughout difficult content (such as group event chains, dungeons etc), then more people would be wearing blues and greens once they hit 80. They’d have to work to get the higher tiers and every time you run and got a rare (or even a mildly better green) you’d be excited!
This would apply if it wasn’t for the fact that the lack of exotics is the reason why i would get my butt kicked. Exotics are sooooooo much better than greens and golds that you would lose a fight in WVW due to the simple fact of them having better gear then you. Simple as that.
Yes, that is the major problem with balancing PvE and PvP equally.
The rewards are only considered poor, because we already have something better. It’s all relative.
I’m pretty much forced to agree that rewards could be better.
When I started playing, from open beta to roughly four or so months after release (when I took a break for a few months due to work), drops appeared to be much more plentiful in terms of quality than they are now (with the exception of vials of blood for early crafting, which was a pain back then). Now, even running around with double the MF I had back then, the drops have been nerfed to oblivion as far as I can tell.
My complete guess is that some time after launch, it was determined that shinies (exotics, some crafting mats, etc) dropped too frequently to create longevity in the game, and so loot tables for those things were tweaked downwards. I’m also not a fan of DR – not because I’m a pro farmer, but because sometimes I think I hit it without trying very hard to, and because it punishes players who like that playstyle at the expense of making things harder for bots and the like. I also think it borks the economy by creating an artificial scarcity of materials that means it is almost never profitable to craft something by buying the mats instead of selling the mats you get, and too time-consuming and annoying to go out and farm those mats yourself because of DR. (Before it’s mentioned that this is common in MMOs, in WoW once the economy stabilises after an expansion you certainly can make a lot of money from crafting, even by buying up the mats yourself from the AH because players farm the base materials to sell for profit, which lowers their cost due to greater supply).
I genuinely think it wasn’t the same game I came back to in December that I put on the back burner back in October or so of last year in terms of reward.
I think it’s fine to get blue/green whatever trash loot from trash and in general it’s pretty balanced overall COMPARED TO risk, which is non-existant usually. Just think about quaranteed rare drops from world bosses you get from pressing #1. As long as you don’t miss that spawn window which is funny.
Here’s few things I would like to see:
- PVE World boss events will take a long event chain so people can actually notice them and catch up, instead of checking some website for timer. Every event in chain would have reward enough so you feel that it’s profitable to do whole chain instead of waiting for boss to spawn. Even if you would miss the final boss for some reason you might also get a little reward.
- Dungeon explorable modes should be level 80, also dungeons should have more unique and useful rewards, also like consumables or crafting mats etc.
- Doing “little things” in WvW should be much more rewarding instead of mindless zerging. It’s more challenging and expensive to go solo or in small group. You get rolled over a lot unless you play trollmode thief etc. Zerging gives you at least 10 times more badges and gold compared to roaming. That’s way too much when you compare skill and dedication required. Fun is just not enough to keep it going forever.
- PvP REALLY. wtf. There’s no rewards in pvp. Why would anyone do it except for testing builds before getting exo gear for wvw. There is just no real reason except if you are in endless queue for wvw on medium/high pop server. All you possibly get is random skins you can only use in pvp areas. Or you want useless title. That’s just too lame.
- Precursor and whatever neat loot. They’re just too random. Really. If I want to make legendary x I should be able to work forward to get one, eventually. It’s just too random just to hear some random guy got 2 precursors from mystic lottery in 10 minutes after he played maybe 2 months or whatanot. I understand it probably needs to be random if they can drop everywhere but chances are way off limits, especially if your playstyle is not producing much loot over time. This also goes for normal rare and exotic drops. They’re extremely rare unless you grind with magic find or whatever.
Also this game should have much more open pvp areas or whatsoever but that’s another story. Generally I am just enjoying 2 different areas in game, hello world.
Loot is absolutely fine. If you are an RP’er you can start an imaginary shop where you sell various items crafted from porous bone and globby goop. You would be instantly rich beyond your wildest dreams.
This is why I’m playing PSO 2 more now as Sega did a good job on these respect to loot, playability, risk and reward. Sure there are some aspects I don’t like such as, if you are premium you may have some benefits the free players don’t get such as, your own shop for up to 90 days vs 3 using a RNG lottery to get that said 3 day pass, your own room for up to 90 days vs 3 though the same method as the shop (yet its easier to get a ticket to drop for this than the shop). But to counter that RNG is the fact logging every day give points and stuff to spend on this very limited RNG stuff and its only 100 points ( called fun) a try and they are slowly adding new methods and ways to get stuff. Also you can just buy everything with in-game money from other players as we do here and I mean Everything even with a basic free account!
Extra Character slots cost money each and every time you need to reset or remake from the same one a bit more strict than here. So does storage cost money like here. (3 extra expansions of 300+ each) and storage in the bank is set to 30, 60, or 90 days as well.
Also skill resetting costs real money yet they do have methods in place to work around it via events and giveaway campaigns for free resets and what not as improvements come along.
But if you don’t care about being perfect its a non issue.
As for loot, if you kill something or someone else kills something, something always drops unless you die and leave the area or you are not present for the kill. Kills and drops are individualized to you so no fighting over mobs or exp, on most circumstances as certain quests need a certain kill type so you may need to work together and stuff.
You could even leech off others the whole game if you want as there is no penalty to exp or loot that way. I know Anet is against botting and leeching, but PSO 2 has no bots as they have a very powerful anti cheat thing called Game Guard (which has its own meddle some problems with other processes that aren’t even harmful— whole other story). If anet changed how akitteng and leeching is perceived, maybe healers/support will be rewarded better They get almost no credit for not attacking and just supporting? Here I can be a Force (a caster class) and only heal and support and get equal exp to my friends for a kill.
Risk and reward are another thing that’s better. Rares drop pretty often as its based on a set drop rate and less reliant on RNG, like a foe has 1/5 chance to drop, it will drop in 5 kills.
Rarity is based on a 1- 16 star system on all items. Higher stars doesn’t neccssary mean better loot/gear. 7 and 8 star rares drop easier than 9-12 and on low difficulties. 9-11 drop from high difficulties. 12 and above are not out yet. 10 can be gotten as loot bought from others or an in game shop (requires premium for getting from other players and a certain boss collection item for the others).
Why can’t we have innovative loot systems like this? It will get us spread out more by making certain things drop from certain level maps.
You will get 7 star rares very early (as early as lv 2) and you can buy a lot of good stuff cheaply as the game is 1 year old.
The exp curve is a bit more grindy as GW 2’s but its more fun anyways as there is many ways to earn exp and its all fun. Large events happen at random every 2 hours which have large scale quests or battles vs bosses or shorter game areas to get to said bosses which may be tougher than normal through progression and normal play.
As for Cosmetics: everything goes on top of your armor! There is no separate slots for accessories or costumes. Your costumes are your armor skin. Armor is modular with attachments that can be hidden when worn. Fun lottery or pay real cash and the pay lottery and direct buy from others is the only methods for costumes and stuff besides the default 3 or 4 skins you start with based on class. There are campaigns that give free cosmetics as well so its not any different than here in that respect. Yet is less RNG then it is here. I don’t think i have been disappointed yet even though i buy everything in game.
Also a player can dual class (after a certain level and progression into the story/game) and play all 6 classes on one toon!
Pros:
100% exp and loot for supporting/leeching
100% drop anything rates. You get almost get something every kill unless you die or are not present in that monster’s range.
Fun ways to do everything.
Events every week. Giveaways every week.
No bugs
No cheaters/botters/hackers.
You get a permanent limited size room for free on July 17.
RNS is non existent except for high end rares and loot.
Dual classing and use all classes on one character.
High difficulties yield better loot and rares pure risk/reward done right!
Cons:
Cash shop is more strict and has more P2W elements.
You can’t remake an extra character slot without repaying for it. Free one July 17 but don’t remake/delete on it!
EXP curve is a bit more grindy.
Character resets cost real money
Extra skill trees (for other builds) cost real money.
Maybe Anet should play other games and see where they went wrong and went right.
Only thing I see they went right at is the cash shop in GW 2 at this time its far better and non wealthy player friendly.
I’ll still play GW 2 (have friends here and friend in PSO 2) but it needs some serious improvements to risk/reward systems and the way exp is given to support players. I’m not posting this reply to sway anyone, its just my enthusiasm is so high right now and a better breath of fresh air and relief when playing the other game vs GW 2.
Its my opinion and it should stay that way.
Maybe s good way to start making GW 2 better reward wise is to have heals do splash damage or direct damage (healing rain has an acid rain effect to foes)? I dunno you decide!
