So, as you’ve probably noticed ANet, a very big part of the community is unhappy about some of the changes introduced by the feature pack, including:

  • New leveling system
  • Personal story rework
  • Re-introducing bugs
  • Camera auto-adjusting and moving on its own will
  • Gone minis
  • Non-sense nerf on particular skills
  • Breaking auto-login
  • Stealth changes to HotW story mode, CoE story mode, Arah Path 2, toggling the paths to be impossible to complete
  • Stealth changes to Twilight Arbor Up where the Nightmare Tree doesn’t do AoE spike attack and the number of Nightmare turrets is significantly reduced
  • Stealth changes to Fractals

As well as not addressing problems that have been around:

  • No rework on the terrible traits system
  • Bugs that have been reported repeatedly and are yet not fixed

And if I have to be honest about the feature pack, I have to admit that I’m absolutely loving the fact that you merged guild instances that were spread out, but apart from that, the whole feature pack seems more like “Lets get stuff out while throwing dust in their eyes by changing the UI”

As a QA team leader in an IT company and a passionate PvE player of GW2, I have one very simple question to ask: What does your QA/Testing team consist of? There’s no way, a person could miss the newly introduced Arah pt2 bug. The only logical explanation to me would be that either your team performed very simple unit testing and passed on the regression testing as a whole or that they’re the worst PvE players I’ve seen if they can’t do the skip to Belka (Solution: Give them guardians running in full nomad and 4 hours so they can kill all the mobs to Belka if you have to!).

Please, ANet, realize that many of the changes are unwanted and unnecessary. I love this game so much that I used to spend 10+ hours per day on it but now I just feel disappointed and discouraged to play it any longer. Please, listen to your player base.

Actually they may very well care what players think. But some players don’t think the changes are bad and I’m one of them. I didn’t like the initial trait changes, and think they need work. But this recent change is better for me as an altoholic.

OP, you might not understand why, but I wouldn’t want to go back to how it was. I prefer this current method (though the trait system still needs serious adjustment).

They probably haven’t tested Arah because they didn’t change anything in Arah.
That said, how do they manage to break the path then?

Vayne, maybe you’re right, I haven’t stated that the whole player base wants that. I still haven’t tried out the new leveling system but the hundreds of posts about it plus the videos I’ve been watching create an image of something very tedious in my head. As for the traits changes, this is totally out of the question for me, it requires either full re-work or complete rollback.

There’s no way, a person could miss the newly introduced Arah pt2 bug.

They obviously did since the path is broken now. If you’re going to do something in the shadows, such as stealth changes, you have to be twice as wary that something might go wrong. Obviously, no one realized that.

You mean spamming 1 all through the inital instance is good? You think that locking mechanics like the downstate until level 5 is good? Do you think locking the unique class mechanics is good? Hell, the ranger still has his pet since level 1, he just can’t control it. That’s utter nonsense. I really don’t see, not in the slightest, how the “A Fresh Start” changes should help anyone.

It caters to newbies. Apparently anet wants to cater to those newbies because adding 4 more skills per weapons is very overwhelming to grasp. :P

So yea some likes it some dont. Even though majority didnt like it, on anet’s viewpoint newbies like it and they can milk more gems from those newbies than veterans

Imo those who wants either cant handle 5skills at once or fanboys because if youre a veteran i think you will feel that the new leveling system is very very stupid. Spammimg auto attack for the first few levels.

I think the term you’re looking for is regression testing. The UI changes might not seem like much but they are definitely game changing. It’s also hard to measure the impact that collections is having on the game. People that weren’t motivated to do anything before might actually have something to look forward to now.

Hell, the ranger still has his pet since level 1, he just can’t control it. That’s utter nonsense. I really don’t see, not in the slightest, how the “A Fresh Start” changes should help anyone.

It took me less time with less skills to level than it does in the old method, but there’s more.

There were so many dead levels before. So many times I got, before the first feature patch, where I was leveling and I’d look and think, oh look 3 trait points. You didn’t even know you were leveling. It was like…nothing. No feeling of getting anything.

Unlocking the stuff this way, the feeling of progression is better for some people out of the box, even if they have several alts. If you don’t think many people like bells and whistles and SOMETHING when they level, you might be surprised. In fact, in the old system, if you didn’t note what your stats were and what they became you might not even know your stats had increased. Now you do…but it’s more than that.

I’ve been thinking about it, and thinking about the free weekends Anet hardly ever gives away. Why? Because those free weekends for people to try the game would maybe bring new players…but not if knew players couldn’t see definite progress early on like you see in most MMOs.

The leveling is fast enough anyway, if you enjoy it. It’s not fast enough if you don’t. But some people enjoy leveling alts and I’m one of them. I enjoy it more when I see change as I go.

It doesn’t matter to me if I don’t have skills 5-10 for a while, because I don’t actually need those skills to level. I’m trying it on a ranger now, but next I’ll try a mesmer to see if it’s too hard with the unlocks they give you.

Probably engineers have it the worst because of the kit situation. But so far, I’m enjoying it more. And if it helps people stay after free weekends, then I’m definitely all for it because no game is going to move forward if it doesn’t attract new people.

That’s a good business decision that long term is also better for me. Particularly now that we’ve seen games like ESO and Wildstar not doing as well.

Everyone seems to think the biggest MMO market are those people who already play MMOs. I’m convinced this market can grow and I’m convinced the new player experience is the way to go about growing it.

yes, you mentioned you like getting something new every time you leveled, and unlocking things, i meant collecting the skills, and seeing progress with every level. Point is, they could have added things like that without neutering the more natural leveling experience.

there was nothing good about realizing that i should ignore every enemy in the inital instance, and that i would get nothing useful out of killing the centuars before the area boss. Walking around with 2 skills sucked, and 3 skills was like eh. Getting a blue warhorn than i couldnt actually equip until level 7. i hit 12 and i didnt even have a utility yet. (for engineer this is a huge blow)

I get that you like seeing new stuff when you level up, but there is nothing better about having skills locked out, and making the game feel like you should be trying as hard as possible to level as fast as you can. They could have added new interesting stuff for you to get/do as you level up that wasnt basic skills, like downed skill 2 and 3.

Saying that the majority did’nt like it is misleading. Yes, the majority on these forums, those actually posting (usually those that are upset) dont like it. But that is just a fraction of the playerbase. So what the real statistics are, we can’t really say.

That being said, i am not defending nor bashing the changes. I have to let them sink in before i really can deside wether it is good or not. If i always would act on my first feelings in life, i would be a very angry and miserable person.

I really don’t get the points you mentioned. Back in the days, levelups gave one traitpoint each, but it was changed. They can give me additional reward, I don’t mind if they do. But locking already existing features only to give tham back later as oh so wonderful stuff is stupid.
And you say that people who try the game during free weekends could get confused?
I for one would not play the game if I have to sacrifice a whole day of this weekend only to get all the basic things the game offers.
I would create a new character and see 5 possible weapon skills but only one that I can use. The whole first instance I’m sitting there pressing 1. That would make me uninstall the game immediately.

Much like the game proceeding it, once you hit the end of the story and didn’t want to enter PvP or such? Yeah, that’s all there was left. Find the Elite Skills, cartography (heh), vanquishing, or getting the Hall of Monuments filled with shinies.

ESO and Wildstar have systems closer to this, except they actually have more things that matter to give players. One of the big complaints for both was that it takes so long to get a rounded out charachter and really see how it plays.

The dead levels in GW2 were mostly dead for me due to lack of new interesting goals/content. Completing hearts and getting waypoints is something you have done 20 times by the time your level 30+ They didnt have a strong narrative or interesting goals in the middle of the game. Making the basic stuff into those goals isnt really good, especially when the answer to achieving those goals is grind faster.

You will not find leveling too hard, they nerfed the game to compensate, its just a lot more boring, and a lot more focused on leveling.

and the kicker is, i dont believe they will keep more players with these changes, many people left the game because they found it dull, with not enough going on, and no clear direction. And not a lot to do.
that hasnt changed, many people wanted more, and you give them the same amount over a longer period,

i dont see this being successful at retaining new players.

I’m convinced the sense of progression and it is a sense of progression is better than how it was, and I’m convinced long term it’ll probably be better for most players, even though at the beginning, it definitely won’t feel that way to everyone. Because people get used to A and think they A is how it has to be.

All the people who complain they don’t have all their skills while leveling aren’t convincing me that they’re using all their skills while leveling.

The standard complaints about this game usually involve the open world being way too easy. It’s much easier with everything unlocked. But you can still pretty much 1 your way through everything if that’s what you want to do and you know how to kite.

Yes there are probably people who do use those other skills but I’m not convinced they’re the majority. People are doing other things often while leveling alts and they just get into a mindless rhythm of moving and killing and the buttons seldom even matter. You don’t really need them. You had them so you want to have them now. But it doesn’t change much…not really.

If anything it makes it a tiny tiny bit more challenging, but not enough to help people who want challenge and not enough to justify the strength of the complaints against it.

I’ve seen a good lot of threads with people who hate this change, but I count about 20 people who seem to appear in most of them, saying similar things over and over.

I’m not seeing the same outcry on reddit (and reddit did freak with some of the other recent stuff).

So I’m attributing this to growing pains and not serious issues. We’ll see if I’m wrong or not down the road.

Totally right, one of the better examples in gaming are all the Diablo-games (very populars). That use as a pillar the need for reward, can describe it as anxiety perphaps, that way the players can kill waves of mobs just for the instant gratification of loot.

Actually my favorite part of the new patch so far is the new leveling experience, not the collections.

The small changes are nice, the big ones aren’t.

I noticed a popup showing me how to dodge (on my level 80 Mesmer while sitting outside Caudecus’ Manor). I headed over to the location and it showed a Ring with a Chest in the center. An NPC states that it would be dandy if you could get to the chest, perhaps by rolling past the circle.

I did it and got rewarded with some blue shoes that were level 0. It really brought back the feeling of the training area in Elona where you pick your secondary profession. I liked it, but the thing is…

I still don’t think you should forcibly level-gate. I understand introducing things one at a time, but you don’t need to turn them off. Downed state being turned off is actually really annoying to me. Why? Because the combat sort of revolves around the player having that second health bar.

While I do agree, in respect to the downed state, it can be very confusing, frustrating, and unintuitive; I have stated my resolution to that problem multiple times. Add the skills to your weapon skills so you can read up on them. Perhaps add a tutorial downed state, similar to the dodge roll in Queensdale, to allow players to see, first hand, how downed works and play around with it. Obviously, they would have to create a scenario where players would regenerate just enough health to not die while downed, but also notice that they’re getting hurt.

The skills unlocking slower seemed like a big deal at first, but then I sort of went with it and realized it was kind of fun getting a new skill as I leveled up, instead of by killing things. However, disallowing offhand weapons until level 7 kind of ruins the point of having offhands lower than level 7. Additionally, the stat disparity between one and two handeds becomes more apparent (half the stats), making newer players benefit greatly from wearing their two handed option instead. This isn’t a big deal, but most newer players won’t know this, and it can potentially make the game harder.

I think they had the right idea introducing things one at a time, through the level-up menu, but by gating things (even more), and also playing around with the stats, they inadvertently screwed things up.

A lot of these changes are fine by themselves, but I think together, they are not what the game or newer players need. Especially when put in the context of the game’s systems (downleveling, scaling, etc paired with stat lumps on level-up instead of slow growth).

I love how people take one paragraph out of a whole respond and then try to claim the answer is stupid. Totally out of context.

I’m not saying it’s better because it’s more challenging. I’m saying that the complaints about it being harder are quite silly to me. At least to me it wasn’t much harder at all. It’s all the other stuff that makes the change good for me.

The standard complaints about this game usually involve the open world being way too easy. It’s much easier with everything unlocked. But you can still pretty much 1 your way through everything if that’s what you want to do and you know how to kite.

Breaking News: All weapon skill get removed to make the game more challenging!
Seriously, that’s a stupid answer. Making the game more challenging by cutting the ability of the player to react properly to certain situations?

Actually they may very well care what players think. But some players don’t think the changes are bad and I’m one of them. I didn’t like the initial trait changes, and think they need work. But this recent change is better for me as an altoholic.

OP, you might not understand why, but I wouldn’t want to go back to how it was. I prefer this current method (though the trait system still needs serious adjustment).

Please watch this video of what exactly new players are walking into. It’s hilariously painful to watch.

This doesn’t “do anything” to me. I’m not sure why you think it could. Let’s see, a guy with a nice voice, who is dripping with sarcasm tries to make a patch look stupid with opinions. I’m not quite through with it yet, but at least some of it I have to question immediately. Like not being able to die in the tutorial instance. That’s not knew because I’ve known about that for like a year. Except that the video is attributing it to this patch. So, if you don’t have your facts correct to start with, why should I believe the rest of it?

The reason I think they did that is because there are no waypoints in the tutorial, btw.

All this does is show me a guy who doesn’t get it.

To be sure not every single change is going to be perfect. I don’t think that the elite needs to be held off until 40, but the truth is, it makes very very little difference in the game to me. Very little.

But all the little things I’m getting while getting up to forty make a quite nice difference in the game for me.

So what made you think that video would affect me at all?

Edit: Finished watching the video. Clearly the buggy pointer is a major probably in the charr starting area and needs to be fixed. I’ve been playing in Queensdale and I’ve had no problems with the pointer at all it’s working as intended.

Definitely bugged in The Black Citadel. And it’s a crappy bug. So Anet will fix it. I hope the guy took a second to report the bug, instead of just making a video.

Still doesn’t change most of what I’ve said.

I haven’t even had a chance to think about anything else in the patch because of how angry I am about the mini-pets being demoted in the culling rules. Some of us buy mini-pets to show them off just like someone would want to buy a weapon skin, back pack, outfit or armor skin and show it off.

If the culling system decides you are ready to be presented to me in all your glory, non-grey, showing me your surf board greatsword, dead quaggan back pack, devil horns, whatever, then it should Show Me The Mini!. If it doesn’t want to show me the mini, then you should remain grey, or remove you entirely from my screen, if it needs the resources to show minis of people I can see.

My culling settings are on high. I tried them on very high, same thing.

I’ve tried the new leveling system, and though some things seem …odd, because I’m used to a different way… I think the new system is pretty good. I really like the new rewards (if I were a newbie..yay..dye!) and the tool-tips are way better than before. Leveling is a lot faster, like 30 minutes for 9 levels (for me).

People are often resistant to change, and this is a change, that’s for sure.

Overall, I give it a thumbs-up.

Lol. Anet will never roll back. They do not care what vet players think.

Why do you assume the vets are always right. Was this created for the Vets Only…Noobs Need Not Apply? No, it was made with everyone in mind. You created your toon already and you got it to level 80. You got your money worth out of the game with the thousand of hours you put into it. You are not opening your wallet anymore because vets should have a ton of gold ready to be converted to gems. China is monetary target now, it’s just business.

So tell me…why should they cater to you? Or maybe it’s just time to move on to other games or maybe RL.

How are you investing in it? By being a drain on their server? We vets don’t put any money into it any more. We farming the crap out of it and convert it to gems…that doesn’t translate to real life money.

I buy gems on a regular basis, yes with real money. Does that make me a drain on their server? The gem conversion rate is off the scale, has been for months.

I would love a rollback, but these changes are not going to go.

I keep my fingers crossed that they will be fixed and improved upon in the future, but considering this patch is supposed to be an improvement on previous features I worry more than they will ruin it all further.

Well, I already found 7 new players completely confused (they started just before the patch from what they told me) as to why the suddenly could not interact with a skill point.

A friend of mine who started playing a day or so prior is absolutely disgusted by the changes, she much preferred the old system.

And Vayne, I’m sorry, but I can possibly believe you’d be foolish enough to support this. It teaches new players nothing, it improves nothing for them, and it just makes everything so much more tedious.

That video was dripping with sarcasm yes, but he also made nothing up. He said it exactly as it was and you’d be a blind fool not to admit that.
