Server Dead ... Anyone there? Anet send help
I have the Same problem!
I can’t even get to the loading screen
I can log in but when I press my character nothing happens. Then the game crashes. What the hell is going on?
I have been having same issue for about 10 minutes now.
In before rollback!
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
I can’t resist…
“Game is dead. Literally unplayable”
Load up a Char that is on a different map, worked for me.
Moto wouldn’t have let this happen…
Load up a Char that is on a different map, worked for me.
That doesn’t work for me. I clicked all of my toons and it still crashes after a few seconds.
Right after I finished my final run of w2z3 trib. I had a few minutes to admire my admission to the red and blue cube club before poof!
At this point their priorities are obviously Gem Store>Expansion(most likely)>Living World(S3, Current Events, New Zones)>Raids>Guild Halls>Fractals>WvW>QOL Improvements. Even sacrificing from other areas in favor of LW. They completely restructured their plans for Legendary Weapons and sacrificing Festival improvements in favor of Living World.
They are coming out with Living World update at a MUCH higher content-to-release time ratio than they have ever been.
And we can’t access any of it right now because the game has died!
wooo finally got in
The wall is down
Lots of people seem to be having problems right now. Instances seem to be totally un-accessible to most.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
nvm…it’s not workinggggggggggggggggggggg
can’t log in to other characters
They are currently under a DDoS.

^Doesn’t it almost always say that?
And, where does one get DDoS from that, anyway? There is no other reason for an Authorization Server to be down?
Normally the ping is in the single digits on all servers.
Whenever they are dealing with a DDoS, the pings sit in the triple digits.

The instance creation server is down, meaning no new maps can be created.

Exactly, not like windows updates ever fragged a server either right!?

Well, that explains it.
Unable to get past character screen to enter Silverwastes on one toon but got to LA on another. What gives?
Hmm…so does this DDoS attack only affect instances? Or just certain players? Or what?
I’m afraid I’m not too familiar with what a DDoS attack affects.
(There seem to be quite a few players where I just loaded in. Still triple-digits on your site.)
I can get into HotM just fine, but not Sparkfly Fen. LA works too, but not the Aerodrome golem area.
Edit: LA is no longer loading for me. It’s like different zones sometimes work and sometimes don’t. HotM wasn’t working for me at first. Maybe it isn’t anymore again.

We’re looking into this, will update when I have info.

It affects whatever servers are being attacked. In some cases, players won’t know through outright non loading of instances. They may see a little lag.
I noticed in Sparkfly Fen that I was getting some really bad lag and when I went to do a personal story instance, it just sat at the loading screen.
Then I hopped over to check the server status and saw triple digits. This isn’t the first rodeo for the GW2 servers being DDoS attacked.

Im dealing with a similar issue. One of my charactes is in Auric Basin and if I select that character from the character selection menu the map will never load and I will receive a connection error. Note that the yellow loading ring continuously spins. Other Characters that are in Lions Arch or Metrica Province have no issue.
Ok, looked like your site said all servers (in NA) were being attacked (if that’s what triple-digits mean). /shrug
I didn’t have any issues loading into any map I tried, including an empty Guild Hall, with the exception of Dreamer’s Terrace. I guess either that site doesn’t include the pertinent information, or I don’t understand DDoS attacks (which is true…lol).
Regardless, the Team is on it. =)

Thank you, I am glad to see a staff post acknowledging the issue. According to map chat, and my own issues, SAB, PVP etc are all not accessible atm and haven’t been all evening. I played SAB fine this afternoon until 230 PM (Eastern time) when I left for work. Now I cannot access a world. Currently one of my toons is stuck in cyberspace floating between the SAB hub in Rata Sum and World 2 atm. I would like to get her back someday. :-) I have tried but the game keeps freezing like it has lost it’s connection to the host.
Thanks again for posting so quickly.
Edit: I logged into a different toon and tried to go to Lion’s Arch but it crashed the game as well.

If they can’t figure out what’s wrong then can they just roll it back?
I wondered if they had “fixed something” and if that broke something.
It’s 8 p.m. in Seattle so I don’t think many people from anet would be in the office.

That site is reporting the latency with the ping to the servers. The lower the number, the better. When the servers were DDoS attacked in the past, those numbers spiked in to the triple digits. So yes, I jumped straight to DDoS because the numbers were identical to past attacks. It may or may not be a DDoS, but I’m trained to remember history of patterns when it comes to networking.

Someone wrote something cute on another page elsewhere. “anet making wvw great again by breaking everything else.” It made me giggle.
I wondered if they had “fixed something” and if that broke something.
The latest windows version launched yesrterday/today so I wondered if it auto-updated and took out the server security protocols or something. These things always seem to happen when a major Windows update is launched and the supporting drivers etc don’t know what to do with it.
Either way, they are on it and seem to be pretty good with communications regarding such things.

More like “On Call.”
Their IT staff likely rotates weekly as to who is on call just in case stuff like this happens.
Just like every business that relies on their network staying up, every second the network is borked equals tons of money they are not making.

That is very, very, very seldom necessary. But don’t worry. The team is keenly aware of this situation, and top people are working on it!

Just 1 time ever did they have to. When in wvw something went wrong with armor binding. They did a roll back. It was 1 time in 4 years that I know of. But it’ll be okay. I have faith they can fix it.

Sorry, but this is required. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoy4_h7Pb3M

I sure hope so.

One of the IT guys at my work (a hospital lab) had an idea for a solution to a malfunctioning computer that I’ve wanted to try since he suggested it.
He said he was gonna tie the computer to the back of his pickup, drag it to the top of the tallest hill in the area, and kick it off said hill.
My response was, can I be behind you in my car, filming it? We’d get a million hits on YouTube!
Pass that suggestion along to your IT folks.
Looks like i am in the same boat T_T
Such sadness…
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
Looks like one of the Auth servers are unreachable.
I just got in, not sure if this is what did it but:
Run GW2.exe from a command line and use -authserv [52.58.184.22:80]
(ip i used, looks like one of gw2’s auth servers)
May work for some of the more tech inclined
Cheers !
We have identified the problem and things should be recovering.
For those of you who don’t know what a DDoS is:
It stands for Distributed Denial of Service. It’s also written as Distributed DoS or D-DoS.
A DoS (Denial of Service) is where an attacker floods a network device (server, firewall, network segment, etc.) with garbage packets. Individually, they take a trivial amount of time to just throw away. But, although trivial, it’s no zero time.
So, if you throw millions of these garbage packets at a network, that which used to be a trivial amount of time begins to add up.
A Distributed DoS is where the attacker(s) have multiple systems all sending the bad network traffic to one location. Attackers use “botnets”, which are collections of PCs, servers, etc. that the hackers have compromised. So, the attack isn’t just millions of packets, but billions and counting.
Hackers can even hire a botnet to do their dirty work. However, it’s not cheap ($10k per hour for the biggest ones), so there has to be a reason.
ANet won’t tell us what the attackers are after, but to spend that kind of money attacking a game, you can bet your bottom dollar that there’s a reason. They’re probably trying to figure something out about the network, or crack passwords, or any of a number of other things. ANet really shouldn’t tell us what they’re after; that info is better held close to the vest.
NOTE: I have seen no statement by ANet which would indicate a DDoS has occurred. And, they really should only tell us if they have a good reason, so I wouldn’t expect to see anything official about this, (if it’s a security issue, and Chris’s involvement would imply that there’s at least a possibility that it’s a security issue).
Chris and Gaile, it does look like it’s up again.

Yep, from all we’re seeing just now, things are good. The team will continue to monitor and we all should be able to game on!
