We are apparently about to lose our ability to mix and match town clothes. Let’s show ANet how much we will miss this by showing what creative ideas we’ve come up with and enjoyed for our “down-time” clothing.

It is possible that some of these WILL be able to be replicated under the new system. Most will probably be gone forever. Even if our pleas against this change fall upon deaf ears, then this thread may serve as a fond scrapbook memory of the good old days gone by.

Allow me to begin with poor Bubbles Powderpuff. She will likely be forced to quit her waitressing job at Two-Ters restaurant if she can no longer adhere to the dress code.

Shirt: Dragon Emblem T-Shirt (Becoming a tonic? Noooooo!)
Pants: Khaki Cargo Shorts
Boots: Starter Town Clothing

Ever the smart blonde, Bubbles Powderpuff is looking into new employment opportunities just in case. Here she tries out for the role of the new T-Mobile girl.

Head: Aviator Sunglasses
Outfit: Pirate Costume
Boots: Starter Town Clothes

There has been mention that “Hide Headgear” will be an option for the new “Outfits”, but no word that I’ve seen about “Hide Gloves”. Under the new system this look will then include gloves, and the big clod-hopper pirate boots (which will do nothing to help Bubbles get the part!). I’m not sure if the Aviators will be usable in conjunction.

Loyal Vigil soldier Clawfford takes a break for some chow while he’s off-duty.

Head: First Halloween Devil Horns
Shirt: None! (Will this be possible in the new system, or will some other piece I’m wearing force me into a full “outfit”?)
Arms: None!
Legs: Riding Pants (these make GREAT military fatigues on a Charr!)
Boots: Starter shoes… I normally wear Executioner Boots, but forgot to change into them before taking the screen cap. Doh!

Later, as the sun sets and the air takes on a bit of a chill, our hero slips into his regulation military …leather hoodie?

Young Hamfast Hornswoggle is rushing to join his friends at the baseball diamond after school for a real Daily Activity. The only non-standard item here is the GW2 Logo ball cap, so I might be able to keep this combo. Let’s just pray the cap doesn’t become one of those God-forsaken tonics!

Shirt: Cherry Blossom Shirt
Skirt: Cook’s Leggings
Shoes: Starter Boots

Alas, this is another combo that will not be able to be duplicated, since the Cook’s Costume has already been confirmed as becoming a whole “outfit”. The Sylvari have the most distinctive Cultural clothing, but so few choices along those lines.

I like the OP’s idea as well and Showcases what’s troubling about the conversion of These older items to endless Tonics.

With that said, here’s my Charr Necro’s attire when she’s not going round raising the dead: Leather Hoodie, Riding Pants and Boots. The only items I have bought gems for so far.

Can I still mix and match my town clothes?

Clothing pieces that are converted to armor skins can be mixed and matched with the same restrictions as other armors. Outfits cannot be mixed as each of them now is stored on an account-wide basis as a single unlock. Items related to endless tonics cannot be mixed or dyed.

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/45944258-Town-Clothes

Thank you, Exosferatu. We are all well aware of that. I am fine with the pieces that can be converted into skins. (Although I’ll really miss being able to set up a hotkey to instantly swap into my town clothes).

But much of what you see in these pictures will NOT be able to be duplicated under the new system, because many pieces come from Town Clothing “sets” that are now being converted into single-piece “outfits”. We will no longer be able to use individual pieces from those outfits, or do anything more with outfits other than to dye them and hide the helmet.

Then there are the items that will me made into tonics, an idea that utterly disgusts me. Tonics have a bad rep in this game to begin with, and I sure as heck don’t look forward to having to reapply them whenever I zone. Not to mention the fact that you can not use more than one at a time. I see NO reasoning behind making these items tonics instead of skins.

Now back to the pictures!

Here’s Hamfast’s mischievous little sister Miss Alyssa letting her witches’ riding broom get away from her. This is a very light mix ‘n’ match… the shoes are the Pirate Captain’s Boots, since I didn’t care for the looks of the original. In the new system, I believe I will be forced to display the gloves as well, which make my hands look skeletal. She’s a WITCH, not a SKELETON!

Valeri The Valkyrie is a true Norn, and revels in a fresh snowfall.

The only modification I felt the starter Town Clothes needed was the gloves from the Cook’s Costume. A perfect match that looked as if they belonged in the first place.

I initially bought the Cook’s Costume just for the armbands, but eventually found it had a nice skirt for my Sylvari, and a nice hat and boots for my Charr. So the Cook’s Costume was indeed a treasure trove of individual pieces for me that are now going the way of the dinosaurs when it becomes a one-piece “outfit”. (Sigh).

Side Note: Have you ever seen anyone in full cooks garb? Did anybody run around in anything except some of the individual pieces?

Lol, fun times and some cool looking toons. I’m not one to play dress up, but I still think it stinks Anet is taking something it’s players enjoy out. What was their reason and why turn stuff into tonics? Why can’t they just let all that stuff be skins for use?

There had been a faction of players asking to be able to use Town Clothes in combat for a long time. My guess is that they saw an opportunity to do this when the Wardrobe was being developed. For technical reasons (clipping and who knows what else), many of the existing Town Clothes were unable to coexist with Armors unless instituted in a new way.

So they came up with all-in-one “Outfits” to replace most of the Town Clothes. (Poof! A ton of individual Town Clothing pieces are instantly gone from the game).

Some individually sold items do work okay along with armor, so they will be turned into Skins. No loss there (mostly).

Then some remaining items that don’t fall under either category will become TONICS. Since they are Tonics, they will be undyeable, and will be removed from your character for various reasons such as entering a new zone. And you can only use one Tonic at a time. The way I understand it, if you have the Dragon Emblem T-Shirt, for example, it will become a Tonic. When you drink it you will be in your T-Shirt, plus they are adding pants, shoes, and whatnot for the rest of your body. So everyone with that Tonic will be exactly identical. Same clothing parts, same non-dyeable colors.

All in all, we are losing a ton of customizability in our Town Clothing. I can appreciate that ANet was answering the wishes of some of their players. But they may not have realized what a large portion of their customers use pieces from this Town Clothing, and parts of that Costume etc. to individually customize their non-combat experience. Now our characters will look like they all came from the same cookie cutter. Everything will be “combat clothing” now (mostly), so down-time looks are going to suffer big-time, and perhaps disappear.

People paid real money in many cases to develop their characters’ looks. I myself often bought a “set” just for one specific piece. They aren’t even offering Gem refunds for those sets. So in addition to taking away our creativity, they also hit many people in the wallet. Tension is understandable high.

We can only hope ANet hears our anguish, and agrees something must be done. If it is too late right now, that’s understandable. But I would love to hear them state that they WILL be looking into this. Promising to remake the old costumes (and the items that are slated to become tonics) as SKINS would be awesome. We would wait as patiently as possible while they replace our losses. Then if they want to continue down the one-piece “outfit” route thereafter, that’s fine by me. But I for one feel cheated right now.

I have to agree; while the wardrobe system as a whole has been overwhelmingly positive, now I suddenly hear this, and I’m just…. quite frankly, flabbergasted. I would have thought that town clothes would just be folded into the wardrobe system, separate from armor, just as the current system has them separate.

And you bring up a very important point about the sacrifice of freedom – I do NOT like having choices stripped away, at least not without a VERY good reason (such as it adversely affecting the game experience). Town clothes do nothing but enhance the game experience, and the customizability let people…. individualize their characters. This tonics/sets system removes that individuality, and I cannot in good conscience support a move like that.

For myself, it really boils down to the ruched shirt, khaki shorts, and the boots from either the chef, wintersday, and witch, costume. If those were made into combat skins, a lot of us would be happier. Because if you noticed, a lot of people have copied my look. /ohyesIdid

Adding again my little clumsy thief’s wardrobe shots. If I have time I will add more, since right now she’s around Vigils keep using a different combination of these pieces.

1. Default clothes, but in pretty pink shades. Because they’re pretty too.

2. The way she used to break in the destroyed Lion’s Arch taverns dancing and partying last summer. I’m really going to miss this combination ;_;
Shirt: Pink Casual Hoodie (bet she wont be able to wear it in this color anymore)
Pants: Khaki Cargo Shorts
Boots: Starter Town Clothing
Hat: Iron’s Tailpipe Bandana. I love how, dyed in the right color, it looks as if her own hair flows under it.

3. A classy lady…
Shirt: Cherry Blossom shirt (I’m going to miss this piece VERY MUCH)
Pants: Wintersday
Boots: Winersday

4. Not your everyday pirate… or her favourite fall ensemble
Shirt: Layered vest (some colors have awesome patterns in this)
Pants: Riding pants
Boots: Pirate Captain boots
Hat (Optional): Pirate Captain hat

5. Not your everyday pirate either
Shirt/Pants: Pirate Captain (I would love to be able to mix and match this… but it looks awesome even as an outfit)
Boots: Starter Town Clothing
Hat: Iron’s Tailpipe Bandana.

6. Dolyak Gifts hunter: The way she used to run after Dolyaks last Wintersday. Because retrieving lost gifts didn’t mean you couldn’t dress like a lady either:
Shirt: Wintersday
Pants: Riding pants
Boots: Starter Town Clothing
Hat: Wintersday

And here’s a video showing some more combinations:

Will come back later with newer ones XD

this seems to be again i wont look special , and showing pics as well to prove your point? some how i just find this even more sad than before LOL

Yes, many people want a unique look. Many people appreciate a non-armor look for when they are Roleplaying or just messing around in town. Many people get COMPLIMENTS on a neat, unique look. Anyone and everyone can have a Legendary weapon or a Commander’s icon. But not everybody has imagination. (And imagination is cheaper!)

It is possible that some of these WILL be able to be replicated under the new system. Most will probably be gone forever. Even if our pleas against this change fall upon deaf ears, then this thread may serve as a fond scrapbook memory of the good old days gone by.

Cute thread I love the creativity. I jsut want the point out what you said about the pleas falling on Deaf ears. Just because you do not LIKE the response does not mean they aren’t listening. They have explained in the other larger thread about why they made the choice to make some of the older pieces tonics. It is a system issue and this was the only way to change some of them over. It was an all or nothing type deal, and they chose to give us everything instead of scrapping the town clothes idea forever. I love how snarky you are in your “Instead of complaining lets just show off” But in almost every post YOU are complaining about the tonics. If you wanna show off your looks that’s fine and great and I think its wonderful, but your snarky comments about the fact that ANet is “Ignoring” you is just silly. They are NOT ignoring, they are standing by their decision.

Examples of them not Ignoring and explaining why they did what they did with some of hte Town Clothes: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Feedback-Questions-Town-clothes-Costumes-Combat/page/14#post3817507

That doesn’t sound at all like deaf ears. It sounds to be they are listening, they understand and even sympathize. But they obviously have metrics over how many people use vs. don’t use town clothes on a regular basis, and they had to change the system. So they made a decision. It may not be popular, but its theirs. Don’t go on about how they don’t listen when it’s obvious they do. Snarkiness like this is the reason Devs shy away from talking to players. Even when they do, and the explain people still say they don’t listen simply because they don’t agree with what you said. Psh. Grow up. It’s happening, sure its sad, but they didn’t ignore you at all, they answered, many times about why.
