A picture is worth a thousand words. Or maybe more. Thank you Donari for sharing the very informative screen shot, even including the tool-tip that says “Vendors and the Trading Post will ignore items in this slot”
It also shows that they’re treated like a (separate) bag, and don’t require sacrificing regular inventory slots. And that they have a clear border differentiating them from other slots, etc…
The screen shot tells it much better:

Most welcome. What I didn’t screenshot was the gem store description, which I can no longer access because having maxed my purchase it no longer appears on the store for me. I believe it specifically noted that the item slots won’t hold bags.

I will say the idea behind shared slots is very good. I think for 700 gems is a little high, but at the same time a person with 3 of these will only need 1 set of permanent harvesting tools for all characters.

However, upping it from 1 single item slot to 1 3-4 slot bag would make it even more worth the 700 gems. I say a minimum of 3 to promote the purchase of permanent harvesting tools.

Then don’t buy it.

Me, I don’t see the need for it. I do see the usefulness of it (keep a salvage o matic for everyone to share, or maybe a costume brawl item or some other gizmo-class item that you like using a lot, maybe an endless tonic)…. but I think it’s kind of silly.

So I’m not buying it, for that reason. You can choose not to for its cost (which I agree is kind of high; 500-600 would have been my estimation of its value). But I can definitely see others getting it.

It’s definitely a QoL convenience, plain and simple. Many are willing to pay for such things. Others do not. Still others pick and choose their perks, weighing cost and utility.

20 shared slots though? Definitely very much overboard. I really don’t see it topping 10 even in the long run. As for the price…. Anet may tweak it if it doesn’t sell, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’ll sell.

It’s a rip off plain and simple and a very very very poor decision.

Sorry, but you are trying to defend gouging of players, and that’s just as bad as this account slot rip off.

And doubly a rip off as they sold many account bound items because we didn’t have this shared bag facility in the past. Lots of peeps now have useless duplicate salvage and harvesting tools.

Correct.

We shall see what happens. I have 2 extra copper salvage matics and 3 extra gather tools… That’s 4,600 gems that I paid for convenience that could be recouped and spend 2800 instead for these slots. That gives me a surplus of 1,800 gems for bl keys or something.

No, I’m not cheap either. Had 8000 gems already, just bought $300 in gems and exchanged for gold because rates were good, bought 25 bl keys for 2100 gems and have 8000 gems left over… It’s the principal of the matter folks.

I bought the set of 5 and put my permanent bank access, copper fed, and 3 permanent harvesting tools in it. Now each of my chars has access to my bank no matter where they are, a copper fed salvage kit of their very own and (If I remember to switch out the tools) they have a set of permanent tools.

I thought it was well worth it for a convenience item and only wished to have another one for my Royal Terrace pass. I never thought we could get this much, certainly not a whole set of 20.

I don’t think you guys understand why these cost the price they do. If some one buys one of these slots they will NEVER buy multiples of the copper-fed or the infinite gathering. they have to make the money back for the lost sales from those items that’s why the price is what it its.

Buying multiples of those shouldn’t be a need anyways. Should just be an account unlock. Most rational people aren’t going to buy multiples anyways.

Put permanent bank access, permanent TP access, Permanent copper salvage kit, Permanent Mystic forge conduit, and Permanent Merchant access, and you’d never need to visit any city on any of your toons anymore.

To utilize it in a single slot, just bring Permanent Bank, and put the other 4 in inventory.

Back when the wardrobe went into effect and I had many extra townclothes as a result, I submitted a very polite and detailed ticket (granted, they had announced there would be a refund time window). I listed how many extra of each item I had. It was a lot of gems worth — and they refunded all of them. Because numbers don’t stick in my head I can’t remember any more how much it was other than definitely, literally, over 9000. Might have been over 19,000.

I’m debating asking for a refund on my second copper-fed now, I believe I got it on sale at one point. On the other hand I’ve gotten a lot of use out of it, well worth the purchase already, and the shared slots are so limited in number that maybe I don’t want to have to permanently dedicate one to the salvage-o-matic.

If they made it 300 or 350 per slot and allow 10 slots, it would sell like hotcakes, believe me.

They could make so much more money.

Tend to agree with this, I nearly choked when I saw it was 700 for a single slot.

It’s a really neat feature, as others have said one which many have asked for for a long time, but this price is simply taking the p.

I find this new offer so useful and quickly I bought 5 of them. But this new feature make certain items bought in the past useless now. My example is Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic. Now with a shared slot u can use same salvage machine with all ur characters… Then, what’s up with the players who we bought that item to more than one character? Now we have a few expensive useless items. I think this change ingame should come along with the possibility of get some item or game currency in exchange of that items bought with gems (non-consumable) now useless or waste.

Altho I agree it would probably sell and make more $ for anet if they lowered the price, I do not believe it is overpriced at all.

I think a lot of you are mistaking what you personally cannot afford as being the same thing as it is overpriced, but those two things are not interchangeable.

For example, I cannot afford a second vacation home. However that doesn’t mean whatever vacation homes are selling for is too much to ask, it simply means it is too much for me.

I really hate to say this, but this 700 gems for 1 singular shared slot is completely unacceptable. I’m sorry.

Considering how bombarded players are by inventory junk by your own design, all the weapons and armor and plethora of things we have to lug around… this IS a completely tasteless thing to do.

I suggest upping these to like 20 shared slots each or 1 shared bag slot for each one purchased.

You use the shared slots for a few choice items like copper fed salvage o matic, royal terrace pass/captain’s pass, bank/tp contract, etc.

You don’t need a lot, I think it’s a little pricey yes but I’m happy having bought a few slots for my salvage kit and royal terrace pass (now my alts won’t get kicked out and have to go fetch the pass from the bank to get back in)

It’s enough space because of what it’s being used for rather than just general inventory. Whether or not it’s worth the price charged is up to the consumer It’s just like the royal terrace pass itself, they’re selling a convenience.

The fact that you can’t even share a full set of ascended armor(not to mention weapons too) or a full set of ascended jewelry+backpiece is awful. That’s without mentioning that the price is too high. Marvel Heroes gives you like 20-30 slots of shared inventory for free and that game is f2p.

I am of the opinion that this price is way too high. Take that feedback how you will.

As much as it is unfortunate that some people have bought multiple items, there’s a good chance that there will be no refund.

#1: There wasn’t any sort of misrepresented transaction or wrongdoing here. Everyone who bought everything still has their items, and got exactly what they traded for. If someone has multiples of an item, then a shared slot wouldn’t be necessary.

#2: What would be the exact parameters for a refund? Would it be one item per shared slot? Would you be able to just toss any gem store item you want for an immediate refund? What items would be considered refundable? Because there was no wrongdoing, there isn’t any solid standard for what would need to be refunded, so what constitutes a just refund is up to whatever any individual players feels at that point in time.

#3: The shared slot isn’t exactly a needed purchase, nor were multiples of a lot of gemstore items. I have several items that could go into a shared slot, but all the shared slot does is save me a few seconds while I bank it and swap toons. After the initial purchase, either duplicate items or a shared slot are for convenience only.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

These slots have great value for a very limited set of items and for those few items I feel like the price is ok.

However, people would like such slots for many many more items (for example “key items” for HoT zones). The real bummer is that those “key items” in fact act as a currency. The principle of needing one item (currency) to obtain another item (merchandise) applies to all those “HoT Keys” 100% and all of them should have wallet slots.

If all these currency items would not clog up our inventorys and be available to all characters, the amount of rage against these shared slots would be much smaller.

I would love to have those shared slots, but unfortunately I do not own one of the very few rare items that make those slots super-valuable and worth the huge pricetag (like a permanent banking contract). As such, instead of spending all my gems and even buy new gems with real money, I will do nothing except writing a post on the forums.

I would have paid 1000 gems for one shared inventory bag. I will not spend 700 gems on one slot.

Sorry, but you are trying to defend gouging of players, and that’s just as bad as this account slot rip off.

Sorry, but you are trying to attack the price for a convenience item that many of us have been waiting for. 700 gems allows me to gain the use of an 800-gem copper-fed salvage-o-matic on all my characters.

I can also share a portal stone, giving access to Royal Terrace or Heirship etc.

It, of course, doesn’t resolve the issue for the huge numbers of keys and isn’t super-convenient for gathering tools. I expect those problems to be addressed using something like the wallet, which is free.

tl;dr don’t buy it if you think it’s a terrible deal. I’m probably going to get all five.

I loved how folk complained about the salvage-o-matic cost when it came out yet due to the convenience a lot people bought them and even bought duplicates. (that will be another issue to resolve, I think) It seems like the ones who felt it was not a good deal just did not buy them and the ones who did bought them. But more bought them than not I suspect.

I am not sure how this is a “rip off” though. It is a convenience item like the salvage-o-matic was. If it is worth the convenience then you might want to buy it. Buying the 5 is cheaper than buying just one overall (about 560 per slot).

You always hear the gouging argument when something new comes out. I once knitted a spectacular sweater out of really nice wool. The materials cost me over 60 dollars because it was high end wool and it was a very complex pattern that took me hours and hours to knit and then put together. I was asking a price that covered my labor and my materials. I had one lady tell me I should sell it to her for 20 dollars because what I was asking was gouging. Granted this is not the same thing as a virtual item the idea is the same. Some folk just don’t want to pay for what is offered and feel insulted at whatever price is set. ANet is the one setting the price for their product. They have the right to decide what price it is. We as the consumer can decide whether we buy it or not which will determine whether the product is a success or not. I suspect a lot more will buy it than not just like the salvage-o-matics. Ultimately if you have a need for what they are offering the cost is really not that big for your convenience.

No one is making you buy it. It’s a QoL item that doesn’t affect gameplay at all. Mobas get away with selling skins for avatars for 10-15$ a pop and half the time they just looka little different don’t even do anything extra at all. I don’t understand how this is any more a rip off than that. It doesn’t affect you in any way if you don’t have it as far as gameplay is concerned. It simply streamlines certain processes. I happily shelled out the RL money for 3 of them (likely to get more later). Heck just get a little gold and don’t buy it with real money?

However, when I browse through the options for creating a support ticket, I only see the option to get game/gem purchases refunded. However, what players like the OP or me are looking for is getting gems refunded.

There was a similar issue with the introduction of the wardrobe and back then some GM posted instructions on what exactly has to be selected when creating the support ticket. Unfortunately, I cannot find that old post anymore.

Any pointers on what options to best pick in order to get this right? Thank you

Really you can select anything on the ticket form and your ticket will get to the right person eventually. In this case, I would suggest “In-game Issue” and then “Trading Post/Gem Store problem.”

As for refunds: if you’ve had these account-bound items for ages, we won’t be doing refunds because you’ve already derived substantial benefit. If, however, you bought them more recently, we’re doing refunds on a case-by-case basis.

Problem with this logic is I can afford them, and I’m still not sure they’re worth the price.

Partially it’s a matter of considering how I’d use them and whether it’s better to just buy two of the item or split a stack (for things like teleport to friend). But it’s also weighing up the other things I could get with the same money and which I want more.

Buying 5 together costs £29.75. That’s actually slightly more than a copy of HoT on Amazon right now. Or I could get a whole other game (second hand or older releases admittedly, but still a whole game). Or 3+ books or CDs. Or…whatever it is normal people buy with their spare cash.

I’m not saying I won’t buy them. But I’ll most likely go for gold > gems instead of cash > gems, which is not good for Anet.

Having to equip and remember to unequip all those tools would be bothersome, plus the different effects make them still very viable but for the many who have more than one salvage-o-matic maybe we could trade them in for an extra slot instead of getting refunds? Or maybe two slots for the price of one and turning in a salvage-o-matic?
