  • Male norns are way too fat, their shoulders are much wider than their legs are long — as far as I’m concerned, they’re ogres, not norn! (Nothing against fat people, but this is a fantasy game hero… they shouldn’t be 900 lbs obese. A few extra pounds, sure, but obese beyond obese? )

Norns are anything but obese.

You can fool yourself all you want.

You should learn to make the difference between physically strong and a fat person.

You can be both strong and obese: sumo wrestlers. Doesn’t mean they’re not obese.

I won’t play a human because they LOOK nothing like the ones from the Original Guild Wars. Also their one handed weapons when sheathed look completely silly… Also clipping issues.

I won’t play a thief because you can’t have an off hand sword which is ridiculous to me because they have every right.

I won’t play charr because they run on all fours, yet the npcs don’t?

Will not play a norn Because of clipping issues.

Refuse to play an asura, they’re arrogant, short, and bossy.

Will play a Largos though, because they’re awesome.

Guild Wars 2 is not a sequel to the original Guild Wars but merely an alternative story setting.

Obviously we disagree.

Where I come from that’s unhealthily obese, even the skinniest male norn. Living there I’ve only seen one (female) person who looked that big where I come from, and that’s because she was hypothyroid since birth and went without medication to treat it, so her body made her obese. She exercised lots and controlled her diet very well (doctors orders), but because she didn’t have medication for the thyroid she was obese.

But besides her, even “fat” people where I come from only looked as “fat” as a skinny female norns. And that was extremely rare! I was one of those, even though I’m skinny by america’s standards, where I’m from I was considered very overweight because I was waaaaay fatter than other people ( http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Norn_female_physique.png number 1 here)
I was, what, one in a hundred? It was very rare to see another person as fat as I was. I don’t even remember anyone else. Maybe one boy in midlde school, this kid was considered obese (like number 4 here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/0/07/Human_male_physique.png )

The norn males LOOK strong, but they’re also obese compared to any person at a healthy weight. Even in america.

You can be strong and skinny, strong and fat, weak and skinny, weak and fat. Those are different things. I, and the people I come from, would consider all male norns extremely obese.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Norn_male_physique.png

If you are from a place where that weight is the average among people where you live and you consider that normal instead of obese, good for you I guess!

Let it go now. It’s clear we disagree.

People where I’m from are skinny (healthy weight), but also very strong. All women and young girls carried buckets of water for miles every day, went to the river with wet clothes and blankets to wash them, carried very large tubs full of blood (for sausage). We were strong, YES, but thin, not fat. Same was true for the boys and men. They were thin like the last guy here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/0/07/Human_male_physique.png but they were lean (very little body fat) but extremely strong.

Sylvari… Looked and sounded great in ideal before I started playing the game…

Then I heard the phrase “This rose has thorns – Here they are!”

I always imagined the sylvari flashing a pair of perky nipples when they say that. And then I added a little bit of my imagination where on top of those nipples, little rose buds bloom…

The bottom line is: I am having a hard time identifying with my characters because of the pre-loaded personalities via sound.

Although it felt very strange at first, I’ve come to appreciate the silence of my TSW characters.

As for races/classes I won’t play, well, I’ve tried them all, but so far my characters are all humans with the exception of one lone asura.

Charr just bug me, the way they move and the way they’re built, with their heads sticking out so far, and those long, thick necks. Seems like they’d topple over in a strong wind. Anyway, I’d planned on rolling a charr engineer as my 8th character, and I tried it but didn’t like it. Oh, and the tail. Since charr tail clipping was deemed acceptable and the devs felt no alterations/accommodations to the standard armors were necessary, then clipping is not a viable excuse against, well, anything. Let us play centaur characters already.

Sylvari – ugh. Played a male sylvari ranger to the 20s, deleted. Played a female sylvari engineer into the 30s, deleted. Don’t like how they look, don’t like what they say, and after playing through the most of the early part of the personal story with that engineer I am convinced sylvari are the very essence of evil.

Norn – played a female norn guardian (smallest size possible) into the 20s, deleted. I don’t know, she was okay, but at the time I wanted to try something different and although I’ve considered rolling another female norn, it hasn’t happened yet. The male norn all remind me of Bluto/Brutus from the old Popeye cartoons. Still, I tried one. Didn’t get out of the starting zone.

Anyway, looking ahead…

I’d play one of those blue guys. Largos. Maybe. Depends on what they look like behind those masks.
Not sure about the tengu, though. There’s something about the GW2 tengu that bugs me. They seem a little top heavy, or something.

Won’t play a Charr because of the way they run, that armor can at times not look right on their form, and even though I only briefly dabbled in playing GW1 I still “remember.” However, from what I understand the early stages of their personal storylines are well-written and compelling, which does intrigue me.

Don’t play a warrior because ‘everyone’ does. :P

Have never been into the “evil” or darker classes, so am not probably going to play a Necromancer. Plus their minions are sooo ugly, but they SHOULD BE. Actually, I remember hearing someone who played GW1 extensively, say how dark it was. Which is fine, wish GW2 had more darker themes.

I won’t play a Charr because they’re too big for the tight spaces the jumping puzzles put you in. It’s too hard to get the camera in the right place to see where you need to jump next. Their bodies take up too much of the screen. They’re cool though, they remind me of the Krogan from Mass Effect.

As for classes, there are two classes that I have been actively avoiding playing, and those are Warrior and Ranger. One for how common they are, and two because I can’t get in to their respective mechanics. Inevitably I’ll end up making a warrior due to my unnatural insistence on symmetry (so I’ll have 2 heavy, 2 medium, 2 light), but I’m holding that off until I get every other class I’ve made to 80.

For races, I’m avoiding the char largely because I don’t like their attitude on certain things. The whole race just feels embittered.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

Male Norn – Weird jumping animation. Some odd weapon animations(sceptre and 1h sword come to mind).
Female Norn – Their voice is awful.
Male Sylvari – Running animation bothers me.
Female Charr – Their voice doesn’t seem to fit a rough ’n tough race such as Charr.

So yeah, those are the four that I won’t be playing. I really do want to play a female norn and a male Sylvari but those little things just annoy me are THAT much of an issue to the point I refuse to play them.

Funset, This is all a difference of view points. Where as lorazcyk is placing all the races that are humanoid, into a “reality based humanistic physical standard”. You on the other hand, Funset. You place the humanoid races into a “fantasy lore standard”.

I do agree with Funset though.
The Norn are not fat for “Norn”.
To put humanistic standards (however shallow they may be) onto a race that is not your own is quite illogical to me.
I could say that for most of you I have seen posting in this thread.
Not to offend, but maybe here’s a suggestion.
Try playing the races “As the races”, not as a “human”.
Its quite fun, if you try.

But as far as things I cant play.
Male Mesmers, I don’t dig the butterflies.

Everything else, I like!

Makes me kinda feel as if the game was catered just to me sometimes when I get on the forums. And stumble upon topics and replies like majority of these.

I have a hard time playing anything Non Human or Norn. In other games I play strictly Humans/humanoids.

I can’t take tree fairy people and dog cat men things seriously. And I don’t trust Asurans for obvious reasons.

It seems petty, but I want to play a human in any game because I like being a human being. It has nothing to with a lack of imagination, but more to do with pride I think.

I also can’t play a Necromancer because Anet’s version of a Necromancer is the worst iteration I have seen. Look to DAoC, Rift, EQ1 and 2, ANYTHING for how to a design a necromancer. What is in this game is like a soft headed blood mage from Dragon Age.

I will never play a male Norn. They look hideous. I understand that they’re supposed to be big and badkitten, but they look grotesque to the point where it’s almost comical. Especially when they’re wielding oversized greatswords. And don’t even get me started on when they use the whirling attack on the GS. I know I sound harsh but every time I see a large heavy-armor wearing norn with a humungous greatsword run by me, it ruins my immersion a little. I can’t take them seriously.

Exactly this why i wouldn’t play norn male.

I also wouldn’t play charr because….. well, cat with swords… what? Looks ridiculous really.

Sylvari… i don’t know, it’s like i like and don’t like them at the same time.

I refuse to play Norn due to the poor proportions with the males and they seem to run in slow motion.

It’s for the slow motion reason that i will only play a Charr with a profession that gets some passive speed buff.

And although you can’t blame the Charr too much for Ascalon over 200 years ago(no more than you would blame a German today for what the kittens did), you can sorta blame them for the problems being faced with now.

The Charr invasion of Ascalon and the Human king’s reaction is now why the Charr are plagued with ghosts.

The Charr invasion of Orr and some Human’s reaction to that is now the reason Zhaitan has an army of undead.

I don’t play entire games because of the running animations. Take Rift- male humans (eth and mathosians are what they are called) look like they are power jogging in the most silly way imaginable. I only play human because I like the build of the body. Yeah it’s silly but that’s my reason.

As far as classes I’m not going to say any class is bad I just prefer certain classes over others.

For me, at the moment, Warrior, Guardian and Mesmer are the only professions I have the interest in to grind out to end game.

I prefer heavy armor and illusions over pets.

I stay away from Elementalist and Engineers because I’m to used to weapon swap.

Charr

Because… well everything. They have some pretty cool visuals with the steampunk aesthetic, but everything about them (including that) is ill-fitting when their lore is taken in to account.

Their lore?
Doesn’t their lore describe a battle hungry race turning away from all false gods towards the end of the last GW and instead to machines of war? What part of Charr lore is against them being what they are?

Yeah, what their lore doesn’t explain is why? Why did any of that happen?! And the biggest question, why didn’t they ever turn back? The Charr have had a SINGLE major victory in their entire history, and then, they go and abandon the power that won them that victory… for women’s rights, which admittedly wasn’t even remotely important for most of them? That’s seriously the only explanation for why they split from the flame legion, and it was obviously only placed there to explain how charr females could be PCs. Their is still no explanation for why they didn’t return to the flame legion, especially considering they have had no success fighting anybody else but the flame legion themselves since. Why have they never been tempted to turn back?

The Charr as an entire race are complete and utter failures, a laughing stock. Their entire cultures is based on self-importance and boastfulness yet they have never accomplished anything worth boasting about without the coddling of otherworldly powers. They beat on Ebonhawk for almost 200 years, a single city of inferior technology and numbers, and never even came close to breaching it!

Their culture makes no sense in light of the story under which it is supposed to have developed. Those things which have happened to them and the circumstances under which they have been put would not have inspired anybody to become what the Charr have become.

I don’t care what you think or what Funset thinks, the OP asked for our reasons, and I gave mine. It doesn’t matter if you OR him think norn males are fat or not, I DO, and that’s MY reason why I won’t play male norn.

The OP didn’t ask “Hey guys, give Radio Isotype’s and Funset’s opinions!”, he asked “give me your opinions”.

One person here said that female norn voice is awful so they won’t play norn. I disagree, I think it’s a beautiful, warm, and sexy voice. Did I fire mah lasorz at him and force him to change his mind? No, I moved on, because he’s allowed to have his opinion.
I also think it’s silly not to play charr because of the searing in ascalon, but I didn’t harp on that person or force them to change their mind.

In no other forum have I ever met so many nonsensical players. U HAF, U HAF, U HAF TO AGREE WIF ME!!! UR WRONG!!! IMMA PROVE U WRONG! … like a two year old having a tantrum.
NO ONE has to agree with you.

Back on topic:

I’ve been playing every profession, trying to find the profession with the least “useless” skill type. (skill types like Minion, Turret, Glamour, etc). I mostly play/replay open world content, generally solo. I like to have a huge variety of builds to play, I don’t like to always play the same one or two builds because I find it boring after a while.

My thinking was that I’d play every profession, see what it’s like, and I’d count how many skills “they actually have left” after I removed the “useless skills”.
LOL!

Well, I’ve tried every profession to 30 now, except ranger which I couldn’t stomach past 15 I think.
Still haven’t decided… I keep deleting them and trying again.

But that’s a “silly reason” if I ever saw one!

Speaking of: “I like to have a huge variety of builds to play (I get bored of using the same build over and over)”
That’s the reason I won’t play thief, I found I only really had one or two viable builds and that’s just boring to me after a while. The profession itself seemed lots of fun, though!
I’m worried necromancer’s going in the same direction…

I won’t play a male Norn since one time a black male Norn was dancing naked with bunny ears scares the crap out of me.
I was considering creating a slyvari male but currently can’t really find a model that won’t remind me of Trahearne. I hate him with a passion.
Currently wont touch rangers due to pets. They are more trouble than they worth.
