Charr

Because… well everything. They have some pretty cool visuals with the steampunk aesthetic, but everything about them (including that) is ill-fitting when their lore is taken in to account.

Their lore?
Doesn’t their lore describe a battle hungry race turning away from all false gods towards the end of the last GW and instead to machines of war? What part of Charr lore is against them being what they are?

Yeah, what their lore doesn’t explain is why? Why did any of that happen?! And the biggest question, why didn’t they ever turn back? The Charr have had a SINGLE major victory in their entire history, and then, they go and abandon the power that won them that victory… for women’s rights, which admittedly wasn’t even remotely important for most of them? That’s seriously the only explanation for why they split from the flame legion, and it was obviously only placed there to explain how charr females could be PCs. Their is still no explanation for why they didn’t return to the flame legion, especially considering they have had no success fighting anybody else but the flame legion themselves since. Why have they never been tempted to turn back?

The Charr as an entire race are complete and utter failures, a laughing stock. Their entire cultures is based on self-importance and boastfulness yet they have never accomplished anything worth boasting about without the coddling of otherworldly powers. They beat on Ebonhawk for almost 200 years, a single city of inferior technology and numbers, and never even came close to breaching it!

Their culture makes no sense in light of the story under which it is supposed to have developed. Those things which have happened to them and the circumstances under which they have been put would not have inspired anybody to become what the Charr have become.

+1, the Charr make no sense from a lore stand point for sure. But honestly the Sylvari story is even worse. “Hay guys were here now lols. Trees and stuff!” Great.

In modern times, the Charr generally follow the way of the Shaman caste. The caste led them in name of the fiery “gods”: the Titans. The Shamans, fully knowing that they were false gods, used them as a pretense to control the other Charr and fight the humans. Many bases of worship can be seen including burning effigies of titans littering Charr camps in Ascalon.
During A Flickering Flame and Dismember the Titans, Scorch Emberspire finds out the truth about the Titans not being gods. Scorch expected to be rewarded in his afterlife due to his service to the Titans but was pulled instead into the Realm of Torment. On inspection to ask his “gods” why this has happened the Titans begin to attack triggering the lies he was told about the “gods”.
In Guild Wars: Eye of the North Pyre Fierceshot and his warband have dedicated their lives to bringing down Hierophant Burntsoul and the Shaman caste. The Shaman’s grip over the Charr was weakening steadily so they reaffirmed their rule over the Charr with the Destroyers as their new gods. This relationship is seemingly destroyed on the mission Assault on the Stronghold where the destroyers are released on the players by the Charr but ironically turn on the Charr instead. Finishing the mission results in Pyre Fierceshot telling the Charr to remember this day and continue to spread the word that there are no gods for the Charr.

That’s why they don’t follow their “gods” anymore. That’s why they are very cynical, look down on races who do have gods.
I do agree I think it’s silly they never actually took Ebonhawke but it isn’t like the humans are pushovers either, especially with there being an Asura gate in the complex. On top of that many of their fancy war machines you see throughout the game I believe are rather new and were never used to assault Ebonhawke since the ceasefire. Especially the ones in the story.

I created a norn warrior and the running animation / sword swings really bother me. For me, they are unaesthetic. As opposed to a human or asura thief or ranger who literally flies across the battlefield with the coolest animations you’ve ever seen.

Yeah and that’s the exact point, the Charr are a romanesque society. They care about little more than efficiency, accomplishment, and the growth of their empire; and each Charr cares about nothing more than their own accomplishments within those areas. They don’t believe in any Gods or moral philosophies beyond sense and commonality.

Why then, if those are their motivations, have they shunned for 200 years the only thing that has ever allowed them to be able to accomplish anything as conquerors, seemingly for moral reasons? These heroes and their legends, given time, would fade. What wouldn’t, is the historical fact that before they lost that power, power with which they could fulfill ambitions which they are clearly incapable of fulfilling now. And given their current philosophy, Godly power or not, they wouldn’t hesitate to take it up, they have no reason not to with how their culture has developed.

Again, did you read all of it? They found out their god were false and they were simply being controlled by other charr. This struck their culture at the heart because they thought they had only done it with the help of the gods but they had actually done it all on their own. They were tricked by their own kind. They forever swore off gods. What else then, but their current science and technology. You have this view of them that they would do anything for a victory.. that’s plain wrong. They love battle yes, but they are also very prideful and no long nor ever shall follow a god again.

Yes I know. They had false Gods, they found out, and don’t want any more Gods at all, I get that and that makes sense. What doesn’t make any sense is their reaction to that and how it has developed their society. It makes sense that they would shun Gods, but in doing so they developed a society where commonality is the only moral imperative. That also makes sense, as they believe in no divine power to drive and dictate morality. But certain powers still exist, and now they know their true nature. And in such a society as they had developed, acting logically and in concert with their belief system, they would have turned back to those powers even denying the Godliness behind them.

But instead they act as if they’ll never warm themselves by a fire again because they were once burned, even if that same fire kept them fed, saved them from the cold, and destroyed their enemies, simply because someone falsely claimed to be the prophet of that fire. It’s almost like superstition, except in opposing mysticism rather than supporting it. And such a thought process among any mass populous (being avoidance of power and ingenuity because of associated, foreign, or unknown origins) would never lend itself to creating such a scientifically driven society.

Charr – i hate everything about this. Bulky, looks slow, fur… has a tail.. looks slow…
Sylvari – I don’t like veggies so…

I’m mostly Human and might try Norn. But Norn’s movement animation makes it look like slow.

Asura, well, nah.

Engineer – I don’t know how to play one.
Thief – Tried to, failed miserably.

The pre-programmed Living Story does bug me. I wasn’t sure why, but now it’s been pegged in this thread. No matter how I actually view my character, he acts one set way in every LS quest. I don’t even get multiple choices for dialogue. My character just goes off the script.

That really does bug me.

I don’t play a Charr because of them looking like they are hunched and got a bad back.
I also don’t play a Sylvari because of them looking like poorly textured plant people, with petals upon petals as hair and armor. Their armor, to me, looks all the same. T1 cultural: Leaves, T2: More leaves, T3: Even more leaves and maybe some fancy leaves to top it off!

I won’t play human females because they’re far too over-sexualised.
The general appearance is bad enough, with the majority of faces being disturbingly young with sexual pouts, but the idle animations finish them off for me.
When doing nothing, human females in GW2 look like street-walkers.

Yeah I wont play human males because since they’re so handsome, they’re obviously being objectified by those matriarchal oppressors. The fact that they look and act like Gigolos is just so degrading to us men!

I wont play Charr because it’s obvious that they’re pandering to the furry crowd and those Asura are obviously supposed to make children look attractive

Let’s not even get started on those Norn, now people with growth conditions are being made to look sexual and that’s just wrong! It’s like promoting anorexia but with the giant gene!

Let’s talk about Sylvari too, it’s obvious that people are trying to promote their weird form of plant fetish by giving them feminine women and handsome males. Seriously, everything in this game is just WAY over sexualised.

In short: no, you’re wrong.

I typically do not play anything human. The more non-human, the more likely I’ll play it
<snip> I look at a male human in the mirror everyday.

I will NOT play human….

<snip>

Agreed – you already are one and you see them every day in RL.
I never play human in any rpg that has non-human races.

Besides, human/norn are so incredibly cliche in this setting: “When I grow up, I want to be a hero!”… vomit :p

- I will not play a male charr, because they’re cats with horns (I do love them as npcs though).
- Despite loving them as npcs, I will not play a sylvari because they look too human.
- I will not play a ranger because of the pet and cheesiness.
- I will not play a necro because all the abilities are pretty nasty by description.

  • Male norns are way too fat, their shoulders are much wider than their legs are long — as far as I’m concerned, they’re ogres, not norn! (Nothing against fat people, but this is a fantasy game hero… they shouldn’t be 900 lbs obese. A few extra pounds, sure, but obese beyond obese? )

Norns are anything but obese.

You can fool yourself all you want.

You should learn to make the difference between physically strong and a fat person.

You can be both strong and obese: sumo wrestlers. Doesn’t mean they’re not obese.

Are you sayng that norns look like sumo wrestlers?
Norns are muscular, not fat, not obese.

For what it’s worth Funset I know exactly what you mean. In my subsection of RL society we call these guys bears and generally they are muscular with some of what we call beer fat on them, and they have the thickness thing going without trying and most of it is muscle. That’s how Norn are imo. Obese is like those people who need a crane or surgery to be removed from their home when they have a stroke, there’s a very clear difference. Now, having body fat on a thick frame doesn’t mean someone’s unhealthy either that’s why they decided to forego the old system of simple weight measurements and use the Body Index values instead because frames are important and muscle weighs more then fat does.

I wont play these races

Charr male/female – I dont want my character to look like a rabid dog
Silvari male/female – I dont want my character to look like salad mutant
Human female – they look like a little girls/barbies
Human male – they look like gays
Norn male – mutant on steroids, dont like
Asura male/female – they just look like little creeps

So all my characters are Norn females – beatifull, mature, giant-ladies
