Q:
I heard that from this Tuesday, our skill points will be converted into a new currency called: spirit shards.
Here’s my question:
1. Can we use spirit shards to unlock skills like we currently do with skill points?
2. If not, how can we unlock skills from now on?
3. Should I try to unlock all skills before the changes in case we can no longer unlock skills through skill points?

A quick update on this one -> After feedback from presenting the original hero point count – we decided getting to level 80 will give you enough hero points to unlock all the core skills and traits entirely. Doing hero challenges (aka skill challenges) will simply allow you to earn all the skills/traits earlier before level 80. With the release of HoT, there will be options to spend the excess hero points earned from doing hero challenges in the world.
There are a number of other changes on 6/23 to make the experience from 1-80 more exciting, better-paced, rewarding, and fun as well after having the time to evaluate and player feedback from the updates last year.

1. No.
2. You get hero points and the entire skill unlock system gets revamped.
3. No.
I heard that from this Tuesday, out skill points will be converted into a new currency called: spirit shards
Skill points not gained from leveling up (before level 80) or skill challenges will be converted to spirit shards. The skill points gained from leveling up (before level 80) and skill challenges will be converted to hero points.
1. Can we use spirit shards to unlock skills like we currently do with skill points?
No. You use hero points to unlock skills (and traits).
2. If not, how can we unlock skills from now on?
See above.

1. No. Spirit Shards will be used instead of skillpoints to buy things from Miyani. They are purely a crafting currency.
2. For Hero Points you will get from leveling and doing hero challenges (current skill challenges on maps. Thus, their number is finite (400 hero points from leveling, ~190 hero point from map completion, and perhaps another ~30 hero points from skill challenges that are not counted for world completion – those in Dry Top, SW, Southsun, WvW, home instance)
3. No. There will be a skill(and trait) unlock reset anyway, and you have to rebuy them for hero points (you will get HP for your current level and skill challenges already done). Any skillpoints you will use up for skill unlocks now will not be refunded/converted to spirit shards.

Thanks for the detail info.
But does that mean my 8 alts who doesn’t finish map completion will now need to redo the whole map completion and skill challenge kittens before I have access to all skills? I already finished that with 2 characters, I seriously don’t want to do that 8 more times…
That’s extremely disappointed tbh. Also are you sure all skills that we unlocked will be locked again? I literally have 2k scroll of knowledge to burn, I seriously rather blow all of them right now on all my alts than wasting time redoing map completion 8 more times…

It was said that in order to unlock all non-HoT skills and traits, level 80 characters will need to do about 65 hero challenges. However, more than likely, you do not use all skills and traits so you can unlock everything you actually use without doing any hero challenge (i.e. by only using the hero points you get from leveling up).
No, you don’t have to redo any map completion already done. You’ll get 400 hero points for being level 80, which by itself will be enough to unlock all skills and a couple of builds (or the skills you normally use and more traits). Then you’ll get more hero points for the skill points already done, up to a max number. The number done above that max number will become spirit shards.
Hero Challenges (Skill Challenges) do not require Map completion. You can, for instance, enter the starting zone and only do the 6 -10 Hero Challenges there, without completing any other part of the map.
I’m not sure why so many people equate Hero (Skill) Challenges with (total) Map completion.
Now, you may not be thrilled with having to do any Hero Challenges, but it certainly is not required to do Map Completion like your two characters have done.
Good luck.

Yes, that’s exactly what this means. Only levels pre 80 and skill challenges will progress you towards getting the maximum amount of skills.

Any skill point scrolls used to get skill points with which you unlock skills prepatch will be wasted.
Skills will lock under the new system and will have to be unlocked anew. Skill point scrolls will provide spirit shards and will no longer be related to the skill unlocking system.
Any skill point scrolls used to get skill points with which you unlock skills prepatch will be wasted.
I sincerely hope that’s not the case, i have used over 100 scrolls unlocking the rest of my skills on my 10 characters.
At worst I expect a refund of used scrolls and at best the skills to be grandfathered into the new system.

The question is only IF anet has gone through the trouble of reimbursing accounts for skill points used from skill point scrolls. I have my doubts since it would require a lot of extra effort on their part. That the skills get locked is a given from the information on how the new system works.
My guess is their reasoning will be:“you were able to use the skills so far with near no effort on the players part to complete skill challenges etc. Now we have to remove them.”
The upside is that the new system seems way better prepared for the future and can more easily be expanded on.
At worst I expect a refund of used scrolls and at best the skills to be grandfathered into the new system.
You can be assured that NO skill will stay unlocked. Try watching some of the livestreams, anet has been very clear on how the new skill and trait system works. About a refund, see top.

Correct me if i’m wrong please, the scrolls of knowledges we got will become spirit shards and we got to have “atleast” 65 skill point challenges completed in the world to reach the maximum hero points available?
Thanks in advance

Yes.

To get access to all of your classes core skills, yes. That’s the number thrown out by anet so far, but you can have more hero points than that. Hero points cap will be at:
- maximum for being level 80 (about 400)
- maximum for doing all skill challenges (about 220)
Does this effect the instant level 20 scrolls? also any one know if anything happening to tomes of knowledge as you can use these at level 80 to gain a skillpoint.

Since hero points are connected to levels without any distinction on how you got those levels, your character leveled to 20 via a lvl 20 scroll will have the same amount of points as your character that leveled to 20 “traditionally”.
Tomes of knowledge will give spirit shards on level 80 characters after this update.
But does that mean my 8 alts who doesn’t finish map completion will now need to redo the whole map completion and skill challenge kittens before I have access to all skills?
Most likely yes (though so far Anet has declined to clarify that issue). From what we know, the hero points from level alone will be enough for normal play, and 65 additional hero point challenges will be required to unlock all core traits and skills. We don’t know how much elite specialization traitline and skills will cost yet, but will possibly require additional 100-120 points (which would bring the total to close to what is currently available).
It is also not clear what will happen to racial skills – whether we will need to pay for them extra, or will they be unlocked automatically, or even whether they will exist at all. We do know, that Antitoxin Spray will get removed completely.
Thanks for the reply Rasimir.
So after the update i can still you my lvl 20 scrolls and tomes to level up a character instantly?

Yes.
Just out of curiosity, how have you only just now heard about all this? Everyone has been going bananas over these changes for ages now. Have you been away? :-P

In order, no, with the new system, no, because the new system locks everything until you unlock them.
Won’t do you any good, the whole system is getting revamped
So all the skills are getting unlearned anyway.
You’ll get points for leveling, and the points gained from skill challenges, all other skill points are converted to spirit shards.
So what you want to do before tomorrow is make sure you’ve finished as many skill challenges as possible.
The total hero points is 465 I believe, 400 from leveling and 65 from skill challenges.
But since it’s 400 from 80 levels (5 per level it seems) it’s hard to tell whether you need to finish 65 skill challenges or if you get a similar 5 hero points per skill challenge (only 13 challenges)
I figure if I look at map completion and see at least 65 skill challenges done done I’m good.

Close, the total hero points are more than 465. 465 is what according to anet is required to learn all the core skills.
As is the total amount of hero points seems to be around 620 from leveling and all skill challenges. Hero points will get used on other things in HoT aswell.

You guys are tearing it up. This and the ascended change are awesome.
Cool beans! Thanks, Colin! It’s great to hear about all the awesome changes coming! =)

Why thank you kind sir.
Looking forward to seeing these changes coming as well.

Good, I didn’t think it made sense to have people do challenges they already did in the the past. Great call..
The great news just don’t stop
Thanks thumbsup

Wow, that’s actually really amazing. WvW players will be quite pleased with this news!

That was never the thing though.
You would still have gotten Hero points based on challenges you had already done. But before this change you would need to do (or have done) a minimum of 65 skills challenges in order to unlock everything.
The only thing this changes is that you will have enough points by simply leveling to lvl 80. The skill challenges completed will still give you hero points retroactively though.

Wow, good job! :o
If that means we don’t have to spend gold on them anymore, thank kitten.
Current trait system is imo by far the worst thing that has happened to this game
Awesome! I was grinding to get points, thanks Colin!
Nice one, thank you CJ
Man, I hope you get to talk like CJ…that would be cool

Good news, thank you!

+1 for reminding me what a great character CJ was.

I support not having to move my level 80s from their JP perches, just to make sure they have all their skills.

This is great news. I’m sure a lot of my guildies that play only wvw will be happy that they won’t have to go do hero challenges to regain lost skills, or do pve on new chars.
Thanks for the good news, and for being open to our feedback on that change.

That is awesome to hear! I was worried I would lose 20% of skills on most of my characters that didn’t do any world completion, but that comment is reassuring now, – looking forward to it!
Stoked on this. Not stoked that this wasn’t the no-brainer decision during meetings about it to begin with. There are some fundamental things with progression that have changed over the course of the years and hopefully this marks new approaches being considered going forward.
I would hope going forward you guys and gals that make the decisions keep this filed away for future discussions. Past progression should never be considered a thing that can be altered.
I like new info. What I dislike is that they haven’t given us a comprehensive and detailed information on Hero Points quantity and distribution. Like, we’ll get 400 by reaching level 80, but how paced will these points be? Will they be given by Level-up rewards? This is what I’d like to see in advance…
+1 for Colin
That at least should resolve the largest grump people presently have with the system.
I think it sort of devalues the hero/skill challenges, but I can understand the “why” behind that decision.

How many Hero Points will you need to unlock the Elite Spec in HoT?
Also I am running a community event to get 65 skill/hero points this Wednesday! Sounds like at the very least we will get something to spend excess points on; so come join the fun!
If we do a lot of skill challenges and stuff, what happens after we unlock everything before we hit level 80? Do we just keep getting spirit shards?

You don’t magically start getting spirit shards for leveling or the hero point challenges. You’ll still get points. Even if you have everything unlocked you’ll get the points and will be able to spend them later when more things are added.
