Guild Wars 2: It's alive!
Google “Sales Numbers Mists of Pandaria” for a round up of analysis. But, in short, box sales of the expansion fell well below expectations (down 60% from Cataclysm). At this point, they seem to unsure it that is due to poor sales overall, or a shift to digital sales, or both. In fairness, I can’t remember the last game I bought in a store.

Since you can’t remember the last game you bought in a store, you are certainly not among the “shift” to digital sales between Cata and MOP.
So who here uses xfire?
I don’t know anyone who does.
diablo 3 killed wow
Well, for me at least, Diablo 3 killed Blizzards reputation,
Jay Wilsons “kitten that loser” comment in response to an interview with one of Diablo’s founding fathers was an eye opener, lol
Blizzard just seem to be in self destruct mode at the moment, which is good, it’s good for gaming as a whole, it means more players will start playing other games, which means income and support for some of the smaller companys.
Bury my heart at Wounded Knee.

I guess people who use xfire are more likely to be those who spend a lot of their time in gaming. It is natural for those who have played for over 200 hours during the first month to get bored and decided to take a break.
But they are far from representative for most of the player base. A casual player who spend 2hrs a day in gaming will need at least three months to reach 200 hours play time. And casual player is always by far the dominant force on gaming market.

But do these people even use xfire? Seriously, have you ever seen a guild or clan in ANY game saying, “Hey we’re looking for members, must have xfire!” or people in GW2 in the mists saying, “need 1 for tournament, must use xfire”? I never have, I never hear anyone ever talking about using xfire for anything in games at all. Hell, I barely even remembered that xfire existed until this thread came and started claiming that xfire was the best metric for determining if a game was failing or not.
People are claiming that the “hardcore” people use xfire, well, I’ve gotten to nearly 200 hours in GW2 so far, and have probably thousands of hours in just the last year playing everything fro MMOs to RTS and FPS and no one I know uses xfire nor does any guild, clan, or group I know of even talk about using it.
I’m LvL 80 now for a week or 2 have all my gear I want, don’t pvp and don’t care to have a legendary because of all the grinding. I knew this game wouldnt have much 80 content but I at least thought the Explorable dungeons would be a good time I found them easy and boring( i know some find them fun and hard). I’m glad people still enjoy the game I did for sometime but will be moving on until newer contect comes up. Hope this game runs for many years, but hope the pve content becomes a bit more challenging.
I have a level 80 Ranger that I still have fun playing. I really enjoy doing WvW with my guildies even though I absolutely hate PvP. So how strange is that? Here is a game that has made pvp fun for someone who doesn’t like pvp.
GW2 will be just fine. They’ve already made more sales than projected, people are still playing and I still get pushed into overflow.
Why don’t these people that seem to be “leaving” (I have wrote it this way because they haven’t left at all….at least on the forums, after all they have no problems flooding this thread with hate despite no longer playing) because they can’t find enough people to do dungeons or areas join up? there seems to be enough of you to from 2 or 3 groups, or better yet find a big guild, I haven’t had any problems finding people to do dungeons because there’s always a ton of people on in my guild.
Level 80…
I wanted a helm that was available from a Karma vendor in a level 15 area.. plenty of folks running around
Stopped for a bit (passing through) in a level 45 area, big boss spawned.. no players.. call in map chat, linked the wp, players!
I didnt get chance to go to Orr today, but Im guessing.. players!
Last time I leveled a character in WoW I was lucky if I saw a single person from 1-85. I may have seen two.
I don’t think there is a person here who would argue that the game’s basic design philosophies are somehow broken – after all everyone bought the game with the promise of those principles. The game has an extremely solid foundation. If everyone stopped heralding doom and gloom and committed themselves to seeing the game become as good as it is CLEAR that it CAN BE no one would feel the need to justify themselves with threads like these. It might not do it as quickly as we want, but I’m confident it’s gonna get there. I genuinely believe that Arenanet is here to help, not to hurt. I’m excited to see what the future holds for the game and one of the best parts is the fact that I can be along for the ride without the absurd commitment of a monthly sub. I’m playing Torchlight 2 in tandem to GW2. That’s awesome. With a raid schedule back when I played WoW? ESPECIALLY at the beginning of an expac? Good kittenin’ luck.
Hardly any AAA MMOs die. Predicting the death of a game, especially of this magnitude, is ignorant at best.
http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/the-daily-grind-when-do-you-consider-a-game-to-be-dying/
The real question is not if this game will die. It’s whether or not this game will GROW, and for how long.
If ANet puts forth the same effort with GW2 as they did with GW1, then this game will be fine and continue to grow, even after dips in population.
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”
i dont think the combats are good enough for this game to grow.
eventually, people will reach cap, and eventually.. pvp, wvwvw , dungeon is your endgame.
and combat, especially in dungeon or world event, are “meh” (each for different reason).
GW2 allows me to have all of the fun multiplayer action of a traditional AAA MMORPG without the seemingly ubiquitous subscription fee.
For me, the ability to play however I like and whenever I like while still making meaningful progression on my character places GW2 above other MMOs.
The same casual qualities that make GW2 appealing to me, however, may be off-putting for people who want to invest more time or play with more regularity. This is perfectly fine! There are a plethora of options out there to suit everyone’s distinct taste, GW2 simply exploits the niche that I find most appealing.
I just had a bad case of deja vu. This really reminds me of how how it was in the Swtor forums.
Player A: “This game is dying!! Fix the problems!!!”
Fanboy A: “Game is fine, game is not dying!!!”
Player B: “This game is dying!! Fix the problems!!!”
Fanboy B: “Game is fine, game is not dying!!!”
etc
etc
etc
Now, is the game really dying? I sure have seen a decline of low-mid level players in my server (Dark Haven). But that can be attributed to many reasons.
Mainly, Anets extremely shoddy follow up decisions after the game launched. Besides the DR issue everyone seems to be riled on about (me included). Just the amount of bugs, broken classes, low content in higher level areas, extremely broken economy, army of bots that keep multiplying, problems with design in WvW, etc.
BUT, i think the most important thing of all, in my opinion with my ton of hours put into the game with real life friends and solo, this game really plays like a single player game! That was a big problem in Swtor, and now this is even a bigger problem in GW2. There really is no real social aspects for players to get attached. No real team mates, no real communities, no real friends. You will NEVER hear players meeting their soul mates in GW2. Its a bit weird for me, but it sure is an awesome story. Two players of opposite sex, got so into the game, joined a real close community around the game, enjoyed playing together so much with them and with their community, that it compelled them to get married in real life.
My point is, it is in the social aspects that makes players stick to the game…and in turn, make the game thrive. It is not the content, the content is merely a tool for which to make social ties with other players. So, in order for social ties to be made, the game tools and content MUST be tailored in order to have that experience.
GW2 has NON of this. It really is a shame because i like this game and see so much unfulfilled potential in it. I play this game with my fiancee and real life friends. We have created our own private guild just for us. I have also joined a bigger guild….but there really is not much activity in it…even though it has a bit over 100 players. The ONLY way i am able to enjoy this game, in a social aspect, is when both my fiancee and I log in at the same time (she is literally playing next to me in real life), and we start questing together. Meaning, we do the same hearts, DE’s, etc at the same time. If i ever do a zone or heart before she does, it really is extremely boring for me to repeat said heart with her. Not because i dont enjoy my time with her, but because the content (heart quests) are extremely boring once you have already done it once (plus you also get no reward). I sure wish DE’s were more common and plentiful, so i dont have to go DE hunting…which is also pretty boring activity to do.
I can rarely even play with my other real life friend. If he is in a more advanced area than me and higher level….or vice versa….while you CAN play together (the game doesnt literally stop you from doing so) it is BORING for the higher level to go to lower level area, and help a friend….or hell, just quest together. Again, it is the design of the game at fault. Why? because Anet has made grouping to be a trivial thing.
This is why, the whole notion of “the whole game is end game” is nothing but a marketing term and does NOT translate to what is really happening in the game. The notion itself is flawed. Because the moment you put “levels” in the game, the whole notion of “the whole game is end game” flies out the window. Why? Mainly because it creates a rift between low and high level players. The higher level player can drag himself to a lowbie area, be bored, and help his comrade. But the low level player cannot go to a high level area and play with his high level comrade. So how can you fix such a problem? The solution has already been created! Its called “end game content”. Why is that important? Because it creates a meeting point for players. Your high level friend cannot go any further. He can help you level in the hopes that you, the lowbie, can reach level cap to go tackle what is beyond…together…with your comrades. Creating a sense of camaraderie, then maybe joining a community, playing with them, tackling more content. having more experiences…..for years to come.
Also, excuse me if i seemed rushed, or didnt write down my thoughts in more depth, the post is already too long. I do not want to make it longer.

This happens all the time on MMO launches. It’s a sure thing like the sun rising or setting. For whatever reason. you can bet all your money on it that it will happen and only stupid people would take the bet.

Doesn’t matter, when xfire says a game has collapsed to 1/3 of its original playerbase in 1 month this is an accurate number. Even if only 1% uses xfire that’s still enough people to be statistically valid, and declining popularity of xfire itself does not manifest itself on such a short timescale.
the presumption of everyone either playing a blizzard game or GW2 is hilarious.
truth is rift is the biggest threat to this game, (poor cs and constant blocking issues aside), when storm legion hits its will decimate game communities everywhere
