Southsun is a nice place, graphically, and by far the most dead level 80 zone. Till recently, some folks still visited it for the one Rich Ori node in all of the Pve.

Now that the rich node is gone, what reason is there for Southsun to even exist?

Probably gets lost in the shuffle as some other new upcoming zone they’re working on exhibits greater potential.

It’s not like Southsun had much potential anyway. It’s a stale rock, with its most noteworthy story arc being the continued development of some NPC faction vacation resort…sounds like a dud to me.

Doubtful. The rich node was removed because if it wasn’t, you’d be getting 3x rich ori nodes very easily. Now you can get 3x regular ori nodes, which is pretty much equal to the one rich node.

Southsun Cove always felt like a huge missed opportunity.

After months of farming Plinx in Orr I thought ANet might give us a real alternative to farming Orr. Instead though they nerfed Plinx (which is fine) and instead gave us a zone with:

-Very dangerous mobs, especially for glass-cannons
-A zone with low event density
-A zone with very few “mass spawn” events

The only good thing about the Southsun cove is the relatively high density of Mithril and other crafting mats. But that’s hardly worth the visit considering how abundant they are elsewhere.

If it weren’t for the Rich Orchi Node and the Karma tools the Cove would barely have any visitors at all.

I don’t see any reason to go to Southsun Cove. The veterans are barely soloable, the normal trash is hard and there’s no vistas or skill points. The zone reminds me of Silithus in World of Warcraft in that it’s a high-level zone with cool rewards to get (orichalcum, karka scales, etc.) but the amount of work required is totally not worth it. I’d like some “Living story” to happen in the zone and transform it for the future. At least some vistas, heart points and skill points would be nice to put it on equal footing with the other zones.

do not understand the need to limit the amount of ori node to so few around Tyria. Honestly, they should increase the amount by a tenth fold, scatter them around Tyria and instead make more lvl 80 craftables/ skins so ppl can have some more incentive to visit lower level zones and at the same time have more stuff to do.

With the latest update, they seem to have kind of removed any incentive to do the Fractals too. Difficulty on the “easier” fractals and bosses has been increased.

So the whole November update was kind of worthless.

Granted, the main reason they introduced the Fractals was to have an endless grind for people wanting a “challenge.”

But now the rewards/profit vs time/risk from the Fractals seems less than normal dungeons. (Which they’re now trying to get people to do, by fixing them…)

In the future I could see some interesting developments. For example, we know the Consortium has some questionable operations running in the area so I can see a future update involving implementation of new dynamic events, a storyline and a dungeon.

Plenty of opportunities to expand upon the concept.

Southsun needs to die. I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Kidding aside though, the place is beautiful, the creatures are interesting and the idea is great. Just too bad its so poorly designed. There’s so few events going on, and the enemies are a bit tougher, especially the big karka, but they drop nothing. There is even a slayer achievement for the karka, which doesn’t make any sense.

A few things I think will definite spruce this place up are:

  • Huge meta events: Basically scrape all these lame small events. The island feels larger than life, but suffers from inactivity. Not only on the players’ side, but across the board. Design large scale events that escalate across the entire islands.
The Consortium should definitely play a role here. Look we all already know they suck, they’re the reason the karka lashed out, and most of us dislike them. Play them off as the ignorant kittens that they are, and use that in the events. Let us challenge they’re ideals as much as we’re battling to save they’re idiotic hides from the karka.
For instance, there can be a large event chain where they become interested in an artifact and take large scale initiative to get it, however, this item seems to rile up the karka. So the event chains require us to stop them, while also making sure the karka remain in check.
  • Underwater: This was what a lot of people initially expected from the Lost Shore event. However, when there wasn’t any underwater sections, I heard a lot of people sigh with relief. The first problem is to update underwater combat first. A lost of people aren’t keen on it.
Then the potential for underwater Suncove events can be implemented. Now the large scale chain events can go over and under the island, even take a person from one side to the other. That would be great, as this place is perfect from some much needed underwater epicness.
  • Karka abilities: I was somewhat disappointed that all the karka possessed a crowd control ability and that was about it. I think they have far more potential, less CC more crazy. Like the crabs grabbing hold of you, or them rolling over players. That’s great, I love that, they should have more of that. For instance, the small ones spray you with a crippling effect. Why not rather have they’re spray apply a debuff called karka saliva. As it stacks you’ll receive odd effects, like dodging causes damage, and dealing damage causes bleeding, and higher stacks cause confusion, and then cripples you.
  • Rewards: As of now the drops are terrible. But I’m sure this is a bug, as none of the vets drop anything, which isn’t right. Still I’m thinking the island can maybe have it’s own reward system. The game has so many tokens and another resource would be too much just for Suncove, so perhaps it can be a UI thing. When you arrive there, you’ll get a karka (or Southsun) kill meter, and the more you kill the higher you’ll score. Eventually you can give in your totals to chose a reward, like coins or karma or mats.

I know I’ll get flamed for this (and told to learn how to play), but I agree with this. The foes there are way too hard and you’re really forced to go with a party. Even in Orr (old style), you could move around solo (even though it was slow going due to the enormous amount of Risen…) without too much trouble. In Southsun, it takes way too long to even kill a standard Karka, let alone a veteran one…

I loved the event that spawned Southsun Cove, I’ll admit. Despite the mishaps I had a blast. But I have to agree now, the area is too difficult to farm for too little reward. It’d be nice if ANet revisits the area sometime in the future to make it worth our while.

At the moment it’s a nice place to mine mithril, wood and orichalcum not to mention the 2 jumping puzzles.

At the moment, Orr is a vastly better source of harvestables.

Southsun’s flora is comparatively useless (passion fruits versus orrian truffles, omnomberries, saffron, lotus, etc…), and Orr has vastly more resource nodes including more top-quality nodes (5 ori/ancient wood nodes in both Cursed Shore and Malchor’s Leap). Now that Orr’s mob density and obnoxiousness has been drastically reduced, the drive to collect those resources is much stronger.

That said, personally I do still hit Southsun in resource sweeps, just for the sake of completeness, but it’s now vastly inferior to Orr. Whereas I previously started resource runs at Southsun, I now hit Orr first. If I fail to complete the run, I miss a mere 2 ori and ancient nodes.

The only real in-game pressure to be in Southsun right now comes from ascended gear infusion recipes. I’m sure that some players view 250 karka shells and/or passion fruits as worth a +5 stat increase, but I for one do not – and I suspect I am in the majority.

All of the mobs in Southsun are too challenging for the returns you get. There isn’t even any high level herb nodes. There too many karka guarding all the resources, which makes it very unenjoyable.

Sad, because most of it is very pretty to look at. But todays mmo’s think we want extra-challenging and maze like annoying environments. Remember the good old days when you could be just be a crafter, and not have to fight any mobs to gather resources.

I really only went there for daily rich ori runs (and to get the ancient wood and passifloras on the way). The rich ori node could have been left in once they added the lvl req for the karma gathering tools but because they added guesting at the same time they couldn’t. If the node reset was totally character based instead of character based per server you wouldn’t have this issue. It’s sort of a snowball problem because of design.

I have no urge to return to the site of the single worst gaming session I’ve had in GW2. I’d trade in that 20 slot Karka bag I got for finishing that wretched event in exchange of erasing those 3-4 hours from my memory in a second.

I’d only consider visiting Southsun again if they do a heavy revamp as they did with Orr. Adding waypoints and lots of mob rebalancing would be a start.

Esp. adjusting density of those headcrabs. Those mobs might have been an amusing idea on paper but they should not have been placed in such numbers that simply trying to navigate that zone is like pulling teeth.
