So what happens to Southsun?
none, I won’t be going back there.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
It will be ignored for the most part. People generally only really went for the rich ori. The odd person farmed karkas though.
Not really, no. No real reason to ever go back. The mobs are too hard, rewards are too little. You can make much better money in dungeons and better rewards/resources in Orr.
i supposed the rich ori node was removed after some complain about low levels mining them using the karma mining pick, which i think pretty lame . they could have simply add the requirement for using it to be lvl 60+ , and leave the rich vein alone….
nope, no reason to go back there….. i hope anet is reading this… another one of your game content abandoned by the community…..
Archeage = Farmville with PK
Southsun will end in much the same way the Karka event started.
At the moment, nothing much. But I believe Anet said that they will improve the zone in the future.

so full and lotsa overflows with terrible lag/dc?
I go there pretty regular to farm barracudas for armored scale and a guild mate is trying to get enough Passion flowers for a piece a jewelry. Pretty much stuff like this is the typical reason people go there. To many hard mobs to do more than that.
To prove your manliness by soloing karka veterans and champions.
Used to farm Karka and other mobs there cuz it just felt nicer than Orr, but now Orr is awesome and Southsun is boring. Need some events there and maybe one day my dreams will come true and they’ll super expand the ocean there with tons of awesome underwater stuff. c.c and Quaggans.
Probably gets lost in the shuffle as some other new upcoming zone they’re working on exhibits greater potential.
It’s not like Southsun had much potential anyway. It’s a stale rock, with its most noteworthy story arc being the continued development of some NPC faction vacation resort…sounds like a dud to me.
I go to karka island still. Usually to test new builds and see how quickly and efficiently I can shred a karka

Curious, veteran or young?

Doubtful. The rich node was removed because if it wasn’t, you’d be getting 3x rich ori nodes very easily. Now you can get 3x regular ori nodes, which is pretty much equal to the one rich node.
Southsun Cove always felt like a huge missed opportunity.
After months of farming Plinx in Orr I thought ANet might give us a real alternative to farming Orr. Instead though they nerfed Plinx (which is fine) and instead gave us a zone with:
-Very dangerous mobs, especially for glass-cannons
-A zone with low event density
-A zone with very few “mass spawn” events
The only good thing about the Southsun cove is the relatively high density of Mithril and other crafting mats. But that’s hardly worth the visit considering how abundant they are elsewhere.
If it weren’t for the Rich Orchi Node and the Karma tools the Cove would barely have any visitors at all.
I don’t see any reason to go to Southsun Cove. The veterans are barely soloable, the normal trash is hard and there’s no vistas or skill points. The zone reminds me of Silithus in World of Warcraft in that it’s a high-level zone with cool rewards to get (orichalcum, karka scales, etc.) but the amount of work required is totally not worth it. I’d like some “Living story” to happen in the zone and transform it for the future. At least some vistas, heart points and skill points would be nice to put it on equal footing with the other zones.

The odd mesmer, anyways. So much reflection.
do not understand the need to limit the amount of ori node to so few around Tyria. Honestly, they should increase the amount by a tenth fold, scatter them around Tyria and instead make more lvl 80 craftables/ skins so ppl can have some more incentive to visit lower level zones and at the same time have more stuff to do.
Still a decent concentration of resource nodes. It’s a really easy place to get the 20 gathers for the daily.

It’s too cheap, says their economist. Does not promote gem sales. Makes the rest of the legendary mats seem even more ridiculously overpriced.
I think Anet should expaind on it with:
more islands
events chains
small resort town (that’s how it was advertised)
Improved drops
More types of enemies
rework enemy mobs
Paths with fewer enemies
portals to there in anther zone
add coral reefs with underwater coral caves
(edited by Onshidesigns.1069)
i think it should be reworked to pirate treasure island with pirate ships and pirate patrols and randomized treasure hunting events with pirates and digging and more pirates
(no zombie ninja pirate robots on unicorns just oldfashioned pirates Captn Hook style )
Southsun has always felt sort of unfinished for me- I didn’t even go the for the rich Ori node tbh.
I am sure they will expand on it in the future
@ Onshedesigns: those are awesome ideas.
It also needs a bit more neutral wildlife for it to feel real I think
With the latest update, they seem to have kind of removed any incentive to do the Fractals too. Difficulty on the “easier” fractals and bosses has been increased.
So the whole November update was kind of worthless.
Granted, the main reason they introduced the Fractals was to have an endless grind for people wanting a “challenge.”
But now the rewards/profit vs time/risk from the Fractals seems less than normal dungeons. (Which they’re now trying to get people to do, by fixing them…)
I have no idea. I went for the event then left and other then randomly checking on it once (gave up when I was spawned by the hard monsters) haven’t went back since.
At the moment it’s a nice place to mine mithril, wood and orichalcum not to mention the 2 jumping puzzles.
In the future I could see some interesting developments. For example, we know the Consortium has some questionable operations running in the area so I can see a future update involving implementation of new dynamic events, a storyline and a dungeon.
Plenty of opportunities to expand upon the concept.
Southsun needs to die. I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Kidding aside though, the place is beautiful, the creatures are interesting and the idea is great. Just too bad its so poorly designed. There’s so few events going on, and the enemies are a bit tougher, especially the big karka, but they drop nothing. There is even a slayer achievement for the karka, which doesn’t make any sense.
A few things I think will definite spruce this place up are:
- Huge meta events: Basically scrape all these lame small events. The island feels larger than life, but suffers from inactivity. Not only on the players’ side, but across the board. Design large scale events that escalate across the entire islands.
The Consortium should definitely play a role here. Look we all already know they suck, they’re the reason the karka lashed out, and most of us dislike them. Play them off as the ignorant kittens that they are, and use that in the events. Let us challenge they’re ideals as much as we’re battling to save they’re idiotic hides from the karka.
For instance, there can be a large event chain where they become interested in an artifact and take large scale initiative to get it, however, this item seems to rile up the karka. So the event chains require us to stop them, while also making sure the karka remain in check.
- Underwater: This was what a lot of people initially expected from the Lost Shore event. However, when there wasn’t any underwater sections, I heard a lot of people sigh with relief. The first problem is to update underwater combat first. A lost of people aren’t keen on it.
Then the potential for underwater Suncove events can be implemented. Now the large scale chain events can go over and under the island, even take a person from one side to the other. That would be great, as this place is perfect from some much needed underwater epicness.
- Karka abilities: I was somewhat disappointed that all the karka possessed a crowd control ability and that was about it. I think they have far more potential, less CC more crazy. Like the crabs grabbing hold of you, or them rolling over players. That’s great, I love that, they should have more of that. For instance, the small ones spray you with a crippling effect. Why not rather have they’re spray apply a debuff called karka saliva. As it stacks you’ll receive odd effects, like dodging causes damage, and dealing damage causes bleeding, and higher stacks cause confusion, and then cripples you.
- Rewards: As of now the drops are terrible. But I’m sure this is a bug, as none of the vets drop anything, which isn’t right. Still I’m thinking the island can maybe have it’s own reward system. The game has so many tokens and another resource would be too much just for Suncove, so perhaps it can be a UI thing. When you arrive there, you’ll get a karka (or Southsun) kill meter, and the more you kill the higher you’ll score. Eventually you can give in your totals to chose a reward, like coins or karma or mats.
I don’t see any reason to go to Southsun Cove. The veterans are barely soloable, the normal trash is hard
I know I’ll get flamed for this (and told to learn how to play), but I agree with this. The foes there are way too hard and you’re really forced to go with a party. Even in Orr (old style), you could move around solo (even though it was slow going due to the enormous amount of Risen…) without too much trouble. In Southsun, it takes way too long to even kill a standard Karka, let alone a veteran one…
I loved the event that spawned Southsun Cove, I’ll admit. Despite the mishaps I had a blast. But I have to agree now, the area is too difficult to farm for too little reward. It’d be nice if ANet revisits the area sometime in the future to make it worth our while.
Yak’s Bend Server
Crimethink [ct]
The Lost Shores minis are gonna rise in price again.
I go there for the relatively easy-to-find Ancient Wood that spawns outside the Karka nest/cave.
Other than that… nah.
Do you even lift, bro?
I go to karka island still. Usually to test new builds and see how quickly and efficiently I can shred a karka
Curious, veteran or young?
The young ones are scarier than the veterans.
I still include Southsun Cove in my harvesting runs, and have been tempted to try to get a passion flower, which I have yet to see despite my horde of passionfruit.
I have also been tempted to try to farm the different creatures for fine crafting materials but have not been motivated to actually try it due to loot drop issues.
At the moment it’s a nice place to mine mithril, wood and orichalcum not to mention the 2 jumping puzzles.
At the moment, Orr is a vastly better source of harvestables.
Southsun’s flora is comparatively useless (passion fruits versus orrian truffles, omnomberries, saffron, lotus, etc…), and Orr has vastly more resource nodes including more top-quality nodes (5 ori/ancient wood nodes in both Cursed Shore and Malchor’s Leap). Now that Orr’s mob density and obnoxiousness has been drastically reduced, the drive to collect those resources is much stronger.
That said, personally I do still hit Southsun in resource sweeps, just for the sake of completeness, but it’s now vastly inferior to Orr. Whereas I previously started resource runs at Southsun, I now hit Orr first. If I fail to complete the run, I miss a mere 2 ori and ancient nodes.
The only real in-game pressure to be in Southsun right now comes from ascended gear infusion recipes. I’m sure that some players view 250 karka shells and/or passion fruits as worth a +5 stat increase, but I for one do not – and I suspect I am in the majority.
Unless they recreate the eta-event in some form, people will only go there to charm the reef drake, maybe if they are going for some of the unique resources, or the puzzles, then never visit the place ever again.
All of the mobs in Southsun are too challenging for the returns you get. There isn’t even any high level herb nodes. There too many karka guarding all the resources, which makes it very unenjoyable.
Sad, because most of it is very pretty to look at. But todays mmo’s think we want extra-challenging and maze like annoying environments. Remember the good old days when you could be just be a crafter, and not have to fight any mobs to gather resources.

I love the look of Southsun! I wish it was converted to a neutral area, like a resort, with some unique vendors there and more tropical themed armour/weapons.
To me it is one of the most beautiful areas of the game, and I love the design of the Karka.
Please please Anet do something with it!!!!
You have to go there to get passion flowers. Ugh. And by ‘get passion flowers’ I mean, farm passiflora for days-weeks-months on end maybe get ONE passion flower. Of the 500 or whatever you need for a full set of jewelry. Sigh. God I hate those things. Come on Anet, give people some other way to acquire them or up the drop rate already.
I really only went there for daily rich ori runs (and to get the ancient wood and passifloras on the way). The rich ori node could have been left in once they added the lvl req for the karma gathering tools but because they added guesting at the same time they couldn’t. If the node reset was totally character based instead of character based per server you wouldn’t have this issue. It’s sort of a snowball problem because of design.
What is Southsun?
I don’t even know why they bothered keeping the zone there, should’ve just had it sank place isn’t worth visiting at all now that they took out the rich ori node.
Dragonbrand – Level 80 – Human Ranger
its the worst desing place in the history of mankind i never ever liked it ye true i whent there for nodes from time to time but now 0 reasons to go there
They should have put FotM in Southsun, at least give people a reason to go and get them out of LA. IMO Southsun is like the F2P version of: Isle of Quel’Danas.

Maybe the red headed step son of Quel’Danas. That island had a lot of stuff to do even after the the content became obsolete.

It sure did. I don’t see why Anet doesn’t take advantages of the answers already known, instead they still try new formulas that gamer’s already know suck and can prove it by the last 15 years of gaming history.
I have no urge to return to the site of the single worst gaming session I’ve had in GW2. I’d trade in that 20 slot Karka bag I got for finishing that wretched event in exchange of erasing those 3-4 hours from my memory in a second.
I’d only consider visiting Southsun again if they do a heavy revamp as they did with Orr. Adding waypoints and lots of mob rebalancing would be a start.
Esp. adjusting density of those headcrabs. Those mobs might have been an amusing idea on paper but they should not have been placed in such numbers that simply trying to navigate that zone is like pulling teeth.

I go there when I don’t want to quit playing quite yet, but don’t have the energy to tackle demanding content. Karka shells and passion fruit come home with me. I wish I could say the same about Passion Flowers, but those are so rare.
Also went there to kill Young Veteran Karka yesterday for the daily.
How to kill karka:
Young:
Ele: Earth 4 on staff/focus, wind 4 focus Arcane shield or vapor form for the spit then just spam conditions.
Guardian: sword 3 and projectile absorbing and reflecting fields work.
Engi: Shield skills/ turrets to take the full force of the spits.
Mes: whatever Mesmers do.
Necro: minions!
Warrior: Shield skills like guardian maybe?
Ranger: Whirling defense.
Thief: Whirling daggers.
veteran young/normal: for young repeat process for normal young yet use both summons (if ele) and your elite summon (if others and human). For Vet normal, dodge its jump and roll and block its children with blocks/fields. Party helps.
How to kill karka:
[snip]
The thread isn’t questioning how to kill them. The point here is that the zone is purposeless.
