Soulbound/Accountbound

Imo there should never have been soulbound. Accountbound is great (even if it sometimes impedes you to trade/mail things to other players).
Hey guys, I’m just curious if anyone find Soulbound/Account bound system to be obnoxious?
I don’t really know what it is about it, perhaps coming from 7 years of Guild Wars where ‘soulbound’ was an option, not compulsory.
What are your opinions of this?
Apart from armor – all armor in GW1 was soulbound on acquire.
I have mixed feelings on it. For some things, like personal story rewards and HoM items I think it makes sense, for others it seems excessive, like a lot of mid-level weapons and armor. I doubt it’d have a major impact on the economy if you could sell these items, or pass them between characters so making them soulbound seems unnecessary.
On the other hand there’s things which IMO should really be at least accountbound that can be sold. For example I think all legendaries should be accoubound on acquire so you have to actually make one yourself instead of buying it on the TP.
The thing that bothers me most though is how inconsistent it seems. Especially with minis. For example the mini Karka, Karka Hatchlings and Reef Drake were rare drops from an RNG box during Lost Shores and even more rarely from enemies in Southsun. They can be traded. The Wintersday Box minis (Mini Festive Golem, Infiniarium and Snowman) were also a rare drop from an RNG box but they’re account bound and can’t be traded.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
At this point, and since they released Transmutation Splitters, I’m sure the only reason behind soulbound items is to make money via the gem store. Which is completely lame, but it’s the only way you can give expensive skins/legendaries to alts.
Certain quest items etc should be soulbound, otherwise I agree with account bound gear putting ownership in the hands of the player. Items are still removed from the market, and quality of life is greatly improved for the player.
There is currently a workaround for moving soulbound gear to other characters on the account, but it is torture.
Example, I have an ascended back item I’d like to shift across, but to complicate matters is has a Desert Rose skin on it. Combined skin + item, it’s worth over 100g.
- To move it, I’d have to use a transmutation splitter to get the rose off.
- Then use a transmutation crystal with some white back straps to make the back item account bound.
- Put the item in the bank and draw it on the intended recipient.
- Use a second transmutation splitter on the back item, which soulbinds it to the recipient.
- Cost ~660 gems; still less than recreating the item.
The irony in my example is that I have an account bound ascended back from Southsun for which I don’ have to go to such extreme lengths with.
Ascended and legendary items in particular are so costly that making them account bound would be a great addition to quality of life, perhaps distinguishing them from lesser items that are trivial to acquire and replace.
