Stay classy, ArenaNet
How dare ArenaNet tell players in game that they’re making an announcement that will have a massive effect on the future of game content!
THE TENACITY! </sarc>
Wait, WHAT?
Clearly your “refined” tastes are far from the norm.

woah, really? Everyone I know and talked to (and this seems to be the general consensus on the forums as well) seems to be incredibly excited and happy about the announcement. I mean clearly you’re entitled to your own opinion, but I’d be surprised if there are a lot of people out there that share it.
I was so happy when they gave us this info in game, it didn’t make a difference to me how I got it. In fact if you haven’t noticed, the info given to us about Heart of Thorns is almost exclusively in game. They don’t even have the trailer that they gave to us on Youtube yet.
What? We who do not use social media should not be told about news concerning the game? I don’t think so.
It does feel weird to have dates and out-of-game things posted on an in-game cinematic…
But I’ll wait till Mt. Dew and Doritos shows up in game before I freak out.
what’s social media ?
Archeage = Farmville with PK
Lolwhat?
Some people just aren’t happy unless they complain about absolutely everything, I guess.
what’s social media ?
I think it’s that Flitter thing all the young-uns are on about.

that wall wall thingy ? ah ok…..

I actually wish there was more news and information about coming things in game too, maybe some kind of notice/news boards in cities that you could go and read.
I don’t use social medias so I usually miss the latest news until someone posts them into forums.

I was happy to hear about the PAX announcement too. At this point we can bet it’s an expansion is some form, but to see an advertisement in-game was immersion breaking and distressing. Stick the ad on the loading screen, character select screen, fine, that works. But in-game? What’s next, The Goodyear Pact Blimp? Trahearne offering us a 20% discount on the Deluxe Bundle? Where is the line drawn between production and marketing?

I’m just curious, would you have been ok if the video had played minus the little PAX advert screen at the end? I assume so, at which point I do understand what you’re saying. But a lot of people won’t know about this and it’s a hugely effective way to get the news out to all players that something big is coming. I agree that it’s a little immersion breaking, but I guess it was the best way for them to do it.
I think people are confusing “in-game cinematic” with “game trailer.” The video shown at the end was a trailer for Heart of Thorns, not a game cinematic. It was a preview of what’s to come. The living story episode ended before the trailer was shown. The episode ended with…
…the Pact fleet being destroyed. That was end cinematic for Point of No Return. The second video that was shown was the trailer. That is, a preview.
I don’t really see how this is an issue. It was a great surprise for those who played through the episode and it was a great way to get the news out about the next big GW2 thing without spoiling the surprise for people playing.
Funny how people have been demanded that information should be shown in-game since released. And now when it finally is it is the worst thing ever apparently.

I was really stunned by the ad in the game. I didn’t think it was badly done…but it certainly caught me completely off guard.
I can honestly see where the OP is coming from, but it didn’t bother me personally.

That’s that thing with all them doohickies and the chirpy bird! I seen it on the television.
I was very happy to see the trailer in game. It added more excitement to the end of the season
The trailer in-game was a sound decision on ANet’s part, it is all about reaching the largest potential audience not eveyone reads the coverage gw2 gets (which isn’t typically mainstream) or follows gaming conventions.
Besides the trailer was beautifully done… what they do with the trailer after HoT is closer or the date on it has passed ie. it is no longer relevant it game is what might make it a negative but for now I think it was the right decision.
LOL I can’t stop laughing at this hahahahah. No comment really. Let the thread rot into oblivion.
Guys, I seriously don’t think the OP had a problem with the video being shown in game, they had a problem with the PAX announcement at the end of the video.
Wait, WHAT?

Didn’t you mean NorN ? XD
A while ago there were people complaining on the forum that stuff was not announced in-game and that people had to come to the forum or website to get information. Now they announce it in-game and people are upset about this.
Sigh…
I like how it’s not having us wait half a kitten year. 11 days from announcement day, that’s great:)
Funny how people have been demanded that information should be shown in-game since released. And now when it finally is it is the worst thing ever apparently.
“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
Personally, I like that they advertised it in game. It’s big news and it should be relayed to the people in the game because of that, I certainly can’t understand how it can be thought to be in bad taste (my own monocle certainly didn’t fall out and shatter on my mahogany desk or ivory keyboard) but it takes all sorts.
Edit: also “a nice kick to the groin”? Really? I’d expect shockingly uncouth language from a ne’er do well or corner boy, not on the august pages of this fine website! I bid you good day, OP!

I completely disagree. I liked the trailer and I really appreciate that they finally start telling us thing in the game instead of the social media about which I couldn’t care less.
People were really happy about the trailer. I liked it also. I don’t even use social media, and there’s a lot of others who don’t.
I appreciate being told in game.

As your sovereign Wall of Texter and self-titled RantMaster, I declare Anet’s inclusion of the announcement to be grand. Lovely. Well placed. Poised. Dashing. Elegant. Inspired. Fortuitous! Serendipitous.
Pretty darn swell. The OP needs moar cowbell, however.
I expected this thread to be an announcement that Will Farrell was going to narrate the next LS chapter.
The disappointment makes my left testicle burn with the fire of Zeus’s beard.

This. There are players that don’t use social media or simply don’t know where to find the information for announcements like this. Considering this method is a medium to contact ALL of their players (who keep up with the story) about a huge announcement, it’s sure to reach the most relevant audience.
Personally I liked the video. Didn’t really feel like an ad till the very end with the dates etc. The actual video felt like a continuation of the ending cutscene at least for me. The GS/Spear mid air kill was sic as kitten.

I did find the PAX announcement a bit jarring, especially after I had a total OH S**T reaction to the trailer.
Because, after the BS that was episode 8, that was the only thing I could get excited about. :\

I get what you’re getting at, but the PAX thing wasn’t the advertisement in this case – the entire cutscene was. As someone else has mentioned before, it wasn’t part of the storyline, it was a trailer, a foreshadowing of what’s to come next – how is that immersive? Like that thing you got from the story was a happy pill and your character was tripping and seeing the future?
If you don’t prefer this – fair enough… different people have different opinions. But I for one (and a lot of other people it appears) really appreciated the whole thing. Plus, isnt it really fitting to inform the people who actually play the game of that upcoming content before anyone else?

Or that particularly revileable hairdo for Charr in some neon blue color?
Or the cake gun? (Not to fault, I love that stupid gun~)

When you finished the final mission in in Guild Wars 1, the credits rolled on the screen while you are still playing. OP would have had a fit about that too I bet.
I think the op is feeling like the end was some sort of cheap Hollywood preview. I don’t know about you guys but I’m getting a feeling the story is done like cheap Bollywood production…
I’m not seeing the problem with Anet “advertising” news for the game you’re currently playing inside the game itself. Isn’t that by far the most appropriate place for it? “Gee, you like this game enough to finish this living story chapter, so maybe you’ll also be interested in this upcoming content?”. Seems perfectly reasonable to me. Its not like we’re getting an advertisement for NCSoft’s next big MMO or something unrelated like that.
And much better to have it in-game where everyone playing can see it than post it on Twitter or even here on the forum where plenty of people will miss it.
It thrilled me because it gave that “official” feeling to “something big is coming.” We on the forums have known about the PAX panel, we’ve looked at the panel announcement (which is the same as in this trailer end), and the many-page thread about it has yowled that it can’t be anything big since ANet didn’t ballyhoo it. Well, now they have!
I just hope that after the panel, all in-game playings of the trailer will cut out the splash announcement, as it will at that point look careless and sloppy to have an ad for something that’s over.
I just thought it was surprisingly far into the game to finally show the title screen.
I guess GW2 is going to be longer than I thought.
We do open missions every Sunday night.

what’s social media ?
It’s an electronic means of avoiding real communication with people.
Not sure OP understands how business work. In game advertising is nothing new. You can start complaining when we see Pepsi cans all over LA, and Evon sporting new Black Lion Nike shoes. Oh, and perhaps some Old Navy town clothes for 500 Gems a piece.
People need to stop using the “First they say this, then they say this” argument. What “people” say is irrelevant to what one “person” is saying, unless that one person was initially part of those people. If this person wasn’t one of the people that complained about them not putting information in the game, then it’s irrelevant that other people wanted it in there.
However, I don’t see how it’s really any more immersion-breaking than achievement announcements and wiggly chests popping up any time you complete anything. I dunno about anybody else, but my immersion is quickly broken when I complete any cutscene in a story and get reminded that yes, this is a game with game things.
I guess all of social media, word of mouth and whatever print ads you’re running for PAX wasn’t enough – you have to bombard players in-game too? Shameless advertising. The trailer was done in very bad taste. A nice kick to the groin for those players still around to enjoy your content.
PAX better be worth our trouble.
At the moment you’re the bad taste.

[SPOILER] Computer games are not real, sry if i broke your immersion.
The cinematic is nice. What destroyed it for me is shown at the end of the cinematic with the date and stuff. They should have cut that portion off from the in-game cinematic and only use it in advertising trailers.
I think it’s a bad editing decision.
