It use to be really easy to sell Guild Wars 2 to my friends but …it’s so difficult now.

Everything sounds amazing, but when they start asking about “end gear/content” and I have to explain them it takes a minimum of 12 weeks for 2 accessories, a dedicated 20+ days of dailies and 1 monthly completion for a necklace and 20+ dailies from Fractals (unless you’re lucky with RNG) for 2 rings.

They look at me like “Are you serious?” – It’s a complete turn off and I can’t even defend you, Anet.

The most powerful/credible advertisement is word of mouth. Consider what kind of “words” are coming from our mouths recently.

What I’m saying is, please reconsider how your “gear treadmill” is earned. We understand “exotic’s were too easy to get” but please, this is not the right direction. If Ascended will be apart of Guild Wars 2 forever, add more fun ways to earn them that doesn’t involve a Daily. Maybe that means actually adding challenging content.

TLDR ; Dailies/Weeklies are not a quality way to earn end game gear and it’s NOT quality content. If someone asked me what Guild Wars 2 end game was, I’d tell them Dailies (Dragons, Fractals, Dungeons, Daily daily, Monthly, Guild Missions, etc).

Please go back to the drawing board, Anet.
I love your game but I’m concerned with the direction you’re taking.

Take this into consideration.

Other games: You need 23+ other guild members to get the end all be all of gear and it takes 4-6 months to fully deck yourself out.

Guild Wars 2: End game content can be done solo without the need of 23+ other guild members to get the gear. It takes 4-6 months to deck yourself out.

I said deck yourself out, not your entire account out. You shouldn’t be able to deck an entire account out in 4-6 months of game play because otherwise companies will lose money. While you might be able to get some pieces in other games you won’t be able to deck more than one fully out unless your guild is led by idiots or it has really kitteny loot drops.

I love this game for the simple fact, I don’t need 23+ other idiots to get the gear I want. I don’t fight over it with a DKP system or lose because of some stupid RnG. I earn it by completing dailies/monthlies, doing guild missions, and no I am not fully decked out in ascended gear and won’t be for a long time.

The biggest selling point of this game is you aren’t fighting 23+ people for the loot you earn. Note: I take 23+ as this is a normal raid system in most other online games. This has been brought down to 10+, but you do not receive the end all be all gear of a game with that little people.

Yes, let’s be patient for something they said back in November. It is what now? March?

They’ve added two new Ascended items since then and guess what? They gated those as well as the first one. They didn’t make them obtainable through other means. They gated them straight from the start. What’s worse, is they admit it was a mistake to gate the first set of Ascended gear. But they did it two more times after that.

So when exactly is this supposed way of obtaining them through other means going to happen? Or are they going to keep gating all Ascended gear being introduced, and then after we have a full set, they will make other ways to obtain them? So by then, we’ll have a ton more currencies to add to the tons we have already, and then other options to get Ascended gear in probably 2014.

Yeah, let’s just be patient for that.

It didn’t take me long at all to gear my character’s out from Raiding because I’ve always been in exceptional Raiding Guilds in most MMOs. DKP isn’t the only system, either.

In addition, it was fun to gear out my character because I was progressing in something. I felt accomplished afterwords and I enjoy being challenged. Those 24 or 9 other idiots became friends. I don’t care for solo play in a massively multiplayer online game. I’ve never bothered with dailies before Guild Wars 2.

I just wish they had an option for players like you and then for players like me. I don’t feel challenged, mentally stimulated or accomplished for doing Dailies for my end game gear. Where’s option B?

I guess we have different views on the subject.

It takes 15 weeks to fully level and gear your character out in WoW while playing 10hours per day. Gear is essential to progress.

It takes 15 weeks to fully gear your character out in GW2 while playing for 1hour per day. In addition, the gear is nowhere near essential to progress anywhere other than FotM(agony).

(Numbers are not exact or maybe nowhere close, but consider the context rather than semantics)

I played with Masterworks in Cursed Shore before Ascended gear came out, even if i have full Exotics only now, i’m still doing better in Cursed Shore now than with my Masterworks. I can pull a whole list of raids you cannot do unless you have specific gear in WoW. Would you like to show me an event that i can do with Ascended gear but not Exotic gear?

GW2 is similar to WoW in that it takes time to acquire final gears. If you compare how many days it takes to acquire all the gears, you end up in probably very close number of days. If you compare in how many “hours” though, GW2 is considerably for casuals compared to WoW no-life grinding.

People are confusing “grinding” with “patience”.
Grinding is when i ask you to water the whole greenhouse for me and i’ll give you a carrot per week.
Patience is when i ask you to plant and water 1 carrot per day and wait 1 week for it to grow up so you can harvest it.

You wanna be on your best(Ascended gear) for WvW? But that’s only if you’re a perfectionist. Check how many people on your server actually dont mind playing an upleveled character in WvW with white gears.
Hint: they dont mind, why do you?
I’m on a level 2 thief in white gear with an arrow cart and i am killing you right now Mr.Ascended.

Consider there is a big WvW patch coming end of this month, you will probably get badges>pinks.

Constructive. So constructive.

Fiddlestyx, I can do over 99% of the game without ascended gear. The only content that I may be locked out of is FotM 20+. Heck, you could probably do the vast majority of content in green or gold gear.

However, there are those who have alts (myself included). These people purchased the game knowing what it would take to get all their alts to the highest level of gear. It took effort; the gear was not time gated

Now, we have time gated content. This is VERY unfriendly to people with alts. I could run 100,000 enemies everyday, do every dungeon path three times daily, and attack every grand chest event with everyone of my 9 alts. No matter how much effort or skill I throw at the game, it will take 30 days for an infused amulet, 30 days for two earrings, and two weeks for rings.

No matter how good I am, no matter how much time I throw, I am moving in lockstep with everyone else. Additionally, if someone were to start the game right now, they would be behind everyone else.

A 30 person guild in WvW that started in January will always be more powerful than a 30 person guild in WvW that started in March. That’s not ok.

And yes, they have stated that they will release multiple ways of achieving ascended gear, but what we have instead seen is more time gates for each piece.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc

No really. Here’s how you make Ascended items far less painful to attain. You make a vendor in the wuvwuv starting locations who sells each Ascended piece for 500 Badges of Honor.

I would prefer seeing this than the current daily/Laurel system.

Some people object to the term “time gate” but that truly is what we have now with the Laurel system. There simply are better options than what has been implemented.

I wish there were no Dailies at all. I would much prefer Weeklys that required you to do seven sets of Dailies to complete on your own time/schedule. Sure the dailies are easy and can be completed quickly. I just don’t have a schedule where I can log in every day.

I would prefer no time gate at all but there are better options than the current dailies.

MMOs have time sinks/gated content and will always have time sinks/gated content because unlike single player games, their income relies on players hanging around. Some have monthly subscriptions, and item shop or both but they rely on having an active population spending real money to keep the servers up, the content fresh and the bugs patched.

Complaining about them is like complaining you have to dribble the ball in basketball or that you can’t use your hands in football/soccer.

Not really, you need to play MMOs other than the themepark variety.

Furthermore this was the game that promoted itself on being different from other MMORPGs, on things like “no gear treadmill”, so what WoW, Rift, etc do is irrelevant.

Sorry Behellagh, I just do not agree with what you said.

Time sinks/ gated content are simple solutions that are easily implemented and not very creative. Re-read the OP and tell me that the current Laurel system would be easy to sell to potential new players. Wouldn’t it be better to have something new and innovative and fun instead of a standard time sink/ gated content?

Wouldn’t it be better to have such an amazing experience in a game that drives sales to new players instead of having to deal with time sinks and gated content that exist to squeeze pennies out of the current player base?

Just because time sinks and gated content have been used recently in MMORPGs does not mean that they are necessary and we “…will always have time sinks/gated content .”

Time sinks and time gates are two different things, imo. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Time Sink

  • Requires repeating content a set amount of times to achieve a goal (i.e. GW2’s 8 dungeons).
  • Let’s say it takes 20 dungeon runs to get what you want and each run is 1 hour. That means that it takes 20 hours to achieve your goal. You can do that in 1 day or 20.

Time Gate

  • Places a limitation on how much progress you can make when working towards an award (Laurels and Commendations)
  • Let’s say that player A plays 10 hours a day and player B plays 1 hour a day. Both players do their dailies and monthlies.
  • Player A could double his gaming time to 20 hours a day; in one month he will only have 30/40 laurels assuming he does all his dailies
  • Player B could cut his gaming time in half; in one month he will only have 30/40 laurels assuming he does all his dailies.
  • No matter how much effort you put forth, you will walk in lockstep with everyone who start at the same time as you

The problems with time gating are the following:

  • if you start later, you will always be weaker. New people are kitten in that respect
  • If you have alts, you are SoL
  • With the current options, you must PvE to play WvW more effectively (Yes, they are adding more options, but we haven’t seen them).
Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc

I saw laurels as simply another currency reward for dailies and monthlies. The carrot if you are willing to play a half an hour to an hour a day to earn them. A way to steer players back into zones long since abandoned once the player out leveled them (which isn’t needed due to their auto level adjust system). A way to keep the population active because a world full of players everywhere is better than one that’s not.

Now since I’ve never played any of the FotM content, I had no idea that laurels are also spent there, I’ve been using them to buy random armor and dyes or saving up for a mini-pet.

I’m sure lots of other new players who play the PvE content have yet to do Fractals or even know what that means unless they are dragged into them via PUGs or guilds. It’s not like the game tells you what they are or how to get there in any straightforward manner (along with what any of the dungeon or PvP currencies are good for).

Now since I’ve only played “themepark” MMOs this doesn’t seem out of the ordinary and is totally expected and acceptable. The only non-“themepark” MMO I can think of is EVE and I certainly don’t want to see a sword and sorcery version of that because I’m not interested in being either a mere insignificant player in worlds ruled by those who can play a hell of a lot more than me or where open PvP is as common as the cold.

This game wasn’t advertised or reviewed, at least as how saw it, as an open world but one where a lot of the older conventions have been replaced with less restrictive ones, not eliminated. So yes, you’re all crying me a river because the game doesn’t reward those who can devote substantially more time to it than the slightly above average active player.

We should be playing because we enjoy the playing, not because we are getting an hourly “wage” for playing.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

I don’t really see why a non-sub MMO like GW2 needs gated content and artificial time extenders. Those are elements born of needign people to keep subbing. GW2 doesn’t need that. This game relies off of Gem sales and Box sales, neither of which rely on constant logging in. I realize online worlds need people, but the game has people playing it. That’s not an issue.

In the end, this shift to behavior manipulation leaves me perplexed.

But they need to keep players playing. An item shop source of income is dependent on a large active player population because they only need minority of those players to buy the proxy currency to use in the shop. A large active player population is also attractive to other players because MMOs simply aren’t as much fun if you can’t play with others while an empty MMO simply won’t retain new players for very long as they wander an empty world (last man on Earth syndrome).

What “end game gear” is so awesome that you are willing to spend a ton of time to earn it? How is it SO much better than the Karma gear from Orr? What content needs it? Why is that content SO much better than the rest of the game? Is it a case of “I need gear X to do content Y just to get more gear X to do more content Y”. You likely aren’t leveling anymore, you probably have all exotic armor and weapons already.

Why the need? I never understood why players NEED to min/max every character with the most exclusive loot in the game because the stats are a fractional % better than what you already have. WHY?

No, you’ve possibly broken the heck out of it at that cost. You can’t arbitrarily slap a price on it, there is a curve it should at least partly conform to. Or else you run into issues.

Also, it’s probably taking so long because it’s on the end of the design once everything is done so they create the NPC and don’t have to go back and patch his inventory. That’s how I’d do it.

I used to log in to GW2 and feel I could pretty much do anything I wanted based on my mood or whim, regardless of which character I logged on.

I could roam and explore, craft, WvW look into new skins for my armor/weapons. Just wandering around bumping into events and hidden “quests” was very rewarding. I got karma, coin and some XP and another notch toward some achievement.

Now, I have a daily system that has a nice reward but I can’t stand half of the taskers, and let’s not even talk about the monthlies. I don;t like GW2’s dungeons, none of them, ANet does awful, un-fun tedious dungeons.

My opinion was fine, never bothered anyone, until ANet decided to make dungeons mandatory for progression.

The game is getting more and more hoop-driven.

ANet is social engineering players to the point where: who the bloody hell is playing this game, me or ANet?

I also realize that I will never, ever have Ascended gear on my characters. I had been content to know I could acquire exotics and have the BIS items for the game, but that’s toast now.

I acquire karma, but what good is it after you by exotic armor? Where are the exotic weapons to purchase with karma? Or skins? Or things other than basil?

The proliferation of in-game currencies is a tell-tale indicator for how the game is creeping into that very familiar place all MMO’s tend to go.

And, the game’s not even a year old yet.

I like the idea of having to do my dailies and monthlies and fractals to get my sweet ascended gear because. TOO BAD for casual players who wanna just hop in and easily get their ascended gear! If you play casual then your gonna have casual gear. If you want immediate rewards for casual play then MMOS are not for you sorry. I earned my kitten asceneded gear did you?

To OP also just let your friends play a bit at your computer to see if they like it. If that is not an option then why do you bring up dailies and “grinding” to them first? Tell them that there are awesome races and professions to play with all different play styles and its hands down one of the most beautiful mmos to date and that the combat is amazing and makes WoW combat look like a sorry game of bingo.

Beautiful, maybe; fun is debatable, hence this forum topic.

Maybe not everyone is a loot-centric grasper of carrots, may be some people want to play a game for fun and not for endless progression based on loot.

How about make content fun, and reward players by having them gain abilities or skills in a horizontal type or broadening method?

Why resort to gimmicks like gear-gated content, or make on dungeon (or any dungeon for that matter) completely central to a players measure of success.

The player should be able to freely set their own goals and achieve them without ANet telling them to specifically play the game a certain way in order to be successful.

The dungeons are so different and some more challenging than others. Sorry but in about every mmo I can think of you must do dungeons to progress in gear. Its a FANTASY game/mmo. Sounds like you have burned out just take a break my friend and come back to it.

Yes, but it was not my experience that the world was empty at some point and the need for these artificial time sinks existed. If there was a problem it was that Orr or FOTM had too high a rewards advantage over other areas of the game. Changes and improvements to incentives has improved that. The gating of some of the rewards isn’t the big draw to those improvements, but the immediate reward. I’d still do dailies if it was karma, gold and laurels, even if Ascended items weren’t tied to laurels.

Improving the drops on meta bosses has spread traffic out and we aren’t all living in Orr now. That was accomplished without the time sinks.

Also, many of us came to this game to escape this behavior manipulation stuff. Whomever these practices brings in, it also begins pushing some of us away.

Why can’t both groups have their own way of obtaining the gear?

Where is the choice? Anet tries to pride themselves on “choice” but why introduce something that is this important without much of it? Why is the only way of obtaining the best items in the game boring? “I can’t wait to get home so I can get my daily done so I can get an ascended piece!!” Said no one ever. What if you have two or more characters? If anything Anet should at least enlighten us on how they plan on addressing this issue.

Tell me the event you have to have ascended gear to complete, please.

Guild Wars 2: End game content can be done solo without the need of 23+ other guild members to get the gear. It takes 4-6 months to deck yourself out.

let me clarify the math for you because you seem confused. it takes 4-6 months for the trinkets with 1 stat.

if you run more than 1 build like most people then you’re looking at 12+ months for 1 single character.

if you have alts (which is heavily encouraged i might add because of the lack of endgame) you’re going to spending 3 years getting your gear.

So people complain about having to put time into a game that is fun and beautiful to explore? What game isn’t a time sink?

Beautiful, maybe; fun is debatable, hence this forum topic.

If you want immediate rewards for casual play then MMOS are not for you sorry. I earned my kitten asceneded gear did you?

Maybe not everyone is a loot-centric grasper of carrots, may be some people want to play a game for fun and not for endless progression based on loot.

How about make content fun, and reward players by having them gain abilities or skills in a horizontal type or broadening method?

Why resort to gimmicks like gear-gated content, or make on dungeon (or any dungeon for that matter) completely central to a players measure of success.

The player should be able to freely set their own goals and achieve them without ANet telling them to specifically play the game a certain way in order to be successful.

Ok so play it casually for fun. Ascended gear stats do not make you SO MUCH better than a toon with exotic gear. Exotic gear is still REALLY good and easy for “non loot centric” players. You can set our own goals now. The new daily system you can pick and choose what you want to do and to be quite honest my dailies are done just by me playing how I would play regularly. My daily chest would pop up and I would be like “oh yea I forgot I had dailies”. The dailies are so easy and effortless. Did you see the monthly this month? omg thats an easy batch of laurels right there. As far as dungeons go. I dont know what to say back to your comment about them but …this is a fantasy game rpg…Its gonna have dungeons.

Nope, I don’t level Fractals. I may poke it with a stick now and then and Swampland Fractal reminds me of why I hate it. Almost as much as I hate the asura.

Notably, if you check other topics, you’ll see I have argued that Ascended is only necessary (strictly speaking) for higher levels of Fractals. The effectiveness of it in other parts of the games is either irrelevant or debatable.
