[Suggestion] Having a childhood
Um… No?
It sounds cool, and it even helps explain the awful leveling (pardon: I meant NPE). However at this point I think the majority of players want something to do at 80, not more to get to 80.

This, it would cause a lot of PR issues, and even some legal issues in some areas of the world. Not to mention that the adventure represents years of practice and experience in a profession before they are proficient enough to set out into the world (in Sylvari cases the experience is relayed via The Dream) even as a lvl 1 character.
uuu didnt think we ever really die i was more like we get knocked out?
in fairy tales its quite common kids go on adventure
or do we get legal cases against Hensel and Gretel?
No. Just no. I don’t even want to start giving reasons why.
If that was the case I would never even consider Guild Wars to begin with.

Although I somewhat agree, NCsoft have already made at least one game where you can make a child-like character. In Aion you can do this: you can make your character short in stature and proportioned like a child, with a child-like face and even wih a child-like voice and phrases.
I’m not sure what the PR response was like for this, but I’d assume it was neutral at worst considering you can still create a child character.
As it goes, you can kinda already make child-like characters in GW2. Human character creation has a load of soft-featured, round, child-like faces along with more child/teen-like body choices. The only thing that would ruin the immersion for me is that this “child-character” would still have an adult voice… which is a little disturbing :P
I certainly wouldn’t mind more customisability in the game. I’d hope that they would add new faces and body styles for all races. It’d be good to see more diversity and I’d hope that if they added the option to make your character look younger, they’d also add something to make your character look more elderly. I’d also hope that with the increased customisability there would be a choice of character voices as well in order to better suit your choices.

And then once your character hits 500 hours played it dies of old age.
You dont have to be one to love one.
I find very beautiful suggestion; i remember zelda and final fantasy 11 having same. It give life behind character instead chose class, weapon, build and server and world, that all. Lving story is story for game; class and world but having personal living story for character would be beautiful. Like deep personal history history.
I want experience elder dragon history before elder dragon become adult dragon? Maybe also visit elder dragon world and experience as baby-adult?
Maybe arena net can make personal living story for character, class when they were born and grow? and visit there place; like past, family? and maybe visit them have effect on future?
very beaufiful suggestion Balsa

Actually yes….. against the parents.
The parents take the siblings out into the Forrest and hope they die there.
But serious…. if i wanna play Sims 3 i would play Sims 3.
All these let’s be childs or let’s get married is getting on my nerves.
If that is going through i demand modern Airplane combat simulations over Lions Arch
or World of Tanks battlefields on every open map

First, there is a difference between “child-like” and an actual child. Not to mention, Anet has actually already given a base reason for this in an interview. From the interview (referencing Taimi):
ESRB has policies against harming children, Scruffy (her golem), is ANet’s answer to that. He will do anything to protect her, fight, become a bunker, or even just pick her up and walk away from danger. Scruffy was Taimi’s own creation.
From a technical standpoint, it’s a lot of extra effort.
Think about character models. You’d have to make sure that each armor skin and animation works for the ‘kid’ frame and the ‘adult’ frame.
On another point, Asura kids are TINY so good luck even seeing them in a combat and Charr kids practically have no character model (just shrunken down adult Charr) which puts the game’s limited extra models on the forefront when it honestly needs to be kept in the background.
Also also, Sylvari don’t even exist as children. They are pretty much created as adult so kind of leaves a whole race out of the loop on this idea.
People who don’t want to play kids must be those types of adults who think they are smarter than kids. No, you just got more knowledge.
I’m so tired of stupid boring adults who think being boring is fun. I hate them. Most adults have some serious problems. I don’t understand why they want to be boring, bully, mean and self-centered all the time.
All adults suck hard. And you enforce your corruption on kids, alot.
Stop making more monsters, please.
Wow, it’s like reading a LiveJournal entry of mine from when I was 14 and upset that my parents grounded me.
As for the OP, I don’t see how it could work. Sylvari, for example, are never children. Would there just be no Sylvari in this situation? Plus, the story would have to be reworked to make sure any deaths were not those of children (due to the typical restrictions based around child characters in certain media). And, as a personal note, I have no interest in making GW2 more like The Sims. I love GW2. I love The Sims. I would not love more of a hybrid between the two.
It would look funny to have a party of 10 years old humans, norn, asura and charr playing with a fully adult 10 years old sylvari..
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
The game takes place between 1325-1328 AE. Please explain how aging three years can make a child an adult.
For non-lore reasons, I also disagree with this suggestion only because it is both impractical and unnecessary. The amount of work to texture and armor children, not to mention all of the other issues with children being in dangerous situations, as well as the additional voice acting, a revamp of the personal story (a kid is not going to be able to save Shaemoor or take on ancient Ascalonian ghosts, for example), the lack of sylvari being part of this system (they are full-grown and essentially naive adults when born), as well as implementing an aging system, etc etc
For a different game, one built new from the ground up, playing from a child to an adult could be feasible and could even be fun. But this is Guild Wars 2, an established MMO of a little over two years old. This kind of design change would be something to take place far before reaching the public. Sorry, but no.

about if i wanna play sims is not a real argument sorry u just getting ur argument to sound strong but its not since I can say why play a Thief if i wanna play a thief i play Assasins Creed or Robin hood if i want be a ranger :P
technical problems …. I not really see why we should care ? there are always problems even if u bring a bagsort in. Or a new dye color
so like it dont like it but get a real argument.
you be just a kid for lets say 10 levels or like suggested as a flashback in the PS
I very much like that idea too we already have flashbacks of the past. A small instance where you remember how u became a Thief or Guardian could be cool
I would be OK with you playing as an adolescent for the intro portion (if it makes sense to do it), but as soon as you finish that tutorial area, it’s like a few years went by and now you are an adult.
Then again, I still prefer it the way it is now over this option.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
It has possibilities, but there would be issues as others have described . . . maturity and blame references not withstanding. Still, to be honest, I play and am playing Guild Wars with a ‘child-like’ character. Made him as short as possible with this thought in mind.
I suppose one could go the same route, with a little imagination here, depending on the race.
After all, aren’t Sylvari more or less adolescent anyway? You pretty much start that race after being born . . . again, more or less.
(edited by Ardenwolfe.8590)
It would be interesting, although I’d think keeping the childhood to a very short starting instance would be ideal (and also making it optional). Mind you Sylvari’s won’t be getting much out of this though…
no thank you. Playing Fable’s intro scarred me for life ;(
Might be neat…
But frankly, I don’t wanna walk into a city a see a ton rule34 RPing with a crowd of level 1’s.

I’m not that big on the RP front in Guild Wars 2, but how likely is it to actually find people doing ERP in major cities? The emotes system is almost like, map wide.
People would surely always do it in their personal home instance.

The only times I’ve “seen” it outside of instances were while wandering around The Grove. Obviously, it’s nothing I see daily, but it’s happened quite a few times. that being said, I doubt we’d ever see something that could possibly result in legal action in the very public areas of the game.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
This suggestion would involve rewriting the entire game, which currently occurs over a period of a year or two at most. A character starting off as an eight year old child at character creation would be no more than ten at max level.
For all intents and purposes the character would be stuck as a child for the remainder of the life of the game.
Trahearn may be an idiot but I dont think even he would put a nine year old inpositon to be second in command of the Pact.

You mean the OP which suggests becoming a teenager within a few days (character time) of being a child? Or which would require rewriting the game story otherwise ?

What in the unholy armpit of Baal is this? I can’t even — it’s just — baaah.
There is no place for an like this in either the gameplay or the presented narrative. In Tyeia, children seem to be children, not fully trained adventurers, mercenaries and soldiers with any ability to do anything a real world child can’t do.
Presuming a few things, it might be that children with magical aptitude start showing it at young ages, though the pre- adolescent superpowered-being trope doesn’t seem to exist here, or in my thinking, mesh at all well worth anything existing to do with the game or its lore.
We already see enough people trying to rp their characters as 14 year old non-sylvari (for whom it might at a stretch at least attempt to make sense) veterans of war, every known skill imaginable with high rank in important lore organizations and being super-inventors and archmages.
Let’s not lower the bar further, please.

Is there a reason every thread lately devolves into, “Na na na! I don’t like you. You’re an idiot,” for some reason?
