Hello,

I have decided to post my idea I’ve come up with couple days ago because I think there is a chance this can improve the player numbers and make profits.

Naval Battles
MMO market basically lacks any kind of strong projects in this tematic field. As far as I know, none of the major MMO players in the industry has this kind of gameplay (except EVE online, but that’s a different league).

What am I talking about?
Imagine you enter the new zone in the map, that’s dedicated to naval themes and mechanics. We have a sea to the south – after all!
You will have whole different set of skills, attributes, experience pool and reward options in this section of the game. You would be able to “level” up your “ship” in a myriad of ways – including getting better equipment, hulls and even racial ones! (Imagine racial design ships – I can come up with a ton of awesome ships in no-time – like Charr pirate ship! super-advanced Asuran floating fortress! Sylvari “living flora” ship … the possibilities are endless!)
The game mechanics would allow you to command your ship and “pilot” her, but also fight on her deck and board other ships (imagine the PvP possibilities, which I will describe later) aswell as dock in new ports, and towns, explore new islands and shores, where you will be able to drop anchor and set foot and explore, quest and fight on land as usual.

The whole naval area could be world vs. world area – with different guilds and groups battling for territories and distrupting other world’s trade convoys (yeah, piracy!).

In short:
New expansion bringing first true naval gameplay to MMO market

  • the south sea becomes accessible – with huge ocean to explore, including small islands, towns, ports and player-built improvable guild bases on them.
  • selection of ships and boats that can be operated depending on naval level of character
  • ships can be improved and customized like in popular vehicular combat multiplayer games (like in World of Tanks, just for example)
  • whole naval area designed as WvW area (with NPC convoys like in existing, land WvW map
  • battles for control of strategic points, playerbases and forts
  • naval rewards by doing the WvW activities
  • explorable new lands with new quests and new contents
  • main story will finally move forward

Basically, the story will move forward, the game will get fresh new content and this is a combination of base-building, new and interesting PvP content, naval combat and something you can care for (well, your SHIP!)

From the technical point of view (I am no developer, it’s just my opinion):

  • this new feature could require the players to buy a “ticket” or “document” for a period of time he will be able to set sail, either with in-game money on real money.
  • when LoD range is set right, the game should be able to draw the area without major problems (sea is less demanding to draw than land full of props)
  • unique content that will put Guild Wars 2 into spotlight once again! Guild Wars 2 took MMO’s to the next level by it’s innovative approach to the genre, why should it stop?!

For whoever is reading this – If you like the idea, please share it with your friends and contacts playing the game – if you truly believe it could happen and it would be awesome.
For creative minds – try posting pictures or concept art how awesome could the ships look like here!

If you made it down here to the bottom, I wish to thank you for your attention and I hope you can see the future of this.

Sounds like a brilliant idea and something that would vastly improve exploration. As such it wont happen, not for 5 years+ at least…. They just don’t seem to want to add more/new areas or anything that features exploring. Also any new game mechanics or gameplay styles seem a no no. Unless it’s some zergfest LS it’s just not gonna happen.

I wish they would get rid of the LS as I am over it now like a lot of other people and instead focus on other things. If they HAD to they could simply add in more “traditional” quests as stories and place them around the map and over time we could have many little “extra” stories we could complete when WE feel like it and ready and not FORCED upon us to do “now or miss out”.

I am for this idea but again, sadly I think they lack the care or interest to add anything unless it tries to make us go “wow” story wise and get us hooked and emotionally attached. Which I just can’t see happening anytime soon, people are just getting over it..

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I think they have set a new milestone in MMO market by coming up with such an innovative game like they did. I expect them to live up to their ideals of innovation and I am sure there’s money to be made behind this aswell.

nice idea, kind of GW2´s Jump to Lightspeed. But I doubt we will ever see that or anything similar – it would mean developing a whole new game from scratch.

I actually think they can do this fairly easily. Exactly how ships and such would move would take a lot of work, but the mechanics of sea battle are there for the making. We already have artillery and such….

It wouldn’t be very immersive within the current game. Think about Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. That game was designed for naval battle, with amazingly crafted oceans with huge swells and realistic storms. If naval battle was introduced to GW2, we would be riding along on a flat calm, and it would be pretty boring if you ask me. If they were to update the oceans in the game to actually have waves, and also add much more realistic weather to the game, then yeah it would be awesome. But that would be a HUGE overhaul.

It would definitely be a possibility once they open up the rest of the Sea of Sorrows area. I guess I’m just biased to Black Flag. No naval combat in an MMO would be able to compete with it. It was done flawlessly.

Indeed, I don’t see it ever happening. The idea sounds simple to implement in our heads but game engines aren’t as simple.

Sorry, I do not really want GW2 to become a ship tycoon, even in a part of it, especially because focusing on something completely new will mean (let’s be realistic) no bug fixes and no “normal” PvE expansions. Not to mention the tediousness of sea journeys, the problems of noobs and trolls piloting large ships, great issues with GW2 targeting system on moving terrains (Arah story and AoE anyone?) etc. etc.

So in short, I prefer my fantasy heroines the usual way (:

20 level 80s and counting.

LOL, sounds like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag or something. I wouldn’t be against something like this but I would much rather other things come first such as:
Better sPvP
Better class balance
New Weapons
New Legendaries
New Class
New Race
And the list goes on ;P

World of Airships?

I’d be all over that.

But naval ships would be cool too. Sort of ‘Pirates of the Burning Sea’ in GW2.

Asura pirates FTW.

I think you’d see some variant of “Airship Battles” before we saw naval stuff added to the game.

Making airship combat is lot more difficult than making naval combat – there’s the third axis and the landscape under, while naval battles would only take a good water rendering. I am not against it, but while naval combat could be done, I’m afraid making functional airship piloting would be too much because the technical limitations.

Sony Online already did an MMO like this years ago, Pirates of the Burnings Sea. Sadly it faded years later but the rights were passed to another company to rebuild. It had a vast crafting system and a majority of the items in game were all player made. Building a ship for a player to use required a team of people since the crafting started at raw materials to be refined and combined from there. Ships were hundred of components and thousands of mats. All the crafitng professions were more like cooking in GW2 styles. The navel battles factored in winds, sail position, damage. Differing types of cannons and cannon shot types came into play as well as crew that could be killed of. Boarding action was possible if you were able to close and graple an enemy ship. It was a lot of fun. Didn’t stick with a lot of players though and each new MMO pulled people out of game as all MMOs go. It was amazing to keep finding people that thought the game movement was bugged at times though until you asked them if they were sure they weren’t sailing diectly into the wind. And then their response was what did the wind have to do with anything. <facepalm>

Long story short, good idea but it would take a vast amount of coding since it has been a whole seperate game itself in the past unless you want a boiled down version thats more watch then play. Good hunting!

I don’t think we need such advanced mechanics like Pirates of the Burning Seas had.

This venture into new and interesting gameplay sector can bring a lot – new way to do WvW, new ways to cooperate with other players – building bases on islands and fighting together at seas,
and a hell lot of fun if it was made in the Guild Wars style – being innovative, but still accessible to everyone!
World of Warcraft brings base building in it’s next expansion after all – why guild wars couldn’t bring Naval combat alongside base building?

I am not talking about big overhaul of the game – just new feature.

I played Pirates of the Burning Sea for a couple of Days.

It was kinda like WvW with month long seasons after which the winning faction would get some sort of bonus but everything else would reset. You could haul goods and trade them from place to place, or you could raid either PC or NPC ships for loot. Plus you could capture forts and all of that good stuff. The game had both a Ship v Ship and a individual combat engine.

There were English, Spanish, Dutch, French Factions, and I think there was a Pirate faction that allowed you to go after anybody and anybody to go after you.

Good ideas, but engine was clunky as hell, and launched with a sub fee so never got the players. Plus it came from Sony at a time when everybody was mad at Sony for Star Wars Galaxies.

#24 leaderboard rank North America.

Let’s not venture too off-topic. We’re talking about Guild Wars 2 and the possibility and lucrativity of bringing something like naval combat to the game.

Do you think it’s possible, and if so – how would you like it?

How about we take one part of WvW fortress wall. Reshape it into lower half of a hull. Then add 6 more of those as upper part segments. One more for sails. Now, lower part of the hull can not be repaired, but doesn’t take damage unless two of upper hull segments are destroyed. If lover part is destroyed, ship is destroyed and players are left into water to swim. Upper hull segments take damage from cannons or whatever but are repairable and don’t require supply. But it takes time to fix it and presence of player (working with hammer on it). Now, add wvw wall cannons onto deck. Three on each side. Then add a helm with similar mechanics as siege weapon, go force left on button 1, mild left on 2, straighten on 3, mild right on 4, force right on 5. Try to break on 6 and exit on 0. Controls the lover part of the hull, everything else is attached to it and moves accordingly. Speed of ship is determined with sails. Approach to sail. Press F, then 1 to lover the sail, and 2 to fold. Three sails down, more speed. If no wind, add paddles that require 4 members to move ship. If sail is destroyed it can be fixed but requires wood and linen (evil grin). Cant sail if sails are destroyed, ofc. Paddle to the shores.

And there you go, made in a minute gw2 ship! Well, now. If i can think of this, surely they can think of something even better and easier to implement.

If you seriously think it is this simple, do you also think people can fly once they sew condor wings on their backs?

I think this would take too much resources from an engine that was not designed with this kind of gameplay in mind. I am even doubting whether it would be possible to do this on guild wars 2 with all the effort (and personnel and money) in the world, unless they make an entirely new game for it.

I’d much prefer they polish up and add to the core game. While this comes from a person who is not interested in naval battles, you’d do better to play a game that offers this type of play than hope that it gets implemented in this game. Because you will be stuck hoping for a very long time.

It really is not that simple how Rod described it, it is neither that difficult. Simply put – basically the only mechanic that’s missing is “moving” the objects in manner that they stay together and can be interacted with.

Connecting the pieces like cannons, hull and sails so they behave as a single object that’s movable in-game and also interactable might prove a challenge, but I think GW2 engine is advanced enough to be capable of that – with some modifications to it – of course.

I’d much prefer they polish up and add to the core game. While this comes from a person who is not interested in naval battles, you’d do better to play a game that offers this type of play than hope that it gets implemented in this game. Because you will be stuck hoping for a very long time.

First – polishing up and adding to the core game won’t earn ArenaNet money nor influx of new players.
The game is polished enough (sure, people always exagerrate about issues they often describe as gamebreaking) and adding more items, quests and such small-scale things won’t do much. Try looking at Guild Wars 2 from wider perspective.

And about the advice you gave us – well, there aren’t ANY solid games of this type in the first place.

They couldn’t get it working on AC black flag in multiplayer so i think it would be hard to do it.It’s a lot about syncronizing ships and players etc.It can be done but i think they don’t have enough funds to focus on that and other stuff,it would be a very high risk for a feature that seems so optional.I don’t say it would not be nice to have naval battle but is too much to work on and it might slow down bug fixes , updates etc. and that would make many players unhappy for a thing that is a “bonus” feature since naval battles is not a feature we need,is a feature we want.

It IS that simple. Maybe not in a way i described, but still simple.

There is a game. MMO game. That has been released in 2009. It has sea ships that float in space (astral) instead in water. And everything on ships is working nicely. PVE on ships is working fine. PVP with ships and on ships if working fine. As it has been done five years ago, it surely can be done today.

Also, modifying ships look offers great opportunities for gem store.

There are a lot of MMO’s out there also, yet we chose to play GW2. When we want to play other games, we do. But, there is a strong lore behind our wish. Ship fights are something well known to the universe of GW. We just want to see it ingame also.

There are not. Yes, you could count some unfinished B grade MMO’s from some unknown developers, but there are not any AAA multiplayer naval games.
