A Tome of Knowledge used on a level 80 hero gives you one Spirit Shard.

Which means that a Tome is worth a Shard… so should the reverse not also be true?

I get that a lot of people like the shards, because they can be used for making legendaries… but to be honest, I tend not to bother with those. They’re good and all, I’m sure, but IMO they seem like way too much effort… so I’d love another way to spend spirit shards.

Personally, I think it would be great if we could buy the tomes from Miyani using shards in the same way that we can with Writs of Experience.

Heck, I’d even be willing to exchange them for Writs, which only one level per 20… seriously, I don’t use the forge at all, and all they’re good for is forging things… and yet I keep getting handed them as a reward for doing the dailies. =(

An option to exchange them for gold would also be a good alternative, if you don’t like the idea of giving away Tomes. Or Laurels. Anything that is capable of being useful without requiring the Mystic Forge, really.

Some players have 1,000, perhaps upwards of 10,000 spirit shards currently. So if something like this were implemented, the exchange rate would have to be significant, otherwise people would be rolling in tomes (well, some already are).

Getting close to 3000 shards. I wouldn’t mind a way to buy tomes with them.

Be careful what you ask for

No thanks. Tomes → shards allows players with absolutely no use for tomes to get a currency out of them. Shards → tomes would allow players to run around in the Silverwastes, etc on a level 80 and level alts through it. We’d have even more people who can’t play their level 80, fully geared classes.

Obviously, all of the above would be convenient for some players. It would also go against the intended use of this specific currency. The point of separate currencies is to tie rewards and/or benefits to specific types of content or character progression. Better than making it easier to exchange currencies would be to eliminate them; that would maximize convenience (and leave a much more boring game, in my opinion).

If you don’t want to use spirit shards for material promotion, then maybe you can use them to unlock all the antique weapons skins. If that’s not interesting to you, then just sit on them until there’s another use down the road.

A tome is worth a shard but a shard is not worth a tome because many shards came from and still come from champ bags and now also as random drops. That means shards are much easier to acquire.

how does that change anything from people that level up in WvW and EOTM, or staying in low level zones?

some people learn to play their class faster than others regardless of how long it takes to level.

That’s hardly a consideration. If you do the PvP dailies you’ll get one a day. With login tomes, that’s 38 tomes/28 days. People who are going to rush level can wait a couple of months then use tomes, EOTM and crafting to get to level 80 fast.
