hi everyone,
i really enjoy using the glider but it is really annoying that it is on the same key as jump. the main probably i have is that when you’re doing jumping puzzles and you hold the spacebar down for a just second longer is activated the glider which has caused me to miss want i was jumping for which is so frustrating when you are near the end and have to start again. i know a lot of people will probably say don’t hold space for that seconds longer but it is hard not to so i will really like to be able to assign it to a different key.
thanks

Ever since they added gliding to core Tyria jumping have been a pain due to the constant glider opening when trying to do longer jumps as i’m so use to holding my space bar down.

So dear Arenanet can we please have a toggle on and off for the gilder deployment

Please please please i am begging you.
I love the glider but is making my gametime miserable.

I would love to hear from people if this is something you would like too.

Yes, long horizontal jumps onto tight landing spots are terrible when the chute opens, and it almost always does.

We need just a key toggle, like walk/run, or autorun toggle.

I posted about this right after the patch, then figured out it was because I tend to hold the spacebar down for perhaps a half-second or a second after a spacebar jump. I kinda brushed it off and figured ok, I can adjust. However, I continue to find this to be a pain to manage since the auto-deploy happens so quickly.

This issue is that the deploying occurs almost immediately after a jump over open air. Even while actively trying to avoid holding the spacebar down after a jump I find it still opens too often, and since I can’t instantly un-deploy it after it happens (there’s a small delay before you can do that), I often can’t avoid flying right past my target.

So, yes, whether other people have gotten used to a different way of jumping and having the glider auto-deploy isn’t a problem it IS a problem that many people do and will probably in the future continue to have due to the very slim margin required to avoid it.

A toggle to disable gliding manually in cases where a player knows they don’t want the glider to deploy no matter what is a win for many, and a non-issue for everyone else.

Yes, that’s my experience too. I lump it into the lag problem of the game. Laggy areas, more issues.

The jumping problem has been there since gliding was introduced. People complained, rightfully, the it sometimes the glider did not deploy in time to save a glide and they died or fell too much to make the landing point when it finally kicked in.. ANET changed deployment to accommodate the various lags in the system (lumping them all into network lag) and the chute deployed in a better fashion, but the jump problem was now exacerbated. We all have different lags: our own machine, the internet ping, and the server lag at ANET, so we all get different results. Then various places in the game are more laggy than others.

Jumping upward doesn’t seem to have issues. Any long flat jump, where the character is dropping the 2nd half of the jump, and at the limit of the characters jump range, seems to be a lag dependent item as to whether the chute deploys of doesn’t. It’kitten or miss. Compound it with a need to stick the landing on a small column and it’s curtains.

I’d be happy with a toggle off/on, just as walk/run toggle.

Well I DID have 150 ping while trying to charge the key versus my usual which is closer to 85 but I thought the latest patch made glider deployment client side so ping shouldn’t matter.

I have the Heart of Thorns extension and am a long and very experienced player of Guild Wars 2. I’ve got map completion too, so now we’re established that I’ve got a pretty good handle on things I would like to propose a modification or fix for an issue which is bugging me (and others).

It relates to the key which is bound to the jump control which is fine if you want to jump, but when you have the HoT expansion also causes your character to fly and that is where the problems arose, for we were (as you know) recently given flight in the non-jungle maps and I’m loving it, but … it’s causing me merry hell when I attempt to navigate jumping puzzles now as the wings often deploy and make me miss my intended landing spot! Would it be possible, ArenaNET to please create an option within the controls so that we have the JUMP key and a key binding (of our own choosing) for deploying the glider as this would at least solve this most distressing issue!

I enjoy Gliding in Central Tyria very much, but please:

The Gliding jumping puzzles seems problematic to me for it makes the jumping either too easy or unnecessary difficult.

a) It can mess up jumps when the Glider activates accidentally, since it is assigned to the same key as jumping.
b) Well, I might be stupid but I would like to have the opportunity to actually try the jumping puzzles I have not tried so far without any gliding. And since the Gliding and the Jumping seems to be assigned to the same key it is hard to avoid accidentally gliding.

So please, if it is technically possible it would be very great to have the opportunity
to assign the Gliding to a different key or the option to deactivate it in the options menu. I know that there are no-fly-zones but they are just a very few compared to all the jumping puzzles.

No it is just disabled in very few selected No-Fly-Zones (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/No_fly_zone), as far as I understood. The vast majority of JPs is not included.
And if I understood correctly you cannot separate the jumping and gliding, for their are assigned to the same key. If I change the jumping key, I change the gliding as well. I think. (If I am wrong, I’d love to be corrected ).

No gliding is not disabled in all JPs. I just did Under New Management after Karka Queen this morning and my glider kicked in causing me to hit a cross strut and fall instead of dropping on the spot I should have.

Is there a toggle to turn off the glide feature? … I absolutely love gliding in Tyria, but seriously attempting to do a Jumping Puzzle with the glider deployment feature is far more exasperating (meaning: intensely irritating, infuriating) than it was before the gliders … attempting to do a half jump when all of the sudden your glider deploys and you find yourself floating way passed your intended landing zone into the wild blue yonder, kittens me …

Just allow a toggle tab on the combat movement option where someone could check the glider on/off … or a toggle tab on the glider skins box in hero equipment where we can decide to turn it on/off there.

Does the game really to be play it our way or else?

“Play the game your way” has nothing to do with whether or not a particular mechanic has a toggle or not. It’s about leveling by playing the game so don’t drag in nonsense comparisons like that into your post.

For jumping puzzles, don’t hold down the jump key. All you need to do is tap it. Holding it down doesn’t increase the distance of your jump. If you only tap it your glider won’t deploy during a jump.

Even being aware that you just need to tap the jump key doesn’t mean you’re not going to accidentally set off gliding once or twice, which in a Jumping Puzzle is a massive problem.

I have a tendency to go through JP’s rather quickly which means I tap jump rapidly for smaller areas and then if there’s a large jump I’m used to holding it down (because it stops me from accidentally pressing it again and jumping to my death). That’s a behaviour I have to unlearn because of the glider.

No it’s not a huge issue, but it would be really nice to be able to map the deploy key to something else, or disable it temporarily. Just as it would be nice to be able to disable the commander speed boost in towns (which made it difficult for me to do Troll’s Revenge in LA because there are lots of smaller jumps).

Just because it doesn’t effect you Just a Flesh Wound, doesn’t mean it’s not an issue or doesn’t need addressing.

When ANet said play your way, they meant how you can level by doing all sorts of things. PvP. WvW. Hearts. Events. Crafting. Farming. It doesn’t have anything to to with whether or not a feature has a toggle.

Ask for a toggle if you want. That’s a good suggestion (and if you had checked the forum there’s already been a thread or two about this already). Tying the request to a statement that the Devs said that has nothing to do with what they meant is not, because other people then start twisting what the Devs said in other posts to mean something different than what was actually meant.

My objection to the play your way comment has to do with accuracy and changing what the Devs said to fit whatever someone has a complaint about.

Is it strange that I’ve never had this problem, but I have had the opposite – I’m not always able to open the glider quickly enough so I end up loosing height and screwing up my glide?

I think it might be partially because I’m so used to only tapping jump that I never hold it down long enough to open the glider that way, and I can’t double tap it quickly enough.

I just tried Morgan’s Spiral after the OP mentioned it as especially difficult and the only time my glider opened was when I wanted it to. I really screwed up on Dreamdark Enclave though – I tried to glide from the entrance to the far side and completely forgot that of course they’d made it a no-fly zone. Crashed to the floor and died!

Arenanet only ever used ‘play your way’ or ‘play the way you want’ to refer to the fact that you could level up entirely in PvE or WvW and didn’t need to level up for PvP, so you didn’t need to play a game mode you didn’t enjoy. (As opposed to lots of MMOs which make you level up in PvE before you can enter PvP.)

It was only players taking it out of context who applied it to other things.

It’s not wrong. It’s the way it works in other games. Like you, it’s ingrained in my reflexes too from a childhood of games where the length of the jump was determined by how long you held down the jump key.

Holding it down didn’t hurt before HOT. Now it does. I’m learning to tap but frankly why not just allow binding the glide key to something else? Then we can hold the key as long as we like and the tappers can tap, tap, tap, tap, tap…

The other benefit of having a separate key for opening the glider is that it can be triggered faster. I like to do a batman dive – that is, fall from a great height and only open the glider at the last moment to land safely. It’s tricky if you have to hold your jump key to do it. But with a single keypress glider opening you could pull off a really impressive landing.

Is asking for a toggle in the Options: Combat / Movement to difficult to understand? …
Well it could be, if after you successfully completed an open JP and you forget to reset or re-toggle your option heading into the Jungle .. heh .. watching your character bite the dust in a leap and a bound .. but it would be a subtle reminder ..

Even place a check box on the Hero: Equipment / Glider box to be able to give some control as to whether you wish to glide or not should be to difficult .. albeit you would have to be aware that its off, though at least you would have that option.
Going into Shark Maw the Developer’s saw fit to disable your glider deployment, which is actually kind of nice .. use your skills you have always used to get passed Chompy’s vicious maw .. but, then if there why not other Jumping Puzzles or ALL Jumping Puzzles .. the Collapsed Conservatory or the aforementioned Troll’s Revenge ..

Admittedly, the considerable amount of patience and perseverance it takes to get trinkets and salvage, in honesty doesn’t seem to be a worthwhile endeavor .. feeling rage quit boiling ..

First you have to be a little more than masochistic (meaning: enjoying an activity that appears to be painful or tedious) to attempt a Jumping Puzzle or Vista with the thought of your Glider Deploying looming in your consciousness … will it deploy? won’t it deploy?

Having an Option “IS” allowing player’s to play it the way they want …

There does need to be some kind of fix for the jumping issue, but a new key is not one of them. I am already over full on keys that I need to learn/use and this brings up this stupid special action key which is only used in raids. WHY DID THEY DO THIS? Having 5 seconds to detect I HAVE A BOMB, figure out where I need to throw it, get over there, and then remember to press this new useless key is near impossible. Please don’t add another key for gliding. I already have 8 buttons I am using on my mouse and over a dozen keys on my left hand (plus a few more based on profession).

I’m also one of the habitual press-and-hold jumpers. It probably comes from zillions of other games where longer/higher jumps required it. You’ll probably also find me putting more pressure on skill keys in tough fights hehe.

It’s an easy one to solve. The jump key should jump if you are on the ground and glide if you are in the air so it needs a double tap to glide in most circumstances.

Double tap is not a good solution either as many keyboards are kind of sloppy on the space bar and the whole lag issue could cause lots of ‘failure to deploy’ deaths.

When first learning gliding I use to jump off the edge (with space) and then hit space again to deploy, but now I hold space BEFORE running off the edge to insure I get the glider to deploy. Maybe the logic can detect your ‘state’ somehow and not deploy if your about to land on something solid or if there are ‘obstacles’ in the area that could tangle your glider or something.

Before I adopted the hold space bar while running off a ledge approach I can’t tell you how many times I attempted to double tap, and failed, and losing altitude often cost you missing some long glide target. What was worse is that sometimes it didn’t fail and even though I was gliding I hit space again in panic and closed the glider by mistake. There are two places in the raids where your in a panicked hurry and just holding space will get you through but a second or more of falling, wipes the raid or the event.

I also spent a bundle on a new mechanical keyboard because my space bar was sloppy on my existing keyboard which was well worn, but not cheap, just to tighten up my jumping as you have to get an accurate tap without holding it to long.

Simple fix: i) add a keybind for the glider so people can choose a different key if they want. (I would). And ii) add options to choose whether you want the glider to open on hold-jump-key or double-tap-jump-key. Everybody plays their way and is happy.

There should be an option to turn the gliding function off and on. It is very annoying to be in the middle of jumping from place to place on a map and suddenly you glide past your landing spot. Since the jump and deploy glider are the same key, you do not have any control over when the glider deployes. Sometimes it is immediately and sometimes it requires a second tap on the space key. If there was an option to turn off the glider function, this would simplify matters and prevent gliding at inopportune moments.

I could understand though if you have a touchy spacebar and I hear you. Adding a seperate keybind would be more optimal than on/off imo although I personally would keep it as default.
