Here’s the problem with farming like this and being public trolls and nuisances about it: ANet will just do what they did with Jormag. They will make it so these champs drop NO loot, and instead of doing things as intended and winning overall, players will get nothing rewarding at all for running this event.

This behavior is self defeating and shows little-to-no foresight on the part of the players. Everyone loses eventually, including the trolls/farmers.

Will people get banned? Probably not. This does fall clearly outside of the blanket “unintended behavior” rules, but they’ll probably just patch it and move on. On a personal note I wish they DID ban people for it because the verbal abuse and bad behavior coming out of these people deserves nothing less. Unfortunately ANet doesn’t take “verbal abuse” claims seriously with the reporting system.

We hoard gold now because we know it’ll be nerfed. John Smith said it was a concern awhile ago.

And when gold deflates, we have more purchasing power. So as long as you’re patient, you win in the end.

Honestly TC is TOO full. All champ farming circuits (namely Orr/Frostgorge) are so packed with players that if you WP and take more than 3 seconds to load, whatever mob people are killing will most likely be dead before you touch it. I usually guest to less populated servers.

Yes they do, people get banned for verbal abuse all the time. (by looking at the people coming on the boards complaining about being banned for language)

And I’m not 100% certain, but I pretty sure this guy from my server ate a suspension during FG champ runs, he was dropping f bombs at people everywhere in map chat, wouldn’t be surprised if he did, or maybe he is now in CS farming.

There’s not much gold to be had after the champ skin market becomes saturated. The problem will really work itself out. And as for the small amount of T6 mats, those kind of need to be more plentiful anyways.

It doesn’t matter what it is. What matters is that you intentionally did something (again doesn’t matter what it is) for the sake of griefing others. It doesn’t matter what they are doing or what you are doing. It matters WHY you are doing what you are doing and in this case it was to grief others which you admitted and submitted proof of yourself.

Failing to complete an event is not an exploit. You can continue to try and label it such but it is not and just make you look foolish no matter what kind of spin you are trying to put on it just to make yourselves look right.

While I don’t want to argue with your opinion. I will say this, a similar argument was given for the Champion Risen Giant farm on the steps up to Arah that went on for awhile a month or two ago. Look what became of that. I won’t proclaim to know that Anet changed it because they saw it as an exploit, but none-the-less it was changed. That says something.

Just because something is changed doesn’t mean it’s an exploit. Anet just wanted to alter it so that the gold/loot acquisition rate is ‘normalized’ with the rest of the game. Anet has a vested interest in making sure gold is not easy to acquire.

ON THE OTHER HAND…. just b/c something is not the text book example of an Exploit (IE: getting inside the world geometry), doesn’t exclude it from still being GRIEFING or ban-worthy.

If you’re completely halting and actively BLOCKING the progress of other player’s events, then you are actually yes indeed griefing their completion of the event. This event especially since it’s actually very difficult to prevent it from succeeding once it gets to the Cauldrons…. hence why we’re seeing record levels of Verbal Abuse and other unsavory tactics by the Abusers of this event, which most definitely IS ban worthy. (read half of Gaile’s posts in the Dev tracker if you don’t believe that they take it very seriously).

Furthermore, look at the Karma-Resale “exploit” that was used the first Week the game launched which wasn’t even blocking anyone else’s progress but made what John Smith defines as a “Loop” in profits where you could almost endlessly procure a cheap item and then sell it for many many many times its effort. It still resulted in TONS of BANS ….Under specific conditions here with the Cauldrons, a similar amount of effort is being applied in order to generate massive amounts of … well things I shouldn’t mention b/c it might only lead to even more people jumping on the farmwagon.

You’re right. It almost seems like it’s a part of human nature that people get off on griefing others. People do play Eve after all.

This guy just did it for the sake of completing the event, which for some reason in his eyes is benevolent? Maybe it has to do with the whole TC RP stuff(I don’t understand RP) and that was the reason he wanted to complete it, but it’s certainly more likely he was just getting jollies out of griefing.

Why do you guys insist on being trolls? What else would you have me do instead of ember farming? I got v world’s completion, 8 lvl 80s, and just want to raise money to help guildies. You are truly pathetic for intentionally ruining others style of playing. Don’t give me the bullkitten about OMG its an exploit. I bet most of you haters also ball up with 50+ in wvw, isn’t that an exploit? So if you don’t have anything to help the community by helping people get gold or get geared up, then u are nothing but kittening kittens. Im also willing to bet if you have a choice between tagging a mob or helping a downed player you will tell the fellow player that he is sol. Exploit
1. to utilize, esp. for profit; turn to practical account: to exploit a business opportunity.
2. to take advantage of; promote.
3. to use selfishly for one’s own ends.
(source Webster’s dictionary)

I would say that this current farm meta falls into at least one of those three definitions, often times all three. I know the argument can be made that it is available for everyone to do therefore it is not selfish, and that holds true until the farm zerg berates people for attempting to actually play the game in a “normal” manner. Unless you want to make the case that you intentionally play to lose simply for the sake of losing, you can’t really argue for this not being exploitive.

According to the quoted definition any event completion, heart completion, map completion, killing a mob, anything that provides a reward for doing something, would constitute exploiting.

Purposefully failing does not seem likely to have been the intended means of earning rewards from an event, but it is not an exploit. When it is changed (and I hope and expect that to be sooner rather than later) this will not be an indication that the activity was an exploit, only that ANet wants the game to play differently.

I am not trying to pass judgment to be honest, it is for each person to decide their “morality” (I put it in quotes because well it’s a video game and all and not real life). But by a definition, the event and all the examples you provided can be considered exploits. Now here is the important part of that statement, there is different connotations associated with each of those definitions, but what most people actually argue about is only the negative connotation. I just wanted to provide a definition of what the word means, people can decide for themselves whether or not it is negatively impactful. Personally for me, I don’t find the game style choice to be entertaining in the slightest, so I refrain…but my personal needs are fulfilled since I have already acquired most of everything I could ever possibly want just through playing the game. I don’t think Anet intended things to be this way, but I also don’t think anyone should be banned for it either. In the end Anet will decide, they will either change it or they won’t. However for someone who does legitimately want to complete events in the manner they were intended, to be berated for playing that way is simply not cool (I know some people do intentionally try to disrupt things just to be kittens) the problem is the mass mob mentality does not try to distinguish the difference. People make the arguments that they have no other spot to farm, no other way to make as much money so on and so forth, but if that is people’s sole goal is to make money in a game they might as well just play a stock market sim. Let’s be honest you can get anything in the game you need to be successful simply with time, the wants of having it faster well, it does not excuse certain behaviors. Keep up with the Jonse’s but try not to trample on too many people along the way.

I stopped by the event to see what the fuss was about. The champions were chain spawning. It’s clearly not working as intended. Sometimes they were spawning more than one at a time. This can’t be intended.

You don’t finish the event, you can farm the champions pretty much back to back. I killed six champions in less than six minutes that I received rewards for and 2 others that I guess I didn’t damage enough to get rewarded for.

This, to me, is an exploit. Because it makes no sense that champions spawn that fast or were meant to be farmed.

Even in the pavilion you occasionally have to wait for champions and they don’t take 25 seconds to kill.

To be clear, I was commenting on the decision to use a dictionary entry that would make almost anything in any game an exploit when we are discussing a situation where the context is not in accordance with the dictionary’s use.

As to the verbal abuse…well that should be reported and be addressed whether or not it is inspired by an exploit. Someone attempting to complete an event is not griefing, and someone trying to farm mobs repeatedly is not exploiting. Neither deserves to be the target of abusive behavior.

I did a small amount of research and found that the ember event keeps the Gates of Arah event from completing to fruition? I could be wrong. If anything, I’ve HELPED the integrity of the zone. Hehe.

Exactly why these actions is heroic. Look, I wouldn’t mind the farmers constantly failing the attack on R&D, for instance, if it continually spawned champion tar elementals. That’s an out-of-the-way spot no one cares about. But Shank Anchorage is a roadblock event in the middle of a pretty important event chain: clearing the Gates of Arah. Intentionally failing it repeatedly is depriving the opportunity from other players who legitimately want to succeed and continue with the chain.

As it is, it just ends in a standoff anyway: the cauldrons may be destroyed, but that spawns a named champion, who scales too high for the cauldron destroyers to take down while the farmers hang back. The event still fails and resets shortly thereafter, but was far less profitable for the farmers. So no one gets what they want.

Actually its just being (insert colorful language), not being a hero. If those people were truly interested in completing the orrian chains/entering arah, then they wouldn’t be waste their time trolling the farming population, they would just guest to another server which isn’t as farm heavy and go about their business their. Trolling the events for hours upon hours just proves they have absolutely no intentions of completing the chain events/entering arah and that they are just being… again with the colorful language.

This deserves a suspension/temp ban whatever you like to call it. While farmers are upsetting a few..it is not their objective. Their objective is to farm.

You however are griefing players for the sake of griefing players. If you were doing the event to do the event, that would be fine, but you are doing it for the sole sake of griefing. AND that is ban worthy imo.

You can try reporting him, I assure you he wouldn’t get banned. While failing an event over and over again is not an exploit, it does ruin the gameplay of others by leaving the waypoint uncontested, therefore you’re not blaming the person for griefing the griefers.
If you want to farm – join a champ train, that’s actually playing the game as intended, because the events get completed and champs get killed.

Well if I get banned for it, then the Dev that was out there helping me should too.

There was a dev there? That means that it will be stopped very soon. That’s what happened with Lyssa event as well. A dev came, participated for a while, walked away, a week later they fixed it.

This is what happens when concessions are made in an attempt to appease the “MOAR LOOT!” crowd. I’ve asked it before, and I’ll ask it again. Are these really the kinds of people you want to build your game – and by extension, your community – around?

well, at least it’s lively now. I guess they’re still trying to find the right formula between farm and how to populate area. Right now, it’s buses everywhere ^^;

what kind of solution would you provide to attract players in empty areas?

As for the Ember quest, it’s definitely an overlook and will certainly be fixed.

Ember farming is exactly what GW2 needed, it promotes getting a group together to do events. What Arenanet need to do now is tweak it so that it’s more beneficial to complete the event.

Co-ordinating an event chain is way better than waypointing from champ to champ, if you removed the incentives for doing events like ember then all you are left with are waypoint farming.

I’d much rather do event chains than farming a champ rotation.

You mean getting a group together because it allows you to tag enemies more easily? You can’t call that farm teamplay, people rarely exchange words.

IMHO This event and events like these need to stay. I agree they can tone down the amount of champs on failure, but it’s really about time there was some rewarding content, or at the very least feels rewarding. People should be able to farm, people shouldn’t however to be able to trivialize content (i.e. skipping dungeon paths). The economy will settle, but these constant tweaks is ultimately hurting the game more than it is helping. They really need to focus on increasing rewarding content across the board and not focus on one very specific type of event/mob.

I agree. A balance needs to be made, but being excited when you FAIL at something because it’s rewarding is down right ridiculous.

I just want to point out, we agree. The game is more fun and exciting when defeating things and working together with other players is rewarding. Champions have always been an issue in this area, and it’s why we addressed it, we’re continuing to pursue other areas in the game in upcoming releases as well.

That being said: the behavior we want is people join up together to play events, but they want to succeed those events and win them, we never want to be in a state where intentionally failing an event is more rewarding or better for players. We’re not going to take a giant hammer to champion loot, we love it and love seeing people joining together to do events. We do want to make succeeding events what the game is about. We also do want to make some events in the future even more challenging, and in return more rewarding for succeeding.

You will see changes over time to help directly encourage players to always want to try and succeed events, we don’t ever want to create conflict between players who want to progress an event chain, and those who want to fail it. It’s bad for the game and not what Gw2 is all about.

Does this mean the champ trains not associated with events are going to be nerfed? I personally would love to see a shift more towards events instead of the WP champ farms.

Thank you Colin for your reply!! We love this game and are excited about the changes. I’m glad to hear you’re not going to take a big nerfhammer to champion loot, it has really made taking out champions in the game much more rewarding and was something I had been wanting for ages!

I’d love if we could get more mob-specific weapons like there were in GW1 where a certain boss would drop their specific weapon. So far, love everything you’ve done…..may not always agree with decisions but I know you all are doing what you think is best for the game! <3
