Q:

Question; Would it be legal or acceptable to use a text macro that types “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” on the push of a button? The purpose of the macro would be to indicate a downed state during a wvw fight (so that a warrior can banner me in a battle).

A reference to a previous topic or a definitive response would help.

Well usual official (red posts) responses have pointed to the ToS/Rules, which states it has to be one action per key press, which you’re would technically break.

Well heres one response:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Turbo-macro-bannable

Heres a better one I think (the second paragraph of her response):
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Very-Specific-Doubleclick-Macro-Question

Please do not try to vet third-party programs on the forums, through us or by pinging players about their “acceptability.” Everything we have to say about such programs is included in the sticky above, and we’re not able to advise you further.

Do pay careful attention to two things: Anything that shortens a process and is not an integral part of the game may be viewed as “giving advantage” and many, many such programs do contain malware.

This thread is saying that macro’s are allowed as long as it is one action for one keystroke.

So for example, a macro that automatically equips a riffle on an engineer instead off dual pistols is perfectly allowed if it is out of combat. Cause it is one key for one keystroke.

However in case off chat you can ask yourself what the action is. Is the action typing each letter? or is the action to say a line in chat? I would use the following reasoning. if the chat (the thing you type) would be /dance. the actual action would be that your character starts dancing. So assuming that an emote is equal to a line off text, it would be considered one action, and so a macro is ok to use. Specially cause its not giving any unfair advantage

I’d disagree with that last statement. It depends on the situation. If its some kind of command in pvp/wvw it is giving an unfair advantage, since they don’t have to type the whole thing out, which gives them time to do other stuff/attack.

Advantage: yes
Unfair advantage: No

The person is using a macro to single for help. Being good in communications with your team and getting communications through quick is an advantage, but definitely not unfair.

If the button press does:

Bring up the chat box, type all of the characters you want, and send the message, all in one press… I think that’s not allowed per Gaile Gray

“He shall make whole that which was torn asunder.
Restore that which was lost. And all shall be as one.”

I have a feeling lots of players with G13 type devices r breaking this rule.

The legality of such a macro most likely depends on the judgement of the person that is handling your account suspension. There’s simply no way to have a clear policy on this. They might ignore some cases like they do other issues, others just might get you suspended.

The safest option is to avoid using it. Unless you want to risk getting suspended, appealing the suspension, possibly getting suspended again etc.

I agree. More than one action per key press is grounds for suspension or ban. Would probably get your account suppressed from typing into chat as well.

Even the “one key for one action” thing isn’t a good guideline. You don’t want to play a game where macros are okay, or you’ll find you suck unless you’ve got the latest “code”. A one key-one action macro that wouldn’t be okay would be one that tries to perform several attacks in order (turn off action queue) knowing only one will succeed based on range or cooldown, etc.

Ex: Melee strong attack (fails on cooldown), melee normal attack (fails on range, this doesn’t work in this game, but go with it), ranged closer (success!)

Don’t know if its possible in this game, but it was an annoying built – in feature in rift.

I could see players getting banned for macros realated to combat cause realistically u can make a bot with a macro. One macro I could see the devs no caring about are players who have the instruments and they use a macro to play a song with 1 key stroke.

IMHO, Mercury Ranique is correct.
Macro’s aren’t forbidden in the game. Automation is!

Example1 :
If you have a macro that pastes “Move to Garrison, ASAP” and you:
.1) You press the button to open the text chat ingame (“ENTER” by default)
.2) You press the macro key to paste the text
.3) You press Enter to send the written text.

This is allowed as it is the same as a Copy/Paste!

Example2:
You have a macro to:
.1) Open text box
.2) Paste text
.3) Send the text

This is forbidden as it’s considered automation!

How would one be able to prove that it is an automation or a macro that is being used?

Anet has some tools that detect potentiallly harmfull activity’s running. How these tools work is unknown for obvious reasons

I would think the OP’s macro would be allowed. reason being that Anet said ‘action’, not ‘command’.
the difference being: press 3 for a ground-targeted skill, then click with mouse where you want to put it. that whole process is one action. if you made a macro that placed skill 3 at the location of the mouse at the press of one button, I would think that would be within the rules.
similarly, the 1 action the OP wants is to post something in chat.
now, it would break that rule to post several things in chat, or whisper several select people, for example.

I don’t see why you would get banned as long as you dont use the macro in combat. Also I too would like to have a flute playing macro. lol
