I haven’t posted much here, but have read a bit and it just seems wrong. I play this semi-casually (and my better half plays too). We get our daily most days, get a monthly most of the time, do some of the living world events, although we’ve never completed one. We do fractals, dungeons, world bosses and recently started WvW after we got some ascended gear (rest is exotics). We have a good grip of our builds with the help of some of the awesome people in the community and all their debates back and forth on what’s best. It’s helped us a lot build something we find fun and competitive. We really like WvW but find sPvP very dull. Have never ever crafted in a MMO – even this GW2 has made me enjoy – skills of 500, 500, 400, 400, 400, 400 on my toons says it all.

I have played most MMO’s since EQ and the last time I had this kind of fun was back in DAoC – although GW2 would win for me even if DAoC was technically up to date. This is the best MMO I have ever played and also the best game in general I have ever played. In daoc I got one toon to max level but it took me a while. Since then GW2 is the first game where I have reached max level before being bored silly. I have always wanted to enjoy MMO’s as the concept is amazing. In GW2 I have 2 lvl 80, two lvl 70+ and a few alts between 20 and 30. GW2 is the first MMO where I actually enjoy the game itself and not just play for the next little virtual reward until I can’t be kitten d.

GW2 has done everything right with their design. The flat level progression, limited item grind to have a viable toon – and all the rest.

I’ve seen the new MMO’s on the horizon and while the new sandbox philosophy is much to my liking i’ve seen so many promises and so poor deliveries so very often since EQ – but GW2 delivered and gave me what I wanted. I am certain when I try out some of those new mmo’s I’ll return to GW2 simply because I’ll want the new game to be just like it.

I haven’t had this kind of fun for such a span of time ever before in a video game(have played since beta).

Thank you Arena Net for this great game. We’ve had so much fun with it and even the oldest daughter (7,52 years old) messes around in queensdale once in a while just exploring and looking at stuff.

I won’t say I am 100% thrilled with every decision ANet has made for the game, but I will say how glad I am to see people posting something other than rants on the forums.

I hold the belief that people who love and enjoy the game are to busy playing it to waste time complaining on the forums.

Perhaps we should take some time to let ANet know that there are people who really enjoy the game, since if you go by the forums, that would be hard to tell, sometimes.

OP, I hope you realise that, my posts at least (since I cannot speak for anyone else) are as bitter sounding as they are, because there is SO much potential in this game.

Honestly, the changes I agitate for are ones that would move this toward being, for me, the best game ever made.

In no way should this detract from the truth that Arenanet has made a truly great game – it’s just that there’s so much potential, and the direction they seem to be taking instead depresses me.

Anyway, that’s my $0.02 – were this a BAD game, I wouldn’t be waiting for improvements, I’d be gone.

I would say in terms of milestones, or games that have left a lasting print on the MMO genre…the following come to mind:

DAOC
EQ / EQ2
World of Warcraft

Id like to say GW2, but it just isnt there yet. I am comfortable saying this because in any game that I have played, for the most part people were pleased with changes. Im not talking about some nerf to your class, but large game design additions or subtractions.

I think the two things that stirred the hornets nest for this game has been the introduction of ascended gear, while many(if not everyone) expected exotic to be the last tier… and Living Story. They are the two hot topics that draw the most positives and negatives.

@Gallows I have to tell you that it’s a nice refreshing change to see someone /not/ rage-whining here in the forums.
Far too much of that, in my opinion.
Not that I think people shouldn’t give their opinions. But… well, look at signature below and you’ll see my thoughts on opinions…

Also, I’m going to quote something from about 6 months ago that I believe still very much applies…

You just need to remember it only takes about 30 people to make a mess of a forums and that there is certain vested parties that are less than thrilled with the success of this game.

When you see someone with 30+ pages of posting history about being disappointed for instance, writing books and reams of slander – dedicating their waking lives to making derogatory remarks about the game, it’s clear to see there is a different agenda than customer satisfaction being served here

Cheers!

You should never play a game for what it COULD or SHOULD be, because you will always be disappointed: because you are not one of the designers, you will never have the degree of input that you wish you had.

You should buy and play a game for what it is. If you do, you should be more satisfied than not.

Despite the negativity on the forums, this is a great game (IMO obviously) and I believe it will only improve as it matures. While some posters may proclaim their fears for the future of the game, I’ve observed a game studio that has been learning from the mistakes they have made over the past year. The LS is an example of how ANet have been incorporating feedback from the earlier chapters into the development of the more recent chapters as part of an iterative process.

Well, part of the problem is you’re not reasoning; you’re venting. You’ve established that “this guy MUST be wrong”, and nothing said to the contrary has any chance of changing for mind or at least shrugging it off with “eh, different strokes I guess.”

Now to be fair, the same thing happens with the “fanboys” who take any negative criticism as a direct attack rather than accepting, “What I like isn’t universally true.”

Played daoc on excalibur for years and overall I just enjoy GW2 more. :-)

Id like to say GW2, but it just isnt there yet. Whatever feelings one may have about the game or design direction, theres no getting around the fact that the developer has played word games, went back on their core design principles, walked a grey line between this and that, etc. Whether you approve of changes or not, the design decisions are met with such controversy. I am comfortable saying this because in any game that I have played, for the most part people were pleased with changes. Im not talking about some nerf to your class, but large game design additions or subtractions. I played WoW for 6 years and I never saw this much controversy. GW2 would probably be on that list if every decision arenanet made wasn’t surrounded by controversy.

I don’t think GW2 never had, and never will have the right to be in that list, because despite some theoretically good ideas (like the removal of trinity and traditional quests), wich have been bad or at least poorly implemented, the rest is just nothing that hasn’t seen in a better version elsewere.
Plus, the game came out way to prematurely, with a visible lack of content, optimization and polishing.
If it wasn’t named after the original Guild Wars and without the massive (and decieving) hype campaign, GW2 now would be just another grindy F2P nobody cares about…

I like your post OP and I agree with you.

Though the negative side will always “win” on forums… Even if you post a possitive post like this one negative posters will fill it with negativity over how wrong you are and most of the players who agree’s with you don’t even look at these whiny forums for all different reasons.

Though there are already a few good comments in here and I like that but atleast one who has to go calling you Fanboy in hopes that you will be convinced that you are not and will start to not like the features in GW2. Everyone who says that GW2 is the best game yet is a Fanboy, is that wrong?
I am a fan of this game since this is in my opinion the best game and I will tell people how good this game is and that most updates has been awesome does not mean that others have to think the same. Just as everyone spreads their negativity we fanboys has all the right to say what we like about the game without getting to hear the word fanboy as some kind of a curse.

Yeah it’s easy to just hurl the fanboy sticker at someone who likes the game, like it validates all kinds of complaints that in my eyes are often faulty in logic and presented in such a childish and spiteful manner that it loses all creditibility.

But obviously a lot of people enjoy this game. I’ve listened to the last two episodes of the Chronicles of Tyria and they seem to enjoy it. Perhaps the issue is that when people spend so much time on a game they start to overlook the reasons they play in the first place and just notice the few hickups they encounter.

GW2 was hyped a lot, but from playing the beta I knew it would deliver exactly what I’d expect from all their hype. I was blown away in beta, at release and to this day my better half and I sometimes just pause and spend a few minutes agreeing how awesome the game is. They main reason we think it’s awesome, is that we have fun playing it. It’s not all kinds of different technical details that fills our minds although they work behind the scene to make it fun. We just enjoy it and as a casual player I don’t see a grind in this game at all. There is no level grind. It’s so easy to get to 80 and with the 350+ levels I have in total I know it doesn’t feel like a grind in any way. The gear is fairly easy to get – exotics are not hard even for us. Yes ascended will take us a while, but we already have a few pieces. But in any other MMO we wouldn’t even have considered trying. That just speaks volumes of how much this game hits the sweet spot for us.

Sorry pal, stopped taking you seriously here… When you compared Guild Wars 2 with a milestone in MMO history…
You clearly never played DAOC… I mean, would really compare wuvwuv Player vs Door to Realm vs Realm?

Actually I would. because ANET hired the devs from Realm vs Realm to craft WvW. That was stated back during development, is was also stated they was modeling it after RvR. Now they made it so the more casual player could play it, so it is dumbed down a little, but it is modeled after it and if you can’t see that then you must not have played DAoC.

So, the fact the they may or may not hired some devs from Mythic to work on wuvwuv, means that you can compare the zergfest PvDoor at the most epic kind of PVP ever made?
I mean, do you at least remember the tactics and strategies and alliances from guilds required to get and hold the relics?
And what about the size and variety of the maps? Just in case you didn’t noticed, GW2 offers THE SAME EXACT map for all 3 borderlands…

I didn’t say it was the same, I said it was modeled after it. Which it is. If you can’t see that then your blind.

The place where ANET messed it up was making it so casual friendly, which in turn created the zergvsdoor. Which I totally agree with you on that part. But the idea, the using siege, controlling the towers and keeps, and the general setup is still a lot like RvR just dumbed down.

Well, you’re right on that, but my point is that they had the perfect example on how a wide range, massive scale pvp would’ve been handled… Heck, they could’ve just rip it off from DAoC (a game release 11 years before GW2… And still, with far more deepness and feature than ANet game), and it would’ve been way better than what we have…
WvW is not just a dumbed down version of Realm vs Realm… Is a joke that’s not even almost funny, compared with the original.

Yes, the game is awesome, not perfect (what game is?) but awesome. Yes, the forums have an overabundance of exaggerated rants that aren’t even close to constructive. In fact, I wish the mods would crack down much harder on such posts. But what purpose does this thread serve? It’s not constructive either, just flamebait. Thank You’s for the well-meaning sentiments expressed by Gallows and ShinjoNaomi.

I also applaud the Collaborative Development Initiative by Chris Whiteside and company.
In face-to-face focus group sessions, I believe participants are wont to be less adversarial. Not the same when one invites the feedback and opinions from a large group of anonymous individuals.
Thus far, the team has been handling this with great diplomacy and aplomb. If they pull this off, they will have attained a valuable set of ideas and initiatives to build and sustain a comparative advantage over the competition.

There is no flame bait in this thread and I find the term nothing more than a sad excuse for being rude.

I honestly just find many complaints here are just over the top and not very constructive.

I like the game and so does a lot of people. Compared to other MMOs it’s like the GW2 forums are much more tilted towards the negative. Perhaps it’s the free nature of the game, because people keep playing since there is no subscription and stick around to complain. I don’t know.

When I log in I see a great fun game, where hours can easily pass and the fact that it’s the first MMO since daoc that I stick with and keep playing for more than 2-3 months tells me that the game is at least awesome for me.

If you’ve played it for a very long time and don’t intend to stop playing it… you must think it’s good or something is just very wrong. I play games I like and find fun.

I don’t think anyone ever really said GW2 is a terrible game, the point that alot of people keep making is that there is alot of squandered potential here with this game. The game has the ability to accommodate many different play styles and have much much more depth to the world then what is currently available. Alot of the original team that designed the game isnt around anymore from my understanding, and as i have said in the past, the new team doesnt show the creativity that the original game developers showed.

It’s got a LOT of good going for it; more good than bad, probably.

However, there are some core design flaws that are becoming more and more obvious. They’re not unfixable by any means… I’m thinking of the massive class imbalance in both PVP and PVE, the lack of scaling on any stat besides Might and Precision, and the profound lack of build diversity among the weaker classes.

These are things Anet want to improve, I’m sure. We want them improved too! It’s just that we play the game for hours every day and it feels like it’s taking forever sometimes. The new healing skills, for instance, could have been great. A couple of them are (Engi, Mesmer). A lot of them suck badly (Elementalist, Thief, Necro). So what is this? It’s a numbers adjustment. But how long will it take them to admit what’s been done and fix it? Probably a month at least. That doesn’t feel good from our end.

But yeah, I definitely agree: If you’re not having fun, stop playing for your own sake. I mean hey, there’s no sub fee, so just come back in a month or two.

I agree with you in everything you said except the part about “anyone ever really said GW2 is a terrible game”. There are plenty of threads out there that vehemently state that this game is terrible and has betrayed the GW1 fanbase, etc., etc., etc.

I do, however, love the game and agree with the OP. I think any game has room to improve and grow. I’m not sure if the new team is any less creative than the old, but I feel they have abandoned much of the lore that made GW1 so attractive.

I’m not bashing because I love playing the game and am very happy with it. I just wish I could see some more of the old GW1 in GW2.

Well, I’m sure ANet will be more than happy to subsist with just your semi-casual gem purchases.

Others think that a company of ANet size, able to develop the GW2 we knew before release, can do way much better. The game just feels like an orange juice machine with no more oranges. Squeezing and squeezing those last drops.

Until real improvement is seen, people who loved the game at release but are unhappy with the current direction (and not a single particular change but the whole direction for the last year) will keep complaining at the forums.

What’s the reason for the snarky comment about the gems? If you don’t like what’s happening in the game, don’t take it out on the people who do. Comments like that certainly don’t lend you any credibility or serious consideration with ANet people who read these comments. Moderators and Devs on these forums have frequently mentioned that they do not bother to read or take seriously people who are mean to them or other posters.
