Could just be a change they made to DR and not the world at large. The Canthans/Elonians/Ascalonians division was dividing players along racial lines which NCsoft might not have liked. Class division is more universal in the sense that all races have rich and poor. Remember that they were aiming for a bigger audience than GW1 players also and a class division is more immediately comprehensible to players new to the lore. But this doesn’t mean Cantha and Elona have been deleted from the world, just from Divinity’s Reach.

IF this is true, which there is no evidence of it… it could also have been for 2 others reasons. A) NCSoft wanted to shed the image of this being a primarily Asian MMO for Western audiences, so they figured dropping Cantha would help that OR They weren’t overly thrilled with how Cantha was portrayed in GW1 and didn’t want a repeat of it. I mean, at the end of the day, the Factions story was good but I can’t think of too many players off the top of my head who ever said “Cantha is my favorite place to go!”.

But why on earth would NCSoft, a Korean company, want to get rid of Asian elements?

Kind of… doesn’t make sense in my head. Maybe from an investor point of few, but it’s not like Asian themes turn many people off. (inb4 korean grind/anime joke)

I’ll be honest, I’ve played a lot of “asian themed” MMO’s – and by nature they are all kitteny grind fests. Dream of Mirror Online, Silk Road Online, Rapplez, god – so many of them. “Let’s all wear traditional korean and chinese raiments all the time listening to stereotypical asian music and everything looks like the inside of an asian pawn shop!”. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I’m not saying I’m not for Cantha, as I’d love to explore the totality of Tyria at some point. But I am saying that I kind of understand why they would want to steer out of that market. It might also have something to do with that one Panda-pokemon game that came out. Don’t release similar things at the same time as other game developers.

I liked how Cantha was portrayed in GW1, it felt fresh when I first played it, it was a real difference in comparison to the original game and in a good way and it made me level several more alts.
You can never have a truely “universal” environment – everything that goes into will in some way relate to the various cultures we know and alot take inspiration from it, I highly doubt there is a decision to absolute stay clear from certain cultures as it does hinder innovation- the game currently does have some asian themes to it, though more fantasied- an example I find the Sylvari faces have a more asian asthetic.

I’d like to see Cantha in some form in this game, I enjoyed the feel the game had, trowing through those sewers, shanty houses, and just the rough nature of the cityscape.

As far as whether this is true or not, it is a very plausible explanation for why they published screens of a Canthan district of the human home town only to end up not having one at all in exchange for a non-nonsensical chasm in the middle of the city.

We didn’t get enough of Cantha in Factions, right? God, I hated that city…

My thoughts exactly. I personally don’t mind if we never go back there. Outside of the city was ok though.

We didn’t get enough of Cantha in Factions, right? God, I hated that city…

Cantha isn’t a city, of course. Kaineng City is the large city. There’s no reason to think that Kaineng City would need to be much more than a hub, similar to Lion’s Arch in a Canthan expansion.

That a little bit understated. Kaineng City was a pretty significant portion of that continent/island. I don’t think they would/could shrink it down to LA-ish size. Its also were a big portion of the story took place, which I think is what most of us (at least me anyways) didn’t like about it, since it forced us into the maze-like areas.

Ripping off reality in no way makes a game compelling. As far as I’m concerned, humans should never have been a part of Guild Wars or indeed any work of fiction set in another universe.

You have no idea what you are talking about, by the way. Guild Wars 1 was pretty much all about humans, there were almost no other civilized races to speak of(dwarves and tengu come to mind) until the GW2 prequel came out…er…I mean Eye of the North. By your definition, every single work of art(game) in existence that references humanity is crap. Narrow-minded much?

I think at some point in time they will bring Cantha into the GW2 universe. They have established the lore to support going there once the sea route is opened up. I also think the first couple expansion will involve finishing opening up the continent we are on and crossing the crystal desert into Eloina. This makes the most sense, especially since the deep sea dragon just popped up in recent history. Just my opinion.

I sincerely hope that Cantha does make it into the game. Not having it would be a ridiculous business decisisn to prevent the devs realising what would be a glorious setting

It is ofc only speculation, but after reading the comment at the end of this wiki article it also doesn’t surprise me

I think in the long run they’d be doing themselves a disservice by leaving Cantha out of GW2…I doubt it has anything to do with NCsoft being unhappy with how the asian culture was “portrayed” in GW1, because if that were the case they wouldn’t of allowed factions to be released the way it was.

In the end ArenaNet is creating a living, vibrant world…or so they say…And if that’s the case how do they intend to do that when they leave out one of the most complex and deep cultures in the series, one that so many people have a strong interest in?

This game has the potential to be genuinely universal in appeal, but there’s so little about Cantha in the game that anyone who never played GW1, or paid attention to any of the lore would probably have almost no clue that it exists…The fact they literally built the Canthan district in Divinity’s Reach prior to release, and then decided to toss it down an endless abyss randomly is the main thing that brings believability to the whole thing and is a pretty good way to alienate the potential Asian/Eastern playerbase they could gain with the game.

As for why I love Cantha and why I want it in the game….I may or may not be in a minority when I say this but I enjoyed the Canthan portion of GW1 the most because it was so vibrant, and rich when it came to the storylines and the culture compared to some of the others while maintaining a darker/grittier atmosphere in many portions of it’s content. I enjoyed my ritualist a lot, and I made one of my favorite characters in GW2 based off Cantha, even making her the namesake of my original GW1 toon) at launch I was assuming we would have more Canthan content in the game eventually, and I really want to go back there with her and see what has happened with the region of her ancestors If we don’t get that opportunity then I will feel seriously let down, to be honest…

We were having this discussion in my guild a few days ago and there were many people who really hope Cantha is on it’s way.

Me too, actually! It seems to come up more and more in-game ever since the living story thing went live with the refugees and people were hoping it had something to do with Cantha (top knot guy with his dolyak in the art), and then Anet said NOPE!

Cantha will be a huge undertaking, so it would most likely be released in an expansion…I’m just kind of hoping it’s the 1st expansion even though I kind of doubt it since it isn’t even on the map unless you visit the globe at the Order of Whispers HQ.

Cantha was one of the most unique regions I’ve ever explored in a video game and even though Kaineng city was pretty ugly from a aesthetic point of view (cardboard city!) it was still quite a delight to get lost in. Echovald Forest and The Jade Sea were absolutely marvelous from a design point of view and I would cry many tears (not really, but I’d be pretty bummed) if we never got to re-explore that beautiful continent.

And maybe it’s because I played them first before Prophecies, but I more readily associate Cantha (Factions) and Elona (Nightfall) with Guild Wars than Tyria so it’d be a shame never to see them again.

GW1 was mostly populated with NA and EU players, but GW2 is a completely different story. Anet(and NCSoft) has big plans for GW2, including releasing it in both Chinese and Korean language(the official Chinese site have been up for months). With the Canthan district in the BWE’s, Anet’s Chinese overlords and Korean Dictators aren’t happy about that, so it was completely destroyed and said to be massive landslide due to poor construction(as all Chinese buildings are). Since Chinese and Koreans will never likely to become friends and agree on letting Anet having buildings with both of their architectural styles, there would probably never be a Canthan related map in GW2.

Yep this confirms the rumors…That really sucks to be honest…I hope they move forward with Cantha anyway, it sucks to make all the players miss out on something like that because of that sort of crap…Even if certain people over there get annoyed over it they should put it in anyway, if they have to choose to go more uniform with Chinese, or Japanese, or whatever styles keeping it consistent as to avoid offending people than fine, I guess that’s a concession that may have to be made unfortunately, but to leave Cantha out all together is just tragic.

At this moment I’m much more interested in ArenaNet coming forward and being honest with us about the whole Cantha thing and telling us in some varying degree what’s up and if we can ever count on seeing Cantha again, or not. I’ve found it really interesting that discussion on Cantha has increased over the last few weeks in particular amongst the player-base, both in and out of the game. A bunch of people in my guild want it the most out of any of the other regions, myself included. But it would be nice to know if we can count on seeing Cantha again anytime in the relatively foreseeable future or not…And if not, why?

As I have said before, a big part of what brought me to the GW franchise was the Factions expansion in the 1st game, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t confident that I’d be able to see it again in the second game being that it was such a gigantic part of the first game and such a huge part of the lore of the series in general…Having it removed due to politics majorly disappoints me, and frustrates me and I hope Anet will have the guts to move forward with it regardless of if they have complete support of the “bureaucracy” about it and that a middle ground can be met.

Frankly, I don’t really care. Cantha was the ugliest and most awfully designed region in GW1. Bunch of tight corridors with claustrophobic level design in almost every area of the campaign (save for the Jade Sea, which is my favorite part because I feel like they actually opened the place up a bit there). Tyria felt open, Elona felt open, EotN felt open….Cantha was a series of corridors and tubes guiding you to specific destinations. It was truly awful and I’d like nothing more than to never re-experience it again, in this game or any other.

Maybe all of Cantha will be one HUGE multi stage dungeon(like Slaver’s Exile in EotN and Domain of Anguish in Nightfall). :p

The Great Collapse

This area was originally a completed Canthan district and included a blend of Asian architectures. However, this mix of styles received negative negative feedback from China and Korea, since those gaming markets traditionally prefer a uniform design. Due to time constraints the district was replaced by the Great Collapse.

Cantha was my favorite GW1 region to work on. And I worked on every GW release. I know a lot of the dev team loved it and would love to revisit it. I kinda agree with critickitten about the negative aspect of tight corridors. Most of that came from hitting technological limits while trying to keep the epic quality of the concept art. I think we could do some really amazing things with those themes in our new engine. Certainly nothing is ruled out. I certainly encourage anyone to express your desire for a Cantha region in GW2 in a positive and friendly way. It could be years away, but it’s worth asking for.

is GW2 actually popular/successful in Korea? or will it be in China?
personally, i never played GW1 (only learned about its lore from WoodenPotatoes because i was interested in GW2 years before it launched), so i wouldn’t necessarily prefer Cantha over another region, possibly even an entirely new one.

i guess most of us westerners might not take this situation of “chinese didn’t like their architechture mixed with korean and vice-versa” seriously, but you have to respect different cultures.
imo, norn with black skin don’t make sense, lore-wise. and i believe the main reason they’re in game is so no american can play the racist card. looking at it from a different culture (i’m not american), that seems like a very petty thing to me, personally.

so over all, you just have to accept other cultures and what might seem silly from your own point of view. in this case especially because NCSoft (who are Korean) is the publisher, the one who funded this game.

i just hope GW2 will be a success and Korea and China, so that we didn’t/won’t lose Cantha for no reason at all. because if it’s gonna fail over there, it’s just one big waste.

I’d love to see what you guys could do with that sprawling tinderbox of a city now that you’ve got an extra axis to play with. But we are given the chance to revisit Cantha, please don’t un-jade the Jade Sea.

I dug the uniqueness of the sprawling Kaineng City, the petrified Echovald Forest, and especially the jade Jade Sea. The rest of it, the stereotypical Asian setting in a fantasy world, I don’t care what you do with. But leave those three specific things as close to their original incarnations as you can.

Thanks for contributing to the topic, maybe it will help put some attention on Cantha. I have seen a few newer players ask about it in the game, and when they’re told it’s not in the game and might never be they frowny face us, and as I’ve mentioned before, it’s come up in conversation in my guild before with most people really wanting it as well from what I can tell, so there definitely is a lot of interest in seeing Cantha brought to the game ASAP.

There has to be a way to reach middle ground or something on bringing that region to GW2, unfortunately though it sounds like some major concessions would have to be made on the developers/artists behalf in sticking to a “uniform” theme with Cantha, as in keeping it strictly Chinese, Korean, or Japanese and not mixing them like in GW1, and if that really is a huge reason as to why we don’t have more Canthan in the game then that’s just depressing because each culture has so much to offer. If I’m wrong in this conclusion then by all means correct me because I would love for this not to be the case, as it sounds like the worst (possible) case scenario.

Even if the game wasn’t going to go to the eastern/asian territories, it would be worth building Cantha into the game for the rest of us. Many westerners are fascinated by asian/oriental mythologies and history. Most of my favorite memories of GW1 were in Cantha, my toons in this game were made under my own belief I’d be able to go there again in GW2 and they are the namesakes of my GW1 characters who were Canthan, so to not be able to go there in this game would most likely be the biggest let down I have felt with a game in a very long time. I’m not saying I’d rage quit or anything but I would very literally be extremely disappointed and that disappointment would linger for a long time and probably carry into any potential GW3…:P

Man, am I the only one who groans audibly whenever Asian-themed places are introduced to otherwise Western-ish fantasy games in expansions? It always feels tacked on and out of place (and admittedly I find zero appeal in the aesthetic. I enjoyed Nightfall, but Factions… couldn’t get into it.)

The tengu I’m cool with, they don’t stick out like a sore thumb (yet). But I hope throwing Cantha back into the mix is, at the least, a very, very far-off goal.

The game already has many asian-themed aesthetics built into it everywhere mixed with western styles, and was built from the ground up to have a more universal appeal than the first game so it really isn’t an “otherwise westernish fantasy game”… So Cantha wouldn’t be out of place at all. And then there’s Earth, where you could try and apply that logic, too..variety in aesthetics is a very very good thing :P

Kaineng City(and the Undercity) was pretty much my favorite part of the GW world when it came to map design. It was a maze you could genuinely get lost in, even if you tried not to. Now with the tech of GW2, the ability to jump, and 250 years of creative freedom, I hope that the cramped corridors full of 90° turns will have survived in some form for us to explore.

I’d like to imagine the Canthans having built their megacity further into the sky, burying old Kaineng below, just like they did before with the Undercity. With an imperial column of skyscrapers looming above, the city would rely on airships and skyways for transport instead of regular ships, using tall buildings as ports for them to load and unload cargo or passengers. I would like to have to watch my steps constantly(at least as long as I’m not familiar with the area) to not fall into the abbyss of old Kaineng.
I know this is pretty much a pipe dream, but I would like to be able to traverse the whole length of the tunnel the Dredge have supposedly been digging to Cantha. I imagine the exit to be somewhere in old Kaineng, or even the Undercity/sewers, which players had to work their way out of to get to the surface.
Regardless, I hope they will bring the destroyed Asura gate outside Kaineng back online for us to travel through, or even have it moved to the Imperial “towers”.

As much as I loved Cantha, I would reall rather see wholly new continents that have their own place in the lore. I would much rather find out about The Isle of janthir. Nightfall is another place I wouldn’t want to go back to. I think wholly new places for this game would be much more fun. We’ve seen those before and we already have Tyria in both games. It’s time to bring on wholly new adventures!

That’s actually a really amazing idea and I want Cantha even more now!! darn it!!

Say that Cantha was reintroduced in an expansion, and one or two new races/professions were introduced, what might they be. I don’t remember of any particularly stand-out races in Cantha aside from the Tengu, and they already have an area cordoned off for use as a main city on mainland tyria so i’m not sure how that would work.

That said, I think that several people hit the nail on the head, the three environments that really stood out were Kaineng city, which could be stunningly reimagined and redesigned with the new engine. As well as the Echovald forest and the Jade sea, which practically need no redesign. heck, most of the textures and objects they already have from the jade maw fractal, and some of the monsters from both are present in GW2. I’m also thinking of how incredible it could be to do jumping puzzles in Kaineng city, as well as what kind of dungeons and world bosses could be added. Obviously many will want the return of The Deep and Urgoz’s Warren, but really the possibilities are endless.

I enjoyed Cantha the most from GW1. I didn’t finish the Tyria story before making a new character and playing through Cantha. After that, I spent the majority of my time in that part of the world. I really wish there were more connections to that continent in the current game besides the collapsed district in Divinity’s Reach and a few passing mentions from NPCs.

That said, I waited for GW2 for 5 years, my new super long wait is probably going to be GW2 Cantha however far that is out.

Factions was my favorite campaign in GW1. I loved the aesthetic of it, especially of Shing Jea and the Jade Sea. The small shrine in the mountains near the monastery was awesome, as was the dragon coiled around the rock just off the coast of Panjiang, near the Crimson Skull camp. I loved the concept of the ritualist. I loved the “smoke” from the fires that were actually symbols. I loved the clothes (many of my characters’ final armors ended up being Canthan.) I loved the music and often idled in either my guild hall or in the Jade Sea (or, as is the case right now, in Minister Cho’s Estate) just to listen to it. When I’d take a break from the game, overhearing the music from someone else playing in Cantha was frequently what would bring me back.

I was happy that the dragon blocking access to Cantha—Zhaitan—was the first one we killed. I didn’t expect us to go to Cantha immediately afterwards, especially since we still have some dragons on Tyria left to get rid of, and there’s that whole isolationist thing going on with Cantha. But I’d hoped it meant that we’d see it sometime in the near-ish future.

Cantha was my favorite area by far, and seeing it again was one of the things I looked forward to the most. Saying I was ecstatic to see the Fractal bonus round is an understatement.

Please work something out with NCsoft so we can see Cantha come back, with the Asian themes still intact. T_T

Here’s to hoping that when/if the Canthan district of DR is rebuilt, that it’ll have the appearance it was originally intended to have (or close enough.)

Given what you guys did with Divinity’s Reach and the sense of urban sprawl, Cantha done with the same ideas in mind would be amazing. You could give the sense of overcrowded streets without having them be a navigational nightmare. As a player of both GW1 and GW2, I’m all for a return to Cantha, especially after the build-up left for us in Winds of Change. As a writer, this is also easily my favorite part of the Tyria story. How’s that for positive?

Ripping off reality in no way makes a game compelling. As far as I’m concerned, humans should never have been a part of Guild Wars or indeed any work of fiction set in another universe.

You have no idea what you are talking about, by the way. Guild Wars 1 was pretty much all about humans, there were almost no other civilized races to speak of(dwarves and tengu come to mind) until the GW2 prequel came out…er…I mean Eye of the North. By your definition, every single work of art(game) in existence that references humanity is crap. Narrow-minded much?

it’s called sturgeons law. 90% of everything is crap.

as for the topic, i didnt play much of factions, only seeing the big city place a couple times. it was pretty interesting and i would like to see it implemented into gw2 in some way shape or form.

thugged out since cubscouts

Here’s the thing, when I saw what the GW2 engine was capable of, Kangang City was the first thing I thought of and went “That would be awesome” Fighting over rooftops, dropping down into the streets, fighting through the buildings…

If you start thinking swashbuckler movies you’ll see where I’m coming from.
