I thought the video was cute and funny (although I can’t help but get the feeling it was all staged, despite the initial claims). The whole premise seems pretty corny, but eh, it’s a memorable ad campaign, so it’s worked in that regard.

Good thing I wasn’t in that taxi though. When the girl claimed that they update every two weeks, I’d have said, “That’s not really a good thing though…” XD

That scene may have been recorded several times… It just wouldn’t make it into the edited reel.

Your missing the picture here, were discussing the business aspect of what was done here. You realize Anet spent a tremendous amount of money on a marketing campaign geared towards people who take taxis rides? People are saying it has to be a bad joke because it literally is that bad from a business standpoint. It’s almost an attempt at in house sabotage to ruin the game.

As a person who has been in the field of marketing with computer companies for years, I can say that this is probably one of the worst targeted campaigns I have ever seen in my entire life. If i was an ad agency looking to come up with an innovative way to bring in new users to a video game, I wouldn’t be targeting taxi cabs in the middle of NYC. Is it funny and lighthearted? Yes. But it doesn’t target the correct audience by any means, you could run that campaign for a month and I bet you would maybe get 10-20 people who ride in that cab who even know what guild wars is let alone play video games long enough to actually play an MMO.

In the end all this does is take away money from a budget from a game that is already suffering the effects of poor management.

correct. the keyword is “targeted audience” and “budget” but if they did not spend too much monies on this then i suppose it would still be somewhat acceptable.

the video is entertaining to watch.

i.e. apart from meg turney which they have to pay her since she is not an anet employee, everyone else could be an anet employee. as for the props, decoration of the taxi, errrr i am not sure how much those would cost though.

Not to say you’re not correct but it’s hard to take your post seriously since every post I see by you is defending Anet so the discrediting of another MMO just seems an extension of that. Everyone else appears to praise ESO so it just seems a bit….questionable.

You know, had I seen this ad before already having come to GW2. I probably would not have come to GW2.

That ad is painfully offensive.

It is like satirically dressing the Statue of Liberty up as a woman holding out a piece of chicken, and then giving away free chicken on Liberty Island. Except most business would not be stupid enough to try to do so. (Because its one of those things most people are smart enough not to do.)

If this were in a novel, I could understand it, or if it were some kids art project, that I could understand. But to advertise coming to play a game that claims to have two week updates (most of which are terrible right now.)

This ad is pretty offensive. (Add this to the list of one more reason to stop playing this game.)

Not only that, but you offer people a free chance at a free copy of GW2 if they will publically humiliate themselves, by swearing an OATH to GW2? An OATH whether real or as a joke, is still an oath? Really?

…I don’t know whether GW2 is a troll game anymore, or it has seriously become as insane as Scarlet.

Thanks Scarlet.

I’m no marketing expert, so I not going to wade in with my uninformed opinion of how successful or unsuccessful the “make your pledge in public for a chance to win the game” idea will be. But as a Tyrian who (unfortunately) has to spend some time in the real world working to earn some extra coin I can totally get behind the taxi cab video. As a player it made me laugh, not cringe, and to be honest when I’ve described the game to people in an attempt to get them to come try it out I more often than not fall into the habit of speaking like its a real place.

Maybe that just makes me Scarlet-level crazy, who cares, and if this campaign brings in some new players so much the better. There’s room in Tyria for everyone!

Yeah, it is a bit funny how people keep talking about how awesome all the coming games will be.

EXACTLY the same happened before GW2 was released, and clearly it did not meet your expectations, so why would these new games do it?

This ALWAYS happen with every single new big release, it is hyped up like mad and will be “loads better than all other games!” and in 99% of the cases it just disappoints.

The point is, regardless of whether other MMO’s are “better” than GW2, they will still lose players because of personal preference. For example, I’d like to get into Diablo 3 when the expansion comes out because I like loot-centered RPG’s.

Everyone says they’ll lose players. Some people will go play, some will come back. That’s the nature of the game. It’s MUCH harder to lose players with no sub. Because people do get disillusioned and people do come back. If there was a sub it would be a whole lot harder.

And I’m pretty sure that when the really big guns come out (not Wildstar), Anet will announce an expansion and get some new people as well.

Everyone always predicts gloom, but the way I see it, newer players are likely to be happier with the game than old Guild Wars 1 players who expected Guild Wars 1.5, or people who followed the game closely for five years.

I find it rather interesting that you say that. I’ve been in several of their betas, including the most recent one and it appears to me that the vast majority are saying good things about it. That is including in game and forums. It definitely isn’t my cup of tea, but can see why people like it.

I’d look at the reddit thread. It’s literally being torn apart. And I’m not the only one saying this. But believe what you like.

Just remember, people said the same stuff about GW 2 before release and a year later look what they’re saying. People said the same thing about SWToR and look what they’re saying.

We’ll see what we’ll see, but most of the games when they finally come out will have to compete with a two year old MMO and most of them will be buggy, not have enough content and will be desperate for market share, which will make for some interesting errors along the way as well.

I don’t get your point. ESO is indeed also getting a lot of negative feedback. The other new MMO’s not so much but maybe that means ESO is also doing some things not good and they should listen to the negative feedback.

I did play some alpha and I was fun but a very traditional mmo + sub-fee. That plus the fact that people know it will not have the singplayer feeling is the reason for many of the complains. I think if they would go for a B2P model (not the micro-transaction model GW2 is now using but the B2P model as we did see in GW1) many of the complains will stop.

Most likely we will now see ESO being released and then soon having to go F2P. So yes there are also other games that are getting complains but that does not mean the complains are not fair. GW2 has proven those complains should be listened to. Many people have been saying the living story (they way Anet did it) would only scare people away. Anet did not listen and now it looks like many people are leaving. If Anet only had listened.

The ESO reddit page appears to be greatly positive. I don’t even see a single negative post on the entire first page. People are talking about withdrawals and fiending for more. Completely off topic, I just wanted to point out that I don’t agree with the " You think this forum is dark, you should see the stuff being said about ESO."

If you want to see a really healthy forum, check Wildstar, i havent see a single bad comment for that game, and im pretty sure there are some out there but the fact that i havent see any it means that they are not many!

GW2 also did not have many negative feedback before release. I don’t see Wildstar becoming this big thing, it’s just a hyped game like LoTR and Star Trek was. But the question is, do they act on complains. Anet diden’t. when they got complains about the living story patches they said the patched would become bigger in a fact making it worse. The grind issue (that is largely linked to those patches) is not being adressed and in this video they even use it as a positive. If you are really blind for that negative feedback then thats very bad for the game.

I think its you that’s missing the point…

Firstly this will have been cheap to do, in terms of advertising…very, very cheap…

Secondly there target audience isn’t people in mini cabs, its a wider audience via the internet, ie watching the youtube video…

That’s why they have tried to make it funny and have a ‘sexy’ Tyrian driving the cab…

The ‘competition’ itself is completely, ‘tongue-in cheek’…swear allegiance to only one MMO, yeah right…

No, but there is such a thing as a general consensus, or even a majority one. You make it sound like everything is equal parts pro and con and that’s just not the case. You’re right it’s hard to judge which opinions reflect obscurity and which reflect commonality based just on these forums. But to simply say the validity of most everyone’s point of view is illusionary is silly.

The point is to find some kind of consensual truth in all of this. That’s not an impossible thing.

This group is paying for an MMO allready. They are willing to pay monthly if the game is fun/ good enough. You whont lure them in by saying “you get a lot of stuff for free”.

What they should do instead is make a proper summary of what makes this game so unique and great. Ive havent seen a high quality video with hands on examples of what is so great about this game. Some dynamic events and their stories maybe, zone diversity, diversity of content at end game., a proper discription of GW2 combat etc. etc etc.

I’m an RPer and currently considering migrating AWAY from this game.

Not that there’s anything to migrate to at this point in time. League of Legends with friends, I guess…?

That was painful and cringe worthy. Things like this make me embarrassed. Can you guys do something cool instead that make me proud to play GW2 and something that I can share with friends that don’t play GW2? I want to tell my friends hey check this thing out it is so cool. Instead of things like this that are so cringe inducing?

And do you realize this isn’t 2005 anymore? You realize most MMOs are F2P? Why are you talking about subscriptions? Most MMOs are F2P with less barrier to entry than GW2.

I think they are talking about subs because two big names coming next year (maybe) will be sub based. They want to differentiate themselves from the competition.

That is a good point. So they are asking people to pledge and not jump ship?

No idea. The whole concept they are trying to put across is very strange to me, which is why I created this thread.

Might I point that ANet seems to be putting more emphasis on the idea of Tyria as the most dynamic and as a consistently evolving world of any MMO on the market. The idea of not just “playing” the game, but “being part of the world” is a strong marketing technique. If you take into account the recent PS4 ads on talking directly to the player base and personalizing them as a way to get them engaged in their product (remember, this is a business first), I don’t find the messaging overly bizarre in the current market.

Also, as a follower of the U.S. immigration policy debates, I found the play on “hot topic issues” really smart and intriguing.

Guess you haven’t played any of the other betas. The grass isn’t always greener. You think this forum is dark, you should see the stuff being said about ESO.

Guess neither did you.
From Wildstar beta i can definitely tell you, yes, the grass is greener, way greener.

Like I said, people said this about the GW 2 beta too. Believe me, a couple of months in, when the shine is off, the cracks start to show. If not, it’ll be the first MMO that hasn’t happened to.

Also to add that its a lot of personal opinion.

Apart from the sub fee and the trinity, I love everything about ESO. From the non-targeted combat, the freedom of choice for your character, and the way the world looks, it makes me want to look at my holiday planner for next year and take a few days off work.

And then I look at all of Wildstar’s gameplay videos, and the only impression I get is that its WoW in space, down to the horrid art design. The first question I then ask myself is, what makes this better than WoW? If I wanted to play a WoW-clone, I’d go for the original, with 10 years or however it is now more content, and a company which can buy up small countries financing it, as opposed to play a copy of WoW made by a developer I’ve never heard of.

At this point, WoW follows the GW2 “manifesto” more closely than GW2 itself with WoW’s current and upcoming changes.

I believe it’s when you cut off the man part of a centaur and then sew on a goat, or possibly a dolyak head.

I’m a bit bummed because ‘Have you taken the pledge?" has become a way to mock and insult GW2 fans, Arenanet hasn’t done themselves any favors with this one.

One more reason to not ever discuss the game outside of the forums or the game itself I guess.
